Wisconsin Magazine of History

Digitization Project By: Nancy Brewster

The Wisconsin Magazine of History is a quarterly publication published by the

Wisconsin Historical Society. The Demmer Library receives this magazine as part of its

membership in the Wisconsin Historical Society. We have the most recent issue on our

periodical shelves next to the circulation desk at the front of the library. We also have some

back issues available for check out. In looking at our list of back issues, I found that we

listed issues from 1999 to the current 2007 issue. However, we do not have all the issues

published during those years available at our library. But there is good news for those people who might be looking for some

of those history rich issues. Just this past month it was announced by the Wisconsin Historical Society, that the they would

be digitizing all 30,000 some pages of the Wisconsin Magazine of History. This digitization project is made possible through

a grant provided by Schoenleber Foundation of Milwaukee. Currently, volumes 1-35 have already been digitized and are

available for searching at www.wisconsinhistory.org/wmh/archives/search.aspx. As more pages are being added daily, going

back to the site often to re-enter your search is a good idea. What you didn’t find last week might be there this week.

Publication of the Wisconsin Magazine of History began in 1917 as a successor to the societies’ Wisconsin

Historical Collections. This collection is already available online at www.wisconsinhistory.org/whc. The

Wisconsin Historical Collections is particularly rich in WWI material, including social commentary and

letters from soldiers. There is even a letter from a German man giving his view of the war.

Online access to both of these Wisconsin history publications will provide a wealth of

information for the Wisconsin history buff. Check it out!

Well Known Author Dies

Author Sidney Sheldon died January 30, 2007 due to complications from pneumonia.

Sheldon was a unique individual. He had an award winning writing career in

Broadway theater, movies and television. It was not until he was 50 that he began writing

novels. He wrote over 15 novels which made regular appearances on the New York Times

best seller lists.

His best selling novels were about women who triumph in a hostile world of ruthless

men. Sheldon told a reporter when questioned about the popularity of his novels with

women: “I like to write about women who are talented and capable, but most important,

retain their femininity. Women have tremendous power -- their femininity, because men

can’t do without it.”

Did You Know…? The ampersand (&) was once a letter of the English alphabet.

Author’s Spotlight

Diane Mott Davidson

Page 3 Volume 8, Issue 2

Although beginning writing in 1963, Diane Mott Davidson did not actually begin

writing seriously until 1982. Mrs. Davidson, now famous for her culinary mystery

series starring Goldy the caterer, also began her married life not even knowing how

to cook!

Davidson gave up writing to study political science and art history. Following

her studies, she began a family and then her focus was on family and volunteer

work. In 1982, she began writing and joined the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers in

1987. It was not until 1988 that she actually sold her first novel. Mrs. Davidson

convinced her editor to allow her to include four original recipes in her book.

Somethig that was not unheard of, but also not being done at the time. Today, she

is as well known for her stories as her original recipes.

In 1990, she was named the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer of the Year. Many

of her novels have spent time of the New York Times and USA Today bestseller

lists.

Currently she is working on the next Goldy novel.

The Demmer Library Has the following

Diane Mott Davidson titles available in our collection:

The Cereal Murders The Grilling Season

Catering to Nobody Prime Cut The Last Suppers

Have No Fear...

The Captain Will Be Here!

DC Comics has tried many times to relaunch an old superhero; Captain Marvel. Sometimes

succesful, others not so much. This time DC is hoping that Jeff Smith will be the ticket to bring

back this well loved golden era superhero. Jeff Smith is known for his fantasy comic Bone. Bone

has won many awards and Smith is well known in the industry.

DC is hoping that history will repeat itself, as in the 40s and 50s the original Captain Marvel

outsold Superman. The catch phrase “Shazam” was started in these comics as it was the magic word that turned a young

boy into Captain Marvel.

The new series will begin with Shazam: Monster Society of Evil. It will begin this month and is both written and

illustrated by Jeff Smith. Smith is excited to take on this challenge and when asked about the direction of the new se-

ries he said “The story I want to tell is of an orphan boy who has no one, but by the end of the story has [found himself]

a family,” Smith said. “A strange family of talking tigers and old wizards. Instead of Batson just defeating enemies, it’s

fun to tell an actual story of a mission he can fulfill.”

SHE’S BACK!! Oprah’s Book Club Has Announced It’s Latest Book!

Oprah Winfrey has brought back to life her very popular book club after giving it a year’s

rest. A controversy and a showdown of sorts with author James Frey in relation to his memoir that her book club

featured last year prompted the talk show host take a break from the book club business.

The revival of the Book Club has readers, publishers and bookstores excited. She has chosen an autobiography written by

Sidney Poitier: The Measure of A Man. For more information on Oprah’s Book Club logon to oprah.com.

Poitier’s Publisher has this to say about his book:

“In this candid spiritual memoir, legendary actor Sidney Poitier reflects on life itself as he reveals the spiritual depth, passion,

and intellectual fervor that has driven his remarkable life. Poitier credits his childhood of poverty on idyllic Cat Island in the

Bahamas for equipping him with the unflinching sense of self-worth, family values, and simple ethics that he

has never since surrendered and that have dramatically shaped his world.

Just a few years after his introduction to indoor plumbing and the automobile, Poitier broke countless

barriers to launch a pioneering career portraying important, dignified characters in some of the most morally

significant films of the late 20th century. Drawing on his personal journey, Poitier explores such themes as

sacrifice and commitment, pride and humility, rage and survival, and paying the price for artistic integrity.

His engaging memoir spans a time in history from Jim Crow segregation through the early Civil Rights

conflicts to present-day cultural struggles and spiritual seeking. Poitier shares his provocative thoughts on

racism in Hollywood, consumerism and the media, child-rearing, illness and mortality, honoring a higher

consciousness, and realizing how fully a part of “the grand scheme” each of us is. This book is a powerful

testament to the rewards of being true to one’s self, acting passionately on one’s convictions, and boldly

walking on the edge.”

Call the Demmer Library or logon to our online catalog to get on the list for this gripping story!
