FROM PASTOR MATTHEW MILLER…

Glory to God Back in 2004 the 216th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) asked for a feasibility study into the creation of a new Presbyterian Hymnal. Two years later at the next General Assembly the results were re-ported and that assembly authorized the research, development and produc-tion of a new hymnal. In the fall of 2008 fifteen individuals were selected to form the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song, or (because who doesn’t love a good acronym when they see it- the PCOCS.) Yes, you read that right, it’s pronounced like ‘peacocks.’ They began their work by writing guiding theological and language state-ments as a framework for the work ahead of them. This set the stage for en-riching and challenging conversations throughout a process that examined tunes’ singability, theology’s deepest questions, and texts’ clarity. After cull-ing through over 10,000 submissions, 3 years of meetings, and countless hours of homework, the PCOCS's had their final meeting in January 2012. This past November, our church was fortunate to host one of the national events to launch the use of this new hymnal in the Church (PCUSA). we glorify god in our lives- and not just us, but all of creation. A pastor whose work I enjoy has suggested that one way of thinking about God, and in particular our relationship with God, is to imagine God as a song that we’re invited to sing, a tune that we lend our voices to. Like any good piece of music there are multi-ple parts, and not every one needs sing or play the same line, but we are all invited into power that song has to sing of something that cannot be expressed in any other way. There are times when we fall out of tune, or for-get the words, and that is when it’s nice to know that there are others who can carry the tune for us and help us pick it up again when we’re able. That’s the power of singing together and the beauty of having one book with which we can all be on the same page. I am eager to sing songs both familiar and new with you as together we glorify God with our hearts and souls and voices. ---Matthew

GENEROSITY: Commit to God – Commit to Give Gratitude is a response to grace. The compassionate life is a grateful life, and actions born out of gratefulness are not compulsive but free, not somber but joyful, not fanatical but liberating. When gratitude is the source of our actions, our giving becomes receiving and those to whom we minister become our ministers. ~ Unknown (from Presbyterian Foundation Favorite Quotes)

SAVE THE DATE FOR FAMILY PROMISE

SUNDAY, FEB 23RD – SUNDAY, MARCH 2ND

Family Promise is an inter-faith ministry which helps homeless families by providing free room and board in churches and synagogues until they get back on their feet. We will host families in Westminster for the week of Feb 23 – March 2nd. You can sign up to volunteer in the Commons. For more information, please see coordinators, Ann Calderwood and Mary Anne Meredith. Thanks for helping to make a difference.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE (MATTEUCCI) Luke Matteucci, gave us a list of scriptures that all have to

Do with “THANKS”. We would like to share those with you in the next few Sunday bulletins and Messengers:

I Chronicles 16:8 - Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations of what he has done.

FPC 2013 MEMBERSHIP ADDITIONS The first six months of 2013 were very good ones for our church. It began in January when Bonita and Dean Tooley joined us. They moved here from Taos and were ready to participate immediately! They had each served as Deacons and brought experience and a willingness to serve within the church family. February was a banner month. Ka-ren Beaton and Thomas Ponder became

affiliate members. Tom has been finishing his term of office at Rio Ran-cho Presbyterian. It’s romantic to think of Karen moving here from Prov-idence, RI and meeting Tom at church. Karen is especially fond of our

music.**** Martha and David Meister are quite at home at First Pres – Martha grew up in this congregation, married David here, and likes being in the same church as their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren Laurel and Jake.**** We were also blessed by Thien Pham seeking baptism and membership. A native of Viet Nam, Thien is studying music at UNM and has found a home in our choir.

Karen Halderson joined the congregation in March. She had served as an elder in one of her previous churches. With Karen’s degree in dietetics and interest in diabetes, she’s very well traveled. Her work put her in Carol Marr’s path and she’s become an active member in the Kerygma PW Circle. Mary Lou Edward was especially happy to welcome her son John and his wife Gayle into membership. They have three young children to keep Grandma Mary Lou hap-

py and busy. The lovely month of May saw the graduation of the Confirmation class. This brought us nine

enthusiastic members! Meredith Watson learned the most im-portant lesson – “Trust in God”. She is a 8th grader at Menaul School and daughter to Paul and Sallie

Watson and sister to Alex. Her favorite part of this portion of God’s family is her friendships and the acceptance she has found here. Alex Watson, also son to Sallie and Paul, is an 9th grader at Menaul School. Alex felt that he really began to know Christ through the Confirmation class. His favorite line from class;” God is the pitcher and I am the cup. When I am low you fill me up.” Both Alex and Meredith have participated in the worship service by doing the Bible readings from the pulpit. Carlena Reid Sanchez is an 9th grader at Volcano Vista High School and daughter of Janet and Andrew Sanchez. She’s quite familiar with the church having been the first child baptized in 2000. Carlena sees God as our GPS for life--- what a good statement of faith! (continued on page 4)

PRESBYTERIAN MESSENGER * PAGE 4

(continued from page 3) An 9th grader at Jefferson Middle School Early College Academy, Anna Fisher Rebstock, is the daughter of Deb Fisher and John Rebstock. Anna sees the church as filled with positive energy and happy people as befits God’s house. Anna shared that she has felt God’s sheltering love. She also ap-preciates that no one “yells” at her for procrastinating on her homework---it’s a stress-free zone. Elizabeth Mather, daughter of Geoff and Ellen Mather , is a 7th grader at Desert Ridge Mid-dle School. She lists what she likes best at FPC are the donuts, friends, and teachers! On a serious note, Elizabeth feels,” I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” She is a very percep-tive 13 year old. Zarlish Irfan Mall is an 9th grader at Westm Mesa High School. His parents are Irfan and Lubna Mall. Zarlish’s Statement of Faith is beautiful. He is filled with the love of God and with his trust in Christ and the Holy Spirit to sustain him. “Friends come and go like the seasons, but God is a friend who’ll never leave.” Simona Irfan Mall, sister of Zar lish, shares Lubna and Ir fan Mall as parents. She is a sophomore at West Mesa High School. Prayer is very important to Simona and she feels His presence in their ongoing conversation. She enjoys her church friends and likes the wonderful preaching she hears at FPC. Natalie Ann Cook, a 8th grader at Menaul School, can usually be found in a front row seat at Sunday service, with her parents Lyndee and George Cook and her siblings. Natalie has really begun feeling God’s presence through her Conformation classes. She says that God is her new best friend. Carissa Alexis Cook, in addition to being Natalie’s sister and Lyndee and George Cook’s daughter, is in the 10th grade at La Cueva High School. Carissa’s Statement of Faith shows that she has discovered that the depression and angst common to teenagers, can be alleviated by God when you allow Him to be your BFF. Of the nine Confirmands, four grew up in FPC, three came from Russia, and two are from Paki-stan. Thanks to the teaching of Karen Hill, Sharon Elliott, and Freddie Martinez, all nine have grown

in faith and love. In June we were blessed with the addition of two new families, the Haverlocks and the Elders. Todd and Miki Haver-lock were marr ied at Fir st Presbyter ian in 2010 and are now the parents of Samuel. Miki and Sam were both baptized on June 16. Miki grew up in a military family and has traveled all over the world. She currently works as a Revenue Analyst at Presbyterian Hospital. Todd works at Sandia Labs and enjoys photograpy. Daniel, Samantha, Jeremiah and Jasper Elder were also baptized on June 16. The Elder family visited FPC at the suggestion of Daniel’s grandparents, members. Bill and Beulah Elder.

Our 2013 New Members will be honored at the Third Week Fellowship Luncheon on Sun-day, January19th, 12:00 p.m., in Fellowship Hall.

A PLACE AT THE TABLE Please join the Mission Committee for a screening of the 2012 documentary, A Place at the Ta-ble. “Fifty million Americans—1 in 4 children—don’t know where their next meal is coming from. A Place at the Table tells the powerful stories of three such Americans, who maintain their dignity even as they struggle just to eat. In a riveting journey that will change forever how you think about the hungry, A Place at the Table shows how the issue could be solved forever, once the American public decides—as they have in the past—that ending hunger is in the best interests of us all.” From www.magpictures.com/aplaceatthetable. Please join us on Sunday, January 12th from 5-7.30pm in Fellowship Hall for a light supper

and screening of the movie or on Sunday, January 26th from 12.30-3pm in Fellowship Hall for a light lunch and second screening of the film. Please RSVP in the church office for lunch or dinner.

For more information, please contact Karen Hill or any member of the Mission Committee.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF SCIENCE AND THEOLOGY Two crucial forces, science and theology, helped shape Western civilization and continues to interact in our daily lives. What is the nature of their relationship? When do they conflict, and how do they influence each other in pursuit of knowledge and truth? Contrary to prevailing notions that show how more they must perpetually clash, science and theology have actually been partners in an age-old adventure. This course covers both the historical sweep and philosophical flashpoints of this epic in-teraction. This course starts on January 5th at 10:00 in Room 220.
