Dearly beloved in Christ,

And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘’Behold, I am making all things new.’’ - Rev. 21:5 We are eagerly waiting for the new year. Each new year gives us the emotion of a fresh start. Thus this is a time for new beginnings. We often start with great intentions and then fail miserably within a couple of months. This year, let us resolve to grow closer to Christ who is able to keep us from falling. Let us seek God’s guidance and power to live our faith. Our risen Lord and living God Jesus Christ says ‘’Behold I will make all things new.’’ From his experience Saint Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, 'If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away and the new has come.' For Paul, it happened on the Damascus road. He was a very zealous man who actually thought that he was doing good and in obedience to the law. In spite of great learning, he was spiritually blind. He depended on his own righteousness and on the law. Saul dis-covered that Jesus of Nazareth was actually alive. He also discovered that he was a lost sinner who deserved the judgment of God. He trusted Jesus Christ and became a new person. The Lord had a special purpose for Saul to do. The Hebrew of the Hebrews became the apostle to the gentiles. The persecutor became the proclaimer of the good news. Paul's conversion is an inspiration to any lost sinner Thus Saul of Tarsus sur-rendered his life to Christ and became the founder of the Christian church. A new creation has a fresh relationship with God. His old self died with Christ. His death on the cross Jesus broke the power of sin. Thus a per-son who is in Christ can have victory over the sinful nature that controlled him. Someone has said 'Life is what you are alive to'. A believer is dead to sin and alive to Christ. St. Paul wrote 'For me to live is Christ' A new creation has also a fresh relationship with his fellow men. This we can see in the life of Zaacheus, the chief tax collector described in St.Luke chapter 15. Before Zaacheus met Jesus, he was a greedy, dis-honest and self-centered man. The encounter with Jesus transformed him into a generous, truthful and christ-centered person. He started thinking of others. His speech, character, deeds, plans, and purposes were changed. The life of Sadhu Sundar Singh is an example of this new life through Christ.

Jesus transforms lives. He can change any person. By our own efforts, we cannot attain this new life. A bad tree cannot bear good fruit unless it is grafted to a good tree. By abiding in Christ, we can become a fruitful person. May the holy spirit enable us to be in Christ each day of the new year. I thank all the office bearers, executive committee members and commit-tee members for their sincere and dedicated work throughout the year. Let's pray the upcoming be guided by Holy Spirit so that they can work for the betterment of the church and the humanity with love, care and unity. May God bless us all and I wish 2020 brings us joy, peace and love.

With love and prayers,

Sajit achen

Dearly beloved in Christ,

We are at a beginning of not only a new year, but also a new decade. As a Christian, as we embark a new year it is important for us to have the desire to change certain aspects of our lives that takes us away from our journey with God and to see in what ways we can submit to the will of God more. Let that be the goal for this New Year. We are all getting ol-der and not younger, therefore as time progresses, maturity for the same is something to always meditate on and we should be all God wants us to be rather that what we just want for ourselves.

This month in our lectionary, especially to dedicate ourselves to God for the New Year, we commemorate January 12 as Temperance Day: honor our body as the Temple of the Living God. P. T. Barnum was once asked when he was giving an address, "How does alcohol affect us, externally or internally?" Barnum responded "Eternally.” As we meditate on tem-perance, let us look into not just alcohol, but our selfish desires and emo-tions and see if it is align with God’s desires. It is a process to dedicate our whole being and deny ourselves and be all that God wants us to be. We should ask ourselves the question, are we respecting ourselves as well as those around us understanding we are the dwelling place of God? This requires us to look at what goes in and out of our bodies. No matter what we do, we should communicate the goodness of God as our joy and resting place. We cannot do this alone. It is a relationship we grow in God that enables us to desire His mind and His ways. Philip-pians 4:13 states the famous words that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Even if it not popular, or if it is a challenge to live for God, let us journey with God and grow in His love and communi-cate that love to the world around us.

Wishing all of you a blessed New Year 2020

Much love,

Jess Achen

Page 6: THE LONG ISLAND MAR THOMA CHURCH

Dearly beloved in Christ

HE LIGHTS THE WAY Psalm 112:4

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

A missionary in Peru went to visit a group of believers one evening. She knew that the house where they were meeting was located on a cliff and the path would not be easy. As she rounded a bend, she suddenly came upon several believers carrying a bright lanterns. They had come out to light the way. Her fears were relieved, and she ascended the path easily.

In a similar way, God lights our path. When we trust Jesus as our Savior, He who is the Light of the world enters our lives and removes the dar-kness of our sin and despair. This light continues to comfort us through times of sorrow. In the midst of sadness, trouble, illness, or disappoint-ment, the Lord brightens the way and encourages His children by giving hope.

This may come through a word of exhortation from a fellow believer. It may be the illumination of God’s Word by the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Or it may be the miraculous supply of a specific need. Whatever the case, God sends light when we are engulfed in darkness.

Jesus lights the way in the darkest night! God sometimes puts us in the dark to show us that Jesus is the Light, and He is the Light of the World.

In closing, I want to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for your help, support and encouraging words during the year. I also want to thank Sajit Achen and family, 2019 Office Bearers, the Executive Committee Members, the Parsonage Construction Sub-Committee Members, Handicap Access / Elevator Project Sub-Committee members, the Praise and Worship Team, and all Organizational Representatives and members.

I am honestly looking forward to work with the newly elected members in the Team, and together we build a more visionary outlook for the future generation.

Wishing you all a Happy, Healthy and Blessed New Year
