Dear Friends at First Presbyterian,

As the weather rapidly warms and summer approaches, the church, too, moves into a new season, a season of service to our community. This is how we will connect with our neighbors who are not active in a church family.

For children, we will once again present our version of VBS each Sunday night in June. Last year we had up to thirty kids attending. Let’s promote this throughout the city. This year’s theme centers on the worldwide importance of clean water; a perfect

match for our Mexico cistern mission.

We are launching our four service opportunities for church members to volunteer, but also as the primary means to invite friends and guests to join us. To refresh, they include:

Restarting the weekly mentoring program at the public schools (was called Special Friends, but we will rename). Our church will lead this community-wide effort.

A new Spanish/English adult language exchange program to teach each other the basics of the other language. The Hispanic churches are excited about joining us. No language or teaching skills needed by volunteers.

Supporting our Boys & Girls Club through regular volunteering to help with homework, play games or just visit with the kids. Debbie Rooks is a very active volunteer, and she or Greg can get you started – very flexible opportunity.

And Handy Helpers, where we will assist the elderly or those in need of home repairs, yard work, or maintenance. This is already underway! See Jamie Hopkins to volunteer or to suggest those who might need some help.

On top of all this, we are working on new ways to describe ourselves to the community to let everyone know about these opportunities and to know they are welcome at First Presbyterian. Remember, too, that we can invite newcomers into our Connect Groups. I’m sure you have already noticed that we have strengthened our welcoming skills, diversified our music, hosted many community events and have members active throughout the city.

As a congregation, you have been loving each other as commanded by Jesus, and we look to extend this love wherever possible.

Grace and peace, Pastor Anne

P.S. My door is always open, and my mug ready for another cup of coffee!

On Sunday July 10 there will be a church picnic at the home of Mr. Jimmy Tyson, 315 Providence Rd. Denmark, fol-lowing the 10:30 a.m. Worship Service. We will grill hot dogs and hamburgers, and ask members to bring picnic side items. Please join us for a time of great food and fellowship.

Let’s go to Pinecrest on May 22! It’s the Presbytery’s Sharing our Stories of Faith event! Outdoor worship (moving inside for rain, of course), a little bluegrass hymn singing, soul-filling preaching would be enough, but we’ll add some great workshops, lending a helping hand, and sharing that delicious Pinecrest food to make this a memorable afternoon. Event is free. Meals are $10/adult and $6/child. Bring your chair! Coming with us? Registration is due May 8.
