Q: What about APIs? Who’s do the M2M solutions use?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Have to choose between the more common vs. the less common•Standards are emerging including TIA TR-50•The structure of the overall solution plays a part in determining what APIs to use •Also have to consider how the APIs are managed and developed as well as authenticated•What is the tolerance of the target M2M application to being locked in to a particular vendor and/or devices•There is abstraction at the layers of the overall solution – what is used at the edge & access layer differs from what is needed at each the pre-aggregation, aggregation, core, and application layers.•Considerations also need to be taken for managed homogenous characteristics of the APIs without losing uniqueness and the ability to differentiate•Authentication plays a role as well

Q: How do we address “Carriers as Barriers”?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Business value•Options are sometimes limited therefore flexibility is needed•Can not abandon legacy as push to the next generation (2G/3G vs. LTE)•Can’t limit M2M to just communication via the cellular networks. Legacy twisted pair, WAN etc. networks are still viable and in use•New standards for certification are coming into play – i.e. new approach is WIP at Deutche Telecom that minimizes the need to get certification from each of the carriers•With respect to provisioning:

– Serial certification– Ingredient platform design– Multi cellular carriers supported within a single device

Q: How is billing for M2M different from data rate plans for consumer smart devices?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Carriers are starting to introduce data plans for M2M devices that are more appropriate to their usage•Differs significantly from consumer smart device data usage•Not a one-size fits all method•The Kindle subsidized data plan example was referenced – data included in the price of the device not as a separate contract or bill to manage or require the creation of a separate predictive budgeting process

Q: What about setting up a M2M sandbox?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Due to the variances of usage by different markets and sub-segments, a single unified approach doesn’t fully address needs•There is collaboration between technology leaders to develop solution blueprints that address market usages – i.e. The intelligent system framework and joint ecosystem efforts•Municipal entities are coming together to address specific needs such as development of regional public safety system interoperability•These efforts address some of the vulnerability to the M2M solution to which the carrier differences and coverage overlaps or absences contribute•Can take up usage of abandoned spectrum as well as extended use of the legacy networks (i.e. twisted pair)•This goes beyond traditional ecosystems addressing the nature of IoE•Hybridization of public & private networks plays a role as well
