The First Sunday of LentMarch 10th, 2019

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan

and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil.

Jesus was filled with and led by the Holy Spirit into the desert for a time of trial. Why would the Holy Spirit lead Jesus,or any of us, into temptations. Don't we pray for the opposite in the Our Father, as in, "Lead us NOT into temptation..." Strange, the ways of the Lord, in fact, the Scriptures are clear, "Your ways are not my ways, sayeth the Lord." When do our ways notharmonize with His ways? I'll say that its when we rely on ourselves and not God. Jesus was totally dependent on God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus, fully human and fully divine, did not rely onhimself. What does that say for us? Should I, sinner that I am, rely on myself. The world says, "Believe in yourself", but Jesussays, "Deny yourself". What is to be made of these contradictions? Whatever we do, trust in Jesus is always better than trustingin ourselves. The Scripture says again, "Put no trust in princes, trust in the Lord." Lent is a wonderful time to examine where our hearts and minds are at regarding reliance on God. We have grown ac-customed to relying on ourselves internally for figuring out how to do things, what is best, and how to spend my life. It is hardto reverse such deep-seeded habits of mind. But great changes begin slowly, quietly, almost hidden from sight. It begins the mo-ment we speak to God about our problems versus trying to figure it our on our own. Whatever the problem, it is neither too bignor too small for the Lord. The more we speak to Him, the more likely we will learn also to listen. The more we listen, themore we will know His holy will for our lives. Let us surrender all our self-reliance this Lenten season, trusting God to bring us to a better place during these fortydays of penance. How do we do this? Ask the Lord. He knows you perfectly and loves you perfectly. He is infinitely trustwor-thy with our lives. He knows our hearts and their wounds. He desires to heal us and make us whole. Which means also beingwholly reliant on Him. Jesus told St. Paul, "Your weakness is my strength." Let us pray for the grace to embrace our weaknessand allow the Lord to be our strength during this Lenten season.

Study Update Thanks for all who were praying for me during my time of study at Mundelein Seminary. I've made significant progresson my thesis paper, which is focused on Bl. Antonio Rosmini's Five Wounds of the Church. The Five Wounds was rejected bythe Church, being placed on the Index of Forbidden books in 1849. No reason was given, nor any retraction made possible forBlessed Rosmini. The history of the publication of the Five Wounds shows plenty of political motivation for its condemnation. It stayed on the Index until the Index was dissolved in 1966. St. John Paul II asked for his works (over 100) to be reexamined. They were exonerated and Pope Benedict XVI beatified him in 2007. I will be attempting to show the relevance of the Five Wounds for today so that our Church can be deeply healed andrenewed in this time of trial. I'll be continuing to work on this paper in my spare time. Please continue to keep me and this workin your prayers. Thanks to all who kept the parish going in my absence, especially Fr. Jaya and our Pastoral Team. The weathercreated a great challenge with our parish hall, but God's providence is supreme, so it gives us a chance to renew some thingsdownstairs. Thanks for your patience and your faith-filled support.

Yours in Christ,

Archdiocese of Seattle - Official Guidelines for Lent 2019Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to the certain goal of Easter, Christ’s victory over death. This season urgently calls us toconversion. Christians are asked to return to God “with all their hearts” (Joel 2:12), to refuse to settle for mediocrity and to grow infriendship with the Lord. Jesus is the faithful friend who never abandons us. Even when we sin, he patiently awaits our return; bythat patient expectation, he shows us his readiness to forgive. Lent is a favorable season for deepening our spiritual life through themeans of sanctification offered us by the Church: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. At the basis of everything is the word of God,which during this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply.(From the Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for Lent 2017)

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.Fasting is to be observed by all eighteen years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their sixtieth birthday. On a fast day,one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but togetherthey should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.Abstinence is observed by all fourteen years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health orability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priestshould be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumensshould undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter.(Code of Canon Law, 1251-1252)Penitential Practices - In addition to the universal Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, Paschale Solemnitatisspecifically commends the celebration of the form of the Rite of Penance according to the rite of reconciliation of several penitentswith individual confession and absolution. During times when we wish to express repentance and especially during Lent, it is customary to praythese penitential psalms, designated as such from the seventh century. Prayerfully reciting these psalmswill help us to recognize our sinfulness, express our sorrow and ask for God’s forgiveness.
