In Memory of Shimon Peres Parshat Nitzavim 5776

Rabbi Dovid Zirkind, Associate Rabbi

Wendesday morning was a wonderful morning at The JC, as a full minyan packed our downstairs classroom to celebrate the completion of Mesechet Bava Kamma. How-ever, Wednesday was also a bitter day for the Jewish people as we lost one Israel's founding political fathers in Shimon Peres. There was a small piece of me that could not help but connect these two experiences, as Bava Metzia which we began this week represents the bridge between two Mesech-tot (Bava Kamma and Bava Metziah) and Shimon Peres represented the bridge be-tween the past and future of Jewish Lead-ership. We teach our children Bava kamma and Bava Metzia very early on; you probably remember the Mishnayot of Eilu Metziut from childhood still today. Maybe you re-call an ox that gored a cow, or a two men playing tug-of-war, each one says “the Tal-lit belongs to me”. We do so because the methodology is fertile ground for kids to develop Gemara skills, but also because the ethics that underscore Choshen Mishpat are foundational to bein adam l’chaveiro. Our kids understand what possession is from the age they have their own toys and they understand private vs. public domains from the age they start asking for their own room. We introduce them to Gemara not with abstract theology or spirituality but with a sense of respect and accountability for how they interact with others. It is more

than Mishnayot about cows and pits, but about obligation, responsibility, thoughtful-ness and safety. Whether Shimon Peres was religious or not, too far to the left or right, are irrelevant to his legacy at this moment. He was a Shomer Yisrael dedicated to the well-being of Jews everywhere and the future of the state of Israel. To celebrate his legacy is to further remind ourselves of the most basic elements of what it means to be a Jew; to protect one another, to represent one another and to make a kiddush hashem with every per-son we meet. Parshat Netzavim is replete with a con-sistent message; Moshe Rabbeinu tells the Jewish people that when Israel is desolate and abandoned the world will know that it is so because we have abandoned our cov-enant with Hashem. If so, what do we make of our time? If the land is rich with produce, if the country is full of creativity and kind-ness, than our covenant with Hashem must be quite strong indeed. “For me,” Peres once said, “dreaming is simply being pragmatic.” As we enter Rosh Hashanah, the legacy of Shimon Peres should be a call to action for each of us. May we dream big dreams for the future of Israel and may we do everything in our power to make those dreams a reality.
