The besTselling Kells Local Heroes pop – up fundraising bookshop has closed, following a month of old – world charm and incisiveness worthy of any classic novel. The shop proved a hub for social and commercial activity, evoking idealised memories of the marketplace environment for which Kells was once renowned as erudite enthusiasts from across Meath and beyond flocked to the new cultural centre based in the converted landmark establishment, Olohan’s of Cross St.

Jack Gillic, spokesperson for Kells Local Heroes said; “I believe that we are entitled to take pride in the success of this venture, as the notion of a philanthropic pop – up shop was totally without precedent in Kells, this remarkable record of innovative social entrepreneurship explains the tremendous goodwill demonstrated by our many supporters”.

“The bookshop was dependent upon local donations of books, of which over 7000 were received during the month of operation, our dedicated team of volunteers sold 5000 books, the surplus has been donated to various charities, including the elderly day care centre”.Kells Local Heroes shall repeat the initiative next year with new plans to establish a dedicated antiquarian section. Donations will be accepted throughout the coming months, contributors are asked to contact Avril Gillic or Geraldine Walsh.Meanwhile, part of the shops’ proceeds will be dedicated to completing the Carrick St phase of urban renewal as Kells Local Heroes intend to transform the former “Eats and Treats” complex this Saturday, 8th September. All those willing to participle in the project should assemble with equipment in the offices of Kells Chamber of Commerce at 9:00am.

Following on from the International Camp in Ireland in July 2012, a group of local girls from Navan Girl Guides hope to travel to England to experience camp as an International visitor next year. They will get the opportunity to share Irish Culture, Music, Dance and craic with Guides and Scouts from all over the world. From September until July next year they will be fund raising and working together to organise and plan for this exciting trip.

Back in July a group of ten girls from Navan Girl Guides travelled to Lough Key Forest Park in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, to begin what would be a week of excitement and adventure for them. They were joined by over 1,500 girls and Leaders at Irish Girl Guides CAMP 101, including Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from 15 different countries such as Taiwan, India, USA, Canada and South Africa. Great use was also made of Lough Key’s fabulous amenities such as the Boda Borg and Zip It, adding even more adventure and excitement to the week.

The girls also learned about giving back to their communities and visited the local nursing home in Boyle and painted a mural for the Community Hall in Boyle. Local Guide Anna, or Banana as she is nicknamed, exclaimed ‘it was such a great experience for any young person my age; to learn about different cultures and lifestyles around the world; from Indian dancing to singing at the closing ceremony; it was truly brilliant!’ This experience opened the Guides eyes to the international side of Guiding and planted the seed of broadening their horizons.

Guides take part in a host of great activities including outdoor survival skills, canoeing, night survival, drama, pioneering, orienteering and much

more. The Irish Girl Guides is the largest voluntary organisation dedicated to girls and young women in Ireland. We support 11,000 girls throughout Ireland by empowering them to achieve their fullest potential and become responsible, active citizens of the world.

Our strength lies in our innovative and non-formal education programmes, leadership development and community action, which supports girls and young women to develop the skills and confidence needed to enact positive change in their communities. For more information about the Irish Girl Guides check out our website www.irishgirlguides.ie or contact 01 668 3898.

Locally, Guides (which is for girls aged 10-15) starts back on Friday’s at the Scout Hall from Friday 14th September 7.00 – 8.30pm Any questions? please contact Anne Hyland 087 9660255 or e-mail: [email protected]

Over 500 People Pound Around Meath’s Girley Eco Bog To Raise Money For Action Breast Cancer

OVER 500 men and women took part in the fourth Kells Pink Ribbon Walk on Sunday, September 9th 2011. The participants ran and walked the sponsored 10 kilometre event in the picturesque surroundings of Drewstown House and Girley Eco Bog, near Kells, Co. Meath.KEY FACTS

The aim of the Pink Ribbon Walks is to raise funds for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society. TV Presenter and Fashion Stylist Barbara McMahon, who is an Ambassador for Pink Ribbon Walk, was on hand to help launch the Kells 10km event. Also in attendance was RTÉ News Anchor Bryan Dobson, who has served as the Ambassador for the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk since its inauguration in 2009. A sister Walk has taken place in Killaloe in June 2010, May 2011 and May 2012. A third event - the first Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk - took place in March 2012. Between them, the Kells, Killaloe and Kinsale Walks have raised €543,684 to date for Action Breast Cancer – funds that have been put towards scientific research programmes, a patient helpline, cancer literature and other support services.

The ultimate aim of the Pink Ribbon Walk committee is to have Pink Ribbon Walks taking place all over Ireland. A fourth new event is planned for 2013. Penny McGowan is the founder and chairperson of the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk, and her daughter, Sara McGowan, is a founding member of the Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk Committee. The Walk was the brainchild of a group of local Kells women, some of whom have survived breast cancer themselves. Breast cancer survivor Siobhan Reilly (34) from Dulane did media interviews to publicise the Kells Walk. Siobhan attended the Walk and participated along with a gang of friends.

Moynalty Cycling Club came on board this year and ran two Ladies Only Sportive Cycling Events and a Family Event on Saturday, September 8th – starting from Kells. There were great prizes on offer to encourage participants to ‘think pink’ and dress in fancy dress, with Barbara and Bryan on hand to judge the Best Dressed Team and Best Dressed Individual before the Event.

Participants were also treated to free food and musical entertainment, as well as being able to avail of a Pink Pamper Tent where over a dozen therapists were on hand to offer relaxing massages and other treatments after the event. The people, sporting clubs and businesses of Kells also rowed in behind the event and the heritage town was a sea of pink balloons, flags, ribbons, posters, t-shirts and painted logos on walls in the weeks leading up to September 9th.

Bryan Dobson concluded The Kells Pink Ribbon Walk with a moving speech and a poignant flag-raising ceremony that honoured those who have succumbed to, or are currently fighting, cancer. The closing ceremony also marked the unity, hope, spirit and solidarity of this unique day.

FUN FACTSThe 500 runners and walkers came from 11 counties nationwide. Entrants quenched their thirst with 1,000 free bottles of water during and after the event, as well as demolishing some 600 sandwiches, hot baked potatoes, Cadbury chocolate bars,Tayto crisps, oranges and apples, pink lemonade and tea and coffee after crossing the finish line! Participants wrote the name of the person or people who inspired them to take part in the Walk on pieces of pink ribbon, which were then hung on a clothesline – over 800 metres of pink ribbon were used.

The heritage town of Kells was decorated with 100 huge Pink Ribbon Walk flags, with bar and shop staff proudly wearing pink t-shirts and up to 800 pink balloons decorating the shop fronts and trees! The historic Spire of Lloyd was also lit up neon pink every night in the week running up to the Walk.

The Pink Party night at Arches Bar Kells was a huge success. On the night over a thousand euro was raised all to benefit the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk 2012 all organised by Lucy Dillon aged 21 from Grove Gardens & Open Farm.

This event attracted lots of both young and older ladies and gentlemen on the night. The event was proudly organised by Lucy as she always wanted to raise money for Cancer and she was delighted with the gathering along with the sea of pink clothing worn too. A big thanks to all of the local businesses around Kells, Athboy & Navan for sponsoring all of the great gifts for the raffle on the night and to RonanHardford “owner of Arches Bar” for organising the Karaoke and the food on the night.

A b ig thank you to the main sponsor Thai Orchid Resturant Navan for all of their generous donation of spot prizes. Lots of young people showed their great support for Lucy and her family as sadly her Mother recently passed away in August from the disease Cancer.

A huge thanks to everybody who took part on the night and to all thos brave boys who got waxed and shaved too.

Sunday SePTember 9th saw the start of the 4th Annual World Cup Event - Race Around Ireland in association with Meath Tourism, Meath County Council and Trim Town Council. This year the field of International and home riders will depart from the magnificent backdrop of Trim Castle.

Riders and crew from 7 countries will tackle what is considered to be one of the most gruelling cycling events in the world with Solo riders having to spend up to 22hours a day on the bike over the 2100km route as they pass through 22 counties and over 75,000 feet of climbing. “We want everyone to be able to come out and support these two wheeled warriors so street entertainment organised by Trim Chamber of Commerce will entertain spectators on the start line on the 9th September, 6.30pm at Trim Castle. Thanks to BlackBlox, people will be able to follow each rider using the live tracking feed on our website 24 hours per day” said Race Director Alan Heary.

The 2011 men’s solo race was won by Monaco rider Valerio Zamboni. His successful completion of the Race saw him become the Ultra-Marathon World Champion and he returns this year in the hope of retaining his title. He wont have it all his own way as 2010 Race Around Ireland winner Bernd Paul from Germany and Irish riders including Race Across America finisher Donncha Cuttriss are out to stop him.

Teams will cycle in a relay format day and night to finish the event in less than 4 days and this year the Race Around Ireland will see the British team Strategic Lions taking part. As an 8-person team they won the Race Across America in 2011. In Ireland they will compete as a 4-person team and the team includes 3 time Rás

stage winner and former British road race champion, John Tanner as well as Kevin Dawson who is the current British 100 mile time trial record holder.

EvElyn BoshEll from Kells, Co.Meath is going forward to the national finals of Slimming Worlds woman of the year finals in Dublin which are being held on the 16th of September. If she is successful she will go on to head office in Derbyshire, UK to the grand finals following in the footsteps of fellow slimmer man of the year finalist Bernard Hand.

Evelyn joined the Slimming World group in Kells on the 4th of January 2012 after a couple of her friends said they were going. Evelyn went on to lose an amazing 4 stone and four dress sizes in just over 26 weeks. She was absolutely amazed at the amount of free and superfree foods available on the plan without having to weigh, measure or count and was never hungry. Evelyn followed the Extra Easy plan from day one as it fitted into her busy lifestyle of mum to her 3 young children and weighing and measuring was the last thing on her mind.

Evelyn learned to cook all her favourite foods just the healthier Slimming World way, even her children are telling friends and family about the slimming world chips which are a free food on extra easy and they enjoy a couple of times a week. Some of her favourite dinners are the chow mein or the speed curry which are just so quick and easy to make. She also finds that by planning her meals at least a day in advance keeps her on track, if your organised and planned you will succeed.

Evelyn also finds the support of her fellow members and her consultant Lynne Woods brilliant as it keeps her going each week. Slimming World is all about the image therapy and motivation each week and not just a pay and weigh. Evelyn always stayed to group even if she had a gain as her consultant Lynne always says “ there’s no shame in a gain” and would get re-motivated for the week ahead.

Evelyn is delighted at her new found figure and healthy eating plan and fits in some exercise each day with her young family in the form of walking, cycling or playing ball in the garden. She is looking forward to the finals in Dublin and all the group has their fingers crossed for her.

If you or someone you know would like to join Slimming World the Kells group meets each Wednesday @ 9.30am, 11.30am and 5.30pm and 7.30pm. in the Handball Alley social club (opposite Garda Station)Watch out for a leaflet coming through your door, if you don’t need it give it to someone you love who may need our help. ThE sEason has started all over again after the summer holidays; already there are a number of hotels locally who are having wedding fairs. The rds wedding fair has just passed with the wedding journal fares coming up in spring time. However you can visit an autumn wedding fayre that the wedding journal do in Belfast and dare I say it maybe get a Christmas shopping in. I believe you as potential brides and grooms should attend every wedding fayre you can, are you listening guys yes you, if nothing else to haggle over the prices when she is doing the ordering. After all it is your wedding day to. But lads don’t forget that golden rule, the wedding day,”it’s all about the bride”

Anyway over the next coming months I will try to guide you through that all important day, but first it’s important to make a good proposal. The girls love it and will make for a great story on your wedding day.

Lads there is help out there if you are having a problem being creative about the proposal. Those four words-“will you marry me”?. Might seem simple but ensuring they’re said just the right way can be scary. That’s why proposals have become an industry in themselves, with planners specialising in that down-on-one-knee moment joining the more traditional breed of wedding planners. And it’s no wonder the experts are being called in –A recent study found that 80% of women were disappointed with the way their man popped the question.

See what I mean “it’s all about the bride”Here’s a story about John and Sophie, John hired the help of a proposal planner, who advised them to go Dublin n for the weekend. John booked an expensive hotel. Sophie loves music and roses, so the planners made sure to incorporate both. So on their first night john took Sophie to a bar they’d found in the temple bar district with a trad band playing and lots of people drinking and enjoying the music. Being a British girl Sophie soaked up the atmosphere, but john knew most of them were hired in actors.

Half way during the first song john went to the bathroom , As soon as john disappeared the band started playing their favourite song, which is love you till the end. At that stage people in the bar walked up to Sophie and handed her a red rose. Every rose had a photo of the pair of them. By the end of the song Sophie’s arms were full of roses with photos and notes. John returned to the bar with one final rose with an engagement ring attached and a note saying will you be my wife. She said yes.

What a great memory both of them will have. Women employ our services as wedding planners so lads why not employ the service of a proposal planner. Men are nervous about asking the biggest question of their lives, so it makes sense for them to have a bit of professional guidance.

FANCY CRAZY are better known on the local live music circuit as NINE INCH TRIO a top class covers band attracting huge crowds across the North East in recent times. FANCY CRAZY,the originals version, will shortly promote their highly acclaimed EP “Seven Seas”(available on iTunes) by touring nationwide with ex- Blizzards band members,SIRCLES from Mullingar. Such is their popularity that all three band members are currently touring the UK’s O2 Academy Venues (2000 + capacity) as part of a six-piece PEARL JEM, voted Europe’s NO.1 tribute band to PEARL JAM.

The trio include Robbie Fitzgerald from Navan on lead guitar,Andrew Quinn from Carnaross on drums and Brendan Reaburn from Slane on bass guitar, with all three hugely impressive on vocals!Robbie is considered by many to be amongst the best guitarists in the country,no surprise really, when you consider that his uncle is the legendary Jimmy Smyth from the recently reformed Bogey Boys.Drummer Andrew Quinn brings his kit centre stage and displays an amazing vocal range while “Ribs” Reaburn on bass, chips in for some of the heavier rock numbers.

For me the quality of the band’s professionally made videos are of the highest international standards. Why not take a few moments to check out their own compositions on video, “Kind Heart”, “Seven Seas”, “Don’t you want me?” or “ Will our love be free”can be seen on their excellent website www.fancycrazy.com .All four tunes from the “Seven Seas” EP are catchy and simple and have the potential to reach a huge audience even if talent nowadays is often not the deciding factor!Bad Apple Films from Kells, with Aidan Farrelly and Noel Smyth at the helm, bring out the best in the band visually and

even persuaded the captivating cheerleaders from the Trim Bulldogs, to add their own touch of class on screen!

Andrew Quinn, whose family run Jam Studios in Carnaross, describes how the band first got together “ It was completely by chance that the three of us started out as Robbie and Ribs were just filling in for two guys who were out sick! I knew from the very first song that we had clicked as a band.We were hopping off each other, solos happening effortlessly, with each of us firing ideas as quickly as we were catching them!.That same energy is there all of this time!”

The fans that follow the band across the North East have no doubts why FANCY CRAZY/ NINE INCH TRIO are so popular as a live band. In Beggy’s Navan I met a wide variety of fans. Paula and Michael Boyle from Drumconrath are there from the beginning and remarked “Individually they are brilliant musicians and when you put them together they perform as an amazing rock band” Paul Fitzgearld from Navan adds “The band cater for all tastes in music and can play anything and everything at short notice”.Mags Mullally from Athboy thoroughly enjoyed the gig and commented“ The band offer something completely different and definitely tickle my fancy!”

Amino AcidsAmino acids are the basic structure element of anybody proteins, including muscle proteins. Their adequate supply during the day, and especially in the peri-training period, determines keeping high quality muscle mass arising from an adequate speed of their recovery and growth.

You should always bear in mind that during the training anabolic process (building organism structures) become much slower, whereas catabolic ones (decomposition of organism structures) become more intense. Responding to numerous muscle tissue micro injuries arising from the training the body initiates mechanisms whose aim is to eliminate damaged proteins, by releasing cataboil enzymes which decompose them to individual amino acids.

Contracting muscle fibres need huge amounts of energy to be able to function. When the supplies of carbohydrates are exhausted, amino acids as a result of catabolic enzymes become used as an alternative source of energy. Increased level of

acidification as a result of anaerobic metabolism of muscle cells additionally strengthens the activity appropriate post-exercise recovery an adequate supplementation of building blocks and energetic ingredients lost during the exercise becomes ritual.

Immediate supply of amino acids required for the muscle recovery in easily assimiliable forms (whey protein hydrolisiate or collagen containing di- and tripeptides, free amino acids) allows for quick inhibition of catabolic enzymes and initiating the process of anabolic muscle protein regeneration.

A well adjusted post-training supplementation creates a state in which anabolic activity is much bigger than the catabolic one, which results in the intense rebuilding, regeneration and muscle mass gain.

There are supplements like whey protein, casein protein, isolate protein, bcaa’s, eaa’s and more which are excellent and easy ways in which to get all your amino acids needed quickly.

This year the winner of the Fair Play League, sponsored by Masita Sportswear, was Home Farm under 14 team. Morgan Biggs ( Home Farm under 14) , won the player-of the tournament award. Other sponsors included the Lynch Family, the Jewellery Box, Bective Financial Services, Gerry Beggy, Jim Tighe Building and Maintenace, Patrick Matthews, Paul Mooney Kitchens and Bedrooms, Conservations Solutions and Headfort Arms Hotel.

Matthews concluded, “Needless to say it takes a huge amount of organisation on a voluntary basis to make a tournament like this a reality. A great deal of thanks must go to the referees, first aiders, sponsors, the multitude of helpers and the hard-working club committee of the KelllsBlackwater F. C. who made the whole event run smoothly.”

1 local team got to their respective finals. In the under 15 CONSERVATIONS SOLUTIONS Final, KellsBlackwater F. C. lost to top Dublin schoolboy side Home Farm in the final.

This monTh sees Navan Cosmos FC celebrate its 35 years of existence with special celebrations taking place in The Stonehouse Navan on 8th September. Founded in 1977 the Cosmos have grown to include schoolboy teams in recent years and appropriately secured promotion to the top flight this year, the Premier Division of the MDL . 1982 saw the Cosmos win the prestigious Challenge Cup trophy. Check next month's issue of The Meath Herald for full coverage of the celebrations!

midfielder CaThal Brady strarted out with his local schoolboy club, Dunboyne FC, in Co.Meath . “Dotsy” went on to play with Bohemians,Kildare County and Longford Town, where he played alongside Keith Gillespie(ex-Man.Utd,Newcastle &Blackburn). The 26 year old works as a physio for Ratoath’s Sports Injury Clinic and scored his first goal in the 2-1 win over Shelbourne.

You’re known as “Dotsy” by everyone at the club. How did you come to have that nickname? It started when I was a baby with my sister calling me “Dotto”- she couldn’t pronounce “Cathal!”The only person that calls me “Cathal” is my mam!Even now I have to double check that she is talking to me!

You played most of the games when you were with Kildare and Longford but you’ve been unlucky with injuries since you signed for Drogheda. The main reason would be that I had just had a hernia operation before I came to Drogheda. There was a knock-on effect which lead to groin problems.I ended up needing cortisone injections to reduce the inflammation. Then the stiffness that results means that it’s hard to catch up on fitness levels.Yes last season I played more than 30 games for Longford so it’s been disappointing to miss out through injury so much with Drogheda. September will be a big month for the club with the EA Sports League Cup final against Rovers on 22nd and the FAI Cup Quarter-Final versus St.Pat’s the week before. Then there are three League games against Bray,Derry and St.Pat’s. It’s great for everyone at the club to have reached a cup final. We’ve a great group spirit at the club and we work very well for each other.Hopefully it will stand to us again next month so we can do ourselves justice in all three competitions.

What’s your take on being drawn away to St.Pat’s in the

quarter-final of the FAI Cup on 16th September We know we have nothing to fear.We had a fully deserved 2-0 over them the last time we played them in Inchicore. We really dug deep and put in a great team effort. What did you make of ex-Man Utd /Newcastle/Blackburn star , Keith Gillespie, signing for Longford when you were there last season? It was a major surprise and it affected me straight away as I found myself being dropped! I had been playing away on the right wing when Keith took my place! Thankfully he was switched to centre-midfield soon afterwards and I got my place back and held on to it for the rest of the season.

Would Gillespie be still in demand for autographs etc when playing for Longford?Very much so. After every game, home or away, you’d always see Keith being asked for photos and autographs . He is always very obliging.

What was it like to play alongside Keith Gillespie? His delivery from set-pieces and his crosses are still top-notch.He would have a calming influence on games. He’d alway know when to hold on to the ball and when to pass though obviously much slower at the age of 37 nowadays.Keith is a quiet, private type of person and has come through a lot in his personal life!

Who do you travel with to games/training?I meet up with Fabio and Alan Byrne in Clonee, which is near where I live in Ratoath. The three of us then pick up Eric Foley along the way.

I see your dad comes along to most of our games.I even saw him over in Sligo!Yes my dad has been a great support throughout my career, even though he is a big Gaelic Football fan!We play a bit of golf together sometimes too.

You must get some slagging when you’re out injured and you

being a physio yourself!Yes the lads joke that here I am giving out plenty of advice on how to recover from injuries etc and I can’t stay injury-free myself!

DROGS TO PLAY SHAMROCK ROVERS IN EA SPORTS LEAGUE CUP FINAL ON 22nd SEPT

Navan Cosmos FC CelebrateAn Amazing

35 Years!

afTer The huge excitement of knocking out the current league leaders,Sligo Rovers,in the semi-final,Mick Cooke’s charges will face a much improved Shamrock Rovers in the decider at Tallaght Stadium(Kick Off 5.45 pm).Drogheda have proven to be the surprise package of the season as they climbed to second position in the league behind favourites,Sligo Rovers. However they face a re-juvenated Rovers, with recent signing, Tommy Stewart,in sparkling form.Rovers have defeated the Drogs on each of the three occasions they have met this season and will be hot favourites to lift the trophy. However a Cup final is a once off, with Drogheda on their day, capable of beating the best in the country,as they have proved so often this year.
