Bibliography of terrestrial maritime and celestial atlases and pilot books published in the Netherlands from 1570 up to the 20th cen-tury in nine volumes each describing a coherent group of atlases together with extensive indexes The work is fully illustrated with all engraved title-pages all maps of the folio atlases and a selection of the other maps The first edition of Atlantes Neerlandici was com-piled and edited by professor C Koeman and published in six volu-mes by Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in Amsterdam from 1967-1985 Koemanrsquos magistral work was the first in the field of atlas-bibliography This completely revised edition has new bibliographical descriptions of the atlases and maps according to the latest standards and partly rests on an inquiry sent to about 1500 libraries all over the world

In the later eighteenth and earlier nineteenth centuries novels were believed to have the power to shape andor change behaviour and by implication affect the political landscape of society on a large scale The English response to the French Revolution can be traced through a reading of the novels of the period The French Revolution in itself was indelibly associated with the domestic arena and thus by extension with women It was through the medium of the novel that women could enter the debate on revolution using their novels as means through which to explore many of the dominant social and political issues of the dayThe novel more often than not set in the family home was a medium uniquely suited to an exploration of revolutionary ideologies in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries The emerging form of the novel offered a unique opportunity for women to present new challenging perspectives on the revolutionary crisis of the 1790s The works of Frances Burney Charlotte Smith Mary Wollstonecraft Mary Robinson Maria Edge-worth Mrs Bullock and Jane Austen all occupy an important place in this debate and indeed in the history of the novel They demonstrate that women were at the forefront of development of the form of the novel itself

The Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem Facsimile Edition

The Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem is the finest contemporary col-lection of maps charts topographical prints and drawings handed down to us from the seventeenth century Completely intact and presently housed in the Austrian National Library in Vienna the atlas is one of the most interesting and precious pieces of national and international heritage and is the result of a lifetime of meti-culous collecting and careful preservation over the centuries The Amsterdam lawyer Laurens van der Hem (1621-1678) used his copy of the eleven-volume Atlas Maior by Blaeu (1662) as a portmanteau for other cartographical and topographical prints and drawings He augmented the 600 maps of his Atlas Maior to an atlas that now consists of 50 volumes with over 2400 maps charts drawings and views of towns buildings and harbours seascapes and landscapes including secret manuscript maps and charts made for the Dutch East India Company (VOC)

We have worked in the past years to prepare a facsimile edition of the volumes of this incredibly beautiful atlas that pertain to the 11 volumes containing the material regarding Africa America amp Asia including the ldquoSecretrdquo Atlas of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) In 2011 we have finished the publication of this superb facsimile bound in eight folio volumes including nearly 500 views maps and charts (58 cm x 44 cm) Close collaboration with the Austrian National Library and specialists in the fields of lithography printing binding marketing and historical carto-graphy has resulted in this splendid series of prestigious and grand books that combines and represents the best cartographic mate-rials of these continents of the 17th and 21st century
