Dear Friends,

Summer flew by, but I hope you were able to find some time for rest, recreation, and renewal. Beth and I spent part of our summer attending the weddings of our children. Four down, one to go--our final kid will be married at the end of December!

As I write these words, the “Blitz the Budget” campaign is wrapping up, and it was a tremendous success. Thank you for your generosity and your faithfulness to Christ.

Note some of the special things happening at GPPC in September:

As far as education is concerned, starting Wednesday, September 10, Mel Rodenbough will be leading a six-week study on God and the New Atheism. On Monday, September 15, Dr. Bob Herron launches another ten-week study in the Companions in Christ series. Check the bulletin/website for exact times and details.

The Fellowship Committee has instituted a change regarding the dinner/fellowship time that was previously called “Wednesdays Together.” This event will now only be offered once a month on the first Wednesday of the month and named “First Wednesdays.” Our first one will be held Wednesday, September 3 at 6:00 p.m.

New member classes will be offered for prospective members on Sundays, September 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 10:00 a.m. If you’ve been considering membership, please join us for those classes. If you know somebody who might be looking for

Pig Pickin’ will be held Saturday, September 13. See inside for more information.

On September 14, we will observe Laity Sunday at both services with Linda Fitts as our guest preacher. There will be

a Committee Fair at the back of the sanctuary, as well as music provided by all our musical groups, in order to show the opportunities for service here and to invite (entice?) more people to be involved and to live out their calling

as Christians.

Our signature mission program, Guilford Park Guys (basketball, meals, mentoring, tutoring, and faith), will hold its

induction ceremony on September 18.

Dr. Charles Campbell, preaching professor at Duke University Divinity School,

will lead a preaching workshop here on Saturday, September 20.

The fall food drive will be held September 26-27 at Harris Teeter.

Mission Sunday will be celebrated on September 28 with the Rev. Mike Aiken

(Director of Greensboro Urban Ministry) as our guest speaker. As you may

recall, Mike will be retiring pretty soon. So this is a fantastic chance to hear him speak about Christ’s call for us to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25).

We will also have a blessing of the cars for the Wheels4Hope program that pro-vides used vehicles for needy people.

It’s good to have summer with its slightly slower pace. But thank God also for

the fall and getting back into the swing of things as we follow Christ, walking

the walk in worship, service, study, and fellowship.

CHOLESTEROL AWARENESS

Too much cholesterol in the blood is one of the main risk factors for heart disease and stroke—two leading causes of death in the United States. One way to prevent these diseases is to detect high cholesterol and treat it when it is found.

What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that your body needs. But when you have too much in your blood, it can build up on the walls of your arteries and form blockages. This can lead to heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

There are two kinds of cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL is also called “good” cholesterol. LDL is called “bad” cholesterol. When we talk about high cholesterol, we are talking about “bad” LDL cholesterol. Seventy-one million American adults have high cholesterol, but only one-third of them have the condition under control. September is National Cholesterol Education Month—a good time to resolve to get your cholesterol screened.

BALANCE CLASS

There will be a six week long balance exercise class starting on Tuesday, September 9 at 12:30 p.m. for one hour in the Westmin-ster room. This is for anyone who would like to improve their balance. Bring a friend or neighbor, if you need to miss a class or so that is fine....just come when you can. Look for a sign-up sheet on the health board.

Join the congregation on the first Wednesday of each month for our revamped First Wednesday din-ner. The Fellowship Committee strives to bring the best experience to the members of Guilford Park with new menus, pricing, and free meals for chil-dren 5 and under (with a reservation). Adult meals are $7.50 and ½ portions are $3.50. With only one dinner a month offered, we hope you will join us for good food, good friends, and good fellowship.

FAMILY FELLOWSHIP SUNDAY

All families are invited to the Fellowship Hall between worship services on Sunday, August 31 for a time of fellowship and fun! There will be snacks and activities, and it's a chance for everyone to catch up as the new school year begins.

FIRST WEDNESDAY DINNER (Church Fellowship, Meals, and Programs) is Wednesday, September 3 at 6:00 p.m. Menu: salad, rolls, grilled chicken, grilled seasonal vegetables, and brownies and ice cream for dessert. DONATION GARDEN UPDATE

Our garden has continued to produce summer squash and tomatoes though our yield of tomatoes has been less than last year due to the plundering and destruction of the squirrels and crows. The butternut squash promises a bountiful crop, almost ready for harvesting and delivering. Because Peter Rabbit and his numerous friends have chosen our church property as their habitat, we will make efforts to protect the fall greens from their feasting. Levina Kollar

FLOWERS FOR THE LORD’S TABLE

Due to the rising cost in flowers and gas prices, our florist must increase her prices for our worship flow-ers. The new cost is $50 and went into effect on Sunday, August 17. If you have already paid for your flowers please send a check to the church for $13.36 to cover the difference. If you have not paid for your flowers and you feel this price is too high and you want to take your name off the list, please contact Lisa Boxley in the church office to let her know.

IT’S COMING!

The Congregational Care Committee is completing a SMART Goal as we begin offering bus service to Friends Homes at Guilford and Friends Homes West in September. The new year for Presbyterian Women at Guilford Park is about to get underway and we are looking forward to a great year of fellow-ship, service and study.

Our Fall Gathering is Sunday, Sept. 28 at 12:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will have a delicious meal catered by Chef Reto Biaggi. We will also collect the Thank Offering which is received from Presbyterian Women church–wide in the PCUSA . The money goes toward funding projects which are selected from the Creative Minis-tries Committee of the PW. These projects must have a purpose that meet basic human needs, provides a form of aid that relates directly to the people being served and must be a new project or a new direction of an existing program. We will learn about last year’s recipients and offer our gifts for the 2014 recipients.

All women at GPPC are invited to attend the lunch-eon. If you are not a member of a circle, we would like to encourage you to join one. Please contact Sarah Arnett if you have any questions about the circles at Guilford Park. The circles will start meeting again in September and many of them will be study-ing Paul and 2nd Corinthians.

LAITY SUNDAY AND COMMITTEE FAIR:

September 14. Join us for Laity Sunday where we cel-ebrate the priesthood of all believers with lay people (i.e., non-ministers) leading the service. Our preacher for both services will be Linda Fitts. Both choirs and the handbell choir will provide music at both services giv-ing all GPPC members a chance to see the musical op-portunities that are available for you to join this fall.

WESTMINSTER CLASS

Walking and Working in the Kingdom of God: With Guidance from Jesus and Amos

This class will see how the teachings of Jesus and Amos can shape our values and actions as people of the Christian faith. We live in very challenging times just as they did. What does it mean for us that Jesus announced that the Kingdom had come and that we should live into it? What does it mean to live with hope in a world that is cynical and con-temptuous? Some of the topics to be addressed will be:

There are many understandings of Jesus. Which Jesus do we follow?

What does justice mean? What are the personal and societal factors that

restrict the coming of the kingdom of God? What role should the church have in the kingdom? How are we called to live in hope?

LIBRARY CLASS

Mudhouse Sabbath by Lauren Winner Winner draws on the Orthodox Jewish rituals that shaped her young adult life to rediscover the rich-ness of those customs in her life as a Christian to-day. Through her personal reflections on 11 spiritu-al practices, including keeping the Sabbath, prayer, fasting and candle-lighting, Winner illuminates the profound cultural and religious significance of each practice within the Jewish community and modifies those practices to enrich the lives of Christians who seek of deeper experience of their own faith.

PRESCHOOL UPDATE

There will be the laughter of children and the patter of little feet down the hall again as Guilford Park Preschool gears up for our opening day of school on Tuesday, Sep-tember 2. All the preschool staff would like to thank you for allowing us to be a part of this important ministry to families. We are excited about some of the enriching activi-ties our Silent Auction will allow us to provide. The play-ground will continue to evolve into a space that excites children with nature. This will allow them to experience God’s creations and feel a connection to something greater than them. We will also have weekly Spanish language, songs and games as part of our weekday program. SESSION HIGHLIGHTS from the August 17, 2014 Stated Meeting:

Correspondence was received from the current Chair of the Presbyterian Counseling Center, providing an update re-garding the center’s new staff members and future plans. Guilford Park has been an active supporter of the Counseling Center since its inception and many church members have served on the center’s board. If you would be interested in serving a term on the board of this valuable community resource, or know of another church member who may be in-terested, please contact Jeff Paschal regarding an upcoming vacancy on the center’s board.

All Session members have committed to participate in the “Blitz the Budget” campaign by increasing their 2014 pledge.

As of August 17, increased pledges during the “blitz” totaled more than $48,000.

Under the leadership of the Congregational Care Committee, the church will begin a bus ministry that will transport

interested residents of Friends Home and Friends Home West to Sunday worship and First Wednesday dinners. This

bus ministry will begin with the church dinner on Wednesday, September 3 and worship on Sunday, September 7. The

ministry will continue for at least a 3-month period, at which time it will be assessed.
