I love the fall. Screen doors become front doors. New splashes from nature’s paintbrush make it difficult to stay inside. Festivals and parades beckon us outward to Rockwellian places that feel like the past - places in our memory where time seemed slower, where

others seemed more like neighbors, and where rich, meaningful community was a blessing we could easily take for granted.

Do you remember a place like that? Is it past? Or are those holy seasons in our lives actually examples of the future breaking into the present? I think so. When we find ourselves reveling in the goodness of nature, beauty, friendship and community, we are reveling in some of our Creator’s most sacred gifts to us. In their most uncorrupted forms, these are places where our best past and our best future meet in the middle. And we feel it. It feels like peace. It feels like home.

The wind of God’s Spirit is blowing all around us. We can miss it in church as easily as anywhere else. Let’s not do that. Instead, this Fall, let us seek God wherever God may be found. On Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, may we gather with the expectation that Jesus will fulfill His promise – that where two or more are gathered in His name, He is will be with us in a special way. And then, as we depart, may we go forth as persons on mission, ready to gather and receive God’s Spirit everywhere It may be found (i.e. everywhere), ready to point to it wherever it needs to be seen, and ready to work with it whenever opportunity finds us. In this way, we we’ll increasingly find ourselves becoming ambassadors of God’s grace and God’s peace - experiencing and offering spaces and places that simply and deeply feel like home.

As the leaves fall this year, may each of us also fall more and more in love with Jesus.

World Communion Service Oct. 4

This year, 2BC will take part in a World Communion Service with our neighbor churches in the downtown area. The purpose of the service is to renew a commitment to unity in the larger body of Christ and to enjoy fellowship and camaraderie with brothers and sisters in Christ beyond our 2BC family.

As part of our 11:00 worship service that day, we will walk together to the space in front of the Justice Center downtown and celebrate Communion by intinction together with our friends from churches including St. Luke AME Church, First Presbyterian Church, Liberty Christian Church and more.

2BC Team World Vision: So Little Can Do So MuchThere are just a few weeks left to donate to support 2BC Team World Vision and to make a real change in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Africa whose lives have been put on hold by the crisis of a lack of clean water. To many of us, $50 may mean a family lunch out after church, or a trip to the store to “pick up a few things.” But what if it could mean more? Through Team World Vision’s comprehensive, complex and sustainable methods, $50 can bring clean water to a person for life. Could you donate $50? If not, what could you give?

Visit teamworldvision.org/team/secondbaptist to donate to an individual team member or to the team as a whole.

Linda Jones: 10 years serving 2BCA note of congratulations from Larry Gregory, 2BC Property Manager:

“A little over 10 years ago, Linda Jones came to the church office as a volunteer. She helped out until an opportunity opened to be hired on full time as the Ministry Assistant. Then, in 2007, she moved to the Church Administrator position she holds today, and what a great day that was for our church. As a

part of our Ministry Team, she has been a very valuable asset. Linda is ready for whoever needs her assistance. She takes care of many details that no one typically sees, not to mention making sure the payroll is made and the bills are paid. After a lengthy process and a lot of hard work and study, Linda achieved her certification in Church Administration this summer. Tell her congratulations on achieving this next time you see her.

As the Property Manager, I work directly with Linda in caring for our church property, and she is key to the process. She played a major role in the church renovation and just generally cares about our church. I really can’t emphasize enough how important Linda is to the day-to-day operational activity of Second Baptist Church.

Please join me in congratulating her on a great 10 years of service.”

God’s purpose is a theme which is abundant throughout scripture. While searching for some of the ways the word “purpose” is used throughout the Bible, I could only giggle when I stumbled across Proverbs 19:21. The vast truth in these simple words struck me. Pardon the cliché, but it sure is easy to lose sight of the forest for the trees!

Team SERVE has spent the last several months discussing, developing, and debating the best ways to foster a culture of equipping at 2BC. In September, the Team SERVE leadership spent several hours clarifying our purpose and our mission: “helping you find your place to serve using your God-given gifts.” To guide us in fulfilling this mission, we will focus on three goals:

• Building excitement to increase engagement

• Implementing a spiritual gifts assessment process and capturing the results in a searchable database

• Matching people to specific needs and service opportunities within the church that results.

purpose | [pur-puh s] |: (n)The reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc.

We humans keep brainstorming options and plans, but God’s purpose prevails.Proverbs 19:21 (MSG)

As we forge ahead with our goals and plans, our prayer is to remain focused on God’s purpose.

Serve During Extended SessionExtended session is the time when loving childcare providers care for our youngest 2BC members during the 11:00 a.m. service. Ideally, extended session is a service that youth and adults can sign up for two or three times a year. If every parent of a preschooler will take his/her turn, we can make that possible!

For more information about extended session, or to sign up to serve, contact Gwen Phillips at [email protected].

Student Fall Semester Meal Providers NeededEach Sunday, we like to provide a light breakfast and "snack supper" for the students at church, and we'd like to invite anyone in our church family to help! We have two spots to fill for each meal each week, so everyone will have a partner to team up with for each meal.

As we are preparing meals, we do need to be conscious of food allergies. We avoid using nuts of any kind in our food preparation and we try to provide some alternative options (gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.) when possible.

To sign up to provide Sunday breakfast or Sunday night snack supper, contact Charles Smith at [email protected] or 781-2824.

Trunk or Treat Oct. 31There are two ways you can serve at our annual Trunk or Treat Oct. 31:

DECORATE YOUR TRUNKWe need to fill our parking lots with decorated trunks children can visit to get candy! Our 2BC family has always had fun with this one. If you’d like to take part, let Maggie Henderson know at 816-781-2824 or [email protected].

DONATE CANDYWe’ll need lots of individually-wrapped candy to give out the night of the event. Bring candy and leave it at the office front desk.

The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Heartland has named Jeff Langford as the new coordinator of CBF Heartland effective January 2016. Langford, who currently serves as the associate

coordinator for Heartland, was unanimously elected at the September 19 meeting of the organization's Coordinating Council. Harold Phillips, who has served as CBF Heartland's coordinator for the past 20 years, will remain with CBF Heartland and assume the role of Church Benefits Advocate, helping CBF-partner churches engage in best practices for sabbaticals, retirement and congregational health.

Jeff Langford (second from left) with Michael Olmsted, Nancy Thompson and Harold Phillips.A native of Clinton, Mo., Langford is a graduate of the University of Central Missouri and Purdue University and has been associate coordinator for CBF Heartland for 10 years. He and his wife, Sara, were married in 1991 and have three children. Langford is a lay leader at Second Baptist Church in Liberty, where he serves as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. "I couldn't be more excited to serve CBF Heartland in this new role," Langford said. "As churches, organizations and followers of Christ, we are faced with incredible opportunities to partner in renewing God's world. I am humbled and grateful to be a part of CBF Heartland's vibrant and vital work in inspiring leaders, transformative missions and engaging communities." CBF Heartland Coordinating Council Moderator Nancy Thompson noted that CBF Heartland was fortunate to already have on staff someone with the leadership skills necessary to follow Phillips as coordinator. "Jeff has the qualities of the Council was seeking to continue engaging churches and individuals in CBF Heartland's varied ministries," Thompson said. "He will make the task of transitioning to new leadership easy, and with Harold's presence and involvement in CBF Heartland for the foreseeable future, the work of our ministry partners will continue uninterrupted."

Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Executive Coordinator Suzii Paynter praised CBF Heartland's choice in the selection of Langford. "I am thrilled that Jeff has been called to fill this position," Paynter said. "He has been a faithful partner in ministry and mission in CBF Heartland churches for many years. Jeff is well known across the states ad regions of CBF as a demonstrated leader and creative partner in broader CBF life. We are excited to see the work that he does to grow the region and continue to partner with CBF Global in meaningful ways. We pray for a smooth transition of leadership as Harold Phillips passes this torch, and we know that his leadership will continue to be present in the Heartland." Phillips welcomed Langford's leadership as he moves into a new role himself.

"Jeff has brought tremendous professional and people skills to the organization," Phillips said. "He is extraordinarily prepared to provide leadership to CBF Heartland as we move forward. Jeff 's ability to nurture and encourage has been shaped by a recognition of the needs of churches to be their best. He brought tremendous professional and people skills to what was then CBF of

Missouri. He is keenly prepared to provide leadership for CBF Heartland." After 20 years in his position with CBF Heartland, Phillips added that the "best part" of his role as Church Benefits Advocate will be the ability to continue relating to pastors and laity in the Heartland. "We have made significant strides in creating a Young Baptist Ecosystem with Camp Connect, working with Passport Camps, Student. Go (CBF's student missions initiative), Student.Church (CBF's congregational internship program) and college ministry leaders," Phillips said. "The Roma Road Partnership in Slovakia and Romania continues to flourish even as we embark on an exciting new partnership with CBF field personnel Jenny Jenkins and her work in Haiti."

"The process leading to a new coordinator began with a suggestion from Harold Phillips at the beginning of this year," said CBF Heartland Past Moderator Michael Olmsted. "We have been blessed and have grown in ministry through Harold's capable leadership these past 20 years, and we anticipate a bright future as we build on a noteworthy past and discover new opportunities to be the presence of Christ in these challenging days."

About CBF Heartland CBF Heartland is a community of Baptist Christians and churches who share a passion for the Great Commission of Jesus Christ and a commitment to Baptist principles of faith and practice. Their mission is to serve Christians and churches as they discover and fulfill their God-given purpose.

2BC STEPHEN MINISTERS ARE THE ”AFTER” PEOPLE. . . after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.. . . after the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of your life.. . . after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.. . . after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, there’s nothing more we can do.”. . . after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away—and the house suddenly seems empty.. . . after the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on and your loved one is led away.. . . after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you dreamed possible.. . . after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.. . . after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.

Stephen Ministers are 2BC members ready to come alongside you and provide comfort and support for as long “after” as needed.
