The Huntington Beach Pier

celebrated the newly renovated

pier buildings and new Visitor

Kiosk in a ceremony that was held at

Pier Plaza next to the HB Pier on

Thursday December 3rd, 2009,, which

sees around 1 million people walk on

and under it each year.

For those who have visited and

taken photos before, the new look will

surprise you and youll feel like this is it.

Its exactly what the pier should be with

four new buildings to match the motif

and themes seen in Rubys Diner at the

end of the pier.

The public was invited to attend this

event which showcased the team that put

the project together, and the public

partnerships that were essential in making

it all come about.

ChrisMacDonaldOn the road in Surf City

The county region of Sunset

Beach, a one mile stretch of

coastline in north Orange County

between Seal Beach and Huntington

Beach, seeks help in forming its own

city so that it can keep its old-fashioned

charm, its name, and its independent

ways. This is a town where volunteer

firemen fight fires in the citywhere the

towns biggest fundraisers such as the

Firemans Ball this weekend helps to

support their local firefighting heroes,

and where annual picnics and parades

are traditions.

When the County of Orange

recently announced that the

unincorporated town of Sunset Beach

would be removed from County services

and placed in a sphere of influence of

Huntington Beach, many townsfolk in

the Sunset Beach Community

Association were really upset. This not

the kind of place we want to become,

said Pat Thies, who hopes that Sunset

Beach can raise enough money to

become Orange Countys 35th city.

Huntington Beach just celebrated

its 100th birthday in 2009, but Sunset

Beach has been around even longer,

celebrating 100 years

in 2004.

This is not your father's recession, nor yourgrandmother's depression. In size, scope and

duration, this economic downturn is different.And off-the-shelf solutions will not suffice.

President Barack Obama has undoubtedly been

hearing from businessmen, labor leaders andeconomists on how to reverse America's record high

unemployment. Pedestrian proposals are inevitable. Buttruly innovative

ideas that can be

i m p l e m e n t e dimmediately are

what Americanreally needs.

From myperspective, only a

strong, stable

m a n u f a c t u r i n gsector can rebuild

our economy andcreate jobs. But I'm

biased. Machinist

Union membersbuild the ships,

planes, rockets andmachinery that

power our exportsand defend our

nation. Machinists

like to make things. Millions of unemployed andunderemployed Americans do, too. The White House

should aim to stimulate that we-can-make-it-here spirit.With that goal in mind, here's an innovative idea

President Obama should consider: Hire the unemployed

to renovate and reinvigorate America's industrialinfrastructure.

Among the 31 million Americans idled to somedegree in this recession, the talent pool is deep and

deeply experienced. Almost 3.4 million were laid offfrom production, installation and construction jobs.

Their skills could be put to work rehabilitating our aging

factories and installing new machinery.Another 5.3 million jobless Americans are college

educated, highly skilled, and heavy on expertise. Over2.6 million come from management and professional

ranks. Another 2.7 million once worked in the service

sector. If you drill down into the Bureau of LaborStatistics' numbers, their expertise becomes obvious.

Their talents can create the strategic business, financingand marketing plans for revving up our factories.

America needs both brawn and brains to rebuildour manufacturing capacity, end this recession, and

ignite a new era of prosperity.

A sustained economic recovery requires us toreassert our global leadership as the producer of

innovative, high quality products. To make that happen,

however, our

with a lasting value tothe nation. It spent 85

percent of its funds on

payroll and 15 percenton materials. Some

projects demandedbrawn. Others relied

on brain power. But

all were rooted inlocal initiative and

accountability.A new WPAcan

be rolled out quickly.Americans can be put

to work renovating

factories, installing state-of-the-art equipment andupdating plans for small to medium-sized businesses.

Local communities can use federal dollars to hire theunemployed. Local businesses can get a second chance

to go global.

But let's not stop there. Public funds are beingspent to help private enterprises. Anew social contract

can be written, one that aligns corporate responsibilitywith community values, one that requires recipients to

meet environmental and labor standards, one thatrequires a long-term commitment to making it in

America. To sweeten the deal, investment tax credits

can help underwrite renovation costs and purchases ofnew equipment or processes.

As Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernankeobserved in 2007, this country "needs machines and

new factories and new buildings and so forth in order

for us to have a strong and growing economy." To me,the "so forth" is that we-can-make-it spirit. And right

now, that spirit could use a huge shot of adrenaline.President Obama could deliver that boost simply

by adding three words to his campaign slogan. "Yes,we can make it here" sounds like a clarion call to

action.

In a move headed for the Irony Hall of Fame,No. 2 tobacco marketer Reynolds American(RAI), parent of R.J. Reynolds, announced

recently that it's buying Niconovum, a Swedishmarketer of smoking-cessation products, for $44million.

It's a sea change from recent decades, whentobacco companies inclduding Reynolds, based inWinston-Salem, North Carolina, denied thatnicotine was even addictive. "Niconovum'sproducts have great potential in meeting consumerdemand and public health objectives," Reynolds

American's chairman-president-CEO Susan M.Ivey said in a statement. "This acquisition extendsthe harm-reduction strategies RAI and its operatingcompanies have been developing over the pastseveral years."

Despite there being many dimensions of

food for which conservatives and liberals

skew in different directions, there is alsoplenty of common ground. The following are

some of the cases where conservatives andliberals shared the same #1 answer (even if

there is still some skewing towards one groupor the other in many cases):

Romaine is everyone's favorite

type of lettuce. (top choice of 42% of

conservatives/ 37% of liberals) Both groups prefer salt on their margarita glass.

(44% of conservatives, 49% of liberals)

There's practically no difference in how bothgroups describe their cooking skill. Most people

(41%) say "There are a few things I can cook well",the 3rd lowest skill set listed on a 4-point scale.

Forced to choose "delicious or

disgusting", most people say thebacon double cheeseburger is

indeed delicious (66% ofconservatives, 54% of liberals)

Hold the sprinkles on our icecream, please (say 73% of

conservatives and 68% of

liberals). Both groups tip about the

same in restaurants. 46% ofboth groups consider

themselves "average tippers" and

about 44% consider themselves"generous tippers".

More than 70% of both groups prefer

their sandwich cut diagonally rather thanvertically. Still, conservatives are 18%more likely than liberals to prefer the vertical

approach.

About 68% of both groups prefers "traditionalcorks" in their wine. But liberals are still more

likely to prefer plastic corks or screw-on caps. About 61% of both groups say they care for

their kitchen tools by "just washing them well",

although 13% of conservatives (vs. 10% ofliberals) say they "care for them like a child".

Who doesn't like a good hot dog? 74% ofliberals and 83% of conservatives enjoy them.

About 43% of both liberals and conservatives"grow something indoors or outdoors that

they also eat".

Christmas is right around the corner, and while

this isnt a traditional Christmas column, its got

a few suggestions for doing some things that just

might make you feel like youve got the SPIRIT.

If you havent already done so, pick up tickets for the

final days of the Cruise of Lights. This annual boat ride

around the lovely

decorated homes of

Huntington Harbour, is

perfect for families,

group outings and even

date night. The event

runs through December

23rd with several

departure times each

evening. For more info

benefit the Huntington

Harbour Philharmonic and help keep music programs in

our schools. Oh, and dress like youre going to the North

Pole or youll be sorry when, and if, you thaw.

If youd like to celebrate the season by doing

something good for someone else and really, isnt that

the point? there are lots of options right here in Surf

City. Im especially impressed by the current food drive

taking place at Malibu Fish Grill.

Lots of businesses conduct food drives this time of

year, but the good folks at Malibu Fish Grill are doing

something I havent seen before; theyre giving donors

something in return. Bring in as little as one can of food

and youll get something tasty right off the menu!

On Mondays its a free taco, on Tuesdays a free

beverage. Donate on Wednesday and youll get 20% off

whatever you order, while Thursdays donors get free

appetizers and a complimentary kids meal is the give

back on Fridays. I went to lunch with a friend of mine

last Thursday and he received two big, yummy crab

cakes in exchange for the items he brought.

Its wonderful enough when any business puts out

a barrel and collects food for Orange Countys

surprisingly large number of people at risk, but this is

really something special especially in this economy.

Malibu Fish Grill is located at 17965 Beach Blvd. at

home team, so to speak? If

youve spent any time at all at the Central Library,

especially if youve staged an event or meeting there, you

have undoubtedly met Mark Alvarado. Mark has worked

for the city for 20 years. I met him when I was staging the

first Huntington Beach Follies in the brand new theater.

Mark was my go-to guy for everything. He was never too

busy to answer one of my dumb questions or to lend a hand.

What I didnt know is that Mark is an

exceptionally talented artist. Recently, however, he

submitted a piece to Comics Buyers Guides Cover Us

Contest and his is one of five finalists! This is

Marks first major piece of artwork in fourteen years

and its pretty fantastic.

He needs votes, though, and thats where you

come in. If youd just take a moment and visit their

Our trip to Europe in Sept. was tied around two main events, awedding at a castle in France and a River Cruise up the Rhineto Amsterdam.

My husband Dougand I left from L.A.X.and arrived in Paris.We then took a train toPoitiers, France whichis near the villagewhere the weddingwas. Our French friendwas married atChateau De Tennessus,a 13th century castle,in the country town ofAmailloux. Thehighlight of thewedding was staying

in the knights roomcoupled with a verybeautiful ceremony.

After all thewedding activities, weboarded a train back toParis, and then a trainon to Zurich,Switzerland.Our rivercruise started inBasel. We were part ofa charter, only 90 of us aboard the MS Avalon Creativity. The group wewere with was the N.C. Bar Association, and Alaska beer cruiser.

Our ports of call were Strasbourg, France, Heidelberg, Germany,Mainz, Rudesheim, Coblenz, Cologne, and Amsterdam, Holland.

Highlights: The canal tour of Strasbourg, going throughthe locks, and a beautiful cathedral. The cute town of Speyer,where we saw Palm trees, in Heidelberg, the castle on top ofthe hill, with a really neat wine cellar in the basement. In

Mainz we did a tourof the GutenbergMuseum and had ademonstration ofprinting a page ofthe bible on the firstprinting press. Wehad a really funwine tasting inRudesheim wherewe took pictures ofthe group with The

Local News. Wehad a emergencydrill on theCreativity wherewe learned the river

is so shallowthat just being

on the top deck isgood enough because it will be above water. In Colgne we hada walking tour of ruins and Colgne store and then a brewerytour. Our leader Michael from Magic Happens travel is with usin the picture, at a very good micro brewery. We finished the

tour in Amsterdam where we had a beer tasting at Arendsnest anexcellent brewery.

In 1977 when I graduated from High School at Mater Dei, I visit-ed the East Coast as my graduation present from my parents.While I sat there eating at the only Mexican Restaurant in Boston

located at Harvard Square, I decided that someday I wanted to own arestaurant, not necessarily a Mexican one just a restau-rant.

Dreams do come true. I quit a perfectly good Joband bought my first restaurant in Huntington Beach,called Linos in 2003, only 26 years later. The cus-tomers were great, and the employees were as well.While on vacation with my cousin Frank and his fami-ly in 2004, we sat around thecampfire dreaming of opening arestaurant big enough to supportboth of our families.

In 2005, we found the oldShed for sale on 5th Streetalso in Huntington Beach, whatwas to become our ownLuggattis Italian Grill. We did not have a large enough budget tohire consultants, so Frank and I designed the restaurant ourselves.We created the restaurant with the HB Locals in mind. We knew thatwithout the support of the people that live in downtown HB, we wouldbe forced to rely on tourism or the younger drinking crowd as do some

businesses on Main Street.We built out the restaurant, trained the staff, designed a large

wine list, developed a large flexible menu, and opened our doors inNovember, 2005.

We were blessed as our restaurant opened busy, andstayed that way. During our peak, we served more than8500 customers a month. Our goal was to serve greatfood, with great wine, and give great service at reason-able prices. You continued to come.

We saw the same great guests, week in and week out.We knew your names, your favorite drinks and meals, we

even knew the names of yourchildren. We became friendswith you. If Frank or I did notknow you, our Manager, theone and only Tina probably did.You made owning a restaurant atrue blessing. Our lives weretouched by you, and for that we

would like to thank you. Frank, Tina, Sal, Nikki, myself and ourentire staff thank you for allowing us to be part of your life, routine,part of your lives, part of your community, and for the privilege ofserving all of you these past four years. In Amsterdam we stayed at the GrandHotel, walking distance of all the sites

including the Red-light district. We reallyenjoyed the Heineken Tour where they hadlots of displays and taught you how to pourbeer. Also went to Anne Franks house, VanGogh museum and a night tour of the canals.The city is amazing, and people veryfriendly and they spoke very good English.Was fun to watch the people on the bicycles,which is the main transportation. whales? How

effective is the International Whaling

Some larger whale species have been

recovering since the dark days before the

whaling industry was regulated, but the

majority of cetaceansthat is, the distinct

order of marine mammals consisting of

whales, dolphins and porpoisesare in

decline, with some likely headed for

extinction in the near term.

According to data collected by the

International Union for the Conservation of

Nature (IUCN), which maintains a Red

List of threatened or endangered species,two of the largest whale species,

humpbacks and southern rights, have

rebounded since 1982 when the

International Whaling Commission (IWC)

imposed a moratorium on commercial whaling. Based

on IUCNs 2008 survey of cetaceans, both species,

while still threatened, were upgraded from

Vulnerable to Least Concern status on the Red List.

Humpbacks and southern right whales are making a

comeback in much of their range mainly because they

have been protected from commercial hunting, says

Randall Reeves, IUCNs assessment leader. This is a

great conservation success and clearly shows what

needs to be done to ensure these ocean giants survive.

But other cetaceans havent fared so well. Almost

a third of the worlds 80-plus cetacean species had their

Red List status changed based on the IUCNs 2008

assessment, with the vast majority now considered at

greater risk than before. Overall, nearly a quarter of

cetacean species are considered threatened, and of

those, more than 10 percent (nine species) are listed as

Endangered or Critically Endangered, the highest

categories of threat. Reeves says that the real situation

could be much worse, as researchers could not obtain

enough data on more than half of the world's cetacean

species to properly classify their status.

While commercial whaling is what first put

cetaceans at riskthe IWCs 1982 moratorium greatly

reduced stress on many speciesother threats loom

larger than ever: Whales the world over withstand ship

strikes, habitat deterioration and declining prey. And the

smaller cetaceans (dolphins, porpoises and small

whales) often drown in huge fishing nets that trawl the

ocean scooping up everything in their path.

And of course commercial whaling still goes on

despite the moratorium. Norway, Even with its IWC

membership, disregards the moratorium and resumed

commercial whaling in 1994. Iceland, which initially

withdrew from the IWC over the moratorium, began

commercial whaling again in 2006. Japan claims to

hunt whales for scientific research

purposesbut critics say this is just a

front to obtain and sell whale meat under

the false pretense of species counts.

Whalers from several nations, including

the U.S., hunt limited amounts of

cetaceans for subsistence purposes, but

these numbers are very small.

The IWC is a voluntary

organization not backed up by any

treaty, so its ability to regulate whaling

is limited. Perhaps the biggest factor in

nations willingness to honor the

moratorium is the court of public

opinion; awareness of the plight of

ceta
