A Note from Jo

Saturday, April 1 sixty Guilford Park women & their friends gathered from 10 a.m.—1 p.m. for worship, workshops and lunch. The women who gathered spanned seven decades, and we broke into groups based on age/life circumstances to talk about our topic: Enough for the Day. The Rev. Lee Hull Moses, pastor at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ and author of More Than Enough: Living Abundantly in a Culture of Excess joined us as we explored the difference between excess and abundance. Lee’s sermon used two familiar stories from the Bible—the Israelite people wandering in the desert and complaining about food, and the feeding of the 5,000—to frame our conversation. In both stories, God provided food to feed hungry people. The Old Testament passage (manna in the wilderness) taught us what enough for the day means. Literally, just enough. If the people gathered an excess of manna, it would be spoiled by the next day. There was no gain to over-gathering; God would indeed provide each day. The New Testament passage (feeding the 5,000) taught us about God’s abundance. Not only were the people fed through a small boy’s generosity, but there were leftovers! “Wait,” you’re saying. “In one story the too much was ‘excess,’ but in the other story the extra was ‘abundance.’ What gives?” Here’s what Lee had to say about excess vs. abundance:

During our breakout groups we looked at where in our lives we had not enough, just enough, excess, and abundance. I encourage you to take a look at these categories in your own life, and see how God might be nudging you to add or change your habits. Blessings, Jo

Excess or Too Much 1. It goes to waste; 2. It’s about isolation; 3. It’s fear-based.

Abundance or Plenty 1. It’s put to good use; 2. It’s about community; 3. It’s trust-based.

Congregational Nurse

Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an “out-of-hospital” setting (such as at home, at work or in a park). It consists of two easy steps: Did you know one of our own members’ heart stopped a while back and she is alive and well today only because her spouse knew how to do CPR?

I will have mannequins to practice on in the hall on the last Sunday of the month, May 28th. Come to church 10 minutes early or stay 10 minutes late and learn a skill that could save a life.

Confirmation Sunday is May 14!

The 2017 confirmation class is coming to the end of its 17 week journey of faith exploration. The four high school students will have completed saint visits, learned about the history of the church, studied the Presbyterian way of the Reformed tradition, served the hungry, professed their own faith, attended a session meeting, helped in worship, completed examination by the pastor and session and much more. Now is a time of celebration for the entire church family. For the confirmands it marks a new beginning. It is when they confirm (say yes to) what was done for them at their baptism. On Sunday, May 14, they will be received into our church family during our worship services. All of you are invited to come and welcome these new members to our church family!

Preston Claire Hawkins attends the 9th grade at Cornerstone High School. Her parents are Jay and Jane Hawkins. She has an older sister, Janie and a younger brother, Noah. She loves to participate in team sports and really excels at softball, her favorite. Her favorite food is

chicken tenders. Preston loves to go on mission trips with her church and youth group is her favorite church activity. Her mentor is Lisa Jones.

Jackson Hanes Kirkpatrick attends Dalton L. McMichael High School in Mayodan as a 9th grade student. His parents are James and Mary Kirkpatrick. His younger brother, Cooper is in 5th grade. Jackson’s aunt and uncle, Melanie and Bo

Rodenbough, also attend GPPC as did many of his cousins. Jackson says his favorite thing to do is ‘play the beautiful game of baseball’. His favorite food is macaroni and cheese. His favorite thing about church is the joy that is shared through the community of Christians. His mentor is John Parker. Zachary James Owen is a 9th grade student at Piedmont Classical high school where he participates on the cheer team. His parents are Kay and Jim Owen and his grandparents are Merle and Clyde Neal. His aunt and uncle, Kimberly and Shawn Murphy are also members of GPPC. He has three sisters; Madison, Emily and Poppy. Two cousins, Michael and Tony are also church members. Zach’s favorite food is pizza. His favorite thing to do is listen to music and his favorite thing about church, “it’s calming to hear the music and hang with friends.” Zach’s mentor is Pat Weiner. Thomas Andrew Shackelford is in 9th grade at Grimsley High School where he enjoys playing trumpet in the school band. His parents are John and Suzi Shackelford and his grand-mother is Becky Holt. Thomas has a younger sister, Ali. His favorite food is pizza and he likes to play video games and write. Thomas’ favorite thing about church is youth group. His mentor is Kenny Thompson.

Fall 2016 saw the beginning of a new music ministry at Guilford Park—a youth bell choir. When talented musicians Ben and Mandy Christman-Therrell joined our church in early 2016, the time seemed right to start a new venture with the youth. Mandy has experience ringing choir chimes, and Ben teaches cello. The Christman-Therrells began leading a youth bell choir in the fall with the choir playing at the 11 am worship service on December 18. The choir played a second time at the 11 am worship service on April 2. The members are Jackson Kirkpatrick, Hannah Moore, Jake Moore, Zachary Owen, and Ali Shackelford. As we end this first season of the youth bell choir, we thank Ben and Mandy for their dedication and expertise as they willing gave of their time for our youth. We plan to resume rehearsals in the Fall and invite all youth to consider joining.

Worship

Christ is Risen! Our new Easter banner is our visual “Alleluia” for a happy Easter Sunday Morning! The cross is always a reminder of the suffering and death of Jesus, as we recall the events of Holy Week. The empty cross reminds us that His death was not the end of the story. The joy of Easter is the good news of the resurrection of our Savior and the promise this brings to us. The beautiful

butterflies and other happy symbols express the abundant joy of Easter. The life cycle of butterflies also reminds us that like the caterpillar that spun the cocoon from which the butterfly emerges, we too will be changed in the mystery of death to dwell forever in God’s presence. Christ is Risen Indeed!

[The Liturgical Arts Ministry works together as a team to enhance our worship spiritually with visual art. We especially thank Maria Boulton and Helen Shaw for creating the design of the banner from ideas expressed by the group. Other members of the ministry include Karen Aycock, Kathy Gaines, Martha Higgins, Judy Koelmel, Harold Shelton, Pat Yelton and Phyllis Setzer, chair. Additional members are always welcome.]

Justice & Peacemaking

Dear Guilford Park Family: It's been an eventful month for our refugees. We are thrilled to announce that Baby Ester was born on Good Friday to the Mutochi family and is doing well. Special thanks to everyone who pitched in for the baby shower. More good news, the family is now self sufficient and will "graduate" from the resettlement program next month. The Dady family is also doing well. Some quick help from our congregation enabled the boys to stay in school when their inoculations were delayed. We also got bicycles for both Nshirimana and Mbuto and they are quite pleased. The boys are having some trouble adjusting to school so anyone who might want to tutor should please let me know. I'd like to also thank Pat Weiner for the bi-weekly shopping shuttle service, John Parker for the moving service, Rebecca Conway for her help with a young refugee woman with no sponsor, and Judy and Gene Campbell for their many trips to the doctors. I wish I had the time, space, and mental capacity to thank everyone who has helped out so far. The response has been terrific and it's easy to see the difference we are making in their lives. Good job everyone!

From Personnel

Adult Sunday School Classes

Coffee & Conversation—Jo’s Office

A class to relax and chat. Each class is self-contained, so

it’s easy to try out any time.

Led by Jo Nygard Owens Grab a cup of coffee in the hall and make your way to Jo’s office. There’s space to talk about what’s on your mind, or Jo will pose a question for discussion. If you just need space to

relax and “be,” this is a great class to check out.

History and Theology of the Old

Testament– Westminster Room If you think you’ve heard it all before, this is a fresh look at the Old Testament.

Led by Craig Nygard— It’s never too late to join in. The class will continue to trace the history of the Jewish people from the return to Jerusalem through the time of Jesus. Even if you haven't been in the class to

date, the history of the last 500 years leading up to the time of Jesus will be useful and (likely) interesting. The class meets at the Sunday School hour in the Westminster Room.

Feasting on the Word—Library

A lectionary-based Bible study. Each class is

self-contained, so it’s easy to try out any time.

Led by Jeff Paschal and Kit Schooley This innovative resource incorporates the Feasting on the Word commentary series to explore one of the lectionary passages in ways suitable for all participants. Each age level provides

comprehensive, accessible biblical background from four perspectives: exegetical, homiletical, pastoral, and theological. This curriculum begins with a solid scriptural and theological base and invites leaders and learners deeper into the rhythm of the church year.

ALL SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

BEGIN AT 10:00 A.M.

What will happen this summer if I need a pastor???? With Jeff’s upcoming sabbatical leave the staff has been planning for his absence to ensure all the pastoral needs of the congregation are met during his absence. GPPC is very

fortunate to have both paid and unpaid staff with many years of experience to take over for Jeff. Associate Pastor Jo Owens and Parish Associates Fred Beck and Kit Schooley will be sharing the preaching duties for the summer. The weekly eNews will announce the schedule and it will be printed in the June, July and August Guideposts. Pastoral care, hospital, rehab and home visits will be covered by Jo, Kit, Fred and our Congregational Nurse, Janet Dawson. Jo will cover Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Janet will be on call for Fridays, and Kit and Fred will cover Tuesdays and Thursdays on a rotating basis. Saturdays will be covered by all as needed. No, you will not need to remember whom to call! We have one phone number which will ring all of their phones. Jo will be acting as head of staff and dealing with all the day to day activities of the church. And of course, Jane Sharpe is at the church Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For your convenience, listed below are cell phone photos, in case you need to see a face to make the connection with our parish associates. We are grateful that these individuals will be working together for the GPPC family over the summer months. The phone number for the pastor on call or congregational nurse is 336-663-2660. Remember, whoever is on call will answer, so if you want Jo, Kit, Fred or Janet specifically, please call them directly.

Bread for the World Offering of Letters 2017

Doing Our Part to End Hunger

For many years Guilford Park has supported Bread for the World in their annual Offering of Letters campaign. As a covenant church with Bread for the World, this is one way we have long participated with other congregations in our community and around the country, advocating for those who hunger.

This year, our Bread letter writing campaign will focus on urging our representatives to protect and invest in domestic and foreign aid programs - specifically programs at home like WIC and SNAP and global programs like USAID (US Agency for International Development) that works in over 100 countries to support economic development and directly serve poor and hungry people (while spending less than 1 percent of the total federal budget). These are programs that in recent years have put the United States and the world on a very promising path toward ending hunger by 2030. As Bread notes, “extreme poverty - living on less than $1.90 a day - has been cut in half over the past 30 years.” Now these programs are threatened by potentially devastating funding cuts. Nearly 800 million people worldwide still suffer from hunger. And 159 million children under the age of 5 are malnourished. So while great progress has been made, our work remains unfinished in an urgent time, and our elected leaders need our continuing encouragement.

We want to engage the members of GPPC in this year’s Offering of Letters with a a variety of opportunities. First, we hope as many as possible will join us on Sunday, May 14th, for our Offering of Letters Sunday. We will provide sample letters and easy instructions for all who would like to write a letter or several letters on this particular Sunday.

If you cannot join us on Sunday, May 14th, look in the weekly eNews in May for sample letter links and more directions. We will make it easy for you to take part - and adding your personal note to your representatives will better ensure that our efforts are impactful.

Finally, in an effort to encourage wide writing and writing across the month of May, we are asking each committee and the Session to carve out a small amount of time - five to ten minutes - during the May meeting time - to do some letter writing. Committee chairs have directions about this invitation, and we

thank committees in advance for considering this opportunity to engage in hands-on advocacy on behalf of hungry people.

Thank you for responding to this call to reflect God’s love by sharing your own voice on behalf of hungry people. Let us use our voices together to live out our commitment as Christians, called to embody God’s reconciling love. Let us encourage our elected representatives to take the necessary steps to end hunger - that indeed, all may be fed.

Dear Church family, Thank you for your overabundance of prayer, visits, flowers, food, and cards. You have made my recovery joyful and blessed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Mary Jones Thanks to Our Guilford Park Family George and I appreciate all the support and prayers from our church family and friends during my recent hip replacement surgery and recovery. We are most grateful for the gifts of delicious healing meals, thoughtful cards and notes, as well as calls and visits. All of these have been so important in my recovery and healing. Our church family is such a wonderful gift and we are indeed grateful to be a part of such a caring family as Guilford Park. With love and thanks, Phyllis Setzer Dear GPPC Friends, Thank you so much for all the prayers, cards, calls, food, emails, etc. that I received during my recent hospital stay. These kindnesses certainly helped me through a very rough time. Also, to the three “J’s”: Jeff, Jo, and Janet. Your visits and pastoral care were so comforting and reassuring to me. I am blessed to be part of such a loving and caring church family. Blessings, Donna Barrier From Presbyterian Mission Agency for a recent gift of $166.67 for continued support of our missionary in Nicaragua, Tracey King-Ortega.
