One Year LaterBy Father Luke Melackrinos

Right after our incredible festival, we celebrated the one year memorial service for our beloved Father Nicholas J. Magoulias. For all of his tireless service to our Cathedral, we honored him by naming the administrative, community center portion of our facilities after him. All of us whose lives were touched by Father Nick can agree that the beautiful community that we are part of is largely due to the life of self-sacrifice and love that we all witnessed in his ministry. Father Nick’s priesthood was a service of sacrifice, humility and humor. I know, personally, that my priesthood is strongly influenced by the great example that was given to me by Father Nick. His only goal was to love the people of this community and to bring them closer to God. A parishioner once told me that Father Nick lived the Christian life, not in a way that was external, but as a person of deep faith. I echo this sentiment strongly, as I remember his love and Christianity lived out to the extreme. I cannot remember a time that he ever refused the request of a parishioner. His quiet, strong leadership is one that we can all strive to emulate. And certainly we are reaping the fruits of this now. A year later, I still miss him. I know that all of us who knew him miss him as well. My prayer is that we all become worthy of the sacrifices that he made to make this community so great. Αιωνία η μνήμη αυτου. Knowing Father Nick, I am certain that he would not want us to remember him sadly and to dwell on the past. I can hear him telling us all to move forward and to keep growing as a community in Christ. He does not want us to sit on the laurels of the past. He does not want us to stop working to make this Cathedral the greatest community we can. It is easy for us to keep looking back and say, “I have done my part.” This is easy and certainly wrong. Father Nick worked hard to make this community great and it would be a disservice to his memory if we all don’t strive to be like him in his love for the Cathedral of St. Paul. He wants us to gather again as the Body of Christ in worship, fellowship and joy. With this in mind, I look forward to worshipping and re-connecting with all of you after another refreshing summer. Let us begin another Ecclesiastical Year prayerfully and with our eyes on our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Welcome BackBy Father Panagiotis Zougras

I pray you all had a peaceful and enjoyable summer. The summer often gives us the time we need to reflect on the past year and see what we should

do to improve ourselves in the upcoming year. Since ancient times Christians have preached the importance of self-reflection. The Ten Principles of Universal Wisdom goes on to say “We are essentially all children of God with brilliantly shining souls. However, just as a diamond accumulates dirt if it is neglected, our souls inevitably collect dust and grime as we live in this world. We are supposed to refine our own souls and this is actually our spiritual discipline. Although someone else could wash your physical body, only you can cleanse your own soul because you are responsible for polishing it.” As I sat back and began to write my article for the Epistle, I began to reflect on this past summer. The best feeling I got was when I thought of all the wonderful programs St. Paul’s provided for our youth this summer for them to take the time and properly learn more about their faith and to reflect on their personal lives. They also learned skills on how to live a better spiritual life. Our youth Bible camp at St. Paul’s was held on June 25th-29th. It was a blessing to see our youth so happy to learn about their faith and interact with both the young adults and the adults of St. Paul’s. We are blessed to have a devoted and knowledgeable staff led by Catherine Marinos. Catherine was assisted by Lia Pantelidis, Anthony Englezos, Mary Bassias, Elyse Zappia, Eve Rigas, Lily Bassias and Panteli Marinos. We cannot thank you enough for all the love and attention you showed these young children of our community. It is extremely important for us to exercise both our spirituality and our physical well being. To keep our youth active we provided a Basketball Camp during the weeks of June 25th-28th and July 16th-19th. This mini camp provided a great learning experience for the children to improve on their basketball skills. The children also took the time during each day of camp to have a devotional with both Father Luke and myself. I was so happy to see how well the children enjoyed to learn new skills and discuss their faith. This program could not be

possible if it was not for the hard work and devotion of John Caragiorgis, Floyd Banks, Mark Morse and Bob Savarese. You men did a great job of bringing the children closer to their faith through sport. Our Diocese Camp “Camp St. Paul” was a great way to take care of two important things at once–exercise and prayer! It was wonderful to see how many of our children attended this camp. It allowed them the opportunity to interact with other Orthodox Christians from the Diocese as well as learn more about their faith. It also provided an opportunity for the children to experience confession. Father Luke and I attended camp as well and were proud to see such a large group of campers who attended from our parish. We also had two great counselors representing St. Paul’s, Virginia Pourakis and Maria Giannopoulos as well as the camp director Vincent Minnucci. Good Luck Vincent on your new role as Associate Youth Director of the Diocese. Finally, I would like to thank the entire Greek School Committee for working so hard on this year’s Greek School Program. This year will bring a lot of positive changes both in the curriculum and in the physical structure of the Casssis Building. Throughout the summer the committee worked alongside with contractors to renovate the classrooms for our students. I am looking forward to spending another great year with each and every one of you. God Bless You All

From the PresidentBy James N. Georgakis

On Sunday August 19th, we celebrated the 9th anniversary of Father Luke’s ordination and service to our Parish. We have all been very fortunate to have Father and his family as part of our community

and I wish him many more years as part of our family at St. Paul.I hope that each one of had a wonderful summer. It went by much too quickly. I am also looking forward to our community gearing up for another year of activities with all the wonderful ministries our Cathedral offers. Registration Sunday was on September 9th and I hope you all took the opportunity to stop by and talk to all the organizations. We have so many things to offer to each member in our community that I thought I would highlight just a few of them. Each of the youth groups offer something unique to those in each age groups, such as a variety of recrea-tional, religious, philanthropic and social activities. Each of these groups are led by Father Luke and Father Peter and are always under adult supervision by volunteers. They are: Little Angels - ages 40 days - 4 years, Hellenic Orthodox Primary Enrichment (HOPE) ages 4-6 years, Junior Orthodox Youth (JOY) ages 7-12, Greek Orthodox Youth of America (GOYA) ages 13-18, Young Adult League (YAL) ages 18+ and our Mommy and Me and Pioneers programs. In addition, we offer Sunday and Greek Language programs for our youth. Most recently we had a major renovation of the Cassis Building. The rooms were painted, new lighting was installed, the basement was cleaned out and gutted and a new computer room was in-stalled. We also have our Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts of Troop 568 which provides a full pro-gram of activities for boys, young men and women. We have several community galas that offer an opportunity to promote social interaction and create long-lasting friendships. They are: Christmas Dance, an annual family event normally held in December (please note that this year we are most likely moving this to January so that our entire community can share in the cutting of the Vasilopita), Apokreatiko Glendi; The community-wide “Mardi-Gras” like celebration. In ad-dition to these we have our Annual New Year’s Eve Dinner which will be held at Jonathans Restaurant. We have many groups that offer a wide variety of social and philanthropic activities. They are: Our Annual Greek Festival is by far our largest fundraiser. The Festival gives people an opportunity to spend time with friends and by working the festival, then contribute to the needs of our Church and community. This year we again had a very successful Festival. Our Family Fall Festival is a family oriented mini-festival to wel-come back our families and provide an opportunity to meet new families in our parish. The Family Fall Festival will be held on Sunday, September 30th.The Mr. and Mrs. Club that sponsors social, religious and fundraising events for the Church’s married cou-ples and several Seniors Clubs offering members’ trips, lectures and get together in friendship on a regular basis. Our Fellowship Hour which is held Sunday after each liturgy offers an opportunity for social interaction over coffee and cake and for various organizations, to provide information on upcoming events.

There are so many other organizations and programs that would take so much more space to describe. So I encourage each of you to look for upcoming events and organizations through our weekly Sunday Bulletin, our bi-monthly publication “The Epistle,” and our mailings and the newly updated website. The website can be accessed by going to www.stpaulhempstead.org

Finally A Bookstore, but...By Deacon Mathew Kakis

By the Grace of God and the support of our Parish Council, a permanent home for our bookstore has become a reality. Besides the many titles offered before, we have been able to add some 35 plus new titles with a concentration of finely illustrated children’s books as well as the complete Orthodox Study Bible. We also have secured beautiful Christmas Cards with various Nativityscenes and magnificent blank note icon cards depicting our Orthodox Saints and role models. Prices are attractively discounted as the mission of the bookstore is educational. However, kindly permit me to add a special note to be considered from Elder Paisios of Mount Athos: “Without Divine Illumination, Knowledge ends in Disaster”. These words are taken from the Elder’s book, With Pain and Love for the Contemporary Man. Thanks be to God, we are blessed to have such contemporary “lights” to advise us, especially yours truly, that if our search for holy knowledge does not include our desire for Divine Illumination, then we search in vain. In other words, we are to constantly pray for that illumination, obey His Commandments and step out in “fear, faith andlove” to receive that Gift. The Elder continues, consider for example the Psalter, the prayer book of the Church. It was written with divine inspiration. What profound meanings it contains! Gather together all the theologians and all the philologists of the world, and you will see that they are not able to compose one Psalm with such spiritual depth. King Davis was illiterate, but you can see clearly how he was guided by the Spirit of God.” We are never alone. Did Jesus not tell us throughHis Apostles that we should never worry as to what we are to say when we are to be a witness, (martyr) to and for Him? Did He not promise that the Comforter, the Holy Spirit will give us the utterance and knowledge at the very moment? So in spite of any limitations, seek the rightbooks and let us be like Mary, Lazarus’ sister, choose the better portion. Martha was well intentioned, however the dishes can wait. It’s been nearly three months since I, your mostunworthy servant, has been blessed to assist at His Most Holy Altar. May I express my profound gratitude to Father Luke, Father Peter, Strato, the chanters, the phenomenal choir, the altar servers, the board, and all the faithful of our beloved community for their warm embrace and welcome to this unbelievable calling.

By-Laws Committee Report:George Papazicos reported on behalf of the By-Laws committee. George advised that the Cathedral had received Bishop Andonios comments regarding our edits to our by-laws and are under review.

Financial Report:Spyro Georgopalis and George Marinos presented the invoices to be paid. A motion to pay the invoices was made by Lou Patrickakos, seconded by John Hajisava. Discussion ensued, motion carried.

St. Paul’s Daughters of Penelope, Pasithea Chapter #141By Pauline Alexander, President

I would like to say that I hope all of you had a wonderful summer but, if you are like me, you were just as busy as you were during the year! It is amazing how, when you are younger (20’s, 30’s even 40’s), you are actually able to go and spend whole days at the beach. Go figure. The Pasithea Chapter had a really great year. We welcomed new members and worked very hard to keep up with our fundraising events. Those events require the help of the entire chapter. So many people

It was evident that they all had an enjoyable afternoon.

Homebound MinistryBy Joan Prieston

The Homebound Ministry had its annual summer event on Wednesday, August 15th. It was especially memorable because on that day the Divine Liturgy for the Panaghia was celebrated which is also known as the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The Homebound members received Holy Communion along with the many parishioners who also attended this important religious holiday.

After the Divine Liturgy, the members enjoyed the delicious luncheon which was prepared especially

Vacation Church SchoolBy Catherine Marinos

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit was this year’s theme for Vacation Church School. Thirty participants spent the week learning how ten words, when practiced in one’s life, could bestow the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These ten words/fruits are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, long-suffering, mildness, fidelity and modesty. On Monday, the first three words were introduced and readings from the New Testament that mentioned the words were discussed. Lacking the Holy Spirit was likened to going on a trip and forgetting to pack a vital element that hindered one from fully enjoying their vacation - like omitting your toothbrush or pajamas or favorite reading material. Another example given was sitting at the table ready to partake in a meal - yet forgetting to wash your hands or say a prayer first. On the second day, the next three words were discussed and again referenced in the New Testament. The lesson included the Promise of the Holy Spirit (when Jesus instructed his Disciples to obey His Commandments and foretold of the Spirit that will remain with them forever), the coming of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) and the life in the Holy Spirit. On Wednesday, the final four fruits were discussed and the lesson included how the Holy Spirit descends during the Divine Liturgy to bless the offering and convert the bread into the body of Christ and the wine into the blood of Christ. Also mentioned was the Parable of the Ten Virgins and how the five were foolish because they lacked sufficient oil with which to burn their lamps- hence missing the arrival of the bridegroom past midnight. This reinforced the theme that if one lacks the “necessary fruit” then one’s efforts are in vain. On Thursday, Virginia Pourakis taught the kids a song entitled ‘Fruits of the Spirit’, which was perfect for the week and several of the campers sung the song in front of an audience on Friday, June 29th, at the Philoptochos sponsored lunch honoring the feast day of St. Paul. The lyrics are a good message for all of us: I am the Vine/ you are my branches/ abide in me/ live in my mansions. I’ll give you fruit/ hold on to me/ and you will see/ love, joy and peace. Patience and faith/ more self control/ kind, good and gentle/ fruits for the soul. Indeed, it is quite coincidental that His Eminence, Archbishop Demitrios, has also focused on the topic of the Holy Spirit and elected this year’s theme for the

41st Clergy-Laity Congress was to be: Chosen and Appointed by God to Go and Bear Fruit (John 15:16). Friday, Gerontisa Fotini from All Saint’s Monastery in Calverton, was visiting and took the time to speak to the children and offered her perspective on living a holy life with the Holy Spirit in mind. Throughout the week, the children made crafts such as wind chimes, kites, inspirational tiles and pillows. Fathers Luke and Panagiotis came by to answer questions and offer their spiritual guidance and blessing. Each day the message was restated that practicing the fruits of the Holy Spirit will yield wisdom, understanding and knowledge that serve to arm oneself against the evils of life and that by faith one can fight the good fight. The week was great and the campers were a delightful bunch. I couldn’t have done it without my trusty assistants, Mr. Anthony Englezos and Mrs. Mary Bassias to whom I am most grateful. Likewise, I’d like to acknowledge and thank my terrific helpers who volunteered their time: Elyse Zappia, Lia Pantelides, Lilly Bassias, Eve Rigas and Panteli Marinos.

School of Religious EducationBy Joan Prieston

On June 17th, the Sunday School concluded the school term in June with the graduation of our students. Many of our graduates committed to becoming graduate assistants for the 2012-2013 school term. The Sunday School participated in our annual Church Festival by having their own tent where various religious articles were offered. Several teachers, staff members and friends served as guides for our Church Tours. So many visitors commented on the professional presentation about our religion and particularly about our magnificent mosaics. The Sunday School is always aware of the needs within our church. When it was announced that monetary support was needed for the renovation of the Cassis Educational Building, the Sunday School Executive Board unanimously voted to donate $5000 for this very important cause. Please register your children for the 2012-2013 school term. The registration fee is still $20 for each student. This donation enables the Sunday School to fulfill its many responsibilities.

Grief & Bereavement Support GroupBy Kay Pamas

This is an extremely difficult article to write. I have reached the point that I have to give up attending the evening Grief & Bereavement Sessions due to my eyesight. I can’t drive at night but will be continuing the afternoon sessions.

It seems like only yesterday that I approached Father Nicholas Magoulias to start the program and yet it was over 18 years ago! It has been extremely helpful, interesting and so rewarding. I have met and worked with over 400 individuals and I thank each and everyone. I hope and pray I somehow helped them along on their ‘journey.’

I’m happy to say that I have chosen a wonderful lady, Anna Dounelis, to continue in my place. She too has suffered a great loss, her wonderful husband. She started attending shortly after his death three years ago and has participated in almost every meeting since by contributing and sharing her feelings. I know I’m leaving it in excellent hands.

As of September, we will return to the winter schedule, the second and fourth Wednesday evenings of the month, September 12th and September 26th, at 7:30 PM. The afternoon group remains the third Wednesday, September 19th, at 2:00 PM.

Everyone is welcome!

Grief & Bereavement Support GroupBy Anna Dounelis

It’s Like Saying ‘Good Bye’ All Over Again

Recently, some family members came to live with me for a time. I was delighted to have the company as my house is just too big for one person. My husband passed away three years ago and some days can be unbearably lonely.

John and I raised our four beautiful children in that home and it is filled with so many precious memories! After the funeral, I remember walking through each room, looking at the many treasured items we had accumulated during our 41 years together. They each had a special memory attached to them, but without John, they seemed trivial. Family photographs had always filled the walls of our home. Now, I have framed more and placed them on tables where I can always see my husband’s smiling face.Except for donating John’s car to a charitable

organization, I had not disposed of any of his belongings. I was now faced with the need to empty drawers and closets that contained his clothing, some of which were stored in our children’s empty bedrooms. This was something I was not ready to do! I wondered, ‘would I ever be ready?” Gathering up John’s clothing and giving it away would be like saying ‘good bye’ all over again!

Most of his clothing is now boxed, labeled and ready to be donated. I’m not finished going through everything as yet. There are special items I know my children may want to keep to remember their beloved father so it is an ongoing process. It’s been difficult and very emotional but it’s been the right thing to do and at the right time for me. John will always be in my heart and I miss his presence every day. But I see and hear him in our children and grandchildren and know he will never be forgotten.

Sorting through a departed loved one’s clothing and personal belongings, selecting favorite mementos to give to family members and then disposing of unwanted clothing is a difficult though a necessary task. Seeing, smelling and touching a loved one’s clothing and possessions can bring a flood of memories and feelings. Some choose to do this alone while others have a close friend or relative to assist.

When should you begin to organize and decide what to keep and what to give away? Only you can say when the time is right.

St. Paul’s Nursery School By Michele Yioupis & Tara Brennan

St. Paul’s Nursery School is a program with classes for the two, three and Pre-K age groups. In each class there is a certified teacher and an assistant. Our program offers a child-centered program designed to guide children in their physical, intellectual and emotional growth in a nurturing Christian environment. We provide skills to be developed during the school year which include, but are not limited to, language development and literacy, mathematical and scientific thinking, physical development, art/music and indoor/outdoor play.

This is an English taught curriculum that prepares our children for Kindergarten. Throughout the year we take field trips and have a Dental Hygienist and a Yoga Instructor from our own community who come to extend their knowledge to our children about their health and nutrition.

Our program for the two year olds are on Thursdays from 9:45-11:45am; three year olds meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00-11:55am; four year olds/Pre-K meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00-11:55am. We also have a Summer Program during the month of July.

Our goal is for the children to become confident, responsible and independent learners in our Greek Orthodox Christian faith, culture and community. For further information, please contact the Church Office.

George D. Pamas Memorial Basketball ProgramBy George Papazicos

This summer marked the fourteenth consecutive year our community has held a Summer Basketball League in memory of George D. Pamas. The games were exciting and extremely competitive with the team from St. Paraskevi eventually winning the Championship. Michael Lembo and his organizing committee did a great job balancing the St. Paul teams and running the league throughout the summer.

The Annual Dinner was held at Jonathan’s Restaurant in Garden City Park. At the dinner, George Pappas shared his memories of both George Pamas and John Koukos and then following he presented the 2012 John A. Koukos Memorial Award to John’s son, Andrew. This Award is presented each year to the Summer League participant who best exemplifies John’s qualities of loyalty, sportsmanship, leadership and athletic ability and Andrew was selected as this year’s very worthy recipient. In addition, Kay Pamas presented the George D. Pamas Memorial Cup to Father Dimitri Moraites who represented the St. Paraskevi team. The Cup, which has been engraved with the names of the members of the Championship Team, will be on display in our trophy case.

Over the years the program has always been self-sufficient and, through the funds it receives from its participants and benefactors, it has been a generous donor to our community’s fundraisers – the Annual Festival, the Golf Outing, the Boy Scout Outing, the Annual Journal and the Christmas Card. In addition, donations by the program have enabled the Cathedral to purchase portable baskets and wall mats used in the gymnasium, upgrades to the microphone and speaker system in the Church and two new flower stands by the Shrine. The program purchased an Automated External Defibrillator for our community and sponsored the CPR and AED training of over 70 individuals. Just as important, many of the participants go on to serve the community in many ways.

The program was a major donor to Project Renaissance, the program that the Cathedral of St. Paul embarked on to maintain and preserve its facilities and also made a significant contribution last year to the Decorations Project in memory of Father Nicholas J. Magoulias who was a key supporter of the program for many years. This year, the Program made a gift to the Cathedral of two icon stand covers. Through the continued generosity of its participants and other benefactors, the program hopes to continue to assist our Cathedral for many years to come.

St. Paul’s Boy Scout Troop 568: Summer CampBy Louis Yeostros In May, the Troop #568 welcomed two new members who “bridged” over from the Cub Scout den, Georgios Cosmas and Angelo Demeris. In June all the Scouts and their fathers provided their help with the St.Paul’s Festival in many areas including supplies, the soda truck and cooking and cleanup. Father Panagioti’s blessing of the Troop, no doubt, ensured the perfect weather for Troop #568’s annual summer camping trip to Onteora Scout Camp in the Catskills. Fifteen boy scouts and nine dads spent the second week of July in the mountain camp enjoying the fresh air and cool night temperatures. The days were busy with the younger boys working on their merit badges which included swimming, canoeing, rifle shooting, archery, basketry, leather working and wilderness survival. A total of 45 merit badges were earned this summer. This summer’s camp was unique because of the induction of eight senior scouts and one adult into the Order of the Arrow, a fraternal group within the Scouts that bestows recognition on scouts and adult leaders as best exemplifying the ideals of Scouting. The candidate’s induction Ordeal is intended to emphasize service and self-sacrifice. For a 24 hour period the candidates maintain complete silence, sleep alone overnight and receive small amounts of food and perform camp work projects. Successful candidates are then welcomed as members in a formal induction ceremony. The new members of Order of the Arrow from Troop #568 are: Andrew Bandini, Harris Cherpelis, Harry Demeris, Yianni Flouskakos, Andrew Gavalas, Luke Germanakos, Savvas Papadopoulos and Dean Yeostros. The new adult member is Tom Flouskakos. Congratulations to all “kai se anotera”. Another highlight was the in-camp dinner night where each troop cooks at their campsite, inviting camp staff and other troops to join. Troop #568’s boys and fathers applied their food service expertise and presented a menu of souvlaki, sausages, venison steaks, roast turkey and pasta and meatballs. With an energized level of scout and parent involvement, the senior scout and adult leaders of Troop #568 have planned a busy Fall and Winter Season.

Cub Scout Court of Honor On Thursday May 17th, Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Den #568 held their annual Court of Honor, an end of year ceremony that recognizes the advancements in rank that the Cub Scouts have achieved. The highlight of the evening is a special “crossing over” ceremony to formally advance eligible Cub Scouts to the Boy Scouts. The following Cub Scouts advanced to their new ranks: To Wolf: Peter Papangelopoulos To Bear: Harris Cherpelis, and Ioakim MarinosTo 1st Year Webelo: Andreas Gavalas, Constantine Vasilakis and Stavros CherpelisTo 2nd Year Webelo: Yianni Daniil, Constantine Marinos, Alexander Menoudakos, George Pittas, and Chris Yannios Arrow of Light: Georgios Cosmas and Angelo Demeris advanced to the final rank of Cub Scouts by receiving their Arrow of Light. This achievement is commemorated by awarding of the Arrow of Light patch which is the only Cub Scout patch that can be worn by Boy Scouts. This was followed by the symbolic “crossing over” of Georgios and Angelo to the Boy Scouts. As per Troop #568 tradition, in the presence of family and friends, the boys took off their cub scout ranks and insignia (with the exception of the Arrow of Light) at one side of the troop’s mini-bridge. One at a time they crossed over the bridge to be formally welcomed into the Boy Scouts and given their new ranks and uniform insignias. Before convening to refreshments, Scoutmaster Peter Parras provided insight and reflection on the tireless efforts of the adult leaders of the Cub Scouts, Daisies and Boy Scouts. He attributed the renewal of the programs to their sacrifice of time, talent and treasure. For more information about St. Paul’s Scouting Programs, please contact Louis Yeostros for the Boy Scouts 516-358-5373, Cathy Marinos for the Cub Scouts 516-746-9353 and Tina Vasilakis for the Girls Scouts 516-746-2540.
