M2M = Trillions of End Points, Sensors, Edge Nodes, Aggregators, Gateways, Etc.

• M2M is more than just machine-to-machine – Mobile to mobile– Mobile to machine– Machine to mobile

• All working together to improve process efficiency and productivity and the data demands of B2B, B2C, B2B2C, etc. as if all elements are in the same location

• The way these points (machine & mobile) communicate with one another is evolving to match THE CLOUD

• Ultimately, everything and everyone are connected

• M2M leading way to Internet of Everything (IoE)

IoE and M2M’s Role“Intelligent connection of people, process, data, and things on the network”

• 15 billion devices connected by 2015 & approx. 40 billion by 2020

• Today, > 99% of all physical objects that will be networked are currently unconnected

• IoE enabler: network intelligence fueling manageability, controllability & scalability growth

• Relevance of Connections = outcomes they make possible

• Handling and processing of Big Data - Extracting valuable info that is immediately actionable (for people and context-aware machines)

• The Network Effect Newer capabilities, richer experiences, & unprecedented value

• Risks: maintaining security & protecting privacy• Vital necessity of every connection, from core to

edge• More intelligent networks c/o big data, cloud

computing, BYOD, mobility, new SW apps• Success requires unprecedented cooperation

between companies & organizations

Factors to Consider for M2M:Remote, Manageable, Secure, Flexible

• Enormous amounts of data constantly being collected by diverse devices– The Internet of Things (IoT)

• Require reliable means of communicating – Wired and Wirelessly– End to End Solutions (E2E)

• Protocols vary for diverse vertical markets and geographical regions

• Design flexibility and longevity is essential– Proprietary– Existing Requirements– Future Requirements

• Optimized TCO and TTM is a requirement – Retrofit of legacy discrete solutions– New all-in-one solution– Diversity of assets to connect

• Need to be easy to install/initialize/monitor/maintain– Install site access constraints– Skilled Labor / Union constraints

Wise Choices Today Lead to Long Term Interoperability and Lower TCO

• M2M Growth Drivers: Opportunity & Necessity• M2M SW platform helps to simplify process

– OS – Tools – M2M Middleware availability

• Making it easier to design, build, and operate M2M / smart connected devices

• Full & effective integration into broader Intelligent Systems from devices to data centers

• Take the long view – short cuts today leader to higher TCO– Quality– Longevity of solution– Support costs– Operations issues– Software updates– Emerging standards– Supply chain complexity

Q: What is the most influential driving factor for M2M growth?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Growth:

– B2B is driven by safety, cost reduction & incremental sales opportunities– B2C is driven by value achieved through innovation & emotional response– About addressing pent up demand. Addressing the gap and the “chasm of

capability”– The types of data that are gathered, the perceived value of that information &

what is done with that information– Considerations have to be taken for how to encapsulate the information

• Efficiency:– This pertains to the solutions’ stickiness – Silos or Cooperation

Q: What about APIs? Who’s do the M2M solutions use?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Have to choose between the more common vs. the less common•Standards are emerging including TIA TR-50•The structure of the overall solution plays a part in determining what APIs to use •Also have to consider how the APIs are managed and developed as well as authenticated•What is the tolerance of the target M2M application to being locked in to a particular vendor and/or devices•There is abstraction at the layers of the overall solution – what is used at the edge & access layer differs from what is needed at each the pre-aggregation, aggregation, core, and application layers.•Considerations also need to be taken for managed homogenous characteristics of the APIs without losing uniqueness and the ability to differentiate•Authentication plays a role as well

Q: How do we address “Carriers as Barriers”?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Business value•Options are sometimes limited therefore flexibility is needed•Can not abandon legacy as push to the next generation (2G/3G vs. LTE)•Can’t limit M2M to just communication via the cellular networks. Legacy twisted pair, WAN etc. networks are still viable and in use•New standards for certification are coming into play – i.e. new approach is WIP at Deutche Telecom that minimizes the need to get certification from each of the carriers•With respect to provisioning:

– Serial certification– Ingredient platform design– Multi cellular carriers supported within a single device

Page 14: The Evolving Role of M2M in Intelligent Systems and IoE Panel Discussion Moderator: Christine Van De Graaf, Senior Product Strategy Manager, Lilee Systems.

Q: How is billing for M2M different from data rate plans for consumer smart devices?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Carriers are starting to introduce data plans for M2M devices that are more appropriate to their usage•Differs significantly from consumer smart device data usage•Not a one-size fits all method•The Kindle subsidized data plan example was referenced – data included in the price of the device not as a separate contract or bill to manage or require the creation of a separate predictive budgeting process

Page 15: The Evolving Role of M2M in Intelligent Systems and IoE Panel Discussion Moderator: Christine Van De Graaf, Senior Product Strategy Manager, Lilee Systems.

Q: What about setting up a M2M sandbox?

Panelists’ Perspectives:•Due to the variances of usage by different markets and sub-segments, a single unified approach doesn’t fully address needs•There is collaboration between technology leaders to develop solution blueprints that address market usages – i.e. The intelligent system framework and joint ecosystem efforts•Municipal entities are coming together to address specific needs such as development of regional public safety system interoperability•These efforts address some of the vulnerability to the M2M solution to which the carrier differences and coverage overlaps or absences contribute•Can take up usage of abandoned spectrum as well as extended use of the legacy networks (i.e. twisted pair)•This goes beyond traditional ecosystems addressing the nature of IoE•Hybridization of public & private networks plays a role as well
