The Music Video IndustryIn ‘History of music videos’ I looked into the reasons why music videos are
made and how they have developed to what they are today, now, were going to look at how they are made and the culture surrounding them.
Making a music video
There are 3 stages in making a music video, these are;•Pre production stage•The Productions stage•Post production stage
Pre production This stage involves all the planning steps that need to be thought out
before shooting the video actually begins. This means planning a potential storyline, actors, setting, choreographing dance routines.
Without a well thought out pre production stage, a video can end up looking messy, unorganised and unsophisticated. Pre production includes every detail that needs to be planned before it happens,
such as the actors outfits and hair/makeup or the type of lighting that will be used.
Pre production More importantly, this is where professional record labels
choose a production company and employees that they know will do a good job at producing a music video for their artist or band. Pre production could encompass
auditioning actors, creating storyboards and running trials at particular locations and settings. It is a vital part of the
process as it really reflects how the video turns out.
Production This is when the planning is put into action; actors
act and the filming begins. A huge amount more clips are filmed than necessary in order to get the
perfect shot. Plans can be altered during production if the producers think a particular element is not
working out or looking as good as it should.
Post Production This is the time to cut down and arrange the clips, edit and
add music. Most clips recorded will be discarded but the clips kept will be carefully studied to fit in best according to
their speed and in coherence with the music. Special effects/animation may be added here. For a music video, the most significant part of post production is editing and rendering the video. Then it needs to be made accessible
for audiences.
Advertising It’s important that once a music video has been made and
money has been spent; people see it. If it doesn’t reach a wide audience it cant fill its purpose which is to promote
the artist or band and their song/music. Platforms in which music videos can get to their audiences are through TV on programmes like MTV or Stars Tv which are dedicated to
streaming music videos, although MTV has branched out to other entertainment routes through their success. To spark interest they’ll sometimes pit two artists together to make a battle of their music (videos) where audiences can text in and vote for who they think is best. Another main platform
is Youtube which includes ‘channels’ specially made for showing music videos, an example of which is Vevo.
Directors Just like films, there are a huge number of aspiring and successful music video directors. Additionally there are award shows dedicated
to highlighting brilliant music videos and directors.
