The HERALD St. John Lutheran Church Volume 112, Issue 7 “Growing Community in Christ” September 2012 From the Pastor: I just wanted to take a moment to share with this com- munity of faith an update in our call process. As many of you know, we did not have a congregational meeting on Sunday, August 12. The candidate we were hoping to call accepted a different position. The vision committee, church council, and call commit- tee worked alongside the Eastern North Dakota synod staff to create a position between St. John Lutheran and the University Lutheran Center at NDSU. St. John and the University Lutheran Center were excited about this possible shared call and worked together to put two job descriptions together that would support and enhance both ministries. Once again, St. John is in conversation with the synod with the same possible future partnership. As intriguing as that call could have been, we recognize that God may provide a candidate who only wants a part time position, in which case St. John would be open to such a call. As your pastor, I can’t thank enough those who were involved in the many conversations that have led us to this point today. I am truly excited to see St. John staffed for the growth needed to continue to see our ministries flourish and grow through the grace and love of Christ. I invite you to pray daily for your congregation as we con- tinue together in faith and ask God to supply two new staff members for the positions of an Associate Pastor and our Finance Director. On the ministry side, your ministry staff has been meeting to plan a wonderful fall experience. We have been meeting and praying for all the ways that you will be impacted by God’s grace this fall through all the programs that we offer. We have also been praying for our lay leaders as we start putting in place dozens and dozens of volunteers who will lead these various ministries. I am so excited for all the ways we will grow in faith this fall. Soon we will grow in faith with new staff members, but we will also grow in faith together through all our small group ministries. So, may God challenge you to serve in a way you have never served before and may God challenge you to join a small group to grow closer to your neighbor. May all of us reach out to our communities to offer them a word of mercy and acceptance. The HERALD

St . John Lutheran Church

Volume 112, Issue 7 “Growing Community in Christ” September 2012

From the Pastor: I just wanted to take a moment to share with this com-munity of faith an update in our call process. As many of you know, we did not have a congregational meeting on Sunday, August 12. The candidate we were hoping to call accepted a different position.

The vision committee, church council, and call commit-tee worked alongside the Eastern North Dakota synod staff to create a position between St.

As your pastor, I can’t thank enough those who were involved in the many conversations that have led us to

this point today. I am truly excited to see St. John staffed for the growth needed to continue to see our ministries flourish and grow through the grace and love of Christ. I invite you to pray daily for your congregation as we con-tinue together in faith and ask God to supply two new staff members for the positions of an Associate Pastor and our Finance Director.

In Christ’s love, Pastor Nathan Keith

PARISH HEALTH MINISTRY!

Healthy Feet Are "Happy Feet" Christ washed the feet of his disciples and instructed us to follow his example. Our Foot Care Clinic provides foot care performed by volunteers and trained health personnel. It is particularly helpful to those with foot health issues. It's also a social time to visit with friends and enjoy a cup of coffee. Next clinic is Tuesday, Sept. 18. Call Cathy Chatelain at 293-6772 or 261-2707 to schedule an appointment. Cost is $16 paid to Sanford Home Health Care-Fargo. Donations are appreciated and go to support this ministry.

For the "Young At Heart", join us for coffee and refresh-ments on Thurs. Sept. 13 at 10 am in the parlor. We want to share Christian fellowship, conversation, and activi-ties. All are welcome. Contact Marlene Ames, 235-0241, or Cathy Chatelain, 261-2707, if you have questions. Other-wise just come and join the fun.

St. John Nursery- Providing a supervised nursery for young children during Sunday services is an important need for young parents. Is there a member who would be inter-ested in coordinating this ministry of our church? Contact the office, 232-8521 or Cathy Chatelain, 261-2707.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER ORIENTATION, Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m.

RALLY SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9! Come and kick off a new year with us! Meet in the sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. for Large Group opening, followed by time in your classrooms to meet your teacher and classmates, and close with Rally Sundaes in the Fellowship Hall!

INVITE, ENGAGE, ACTIVATE! Invite, Engage, Activate! That’s the theme you’ll hear and see from us this year with Sunday School. We invite everyone to be a part of Sunday School, engage in God’s word, and activate faith to live out in daily life! We have a fantastic group of teach-ers who are excited to spend time with our children to help them learn about their faith. Please take time to introduce yourselves to them and other families you meet.

You’ll also find some fun changes this year to our Sunday School! We’ve painted and freshened up our learning space. Our Milestone Ministry will be interwoven with our Sunday School, so look to be invited, engaged and activated in your faith through that ministry!

Our 6th Grade will now be part of “hands & feet”, for 6-8 grade-meets in the youth room on Sunday mornings from 10-10:45.

If you’d like to be involved with Sunday School, there are vol-unteer opportunities for everyone. Contact our Leadership team with ways you’d like to be involved! Some special projects are helping with the bulletin boards, and being a Sunday School assistant.

All Board Night

On August 21, the Church Council voted to begin an All Board Night

at St. John. The first All Board night will be Tuesday, Oct. 2 beginning

with devotions at 6:30 pm. At 6:45 pm, all the boards will meet for an

hour to conduct their ministry. At 7:45 pm, the council liaisons and/or

the board chairperson will check in and share if there are any further

needs that need to be addressed. It is our hope that having a board night

will strengthen the vision and mission of St. John as we sit together to

work on the different goals for each board and area of ministry. If you

are a council liaison to a board or if you are a board chairperson, please

share this with your team as you meet this September. We will see all of

you on Oct 2nd starting at 6:30 pm. (Remember that this was a goal that

came out of the visioning process!)
