Dear Friends, The Tend the Temple program of honoring God with our bodies is in full swing with all sorts of activities happening. Thank you to all of you who are leading and participating. Check out the Tend the Temple bul-letin board for more options. One of our new mission opportunities is a ministry with some of our Muslim brothers and sisters here in Greensboro. We are just getting started, but we’ve already had a small group planning luncheon (complete with delicious Middle Eastern food), and some of our new friends have helped to contribute to one of our food drives for the hungry. The Mission Committee is hoping we will share some ministries, as well as build understanding and friendships. Exciting times! You’ll be hearing more, as the months go by. Please contact me if you have any questions. A few dates to note. Sunday, May 3 Wills Emphasis Sunday. A Note from Jo

Listen to your body.

This is a phrase that has been drummed into my head since I was in elementary school. I’ve learned to listen for structural problems, for nervous system problems, for stress issues, and now for auto-immune issues. All this listening can really wear a girl out!

The flip side is not listening. Ignoring the signals of fatigue, stress, and pain for too long causes my body to begin yelling at me until I practice better self-care.

But there’s more to tuning in to your body than just pain and stress. A newer area of focus for me is the food I eat. Most of you know that I stay away from gluten and dairy (at least most of the time...), and for a while I had to avoid potatoes like the plague! As my doctors have fine tuned my medications, I always feel the need to test the boundaries of what I can eat. How about a donut? Or a sandwich? Perhaps a small bite of Amelia’s leftover grilled cheese?

I have met with varying success. I’ve learned that I can eat French fries every so often, and that one donut does not cause me pain. But do I stop at one donut? Um, sadly, no. Two? Nope, try three! Or four. And then, if I eat three donuts, I find myself craving all sorts of other gluteny and sugary things, and I lose my ability to tell if I’m full.

I call this my sugar trigger. If I eat something with too much sugar, my system goes out of whack and I can no

longer regulate normal eating. I have crazy, constant cravings, and I don’t feel like exercising or moving much.

If I manage to control myself, the sugar leaves my system after a day or so, and I’m back to my regular self. But I wonder, does this happen to anyone else, or am I alone in sugar-trigger-world? What is your body trying to tell you about patterns of eating if

you’ll only listen?

This journey of Tend the Temple is something we’re all in together, and it doesn’t stop after December 31. I hope you’ll continue to think about your body as holy, a place where God resides. And just as most of us dress up on the outside to come to worship, dress up your insides for God, too.

Listen to your body to find out what makes you feel good, feel lighter, feel like there’s space for God to dwell. Take out those things that make you heavy and crowd out room for the Holy Spirit to move.

As always, I’m here to commiserate on your journey!

Blessings,

Jo

MAY BIRTHDAYS

Church Family Thank You’s

Dear Friends, We appreciate your remembering us at Easter. The card itself was very lovely with artwork of colorful orchids and the quotation of Matthew 28:20, en-couraged us greatly. The package of lovely note-cards was a “just right” gift. Your thoughtfulness adds to our feeling of always knowing that GPPC is there for us. Special thanks. With love, Thearon and Albertine Hooks Dear Guilford Park Friends, I want to thank you so very much for remembering me while I was in Camden Rehab. Your prayers, cards, flowers, visits and calls meant so much to me during that time. You helped me to withstand the recovery by remembering me. Thank you again. Love and God bless, Gerry Waterhouse

The Liturgical Arts Ministry has extended the collection time for green fabric until the end of May. Members of the congregation are requested to bring their addition of green fabric for use on a new banner which is planned. The fabric doesn't have to be new -- just green. It can be a 6" square from a favorite old green garment. The goal here is to have church-wide participation. Contributions can be put in the basket marked "Green Fabric" in the front hall.

Please join us on Sundays at 10:00 for one of these excellent classes....... LIBRARY CLASS Stewardship of Creation: Psalm 24 tells us that "the earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it." Join us in this Sunday school class as we explore why and how we as Christians are called to care for the earth through biblical texts and practi-cal suggestions. Led by Steve Drew and others. WESTMINSTER CLASS

Starting May 3rd the Westminster class will study Making Sense of the Bible and the accompanying DVD by the Rev. Adam Hamilton. This six session series invites us adults of all ages into an honest con-versation about the Bible. The book begins with foun-dational questions such as, How and when was the Bible written? Who decided which books made it into the scriptures and why? How literally must we read it? And, Is the Bible ever wrong?

From there, Hamilton considers the real questions people frequently ask that continue to divide Chris-tians and denominations alike, including:

Were Adam and Eve real people?

Why is God so violent in the Old Testament?

Why would Paul command women to "keep si-lent in the church"?

Is Jesus the only way to salvation?

Is the Book of Revelation a guide to the End Times?

In approachable and inviting language, Hamilton ad-dresses these often misunderstood biblical themes leading readers to a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that we might hear God speak through it and find its words to be life-changing and life-giving.

Tend the Temple

Tend the Temple on a Bike

Biking is a great way to increase fitness, conserve natural resources, observe the beauty of God’s world and enjoy the fellowship of your fellow bik-ers. Guilford Park already has a handful of active and dedicated “bike nuts” who love the sport. THIS MESSAGE IS NOT FOR THEM. We hope the “bike nuts” will join us, but mostly so they can help us accomplish our goal: To get more GPPC members biking.

We are planning events that will be fun and useful for newer or less-recent bikers: Rides on Greensboro’s great bike path system,

starting with shorter, flatter rides for all Discussion of topics to help new riders, such as

Bike Safety; Equipment; Places to ride; Fixing flat tires and other minor repair.

Call Ed Hendricks at 288-7282 with questions.

Spring weather can be unpredictable. When severe weather hits unexpectedly, the risk of injury and death increases, so planning ahead makes sense. Pre-pare for storms, floods, and tornadoes as if you know in advance they are coming, because in the spring, they very likely will. Planning - Key to Tornado Survival Tornadoes develop very quickly; the violent ones, re-sponsible for most deaths, tend to move very fast. In fact, forward speeds of over 60 mph have been ob-served! Once a tornado is underway, time for planning has passed and immediate action must be taken to protect ourselves. Our plan has to be ready to meet the test.

Preparedness plans come in all sizes as dictated by our individual and collective needs, but it always comes down to the individual. Betting that the storm will not strike you may be the most costly wager you ever make.

Questions you should ask:

Do you know the basic safety rules?

How about your home shelter area?

Would your children know what to do if home alone? or what to do if they are away from home?

Do you have a planed check in point if something happens?

Are plans ready to move elderly or disable people
