As I write these words, blankets of snow cover everything in view beyond my dining room window and a hot cup of coffee sits easily within reach. You know what it

means when we enter into this version of winter? The world is begging us to slow down.

Don’t rush out too quickly. Road conditions are suspect. Sip, don’t gulp, this drink. The goal is for it to warm and wake you, not make it so you can’t taste dinner’s chili. Be careful out there, even as you walk. Slow and steady will lessen slippage and likely keep you on your feet.

We don’t always welcome this change of pace. But we need it.

Which is one reason I find it nice that the Lenten season often at least partially parallels our Missouri winter. In this way the forces outside and inside our church gatherings call us to a similar, slower, more reflective pace. Even as you’re reading this, I hope you’re choosing to rethink your approach to the days ahead.

May God use this February to periodically pull your nose up from the grindstone. May the snows of Liberty and the desert of Lent slow you down so that you might be opened up to the Easter-shaped direction Christ wants to take your life next.

With love,

Jason EdwardsSenior Pastor

Feb. 7 | 3:00 p.m. | 2BCFor the past several years, our children have made valentines for the patients at Children’s Mercy Hospital. It’s been a great success, and we have contributed some awesome valentines for those kiddos who won’t be participating in a valentine party at their school. Children from K – fifth grade will meet in the Assembly Room on Sunday afternoon to create all sorts of wonderful cards and messages. No registration necessary...come join us!

High School Non-Stop Trip Feb. 12-14Feb. 12-14 Minneapolis, MN | Cost: $75February 12-14 (Fri.-Sun.) high school students will road trip to Minnesota to take in the sights including the Minneapolis Art Institute and the Mall of America.

Minneapolis is about 6 hours away. We'll leave early Friday afternoon, spend all day Saturday touring Minneapolis, then head back to KC on Sunday morning. There is no school on Friday or Monday that weekend, so there will be recovery time built in.

We'll spend the nights at a church in Minneapolis. Meals in MN will be covered by the $75 cost. Students will only need to bring money for meals on the road and any snacks or souvenirs they want buy in Minnesota. Visit 2bcliberty.org/seniorhigh to sign up!

Tips for Worshipping with ChildrenSome thoughts for the whole congregation from our Children’s Pastor, Gwen PhillipsBecause our church family values children so much, consider these reminders as we invite them to worship with us:

• Greet children as well as adults, and be as intentional about knowing children’s names as you are about adults.

• Hand them the offering plate rather than passing it over their heads.

• Pass the Friendship Register to children too. If they take up a whole page to write their name, that’s fine!

• See that children are offered a worship guide, and let them know about the worship bags at the doors.

• Remember that children have gifts to share with older members of the worshiping community. Welcome their presence with us. Offer encouragement and words of support to all parents. It’s a tough job!

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”

The School Connections Team and the Schumacher Sharks Say, “Thanks 2BC!”“Ask and you shall receive.” How true that is of Second Baptist Church!

The School Connections Team recently asked members to donate hats, mittens, gloves and scarves to the children at Schumacher Elementary. We are happy to say we collected 57 hats, 57 sets of gloves/mittens, 6 scarves, and 1 headband!

We also sent out a request for a table and chairs for a needy family. Thanks to a very generous member, we delivered a table with 3 leaves and six chairs to the family this past week!

Thanks so much for your continued generosity!

Care for Children During the 11a ServiceExtended Session is the time when loving childcare providers care for our youngest 2BC members during the 11:00 a.m. service. Ideally, extended session is a service that youth and adults can sign up for two or three times a year. If every parent of a preschooler will take his/her turn, we can make that possible!

For more information about extended session, or to sign up to serve, contact Gwen Phillips at [email protected].

Student Ministry Meal Providers NeededEach Sunday, we like to provide a light breakfast and "snack supper" for the students at church, and we'd like to invite anyone in our church family to help! We have two spots to fill for each meal each week, so everyone will have a partner to team up with for each meal.

As we are preparing meals, we do need to be conscious of food allergies. We avoid using nuts of any kind in our food preparation and we try to provide some alternative options (gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.) when possible.

To sign up to provide Sunday breakfast or Sunday night snack supper, contact Charles Smith at [email protected] or 781-2824.

Visit 2bcliberty.org/serveat2bc for more information and sign up links.

Be A Youth Mentor at Schumacher ElementaryThe School Connections Team invites you to impact a child’s life by serving as a Youth Mentor. Adults spend one hour per week with a child at Schumacher Elementary to inspire them to succeed and challenge them to do their best. These volunteers not only help the children, they help the teachers and schools reach their goals in serving the educational needs of their students.Mentors can choose from a number of in-school activities to enrich a child’s life. You might have lunch with a student, tutor, share special talents or interests, read, or simply be a good friend who listens. This can be done one-on-one or in a small group of children. If you’d like to serve, request an application from Debbie Lane at [email protected] or from the program’s coordinator, Colleen Jones, at [email protected]. Applicants attend an interview and a short training session, and a background check will be conducted.

LENT2016the Gospel of the

NOBODIESOur 2016 Lenten Devotional booklet will be available starting Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10. This season’s focus is on The Gospel of the Nobodies. As well as devotionals to guide us for each Sunday of Lent and for each day of Holy Week, we’ll also read through the Gospel of Luke as a church family. It will serve to remind us how Jesus, by His example, turned the way we treat one another — especially the undervalued and our own personal feelings of unworthiness — upside down.

Options to receive the Lenten Devotional:

• Pick up a hard copy at the Welcome Center desk • Receive the devotionals each morning via email. If you already receive the weekly

eblasts, you'll get the devotional emails as well. Sign up on the homepage at 2bcliberty.org to get on the list!

• Visit 2bcliberty.org/lent to read them on a computer or device.
