INTRODUCING OUR JUDGES

SYLVIE MIRON, LRCC National Specialty Judge

I have been involved in Labrador breeding since 1983. My first lab was a big black male called Marquis. I worked with him in obedience, obtaining several High in Trials, one at 8 months old with his CD title. At 2 he was already OTCH. AM CAN CH Boothgate Chief Producer CD WC was a dream come true. I imported him from England in 1997. He made quite an impact in the breed not only in the chocolate pedigrees, but overall, producing multiple champions. Being president of the Club du Labrador du Québec (CLQ) for several years brought me closer to other Labrador lovers to how quality breeding counts. Breeding, showing and judging Labs is and will always be my passion in life.

MADELEINE CHAREST, LRCA Regional Specialty Judge

I graduated in Education and in Social Work at Laval University , Quebec . I am now retired from teaching Elementary School. I really enjoy my life with dogs, gardening, flowering and baby sitting ... I am married with Jean-Louis Blais. We have three children and seven grandchildren.....I really missed them during the pandemic. Since 1979, with Jean-Louis, we have bred Labradors under Chablais affix. Breeding , working and showing Labradors has been a very successful and interesting adventure. Over the years, I can remember so many wonderful Labradors and so prestigious wins . Myrtille is our “once in a life time“ female, winning so many Specialties , including Canadian and American Nationals. John Kaffé, Casey and Joss went all three Best of Breed at LRC of Potomac. Now, at home , we enjoy top winning BISS Am.& Can. Champions like our lovely Herve, Chou à la Crème, Ébène, Lily, Mon Petit Chou, Cyril and their gets and progeny. I judged Matches and Sweepstakes many times in Canada and in USA. Now, I am on permit for Labradors. Time

goes by. I am really looking forward to judging your promising puppies, veterans and to meeting all of you.

VALERIE WALTERS, LRCC Regional Specialty Judge

I have been involved with Labrador Retrievers since 1974. We purchased our first yellow female as a family member. Only weeks after we brought her home we met a couple with an English Setter at our local corner store, we started chatting and they suggested that we come to one of their local Kennel Club meetings and possibly join. With their guidance we attended our first Sanction match and we were hooked. That same year we registered our Kennel name Labradale with the CKC. Unfortunately, Kim, our first Lab was not impressed with the dog show scene, and she became a happy couch potato, and enjoyed walks and swimming at the back of our property. Our next Labrador came from Sally McCarthy of Shamrock Acres Kennels; he was a handsome yellow boy, but due to an injury, we were not able to show him and he was placed in a family home. We then purchase a yellow bitch from Jeanne Young of Balmoral Kennels in the USA. This was a great experience for me, she became Am.Can.Bda.Ch.

Labradale’s Jill of Balmoral. She was shown in Bermuda by our good friend Barbara Partridge who was a handler. She was later bred to Ch. Briary Brendan of Rainell owned by Lorraine Getter and for her second litter she was bred to Ch. Briary Breakthru which produced Champions. It was Lorraine Getter who introduced me to the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac in 1976. This was an eye opener for me, I couldn’t have imagined so many beautiful Labradors in one place. I met so many wonderful people and still have long time friendships. I never thought that I would have a Labrador good enough to compete at the LRCP Specialty. In 1989 I showed “Jill” (BISS Am.Can.Ch. Shadowvale’s Jill at Ranbourne); she was awarded WB and BOW under Dot Gartner and Joan McCann, I can’t tell you what an honor that was for me. In 1980 my husband and I separated and I transferred our Kennel name Labradale over to him. In 1982 I registered my new Kennel name Ranbourne with the CKC. I acquired my foundation bitch from Mike & Huguette Beattie (Shadowvale). She became BISS Am.Can.Ch. Shadowvale’s Jill at Ranbourne. She was bred to Am.Can.Bda.Ch. Bradking Rangeways Mr Chips who produced BISS Can.Ch. Ranbourne This Bud’s for You, who has produced Champions in Canada and the US. Bud was awarded BOS in Sweepstakes at the LRCP under Sally Bell. Bud and his litter sister Beanie gave me so much joy and lived until the ripe old age of 151/2 years. This has been a 40+ year journey for me, there have been good times and some not so good, but I would do it all over again. I have made 40 year friendships with folks that I would be proud to call family. I have finished dogs in Canada and in the US. I have attended several specialties over the years and had to cut down at one point, but still kept my feet in the Dog World and enjoyed showing dogs for my Labrador friends. I knew that I probably would never be a big breeder but I am proud of the dogs that I had. In 2004 I decided to apply for my Judge’s License which gave me the opportunity to judge the Breed that I love and also a way to give back to what gave me such wonderful memories. I later applied to judge Golden Retrievers. A special boy to remember is A.J. (Black) aka OTCH. Nycoma Way Design For Ranbourne, Am.UD,WC,CGC (Am.Ch. Ghoststone Hyspire Dressed to Impress x Nycoma Way Sweet Pea, JH) bred by heather Johnson (Nycoma Way). A.J. passed away a few years ago at the age of 13. Time (yellow) aka Can.Ch. Belgairn Time in a Bottle at Ranbourne, Am.Can.CDX (Ch. Blackwing Superfine x Ch. Belgairn Shadowbrook Dream Time) who is 12 years old and bred by the Kelly & Silva families (Belgairn & Shadowbrook). Howie (Black) 8 years old, Ranbourne The Beat Goes On, Am.Can.CD, training in Open & Utility (Can.Ch. Chablais Victoris, WC x GCh. Laurglen Ardent Rogue at Hyspire). We were fortunate to acquire a puppy from heather Johnson (Nycoma Way) during COVID, a black boy Nycoma Way Due North to Ranbourne (GCHB.Ch. Lakeside memoir of Gallivant, CGC, TKN x Nycoma Way Dragonfly on My Shoulder), looking forward to getting him out to some shows. I am a Lifetime Member of the CKC, the Chateauguay Valley all-Breed/Obedience Club, the Labrador Retriever Club of Canada and le Club du Labrador du Quebec. I am also a member of the Canadian Dog Judges Association and the St. Lawrence Region Dog Judge’s Association. I love ring stewarding both in Conformation and Obedience. It’s always an honor and a privilege to be invited to judge a Specialty and I look forward to seeing some beautiful Labradors today.

MARGARET CHANDLER, LRCA Specialty Obedience & Rally Judge

Margaret is actively involved in all levels of dog training with her own dogs, which have included German Shepherds, Newfoundlands and currently Belgian Tervurens. She has put advanced titles on her dogs in Obedience, Rally, Tracking, Scent Hurdling, Barn Hunt, Nosework, Draft and Water Rescue in Canada and some in the USA. In addition, she has enjoyed doing Agility and Herding with her Tervs. Margaret taught Obedience and Rally All Breed Classes for many years for the Great Dane Club of British Columbia. She has chaired or stewarded for working committees in both countries. She likes helping dogs work towards achieving their potential in activities for which they were bred. Since the '90s Margaret has judged Obedience and Rally for CKC, Draft Tests for CKC and Water Tests for the Newfoundland Dog Club of Canada. She also judges Obedience and Rally for two other Registries as well.

Margaret wishes all exhibitors good luck and hopes they have a most enjoyable weekend with their best friend, their dog.

LINDA WYATT-DEGROOT, LRCC National Specialty Sweepstakes Judge

Staghorn was CKC registered in 1996, named for a type of Sumac bush that my dad always said were like Labs, as they looked their best in the Fall. I have no idea how many Can Ch and GCh we have produced here over the years. Two also went on to get their AmCh’s as well. Whenever possible, I also love showing stateside and have attended Potomac regularly for many years as well as many specialties in the northeast. I belong to Iroquois LRC in upstate NY as their token Canadian. I’m the President of the Eastern Ontario Labrador Breeders Association and a member of LOC and a Life Member of LRCC. I have judged Sweepstakes at several Canadian Regional specialties and at one ILRC in NY State. I am honoured to be judging Sweeps at our National this year, thank you for inviting me. Whether CH, GCH, just fooling around with some obedience, or simply enjoying our groomed trails and swims in our seasonal creek, my Labs have all been Champions of my heart. I’ve met so many wonderful friends along the way, in Canada and the US. These friendships are golden. Friends from the clubs come to mean so much to us, like family.

This was especially evident last summer when I lost my daughter. The support I received from Breeders all over the world showed me that the Labrador Community is really a family all of its own and one I am proud to be part of. I look forward to seeing our friends and their lovely dogs.

HENRY MORIN, LRCA Specialty Sweepstakes Judge

I have been breeding and showing Labradors along with my wife Janice for the past 18 years under the prefix Madabout Labs. We’ve had a successful career in the Conformation ring winning over 14 Best in Shows on multiple dogs, 10 Best in Specialty wins along with numerous Best Veteran in Specialty, Best Puppy in Show, Best Puppy in Specialty, and Reserve Best in Shows. To date we are the only kennel in Canada to have a GCh in all three colours! Along with our many wins I have piloted dogs to #1 in Canada status several times. Retired for many years I enjoy training dogs for the ring, showing, travelling and working around the yard.

I wish to thank everyone for the opportunity to judge Sweeps at the Specialty and wish the Best of Luck to all the exhibitors!
