Improve 3 key elements of the grocery store experience

Why?To do a quick research is relatively easy

There is room for some obvious improvement It mixes digital and real world experiences

I did a quick survey at my local grocery store. Here the results of this survey:

MotivationsCarla goes to the grocery store once per week She is a busy person, so she always go to Walmart because it’s open 24x7 She lives in NYC, and Walmart is very busy all the time She hates lines in Walmart. Well, she hates lines everywhere! She can’t understand why coupons are delivered in paper format She’s an avid runner following an strict vegetarian diet, so she always buys the same stuff

Online behaviorCarla is comfortable using mobile devices She goes online for shopping She uses Evernote to put together shopping lists She doesn’t like coupons, but she considers shopping coupons are really useful

Idea #1: Get rid of checkout lines

• Customers at the grocery store will have no need of going through a checkout line

• Checkout to be done ‘on the go’ • The cart will be your interface

• Use your mobile device • Include the ability to have more than one list • Add cost estimates for your list • Scan products as you go to add them to your list

• The shopping cart will have a product detector • Automatic checkout for each product • It will check the product in the shopping list • The product alarm will be disabled

• There will be a touchscreen in the product cart • To be paired with the mobile device via NFC

• No need of checkout counters! Only alarm sensors are required • Every article must be tagged with an alarm

(1) - Login Login screen for the mobile app

(2) - ErrorIn case of login error, we display an error message on top of the login screen

(3) - Sign up Registration form

(4) - Shopping lists List of shopping lists They can be removed, new ones can be created

(5) - Shopping list detail Shopping list. Items can be added via the product scanner, or removed. Every item contains a picture, name, price and quantity

(6) - Shopping history Same format than the shopping list page It includes transaction data (date, price) and details (list of items)

(1) - Pair screen It displays the code of the cart, which is displayed at the same time in the cart’s touchscreen

(2) - Scan screen When we want to add new articles to a list or we scan an item which is not part of a list, the item appears on screen and we can add it to the list we select in the next screen

(3) - Coupons screen It displays a list of coupons automatically assigned to the customer, based on shopping habits. When selected, the cart indicates where is the product

(1) - Coupon warning It comes up on the cart’s touchscreen based on customer’s assigned coupons as long as the customer walks through the store

(2) - Checkout page The checkout starts in the cart’s touchscreen. It appears the list of products the user has selected. The checkout cancels the product alarms and generates a bill to be charged to the customer’s credit card
