There aren’t many funerals these days thatwould drive shops on the high street to close for the occasion, but that of Hazel andBernard Fisher was one. Mr and Mrs Fisher, founders of Fishers hardware onSaxmundham marketplace, sadly diedwithin five days of one another last month.

They were a vital part of Saxmundham in itsheyday as a market town, not just asbusiness proprietors, but, in Bernard’s case,an active member of the Town and DistrictCouncil and, in Hazel’s case, a tirelesssupporter of the local church and charities. They will be remembered as funny, kind andgenerous members of the community.

Hazel Fisher was born in Norwich in 1923,Bernard in Redgrave in 1918. They metworking as juniors at the ironmongers inNorwich before being separated for fouryears by the second world war. BernardFisher was posted to Ceylon, Hazel Fisherjoined the WRAF and at just 18 had thedreadful job of sorting out the documents ofairmen killed in action.

During his posting, Bernard sent Hazel atelegram asking, ‘Will you marry me?’ By thetime the answer arrived, it apparently tookhim some time to remember what the ‘yes’referred to!

They were married on 15th December 1945within six weeks of Bernard’s return toEngland. In 1946 they set up shop and homein Saxmundham. It was a hard beginning -no electricity, flush toilet or running waterand little stock as all metals had been usedin the war. There were six kettles on oneshelf and six saucepans on another.

Hard work and resourcefulness helped themmake a success at home and in business.Like others in that time, Hazel Fisher madeall her children’s clothes and her reputationas a seamstress led to her being given workmaking alterations for the outfitters in thetown.

In later years, Bernard Fisher baked bread, grew vegetables and was a great supporter ofthe youth club in the town, while Hazelworked ‘At The Crossroads’.

They raised four children, John (currentChair of Saxmundham Town), Margaret,Mark and Gail, who joined the family as ateenager.

Last month I waspleased to welcomethe Energy Ministerto Suffolk as heofficially opened theGreater Gabbardwindfarm. Whilst hewas here he also tookthe opportunity to

visit Sizewell and met a wide range ofstakeholders, including residents, businesses and colleges, and had a veryquick tour of the proposed C site. In myfirst ever speech in the House ofCommons I said that Suffolk Coastalwas ready to take the lead in the low-carbon economy and that I hoped thatour coast will be able to take on the newalias of the "Green Coast” that isstarting to be realised.

I recently visited the Smile Café, a pop-up organisation that runs out of theFromus Centre in Saxmundham. It isrun by local resident Don Tricker wholeads the Pastel Community InterestGroup. The Café does fantastic work inproviding respite and refreshments tocarers as well as adults with disabilities. Thanks to Don and his team of cheerfulvolunteers and it was great to meetsome of the clients too.

During Parliamentary recess I was alsoable attend the splendid Aldeburghcarnival and the candlelight processionand fireworks that followed. It was thebest yet in my 4 years of representingSuffolk Coastal. Congratulations to theorganising team and the sponsors for agreat occasion.

Finally, congratulations to students andlocal schools on the GCSE & A levelresults published last month. I am sureyour hard work paid off. I hope allstudents got what they wanted but ifnot, schools and college are a goodsource of advice. As I always say at thistime of year apprenticeships are anexcellent earn as you learn route. Formore information log on towww.thesource.me.uk for details onSuffolk apprenticeships.

Elizabeth’s Yarns

Next time you go into Elizabeth’s inSaxmundham High Street, remember to say‘Happy Birthday’. The business is 60 yearsold this year having opened in the year ofQueen Elizabeth II’s coronation, 1953 - that’swhere the name comes from.

Karen Eidson bought Elizabeth’s in 2007after 12 years living and working inCalifornia. “I really enjoy having a businesswith such a long heritage,” she says. “Therearen’t many shops that have been open for solong serving the same specialist need.”

Although Karen was trained and had workedin the catering industry, she had alwaysloved knitting and crafts. When her sisterDeborah (co-proprietor of The Store, also onSaxmundham High Street) describedElizabeth’s and told her that it was for sale,it seemed too good an opportunity to miss. Itgave her the chance to work doing somethingshe loved, live in a beautiful part of England, and be closer to family (including her niece,Elizabeth).

In the last 12 months, Elizabeth’s hasexpanded its range to include fabricsalongside haberdashery, yarns and craftsmaterials. In addition to the shop, Karenhosts ‘knit and natter’, (every Thursday from2 to 4 – everyone’s welcome, ask in the shopfor details) and a range of craft classes, from‘learning to knit’, and ‘knitting socks fromthe toes up,’ to ‘hand quilting’.

Karen Eidson believes that sewing, knitting

and crafting are becoming ever morepopular. “TV programmes like Sewing Beehave encouraged people to have a go atsewing and dressmaking.

“There’s a real trend for speciality knits too.Shawls from lace-weight wool, for example, toys and fun things like our monkey [watchthe window] and the brilliant knittedcupcakes and sandwiches made by JoanneMorris, who works with me [and also has adaughter, Elizabeth!].

“Tough times financially mean that morepeople are mending or recycling what theyalready have. We get lots of holidaymakersin needing to fix an awning on their caravanor something on their boat.”

Here’s to the next 60 years, and many morehappy Elizabeths!

'If the first week of august be warm, thewinter be long and white'

As most of you pray that the sunshine lasts, from the farm's perspective all I get fromRobert is.... It's still not raining. How ironic! As predicted at Peakhill we are now feedingthe cows their winter silage & everyday theytell us, through a series of moos, that its notwhat they were expecting! Silage aside what'sbad for the livestock farm is good for thearable farmer and all around us the combinesare rolling & on every country lane you meeta tractor & trailer the size of house cartingtheir less than bounteous harvests back totheir grain stores. Our good friend Wendy isrunning around on a constant sandwichmaking spree for the guys working on a largefarm just outside Sax as they bring in theircereal harvest!

At the weekend we catered for our firstwedding with Peakhill's army field kitchenand lots of great Peakhill and Suffolk

produce. The wedding, and feed back on thefood (which we are calling 'foodback') wasvery positive and the wedding was a howlingsuccess. On 31 August we are supportingGreener Sax with the start of 30 mile foodchallenge which runs in September. Placesare free but booking is essential. We're alsohosting the MauiWaui music festival nextmonth & people keep asking if we are lookingforward to it. I can't wait but Rob, like anyhost, is slightly apprehensive. Progress with BoS

Dear Town Herald

The BoS summer social event held atBruisyard Hall on 27 July was deemed asuccess and will definitely be repeatednext year, but held on a Sunday ratherthan a Saturday enabling Saxmundhamretailers to join in the fun.

The plans for sprucing up our High Streethave swung into action as Charlotte Ford, from the Cotton Tree, reported. Twenty-five volunteers reported for duty onSaturday 10 August and painting of someof the retail premises will have alreadystarted by the time you read this.

With membership now well into the 70s,BoS continues to not only support localbusinesses but also looks to assist theTown Council and other interested bodiesto provide an attractive, vibranttown where local residents and touristsshop and spend their leisure time. If you,or someone you know, has a local businesswhy not join? See the websitewww.saxmundham.biz for moreinformation. Businesses joining before theend of the year can take advantage of a50% discount. It might be the best £15you’ve ever spent!

The next BoS meeting will be held in theWaitrose Cafe on Monday 16 September at7pm. All are welcome.
