SUMMER2015

Educating, performing, engaging and promoting the arts in all its forms. From Drama and Dance, to Music, Concerts, Theatre or Opera, the Written Word or Static Art; allowing it to be expressed, experienced and enjoyed.

Lives are not just of great worth, they are priceless. We see people develop across the board, learn not just skills but about themselves, change lives and families through those lives. Users, class-members, interns, volunteers or staff, we want to see all grow and develop.

We treat our local community as anyone who can walk here! We’re passionate about seeing relationships and connections grow. We’re here to serve, and we want to do that in as many helpful and encouraging ways as possible, to engage with real problems in a tangible way.

welcome to the gate...We are a charity! The Gate Trust exists to enrich the lives of people across Cardiff; we have three main focuses in doing so:

In The Red (We’ll Always Be Blue)Performed by BLT, this adult comedy tells the story of two lifelong Cardiff City fans who are waiting to go to the game which might see their team promoted to the Premier League – something they have longed for forever. Male identity, football and the identity of the club you love are all examined in this hilarious and disturbing comedy from the multi-award winning playwright, Vic Mills. This is an absolute must for Bluebird fans, football fans, and lovers of theatre or comedy.

VillagersDarling Arithmetic is the third album from Villagers, released April 2015. The follow-up to Conor O’Brien’s debut, Becoming a Jackal, and its successor, Awayland - both hugely acclaimed and Mercury-nominated – is a breathtakingly beautiful, intimate album entirely about love and relationships. Darling Arithmetic was written, recorded, produced and mixed by O’Brien at home, revealing a single-minded artist at the peak of his already considerable song writing powers. It encompasses the various shades of feeling – desire, obsession, lust, loneliness and confusion, and deeper into philosophical and existential territory, across a cast of lovers, friends, family and even strangers. Backing up his emoting vocal and guitar is the subtlest palate of instrumentation – piano, Mellotron and brushes. O’Brien plays every instrument on these exquisite, melodic songs in a sparse, spacious, acoustic-leaning fashion. Now three albums in, Villagers is the front for playfulness and seriousness, mystery and revelation. By going back to the root of song writing, O’Brien has reinvented himself.

Tickets: £15

The Beggar’s OperaOpera'r Ddraig brings to life John Gay's historical hit The Beggar's Opera. Set in the thoroughly corrupt underworld of eighteenth-century England, the satirically sharp comedy centres around notorious womaniser and highwayman Captain Macheath, his new wife Polly and her wronged rival Lucy. In a new production, performed with full orchestra and headed by the same team who brought you the recently successful Hansel & Gretel- this is one not to be missed!

Trevor's House By Bob Rogers

There are two ways to be rich, one is to have everything, and the other is to want nothing. But it’s a rare person who doesn’t dream of what could be… In Trevor’s House, Bob Rogers gives us a dark and waspish comedy about a South Wales Valleys family in competition with itself; where the virtual world of gory computer games is sometimes preferable to the real-life knock-down drag-out war that threatens to erupt closer to home. Compassion and innocence find themselves in a battle with bitterness and greed - but love and laughter have always been powerful trump cards to play. (Trevor’s House is the 2015 winner of the prestigious Playmakers Festival Award and this will be the first performance in Wales.)

Tickets: £10/£7 Cons

Sat 23 May, 7.30pm

Gaz Coombes: Matador“The hardest fight is the one you fight alone” ‘Matador’It’s been an extraordinary journey for Gaz Coombes, from flashily whiskered pop tearaway to Ivor Novello and BRIT award winning rock star to sound tracking the summer (he was responsible for that sublime cover of The Kinks ‘This Time Tomorrow’ for John Lewis earlier this year). However the mega-watt melodic genius responsible for ten Top 20 hits and six Top 20 albums has often obscured the fact that he’s had his fair share of bumps along the way. His new album is both intimate and unflinchingly honest but at its heart, however, there’s a romantic core that binds Matador’s songs together. Call it the return of the album if you like, but one thing’s for sure. Matador is the sound of one of Britain’s greatest songwriters facing the future with a flourish.

the gate in focus...

So you’ve been here for over a third of your apprenticeship now? Was it what you expected? It was unanimously agreed that the apprenticeship had been what they expected and more!

David, Venue & Events Management Apprentice: “It has met my expectations and exceeded them. I feel that I have much more responsibility than expected within The Gate, which gives me the freedom to really develop my skills in Venue and Events Management.”Joanne, Marketing and Events Apprentice: “I agree with David, I have been given so much more responsibility within the marketing and events department than I expected, the experience I am gaining is amazing.”

What has been your biggest challenge doing this role?Due to all having different roles within The Gate their challenges varied.

Joshua, Lighting & Sound Technician Apprentice: “The venue hosts a wide selection of classes, societies and shows so a week can become quite busy. It means we have to carefully plan our lighting rig and technical equipment so we can accommodate all that happens in the week, which can be quite challenging in the busy periods. It also makes scheduling time for rigging and maintenance very vital; calling for some great efficiency in the few hours we have between classes for shows to make sure we are ready for the upcoming weeks.”David: “It took me a while to get used to the wide range of events that take place here, but this just means that my role is more exciting as no two days are the same.”

What would you say to anyone thinking about doing an apprenticeship?

Joanne: “I think they should definately apply. Even though I have a Master’s degree in the sector I want a career in I struggled to get a job due to lack of experience. This has been the perfect stepping stone and I feel I have gained a lot in just the past few months!”David: “I would say go for it. Whilst I had my reservations before applying, I feel that I have gained an innumerable amount of experience here. The apprenticeship is very hard work, but it’s definitely a foot in the door, and will certainly help me to achieve my career goals.”Joshua: “For me it has been a great opportunity to hone the skills that I am lacking in the profession that I am in. I could have gone straight into doing Freelance technician and design work, but I would not have had the opportunity to develop what I lacked. Working here means I can really concentrate on rounding off my skill set without having to specialise specifically in one area of technical work.”
