THE MESSENGER The Peekskill Presbyterian Church August 2019

    A Faithful Friend

Mikah has already begun to train me. He is also an early riser, so

my usual quiet time is now interrupted by puppy pads and Cesar’s

filet mignon dog food. I am or I was a die-hard cat lady. I still have

a relationship with Malekai and Melkezidek, my cats who live in

Maryland with my Godmother; but lately I have wanted to have a

cute little puppy to keep me company while Michael was traveling.

Of course, now, Michael is here for several months but, anyway, I

walked into the breeder’s home and it was love at first sight. Well

not really, there was this incredibly precious little morkie who stole

my heart at first. She was so cute and tiny with black, brown, white,

and grey curls, but I had my heart set on a male puppy.

Then my niece Gabrielle pointed to Mikah. When I picked him up, he

stretched out on my chest like his prayers had finally been answered.

We played with him and held him for about 20 minutes, then I came

to my senses and decided not to be impulsive, but to instead think

about him at least overnight. If I still felt his presence the next day

as strongly as I did when holding him, I knew he would have to be-

come a part of our family. I seriously considered buying both of the

puppies and breeding them, then I was assured that that would be

unwise, adding a whole new dimension of learning, caring and con-

    sulting to my life.

Well, needleless to say, I still felt him. As our relationship grows, I

am learning at a new level, what it means to be patient and forgiv-

ing. He likes Michael, but his love for me seems to be uncondition-

al. He whines and cries with a sense of urgency whenever I leave

    his sight.

As difficult as it is, I have been forced to remember that he is not a

baby, and unless I properly train him, this could go south pretty

quickly. As he learns the ins and outs of life as a P.P. (pastor’s pet),

I am sure that he would love to attend some meetings and

accompany me to the office on occasion. Until then, wish us well.

    MUSIC CORNER

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. As we begin preparing the music calendar for the year, begin thinking about if there are any groups you’d enjoy being a part of. If you are already a member, keep your eyes open for some announcements about meetings in the next few weeks.

    Driving Blind

It should have been a fun evening. I was going to my nephew’s birthday party. He was turning 35! I hadn’t seen

him or my family for a while and was looking forward to being there. It was getting there that was the problem.

Usually my husband would be driving, but he was busy and so I had to get there by myself. To make matters worse,

my brother had moved recently, and it wasn’t so easy to find his house. It was also rush hour. I decided to go the

long way around, taking the Bear Mountain rather than the Tappan Zee and come south, avoiding traffic. Seemed

like a good plan! I set my phone for driving directions and off I went.

At first everything was fine, smooth sailing and no traffic. My first decision point was when I had to get off the Pal-

isades and take Route 202. I wasn’t quite sure which direction to go. My GPS warned me in advance- go right on

202 toward Haverstraw. As I pulled up at the stop sign at the end of the ramp, it ordered me -G0 RIGHT ON 202,

toward Haverstraw. There in front of me was a giant sign that said Haverstraw with a big arrow toward the left! I

decided to go toward Haverstraw. After all, if that was the wrong decision, I was confident that the GPS would turn

my around. Not too scary at all. Except that is not what happened. Instead of turning me around, the GPS sent me

off on a side road. At first I thought it was just getting me back to Route 202, but I was wrong. I realized it was tak-

ing me over back country roads and I had made so many turns by then that there was no possibility to backtrack. I

would simply have to trust my GPS.

There wasn’t much traffic. In fact, I seemed to be the only car on the road. Still I was pretty nervous. I drove

through beautiful countryside on back roads and followed signs to towns I had never heard of. After a while, I be-

gan to forget my worry and simply enjoy the adventure. My only choice, after all, was to trust the GPS and, in the

end, it did get me to my destination.

As I drove, I began to realize that this ride was a little bit like life and my GPS in some ways resembled God! I usu-

ally like to pick my route and am not particularly fond of not knowing where I am going. Yet when I was forced

into relinquishing control, I had a wonderful time and saw things I would never have seen otherwise. My GPS, like

God, had a plan for me, a different plan than I would have made and a plan that took me to places I could never have

chosen for myself. Over the years God has shown me a lot of creation and put me in amazing places. I am thankful

that I was trusting enough to follow the path set before me, and I am sure that, relying on God, I will always end up

at the right place. Right where God wants me to be!

Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. (Psalm 25:4)
