40 Days of Awakening

Color in the flowers as you do any of these activities during the 40 days of Lent

Dearly beloved in Christ,

I am happy that I could visit St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Kuwait in the month of February 2013. It is after about 5 years that I am visiting Kuwait and I am grateful to the invitation extended to me by the St. Thomas Parish. This is a home coming and I am glad that I could renew my acquaintances and meet new friends. I praise God for your love, hospitality and fellowship. Kindly continue to uphold me in your prayers.

You invited me as the chief guest of your harvest festival. I am marveled at the talents you have, the hard work you put in and the enthusiasm in bringing together all your friends for the day’s program. It is quite appropriate that you are supporting mission activities and social services from the proceeds of the fest. It will be more meaningful when you yourself involve and get related to the mission activities which aims at the integrated development of a village community in India. The mission and ministry of the church is ‘community formation and community living’.

We have entered in to the great Lent that spreads to 50 days. These are days when we meditate upon the incarnation, public ministry, death on the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These meditations are aimed at self-examination, sanctification and victorious Christian living. I love to call this as ‘Journeying with Christ’. It has four significant steps:

Journeying with Christ is to understand the person and the work of Christ. St. Paul exhorts the believers in Philippi (Phil. 2:5) to have the same input of Christ. Can we follow him to understand him, day after day.

Journeying with Christ is to put into practice what Jesus, has taught us. Jesus, through the sermon at the mount, tells us that it is important, not simply to hear the teachings, but also to put them into practice (Mtt. 7:21-27).

Journeying with Christ means to be transformed in life. Every encounter with Jesus brings in transformation in life. The sacrament of Baptism reminds us of an identification with the death and resurrection of Jesus. St. Paul says I am crucified with Christ, it is no longer I that live, but Christ that lives in me (Gal. 2:20).

Journeying with Christ means to follow Him all through the days of our life. The resurrected Jesus asks Simon Peter, even after commissioning him to follow Him. See the two times Jesus is saying this in St. John 21:19 and 22.

May the season of Lent this year bring transformation in the life of all of us and empower us with the power of this resurrection for a fruitful Christian living.
