Youth Shabbat is an annual event that enables our children to lead davening and layning and deliver divrei Torah in the main sanctuary of The Jewish Center. Angry Young Man Rabbi Ari Lamm, Resident Scholar

Just after his final audience with Pharaoh before the

plague of the firstborn, the Torah reports on Moshe's

emotional state. Said Moshe to Pharaoh:

"And all these your servants shall come down to me,

and bow down to me, saying: Get out, and all the

people that follow you; and after that I will go out.'

And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger" (Exodus

11.8).

This bit of the Exodus narrative seems simple enough.

Having encountered again and again Pharaoh's

base tyranny, Moshe finally gave up trying to con-

vince his powerful antagonist, instead allowing him-

self to feel annoyed with Pharaoh's behavior. In his

commentary on the Torah, however, Rashi offers a

rather cryptic note on this verse. Namely, Rashi

writes, "'[Moshe left Pharaoh's presence] in hot an-

ger,' that is on account of [Pharaoh's] proclaiming [to

Moshe], 'Do not see my face anymore' (Exodus

10.28)." That is, in detailing Moshe's anger after his

meeting with Pharaoh, Rashi claims that Moshe's

wrath was provoked not by Pharaoh's intransigence

in the face of God's destruction of Egyptian society

(the immediate context in chapter 11), but rather by

Pharaoh's humiliating, disrespectful dismissal of

Moshe and by extension God Himself (all the way

back in chapter 10). What purpose could Rashi have

in arguing for this counterintuitive reading of our

verse?

In his super commentary to Rashi called Divrei Da-

vid, Rabbi David Ha-Levi Segal (16th century) prof-

fers the following explanation:

"Rashi appears to have explained [Moshe's anger in

our verse, Exodus 11.8] via reference to an earlier

verse [i.e. Exodus 10.28, namely, Pharaoh's dismissal

of Moshe] in order to make the point that even

though Pharaoh insulted Moshe prior to their present

conversation [that is, all the way back in chapter 10],

Moshe did not allow himself to take offense until

now. Indeed, this must be the case, for after all

Moshe received the word of God, through prophecy,

even after [Pharaoh's insult], and God's Presence

does not descend on a person who is angry. It must

be, therefore, that Moshe held his anger in check

until after he had finished speaking with Pharaoh."

In other words, suggests Divrei David, Moshe's ability

to speak out against Pharaoh's injustices depended

on his relationship with the Almighty. Had Moshe al-

lowed anger - however justifiable - to seize hold of

him, that relationship would have been compromised.

Indeed, Rambam famously exhorts his readers to go

to extreme lengths to avoid anger (see Hilkhot

De'ot 2.6). And it was precisely at this crucial mo-

ment in time - when God's and the Israelites' contest

with Pharaoh was coming to a head - that Moshe

could ill afford to lose access to God and Godly

values.
