The happy coincidence of Parashat Tazria with Parashat Ha-Chodesh allows for a brief reflection on the relationship between two cardinal mitzvot: korban pesah and brit milah. The third verse of Tazria commands circumcision, under normal circumstances, on the eighth day of life, even if it is Shabbat. The central motif of Para-shat Ha-Chodesh is the korban pesah, which must also be offered on Shabbat if the fourteenth of Nissan falls on Shabbat.

The relationship, however, goes much deeper than superseding Shabbat. These are the only two positive commandments which are associ-ated with the penalty of karet, typically reserved for only the gravest of prohibitions. Moreover, the Torah explicitly links both of these commandments by ruling that the korban pesah cannot be con-sumed by anyone who is uncircumcised. The very obvious fact that both of these mitzvot are blood rituals deepens this connection. The Mechilta, in a stirring passage, understands that the verse in Yechezkel, recited at the Seder, ואעבר עליך ואראך ,I passed over you מתבוססת בדמיך ואמר לך בדמיך חיי and I saw you wallowing in your blood, and I said to you, even in your blood, you shall live,’ refers to the blood of pesah, and the blood of milah, through which the Jewish people merited redemp-tion.

Yet, for all of these highly suggestive connections, there remains a striking distinction between korban pesah and brit milah. Circumci-sion, by its very nature, is private. It involves the most intimate part of the male anatomy, and, ha-lakhically speaking, it can be performed in com-plete seclusion.

Korban pesach, by contrast, is communal

in every sense of the term. It is eaten in the con-text of a chaburah, a grouping. The slaughtering and roasting of the korban pesah created a public scene through the streets of Jerusalem vividly por-trayed in rabbinic literature. It is certainly not a mere anecdote that the halachic source of agency is derived from the verses commanding slaughter-ing the korban pesah; the halachic instrument of agency is the logical conclusion of a communal mitzvah par excellence. The very term used to describe the slaughtering of korban pesah by the Torah קהל עדת ישראל is the most full-throated term used anymore in the Torah to connote the national status of the Jewish people. Thus, milah and pesah appear to be as distinct as they are related.

Perhaps we may resolve this tension by suggesting that milah and pesah are really paral-lel institutions, but which exist on different planes. In a word, milah is to the individual what pesah is to the collective, the tzibbur. A Jew, apparently, must identify at two levels; first, he must commit as an individual to the covenant of Abraham, to pas-sionate service of Almighty God, replete with con-sistent acts of self-sacrifice.

The commitment of the individual to God, while necessary, is insufficient. The individual must also commit himself to community. The Jew always relates to God on two parallel planes, as individu-al, and then, as member of the faith community. Every personal amidah is followed, immediately, by the communal prayer, the tefillat ha-tzibbur.

With the Exodus, the Jew became party to both of these covenants simultaneously. In your blood, you will yet live- through the blood of mi-lah, and the blood of pesah, as an individual, and as a member of the faith community.
