Peekskill Presbyterian Church THE MESSENGER VOLUME 12, ISSUE 11 JULY 2011 Thank You for Filling Our Pantry Shelves Thanks to everyone who has helped keep our pantry shelves filled this year. The food pantry shelves in the Social Hall were an unexpected but enormously successful endeavor for our church. We’ve found that opening the shelves to our breakfast guests is an easy way to help members of our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. A number of people have wondered what kinds of contributions are most useful to the pantry. So, we’ve put together a short list of the items that fly off the shelves fastest. Any of these items can be left in the collection baskets in the narthex, sanctuary, or the CE lobby, and all will be greatly appreciated. Bottled juices such as Apple or Cranberry Rice Beans Tuna & other canned meats Breakfast Cereals Crackers & Granola Bars Canned Fruits Peanut Butter & (especially) Jelly Sundae Sunday, Save the Date!!!!! The Congregational Life Committee is hosting the Annual Sundae Sunday on July 17th. You will be treated to ice cream and all the fixings. So-o-o plan to stay after worship, skip lunch and just indulge yourself with ICE CREAM !!! Also, mark your calendars for August 21st when CL will treat all to the Peach Festival. Stewardship Corner

This month the Stewardship committee would like to thank Rosa Reed for sharing her time,

talents and treasure with Peekskill Presbyterian Church.

Rosa was raised in the Baptist tradition. When she moved to the Peekskill area in 1972 she began

her search for a new church home. Her search was long and wide until she entered PPC. The

warm and welcoming atmosphere appealed to Rosa, which led to her becoming a member in 1976.

Rosa credits Elaine Sampson and Charlotte Umland with recognizing her gifts for teaching. They

invited her to teach Sunday School. Rosa served in this role for many years; she eventually

became the Confirmation Class teacher when Rev. Lamb expanded the class to the two- year

program that we still use.

Rosa has served on both Deacons and Session, and acted as the clerk of Session. Her other

activities have included serving on the Christian Education Committee, membership on a former

Pastoral Nominating Committee, teaching at Choir Camp and membership with the Women of

Hope.

Rosa’s interests are numerous. She enjoys reading, music, embroidery, calligraphy, bobbin

lacemaking, knitting and crocheting. Once again Rosa’s gift for teaching has been put into

service. She leads a midweek crochet group at the church with Leonor Mancebo. She is happy to

introduce the craft of crochet to anyone wanting to learn. She is also involved in a lap robe project

on behalf of the Women of Hope. If you have ever had a desire to learn crochet, Rosa is the person

to show you how!

Thanks again, Rosa, for being a living example of Stewardship for all.

Mission Trip Car Wash – July 9th

Since the June car wash was rained out, all our cars are now dirtier than ever. The birds, the

bugs, the pollen . . . yuck. But there is hope. Come to the church on July 9th between 9 and 3

to have your car carefully and lovingly hand washed. The prices are great, $5 for cars and

$8 for trucks. All proceeds will be used to defray expenses for this month’s mission trip to

Maine. Come get your car clean and help us

get on the road again.

Community Breakfasts are now Summer Continental

Summer is upon us, and vacations have begun. But while many of us

are busy having fun in the sun, our church’s mission to help those in

need continues.

This month our community breakfast is scheduled for July 10th. We’ve

transitioned to a lighter continental style breakfast for the summer that was very well

received in June. Since many of our regular breakfast makers will be away, if you’re in town on

the 10th we’d love to have your help. Contact Cindy Bohler, Linda Johns, or Christine Button if

you can help set up or serve.

Good News Ministry The Good News Ministry had a very successful art show event in coordination with the Peekskill

Arts Council (Open Studios 2011). Good lines of communication were established with the Arts

Council and with some participating artists. Over 50 people visited the art exhibit by 25 artists in

the social hall and on the lawn (sculptures), despite rainy weather. An elaborate map/brochure

highlighted our location as well as the location of other venues.

The Ministry is continuing to develop a plan for a community night to be held once a month in the

social hall; when the plan is sufficiently developed in writing it will be presented to Corporate and

Business for its input and then to the Session for its approval. This will give us an opportunity to

reach out into the community in a very tangible way and to become a more integral part of the life

of the Peekskill area.

By the time you receive this issue of the Messenger Christine Button will have presented a

demonstration of the church website and facebook page during coffee hour. Members of the

congregation are reminded to look at the website from time to time to get updated on upcoming

church events, audios of sermons, news of the various Ministries, etc. Good News Ministry is still

interested in having a volunteer to help post church news events on LoHud.com or WHUD.com;

contact Christine Button if you would like to help.

In addition, this month our church marched in the Juneteenth Parade. It was wonderful to be part

of Peekskill's Emancipation Celebration. For more details, see below.

The Ministry has registered for this year’s Peekskill Days event in August. The event will run

5:00pm-9:00pm Friday August 5 and Saturday 9:00am-11:00pm. (There are Sunday activities, as

well, but the booths will not be there Sunday.) Stop by and visit our booth if you attend. If it goes

like last year it will be a lot of fun. The kids will have balloons and sticker tattoos galore. If you

would like to help at the booth contact any member of the Good News Ministry, Dick Belliveau,

Christine Button, Beverly Dyckman, Jamel Haight, or Dan Harrison.

Curious about how Presbyterian congregations have changed since 2001? Look at the report by

Cynthia Woolever and Deborah Bruce (“Looking Inside Presbyterian Congregations”) from the

General Assembly Mission Council Research Services. (See PC(USA) News & Announcements

([email protected]), Thursday, March 31, 2011 for an interesting summary of

study findings.)

The Juneteenth Parade The City of Peekskill’s first

annual Juneteenth Celebration

was a terrific success. It

included organizations from all

around the city that are

dedicated to bringing positive

change and healthy living to our

community. Hundreds of people

from local churches and scout

troops, dance, fitness, and

sporting groups, as well

marching bands and drill teams

turned out. The gospel music

concert at Riverfront Green was

inspirational and made clear that

Peekskill is ready for revival!

Our church’s participation in Juneteenth Day was small but mighty. Best of all, we were

privileged to witness first hand the wonderful work that God is doing in Peekskill, and we were

blessed to be able to reach out and be a part of it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Session Highlights

The Session continued to hear the progress of the hard-working Pastor Nominating Committee.

We all pray that their efforts will bear good and lasting fruit for Peekskill Presbyterian Church

and we urge the members of the congregation to be similarly supportive of their efforts and to be

patient as they go about their difficult and important business.

Session was pleased to vote membership for three outstanding young confirmands, Steven

DeNardo, Jake Kerkapoly, and Laura Walter, after receiving their statements of faith and hearing

their individual responses to a number of questions. Session also wishes to thank Norman Haight

for his good work as leader of the confirmation class.

Session also approved requests by Emmanuel and Julianne Asare, Jan and John Burke, Tracy

Lockhart, and Rebecca Smith to change their membership status to active.

Session continued to hear monthly financial reports from the Corporate and Business Ministry and

approved the appointment of Jim Terhune, a person with experience as a Presbyterian church

treasurer, as Treasurer for our church.

Session is closely monitoring the financial balances that have been thrown out of balance because

of greatly rising fuel costs, much higher-than-normal snow plowing, water damage and flooding,

and the costs involved in stripping and repainting the rear of the Christian education building and

one side of the sanctuary to assure that Head Start children are not exposed to unhealthy

conditions. At the moment we have a deficit ($14,978 through April 2011) that is a little more than

twice as high as had been anticipated because of these budgetary shocks.

Session urges members to keep up with their pledged contributions, especially during the summer

months when people are away; church expenses continue throughout the summer whether people

are here or not.

Session approved participating in an ecumenical Easter morning service at Verplanck prior to the

regular 10am Easter service at the church.

Session approved the church’s participation as a host for the Peekskill Arts Council’ Open Studios

event (see the Good News Ministry Messenger report). This event opened a good line of

communication to the vibrant Peekskill arts community and exposed our church to a substantial

number of visitors who came to view the art.

Session approved a matching contribution to a Presbytery challenge grant for the purpose of

acquiring an audio-visual system for the church; this system will be useful in a multitude of ways.

This will not take effect until the church finds a minister and a reapplication is made to

Presbytery next year. In the meantime the church will be engaged in outside fundraising to

support this initiative.

Session also approved a car wash/bake sale to raise funds for the Mission trip to Maine. These

mission trips have proved to be spiritually fulfilling for participants and very beneficial to those

being helped; they also strengthened the sense of community among participants.

I Was in Prison and You Visited Me… Again! In the past we have collected calendars to distribute to our brothers in Christ at Sing Sing

Correctional Facility. Lately, we have developed a connection with Father Paul at Westchester

County Jail, which is located in Valhalla. Father Paul is the chaplain at that facility.

I sent him a box of items that had been collected under the Presbytery Prison Partnership. It

included soft covered Bibles, stationery items, and calendars. I received a phone call expressing

his gratitude for the gift. He said that he could always use thing like this in his work with those

incarcerated there.

If you can supply any of these items, I will see that Father Paul receives them. In the case of

Bibles, they must be soft covered, new or gently used. If you have any Bibles in Spanish, they

would be welcome as well. Please give any donations to Caroline Renaud who will see that I get

them.

I receive stationery items in the mail from many charities. I cannot use all I receive. Won't you

join me in brightening someone else's day with something that may be mostly a nuisance to you?

What a nice turn around!

Thank you for your help.
