Ismael Miranda has long been known as a pretty boy.

And he is just fine with it.“El Niño Bonito de la Salsa,” as the salsero

Miranda has long been known, is a direct reference to the glory days of the genre.

The singer and composer, who continues inspiring generations, is ready to celebrate over 45 years of a storied career right here, in “El Condado de la Salsa,” at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts with Paquito Rivera and Andy Montañéz.

It is a career that saw Miranda take flight from the city’s East Village as a youngster playing conga on the Jerry Lewis’ Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, leading the charge on the Latin Boogaloo craze, founding his own record label, and traveling extensively through Latin America and Europe.

“I’m so thrilled, so very happy to celebrate 45 years in the music industry,” he exclaimed recently in an interview with The Bronx Free Press. “Four decades is a long time! I thank God and the people that have ridden along with me this on this journey.”

Born in Aguada, Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, Miranda fell in love with music as a child and recorded his first album in 1967, when he was just 17 years old.

Two years later, he joined the Fania All-Stars in 1969, and by 1973, he had formed his own band Orquesta Revelación. He recorded “Así se compone un son” under the Fania record label, and was quickly christened “El Niño Bonito de la Salsa.”

Despite making noise about an early

international tours, and is now preparing to play to a loyal constituency of fans at Lehman.

Miranda credited his longevity to his connection with fans, who he considers an extended family.

He is still as full of energy on stage as when he first began to play, because he has kept himself true to his roots and to his feelings.

“The reason I’m still able to play my music is that I haven’t changed the direction of my work,” he said. “I haven’t betrayed my music and I believe that the people appreciate that. I play music for el bailador (the dancer). I play traditional music. I’ve seen tons of artists changing all the time, reinventing themselves. But for me, the rule is very simple- just do what you do better, focus on that.”

Miranda, 67, promises his fans a memorable night in which he will sing a diverse selection of hits from his vast repertoire, which includes hit songs such as “Maria Luisa” and “Cipriano Armenteros”.

He explains that the playlist was created by the fans.

“I had a radio promotion where the fans were able to tell me the songs that they want to hear,” he explained. “That is how we came up with this list. If one of their favorites is missing, I’m ready to sing acapella.”

Miranda is currently on tour alternating guest stars.

When asked about what inspired him to team up with Paquito Rivera and Andy Montañéz, he explains that they, and other co-stars such as Tito Nieves and Jose Alberto “El Canario,” are more than colleagues or friends, but are “true family.”

El cantante y compositor, quien continua inspirando generaciones, está listo para celebrar más de 45 años de una ilustre carrera aquí en “El Condado de la Salsa,” en el Lehman Center for the Performing Arts con Paquito Rivera y Andy Montañéz.

Es una carrera que vio a Miranda tomar vuelo desde el East Village de la ciudad como un joven tocando conga en el Teletón de Distrofia Muscular de Jerry Lewis. Como líder de la carga de la locura Latin Boogaloo fundó su propio sello discográfico, y viajó extensamente por América Latina y Europa.

Daisy Vargas stood in front of her house in Castle Hill, just

steps from the driveway.

It was empty - and will likely remain that way for some time.

Vargas and her husband Samuel have had to sell their cars to pay off their bills.

Four generations of the Vargas family inhabit the house, and a year ago, another family moved in, allowing for an additional source of revenue.

Vargas’s son has had to drop out of college so he could get a full-time job as a police officer and help his family with the bills.

It might come as a surprise to some that Vargas, a payroll manager for the Batali and Bastianich Hospitality Group, co-owned by renowned chef Mario Batali, would be in such financial straits.

But even women with perfect credit can fall victim to the banks.

Vargas has spent nearly 3 ½ years grappling with HSBC Bank in what is called the “shadow docket”, a limbo in which homeowners are left languishing as they wait for their mandatory foreclosure conferences.

Every homeowner is entitled to a foreclosure conference with the bank to see if a deal can be made to avoid losing the home.

But the shadow docket is possible when banks cannot draw up an attorney affirmation that confirms that the bank’s (or banks’, if there are multiple banks involved, as is the case with the Vargas mortgage) documents are all legally sound. Only after the attorney affirmation is produced can a Right to Judicial

Vargas purchased her house in 1995. All was going well until her husband, a

corrections officer, was attacked on the job at Riker’s Island in 2009.

After four surgeries, he was unable to work, and is currently on disability.

He currently receives only 50 percent of what his paycheck once was.

Forecasting financial woes ahead, but not in the red yet, Vargas applied for a modification on her monthly mortgage payments.

She sent in the application, and was told to wait three months for a response.

In the meantime, Vargas kept up with her payments.

Three months later, the bank said they had not been able to get to Vargas’s application, and that she had to send in a new one.

In the meantime, the Vargas family sold many of their possessions, and her son dropped out of college to get a job and help the family make ends meet.

When HSBC finally offered a modification, it was to increase the family’s monthly payments.

The financial pressures mounted, and in the fall of 2009, Vargas was late making a payment.

As soon as funds were available, she went to pay her mortgage at her local banking center, but they refused to take her money.

Then she sent a certified check, which was also returned to her.

A week later, she got notification that the bank was going to foreclose on the house.

“I freaked. I had only missed one payment,”

El hijo de Vargas ha tenido que abandonar la universidad para poder conseguir un trabajo a tiempo completo como oficial de policía y ayudar a su familia con los gastos.

Puede ser una sorpresa para algunos que Vargas, gerente de nómina del grupo Batali y Bastianich Hospitality, cuyo copropietario es el reconocido Chef Mario Batali, estaría en tales aprietos financieros.

Pero incluso las mujeres con crédito perfecto pueden ser víctima de los bancos.

El shadow docket es posible cuando los bancos no pueden elaborar una afirmación de abogado en la que se confirma que los documentos del banco (o de los bancos, si

hay varios involucrados, como es el caso de la hipoteca de Vargas) son legales. Sólo después de que se produce la afirmación del abogado puede ser enviado un Derecho a la Intervención Judicial (RJI por sus siglas en inglés) a los propietarios de las viviendas.

Cuando un propietario recibe un RJI, también recibe información valiosa sobre las organizaciones que les pueden dar asesoría legal y financiera.

Sin el RJI, la reunión no se puede programar.Si no hay reunión, el banco técnicamente no

puede ejecutar la hipoteca de una casa, pero sí retrasar el proceso colocando a los propietarios de viviendas en el shadow docket, que también permite a los bancos generar beneficios considerables al aumentar los intereses y las comisiones.

Tal como está ahora, Vargas debe a HSBC más de $60,000 dólares de intereses de los honorarios devengados en los tres años que ella estuvo en el shadow docket.

Aunque se las arregló para salvar su casa, como un resultado directo de la difícil experiencia,

Vargas ya no tiene historial de crédito, algo que es difícil de manejar.

“Siempre le dije a mi hijo que su calificación de crédito es su vida. Te abre las puertas”.

Vargas compró su casa en 1995. Todo iba bien hasta que su marido, agente de

correccional, fue atacado en el trabajo en la isla Rikers en 2009.

Después de cuatro cirugías, él no podía trabajar y actualmente se encuentra discapacitado.

En la actualidad sólo recibe el 50 por ciento de lo que era su sueldo.

Without the RJI, the conference cannot be scheduled.

If no conference ever happens, the bank cannot technically foreclose on a house, but instead can delay the process by placing

homeowners in the shadow docket, which also allows banks to generate sizeable profits by increasing interest and fees.

As it stands now, Vargas owes HSBC over $60,000 of interest in fees accrued over the three years she was held in the shadow docket.

While she managed to save her house, as a direct result of the ordeal, Vargas now has no credit rating, something that is hard to cope with.

In any hotly contested political race, candidates typically relish

the opportunity to reach a large segment of likely voters at a single event.

Those vying to become New York City’s next mayor received that chance this past Tues., Aug. 6th at Hunter College, at an expansive town hall sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the Hispanic Federation, the Asian American Federation, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO).

An audience of approximately 1,000 people gathered in the Hunter auditorium for the event, which allowed both Democratic and Republican candidates to get their message across to a sizeable cross-section of voters.

The town hall featured mayoral hopefuls Sal Albanese, Adolfo Carrión, John A. Catsimatidis, Bill de Blasio, Joe Lhota, John Liu, George McDonald, Erick Salgado, Bill Thompson and Anthony Weiner. Christine Quinn was invited, but did not attend.

It is estimated that Hispanic, Asian, and African American voters age 50 and above will account for about 47 percent of ballots cast in the upcoming mayoral election.

“The multicultural communities are no longer a minority, and are on the way to becoming a majority of the vote in NYC,” remarked Beth Finkel, New York State

Director of AARP.Research also shows that approximately

half of voters in New York City are AARP members.

As Carrión remarked to the town hall crowd, “This audience is a sweet spot for politicians.”

The event was moderated by Mariela

Salgado of Univision 41; candidates were questioned by a panel that included Carolina Leid of WABC-TV, Enrique Teutelo of Univision Noticias 41, Xian Biu of SinoTV and Herb Bond of New York Amsterdam News and City College.

With more than 860,000 registered voters in New York City identified as Latino, the

candidates were asked how they would relate to the Latino community if elected.

Catsimatidis, owner of the Gristedes Foods grocery store chain, boasted that 50% of his employees and 70% of his management team are Latino.

somewhere else. My family immigrated from Taiwan when I was five years old, looking for the same thing countless families have, including those from Ireland.

Opportunity.Because that’s the sacred promise New

York City made with us. Come here. Work hard. Dream big. And then work even harder. And if you do all that, you have the

opportunity to make good. That’s the New York City we believed in. And that’s the New York City I’m fighting to bring back.

Some may call my bold vision and plan for New York as drastic. I say recalibrating our City’s priorities is long overdue.

Time to put our City back on the right track.

When New Yorkers elected me as Comptroller in 2009 and granted me the privilege to serve, I promised to work everyday for the people.

In just under four years, I am proud of my record of deliverables: rooted out waste, fraud and abuse from the City’s coffers (including CityTime); produced over $4B in cost savings; amassed over 50% in cumulative returns for the NYC Pension Funds, launched unprecedented transparency into NYC’s $70B budget, and more.

But when you go after powerful people and rich corporations, they’re going to come after you. They have certainly thrown every possible curveball my way.

Two Bronx high school students just got their dream jobs—

testing games for Nickelodeon.

At last week’s Bronx Tech Meetup, Majora Carter announced a budding partnership with the cable television network.

Quality control jobs in the gaming division had been outsourced overseas, but now they are slowly coming back to the United States.

“And guess where their first two opportunities and first two jobs are going to happen? It’s going to be young people from right here in the South Bronx,” she said.

Two students from Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School will be working in game development quality assurance at Nickelodeon.

Both participated in an after-school program developed by Startup Box: South Bronx. The program, co-founded by Carter, teaches young people tech skills, including how to code and make basic game applications.

“It’s just a small pilot program but we’re starting and I’m really proud that it happened here,” Carter said.

Nickelodeon quality assurance people will train the students in quality assurance techniques.

“I’m very excited to be helping out in a small way with all the things that Majora is doing in the South Bronx,” said Nate Altschul, Director of Nickelodeon’s Game Development.

About 100 people attended last week’s Meetup, held on Wed. Aug. 7th, at the

Sunshine Bronx Business Incubator in Hunt’s Point.

It was one of several held across the city by the NYC Digital Team.

Rachel Sterne Haot, the city’s Chief Digital Officer, is making the rounds of each borough.

Her listening tour is designed to find out what residents want in the city’s new digital

road map, and on Wednesday, it brought her to the Bronx.

Local residents said they want more—more tech jobs, greater connectivity and education.

But they also wondered: who is going to pay for it?

Many called for more programming classes and STEM education. They also noted that

some Bronx schools and libraries still don’t have computers.

Others said universal connectivity is necessary for the Bronx to be competitive.

John Mangual, a freelance data visualization consultant, said he’d like the Bronx to have a similar concentration of tech activities found in Manhattan—including hackathons.

“I don’t see enough of that in outer boroughs. It’s all in one place,” he said. “Why is it we always have to go into Manhattan for everything?”

Some suggestions weren’t borough-specific. The city offers more data than ever before, but much it isn’t interactive—including information about 311 calls or New York Police Department (NYPD) statistics.

Others noted that greater access to information also raised privacy concerns.

Doni Walker Santiago, an attorney, said going from a closed government to an open government is a transition into unexplored territory.

“Now people can go and sit in on Family Court sessions the same way they can sit in on Criminal Court sessions – which is a huge, big deal,” she said. “We don’t know what to expect, so we are trying to define it. We have to look into the real-world applications of some of this.”

Haot said the Meetup exceeded her expectations.

“The quality and diversity of ideas is exactly what we were looking for,” she said. “Now we’re going to put this into practice and form the new plan.”

Dos estudiantes de secundaria del Bronx acaban de lograr su trabajo

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the

various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

On Sat., Jul. 27th, Justin Formal, better known as Baron Ambrosia of BronxNet’s television show Bronx Flavor, swam the length of the Bronx River.

Beginning at the border of Yonkers by Nereid Avenue and concluding at the Soundview Lagoon by Harding Park, the 7.5 mile journey was completed in about 7 hours.

A crowd of family, friends and supporters enjoyed music while they awaited Ambrosia’s arrival.

At the first glimpse of one of the two boats that accompanied him, they cheered and snapped photographs of the historic event.

Upon arrival, he was greeted by handshakes, smiles, kisses and hugs.

Still pumped with energy, Ambrosia shared a few words.

Among the many people and organizations he thanked was the Bronx River Alliance for its work.

He also expressed surprise at how clean the River was at different points throughout his journey.

Bringing awareness to the improved

Paralegal por más de 17 años hasta diciembre del 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.

Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero hacer a mis compañeros residentes concientes e informados de cuan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y como ofrecer una mano amiga a nuestro ambiente”.

De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido más viva”.

El sábado, 27 de julio, Justin Formal, mejor Ttconocido como Baron Ambrosia del programa de televisión en BronxNet’s, Bronx Flavor, nadó la longitud del Río Bronx.

Comenzando en la orilla de Yonkers por la Avenida Nereid y terminando en la Laguna Soundview por el Parque Harding, el viaje de 7.5 millas fue completado en unas 7 horas.

Un grupo de familiares, amigos y seguidores disfrutaron de música mientras esperaban la llegada de Ambrosia.

Al primer vistazo de uno de los dos botes que lo acompañaban, vitorearon y tomaban fotografías del histórico evento.

A su llegada, fue recibido con apretones de mano, sonrisas, besos y abrazos.

Aun lleno de energía, Ambrosia compartió algunas palabras. Entre las muchas personas y organizaciones agradeció a la Alianza del Río Bronx por su trabajo. También expresó sorpresa de cuan limpio estaba el río en diferentes puntos a lo largo de su viaje.

Llevando conciencia a las mejoradas

Linda Cox, directora ejecutiva de la Alianza del Río Bronx, explica, “aunque el río se ve mejor cada día, todavía no está lo suficiente limpio para nadar. Esperamos que las personas vengan y disfruten del río, y ayuden a cuidarlo, pero no a nadar en el”.

Ambrosia pasó por meses de preparaciones incluyendo ejercicio, dieta y vacunas. Se aplicó aceites y hierbas para protegerse. La natación fue llevada a cabo con mucha precaución. También fue acompañado por un paramédico.

Algunas estaban preocupados de que el mensaje fuera opacado por la fanfarria que rodeo su natación y algunos piensen que ahora es seguro nadar en el Río Bronx.

No lo es.Felicitó a Ambrosia por su éxito, pero le

And given years of restoration efforts, the River is much cleaner.

But it is, however, not suitable for swimming.

When it rains, raw sewage is released into the River, as well as other waterways, causing fecal contamination.

Linda Cox, Executive Director of the Bronx River Alliance, explains, “Although the River looks better every day, it is not yet clean enough for swimming. We hope people will come out and enjoy the river, and help care for it, but not swim in it.”

Ambrosia’s swim was carried out with much precaution.

He went through months of preparations including exercise, diet and medical shots. He applied oils and herbs to protect himself, and he was also accompanied by a paramedic.

Some were worried that message was overshadowed by the fanfare surrounding his swim, and that some might think it is now safe to swim in the Bronx River.

Again, it is not.I commend Ambrosia for his success, but

I urge you not to enter the River. There are plenty of safe ways to enjoy our

River: canoeing, fishing, kayaking, but not swimming. While that day may soon come, we will need to redouble our efforts to continue to clean up and care for the River.

Rodríguez was one of 13 professional peloteros implicated in solicitation of services from Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic based

in Florida. Among the other players are Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers, Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers and Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli.

Rodríguez, who previously admitted to using steroids from 2001 to 2003, allegedly used testosterone, human growth hormone and performance-enhancing drugs over the course of several years, said Major League Baseball (MLB) in a statement.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has a new nickname:

“La peliroja peligrosa.”

The “Dangerous Redhead” was christened as such at a meet-and-greet with supporters from the Dominican Women’s Coalition (DWC), composed of women from the Bronx and Northern Manhattan.

The group gathered at the Rio II Gallery at 135th Street and Riverside Drive this past Thurs., Aug. 8th.

Speaker Quinn has been endorsed by a number of women’s groups in her run for mayor, but the DWC has the distinction of being the first.

“When I’m mayor, I’ll never forget the first women that stuck with me,” said Quinn, adding that the women in the coalition represented the city’s future.

“She’s the one candidate who has taken the time to talk to us—the women of uptown,” said Rosa Laverne, a coalition member.

Quinn’s supporters are looking forward to making history.

Should she be elected, she would be the city’s first woman mayor, as well as its first openly gay mayor.

“The city of New York is more than 200 years old, and in its entire history has never had a woman mayor,” noted Rosita Romero, Executive Director of the Dominican Women’s Development Center. “We have a historic opportunity.”

“It’s not going to get any closer than this,” she added. “We are convinced she will win.”

While neither Speaker Quinn nor her allies

brushed off the possibility of a runoff in the highly contested race, they were indefatigable about winning—runoff or not.

“However many elections we have to win, we’ll win them all,” said Speaker Quinn, eliciting cheers.

The women of DWC also prepped Quinn on their plans for her at Sunday’s Dominican Day Parade. It was revealed to her that she should wear blue during the parade, while the members of the coalition would wear white.

“But I don’t have a blue dress!” she

protested.“You can borrow mine,” said Zenaida

Méndez, the President of the New York State chapter of the National Women’s Organization (NOW), who sported a cobalt blue dress.

“I don’t think I can pull it off like you, Zenaida,”quipped Quinn.

But Méndez was prepared to do much more than just lend Quinn her dress. She spent the rest of the evening confirming attendance for the Dominican Day parade, and urging attendees to vote in the primary to avoid a runoff.

“No runoff. Remember that,” was her directive.

Méndez figures that if women were to come out in full force on Election Day in support of Quinn, a runoff can be avoided, as 62 percent of the electorate is women.

But the candidate’s policies shouldn’t just appeal to women, she said.

“She’s running on the people’s platform, and the family platform,” argued Méndez.

Beyond the warm reception, Quinn also received a butterfly pin from Auretnisse Santos of the Hermanas Mirabal Family Center and Child Care Network, Inc.

La portavoz del Concejo de la ciudad Christine Quinn tiene un nuevo apodo:

“la pelirroja peligrosa”.

La “pelirroja peligrosa” fue bautizada como tal en una reunión para saludar a las partidarias de la Coalición de Mujeres Dominicanas (DWC por sus siglas en inglés), integrada por mujeres del Bronx y del Norte de Manhattan.

El grupo se reunió en la Galería Río II, en la calle 135 y Riverside Drive el pasado jueves 8 de agosto.

La portavoz Quinn ha sido respaldada por varios grupos de mujeres en su carrera a la alcaldía, pero la DWC tiene la distinción de ser el primero.

“Cuando sea alcalde, nunca olvidaré a las primeras mujeres que me acompañaron”, dijo Quinn, añadiendo que las mujeres de la coalición representan el futuro de la ciudad.

“Ella es la única candidata que se ha tomado el tiempo para hablar con nosotras, las mujeres del norte del condado”, dijo Rosa Laverne, miembro de la coalición.

Los partidarios de Quinn esperan hacer historia.

vuelta.“Aunque tengamos muchas elecciones, las

ganaremos todas”, dijo la portavoz, provocando aplausos.

Las mujeres de DWC también prepararon a Quinn sobre sus planes para ella en el desfile del día dominicano del domingo. Se reveló que ella debe usar azul durante el desfile, mientras que los miembros de la coalición se vestirán de blanco.

Pero Méndez estaba dispuesta a hacer mucho más que simplemente prestarle su vestido a Quinn. Pasó el resto de la noche confirmando asistencias para el desfile e instando a los asistentes a votar en las elecciones primarias para evitar una segunda vuelta.

“No a la segunda vuelta. Recuerden eso” fue su directriz.

Méndez considera que si las mujeres salieran a demostrar su fuerza en la jornada electoral apoyando a Quinn, la segunda vuelta se podría evitar, un 62 por ciento del electorado son mujeres.

Pero las políticas de la candidata no sólo deben atraer a las mujeres, dijo.

Impulsando la autoestima de su hijo

School is just around the corner, and as we get ready to stock up on pencils and notebooks, we also need to decide how

to best support our children emotionally as they resume their academic and social routines. With bullying stats going up, and suicide on the rise among the younger generation, how can parents support their child’s self-esteem?

“Mommy, I’m ugly,” she said, with virtually the same certainty as when she’s talking about the weather or a homework assignment.

She was so sure this was true. She went on to talk about the names kids

called her, apparently teasing her about her hair, nails and how once, a little boy said “Yuck!”about her.

This was a little boy she liked. Now, I’ve warned her that kids can

be mean, and her father and I remind her constantly how beautiful she is—both inside and out.

But for a kid, it could often feel like that just isn’t enough.

Just last year, an 11-year old Bronx girl committed suicide, leaving behind a trail of text messages to friends describing how unhappy she was. This year, unfortunately, another victim also took her life – she was 9 years old.

Experts are concerned that this might be part of a growing trend wherein younger kids, subject to greater social pressures at an earlier age, harm themselves, or worse.

It can feel like a pitched battle for parents – fighting a million, real-life instances of poor behavior on the part of peers, frenemies, etc. with just the resources available to those who are supposed to love their kids unconditionally.

That’s my daughter’s take.When we speak to her beauty and

strength, she often replies, “You’re supposed to say that.”

So, we’ve developed a three-step strategy to help her along the way.

Emphasizing these points from time to time, we hope, will help her develop the inner strength she needs to succeed.

What are some of the ways you boost your child’s self-esteem?

Eat Well and Get Moving

Research already shows that physical activity and healthy eating help people feel better. That goes for your kids as well. So why not pack a few fruits, water and go for a family hike or run around the city? There are several great routes in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx. Teach Them Something New

Who doesn’t feel good when they learn

and master a new skill? There are lots of ways to boost your child’s self-esteem with activities in the city. Have they tried tennis at the local park? How about a little gardening at the New York Botanical Garden? If your child is down, try out a new activity that could shed light on a skill set they never thought they had. Learning about how the world works, for them, begins with your encouragement.

Be a Good, Positive ExampleYou’re the best

example your kid’s got. Do you remember the saying, “Monkey see, monkey do?” Our little monkeys model our behavior and attitudes. How you feel about yourself and allow others to treat you is directly communicated to your children with verbal and nonverbal cues. If someone is making you feel good about yourself, and your child is a witness to that, great! But if not, how can we expect him or her to understand what it means to have a healthy dosage of self-esteem when we’re surrounding ourselves with negativity?

Of course, if you notice prolonged signs of depression or expressions of a sense of worthlessness, do seek a professional to support you and your family.

But the point is always be your child’s top supporter.

Be the balance and sounding board they need.

Our children are strong, beautiful and capable of awesome things.

Reminding them often is as much a duty as it is a privilege.

Pero si no ¿cómo podemos esperar que él o ella entienda lo que significa tener una dosis saludable de autoestima cuando nosotros mismos estamos rodeados de negatividad?

Por supuesto, si usted nota signos prolongados de depresión o expresiones de un sentimiento de falta de valor, busque a un profesional para que le ayude a usted y a su familia.

Pero el punto es ser siempre el mayor seguidor de su hijo.

Kay Excell ha estado ocupada marinando, sazonando y ‘Tweeting’.

Espera hacer un trato con el escritor Sam Sifton del New York Times, quien rutinariamente ha cubierto comida y cocina para el periódico.

Excell estaba un poco molesta cuando Sifton escribió una receta en el 2011 de Cocido de Rabo Jamaiquino que fue adoptada de la Panadería Golden Krust Caribbean, una cadena de restaurantes.

Excell le escribió a Sifton por “Twitter” acerca de su elección y recibió una respuesta.

El le pidió una receta.Pero ella todavía le está dando vueltas.“Vamos a ver”, dijo Excell. “Le dije que

teníamos que llegar a un acuerdo”.Como quizás una revisión de su nuevo lugar,

Mighty Meaty, el cual hizo su debut este verano en la Plaza de Mercado en la Calle 125 y el Boulevard Adam Clayton Powell.

Ahí, Excell ha estado ofreciendo grandes porciones de carne tierna en un pan de coco casero.

La carne es una pasión para Excell, quien recuerda una niñez inmersa en aromas de la cocina de su bisabuela, donde la fragancia del ajo, cebollas, tomillo, cebollines, algunas veces apio, y pimientos flotaban libremente.

La embriagadora combinación es utilizada en las cocinas jamaiquinas en la isla y más allá para infundir las carnes con el sabor caribeño.

“Me recuerda todo lo que amo en la vida”, explicó Excell.

Y hay hasta opciones para aquellos que prefieren quedarse con los vegetales: habichuelas al curry en mantequilla con ‘callaloo’ es uno.

Pero cualquiera sea la elección, el producto local fresco es la preferencia de Excell.

“Se que si no lo compro y no lo apoyo, los agricultores dejaran de venir”, dijo ella.

Ella busca su producto de Urban Garden, un jardín urbano en Harlem; la Plaza de Mercado en SoHA Square y la Calle 123 y el Boulevard Adam Clayton Powell; y el Mercado Wild Olive, donde adquiere muchas de sus frutas y vegetales de fincas del área tri estatal.

Hay algunos ingredientes esencialmente jamaiquinos que los agricultores locales podrían tener dificultad en suministrarle que ella no pasa por alto: leche de coco y ‘red stripe’ son algunos de los ingredientes.

Ingredients• 3 Chicken breasts cut into cubes • Salt and pepper to taste• Cumin to taste • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil• ¼ Red onion, diced • ½ Red pepper, diced • ½ Green pepper, diced • ½ cup Zucchini, diced• ½ cup Yellow squash, diced • 2 Garlic cloves, minced • 1 teaspoon Saffron • 1 tablespoon Smoked paprika powder • 8 Fresh asparagus • 2 cups Quinoa• 3-4 cups Low sodium chicken or vegetable stock• Fresh cilantro to tastePreparation - First, season chicken breast with salt, pepper

and cumin to taste. Heat the olive oil in a deep skillet or “paellera” and stir-fry the pieces of chicken until they look golden brown.

- Add the onion, red and green pepper, zucchini and yellow squash and continue stir frying for about 3 minutes.

- Add the garlic, saffron and smoked paprika and continue cooking for about 2 more minutes.

- Add the quinoa, chicken or vegetable stock and mix well, cook over medium heat until all theliquid has evaporated. Lower the temperature to low, cover and cook for another 15 to 25 minutes.

- Add the quinoa and stock, stir well and cook at a medium high fl ame until the liquid evaporates.

- Cook the asparagus in boiling water for about 1 minute then cool quickly in cold water with ice, remove asparagus from cold water and drain well.

Quinoa paella with chicken breast

and vegetables Ingredientes

• 3 pechugas de pollo cortadas en cuadritos• Sal y pimienta a gusto• Comino a gusto• 1 cucharada Aceite de oliva a gusto• ¼ Cebolla roja, cortada en cuadritos• ½ Pimiento rojo, cortado en cuadritos• ½ Pimiento verde, cortado en cuadritos• ½ taza Calabacín, cortado en cuadritos• ½ taza Squash amarillo, cortado en cuadritos• 2 cucharadas Ajo, molido • 1 cucharadita Azafrán • 1 cucharada Pimentón ahumado• 8 Espárragos frescos• 2 tazas Quínoa• 3-4 tazas Caldo de pollo o vegetales, bajo en sodio• Cilantro fresco a gusto

Preparación - Sazona las pechugas con sal, pimienta y comino a gusto.

Calienta el aceite de oliva en una sartén honda o paellera y sofríe los trozos de pechuga hasta que estén dorados.

- Agrega la cebolla, pimientos rojo y verde, calabacín y squash amarillo y continúa sofriendo alrededor de 3 minutos.

- Agrega el ajo, azafrán, pimentón ahumado y sofríe de 1 a 2 minutos más.

- Añade el quínoa y el caldo, mezcle bien y cocina a fuego me-diano alto hasta que el líquido se evapore. Baje la temperatura a fuego bajo, tape y cocine por 15 a 25 minutos.

- Cocine los espárragos en agua hirviendo con sal por 1 minuto y luego enfrié rápidamente en agua con hielo. Una vez fríos retire del agua, escurra y sazone a gusto con sal y pi-mienta.

Una vez la paella esta lista decore con cilantro fresco y los espárragos.

She also unveiled a pilot program to provide subsidized childcare loans to middle income families with children between the ages of 2 and 4 who are earning between $80,000 and $200,000 and have a credit score of 620. The loans are to be offered at a 6 percent rate. Subsidized child care is already available to low-income families.

“There are a lot of situations and issues that need to be addressed, especially for minorities and for women,” said Amaryllis León, a visual artist and DWC member.

Leon noted that the issues of affordable housing and the expansion of child care are particularly critical for women who are single mothers.

It was not always clear-cut for León who she would support.

“I might have considered Weiner, but I’m disillusioned for obvious reasons,” said León. He had a lot of great potential, but he blew it.”

Event organizer Quenia Abreu, President and CEO of The New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce, compared choosing a mayor with choosing a candidate for any job.

“Are you going to hire somebody because you like them, or are you going to hire someone with experience?” she queried. “You want someone with a proven track record, and to me that’s her. The fact that she’s a woman is the icing on the cake.”

Shani Romero, daughter of Rosita, is excited about the prospect of history being made.

“It would be great to see a woman in power,” she said. “We’re on the rise. It’s good to see a woman stepping up, and to see women supporting her.”

He stated, “I want to be the mayor of all of New York City – white, African American, Latino, everyone.”

Affordable housing was also a topic touched on by several of the candidates.

McDonald, who founded The Doe Fund, an organization that assists the homeless, said that the new mayor needs to build at least 75,000 affordable housing units.

Carrión agreed, “On day one of a Carrión administration, we would declare an affordable housing emergency.”

Weiner was critical of the Bloomberg a d m i n i s t r a t i o n ’s handling of fines and inspections for small and immigrant-owned businesses.

He described his idea for the city to use mobile vans that would allow store owners to settle tickets, process paperwork or even challenge fines on the spot, without the need to close their shop.

“All you need on the van is an inspector and a stenographer, and it can be done,” said Weiner. “Don’t make the store owner go downtown to deal with the violation, and possibly lose a day of work.”

The panel and moderator questioned the candidates on whether ID cards should be issued to undocumented immigrants.

“We need to be a humane and compassionate city to all immigrants,” said Carrión.

Lhota cited the cities of Oakland and Houston, who provided immigrants with ID cards, which also double as prepaid debit cards. He said the same system could be viable in New York City.

“Not only would it provide one form of ID, it would allow them to participate in the economy,” he explained.

Liu made reference to his own immigrant origins, as he quipped, “I was made in Taiwan, as they say.”

He told the crowd that he thought ID cards should be issued at the state level for all New Yorkers.

“When immigrants do better, New York does better,” Liu said.

Candidates were also questioned about the controversial topic of stop-and-frisk, and whether the practice has any merit.

Salgado said he felt that the real issue was inadequate number of police officers, and vowed to grow the city’s police force and also increase its training.

“There aren’t enough cops in our communities,” he commented.

“Searching citizens needs to be done constitutionally, not based on racial profiling,” said de Blasio. “We care about

stopping crime, but we want fairness, we want respect.”

A tense moment took place when candidates Weiner and McDonald, who have sparred at other events, had an exchange in which it appeared that Weiner referred derisively to McDonald, 69, as “Grandpa”.

The encounter prompted a response from Finkel the following day.

“AARP found some of yesterday’s comments regarding age unfortunate, especially at a time when, according to a new AARP survey, nearly one quarter of New York’s 50+ voters say they or a family member have experienced unwelcome comments about their age and nearly half are concerned about age discrimination. A person’s age should not be a factor in politics, or anything else,” she said.

But attendees at the town hall seemed enthusiastic about getting to know the candidates, and many remarked that they felt the discussion had been largely substantive.

Carol Oliva said she attended the forum to compare their stance on various issues, such as affordable housing and health care.

“It’s great to be able to see them all in one place,” she commented.

Marjorie, a Manhattan voter, said that New Yorkers are fortunate to have so many candidates to choose from in the mayoral race.

“It proves that the state of New York City politics is very vibrant,” she said.

But, as city resident James Diedrich remarked, the real test of the candidates’ worth will come after the election.

“What matters is that they can deliver what they promise,” he said.

The New York City District Council of Carpenters

(NYCDCC) Apprenticeship and Training Committee will conduct a recruitment from August 19, 2013 through August 30, 2013 for the following apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today: ten (10) linoleum, resilient, tile and carpet layer; fifteen (15) carpenter (pile driver/dockbuilder); and forty (40) carpenter. It is anticipated that additional openings may become available during the recruitment period.

To obtain an application, individuals must complete a NYCDCC lottery card with their name, address and Social Security number. Application lottery cards will be available at the New York City District Council of Carpenters JATC – Labor Technical College, 395 Hudson Street, New York, NY, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Only the applicant will be allowed to complete an application lottery card. All applicants must provide government-issued picture identification.

One hundred (100) application cards will be available for linoleum, resilient, tile and carpet layer apprenticeships; one hundred fifty (150) application cards will be available for carpenter (pile driver/dockbuilder)

The Committee requires that applicants:• Must be at least 17 years of age at time of

application.• Must have a high school diploma or general

equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) (original or stamped and sealed) at time of application.

• Must have proof of United States citizenship or have the legal right to work in the United States at time of application.

• Must be physically able to perform the work as determined by a physical examination. Within thirty (30) days of entrance into the apprenticeship program, all persons may be required to take a physical examination paid for by the JATC.

• Must report to a collection site designated by the JATC for a substance abuse screening, paid for by the JATC, within forty-eight (48) hours after a conditional offer has been extended for admission into the apprenticeship program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.

“I feel that when we are together on stage, we share a special magic,” he said. “I love that energy. That is why their names came up at once when I decided to work on these concerts. Bronx Council on the Arts receives National Endowment for the Arts grant

for The Bronx Memoir Project Grant one of 817 NEA Art Works grants totaling $26.3 million in funding nationwide

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa has announced that the Bronx Council on the Arts is one of 817 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The Bronx Writers Center, a core program of the Bronx Council on the Arts, is recommended for a $40,000 grant for The Bronx Memoir Project. The Bronx Memoir Project supports the creation, distribution and promotion of Bronx oral and written memoirs by Bronx residents. Emerging writers will conduct workshops and interviews throughout the borough, with a focus on the South Bronx, and work directly with seniors, teens and families to create, edit and record first person narratives of homecoming and home. Written memoirs will be collected and published in both paper and e-book and oral memoirs will be shared online. This project will map the memoirs by neighborhood, street and building and together they will represent the moving history of the borough. This project is scheduled to begin fall 2013. Acting Chairman Shigekawa said, "The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support these exciting and diverse arts projects that will take place throughout the United States. Vargas recalled.Though Vargas received a foreclosure

notification, she did not receive any information about a foreclosure conference. Vargas and her husband mentally prepared for the worst.

“We thought it was going to be the last Thanksgiving, the last Christmas, the last everything [at the house],” said Vargas.

But HSBC kept the family in limbo for three years—legally unable to foreclose since there was never a foreclosure conference.

Meanwhile, the Vargas family stayed put. Unable to make payments to the bank, they

saved the would-be payments in the event that HSBC finally gave them a foreclosure conference.

How could HSBC kick them out if they presented all of their payments? they reasoned.

But as the Vargas family saved their money, the bank kept tacking on fees.

Finally, after calling several different outlets for help, Vargas’ husband called Legal Services of New York (LS-NYC).

The family shared their story.Through the LS-NYC she learned that

multiple investors, not just HSBC Bank, had invested on her home.

A foreclosure conference was finally arranged, and three attorneys from three different banks were present.

When Vargas came to the meeting with all the mortgage payments from the last three years, they did not know what to do.

The judge on the case told the lawyers present that if they didn’t have answer for the Vargas family, she would hold them in contempt.

Two weeks later, a different lawyer returned to the court, and gave Vargas the news that they would not foreclose on the house.

What they did do, however, was tack on over $60,000 in interest and fees for the time the family spent on the shadow docket.

“I’m glad I have my home, but it’s a slap in the face,” Vargas said, shaking her head.

“They put us through the wringer.”Vargas spoke at length about her family’s

ordeal this past Thurs., Jul. 25th, and about new legislation that may well prevent similar circumstances for other homeowners.

The legislation, known as the “Certificate of Merit” bill, would close the conference loophole, and protect every homeowner’s right to an in-person, court supervised settlement conference within 90 days of entering foreclosure

The Certificate of Merit bill, approved

in the last legislative session by both the State Assembly and State Senate, would prevent banks from putting homeowners in the shadow docket by making them provide attorney affirmation up front, keeping the foreclosure conference from being delayed.

The legislation, however, still has to be signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The bill would affect approximately 14,000 New York State residents and 7,000 New York City residents presently in the “shadow docket”.

State Senator Jeffrey Klein and Assemblymember Helene Weinstein sponsored the bill, and were present, as was Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., and New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

“Deliberately irresponsible behavior by big banks has forced roughly 7,000 New York City homeowners into the type of legal limbo that our laws were designed to prevent,” said Senator Klein, who, in 2009 authored the legislation that guaranteed homeowners a right to a settlement conference prior to court proceedings. “The Certificate of Merit bill will finally change all of that, by guaranteeing every homeowner the right to a mortgage

“There’s this image of the Bronx that people don’t own houses. It’s important to me that professionals and homeowners stay in the Bronx,” said the Borough President.

Attorney General Schneiderman was optimistic that some of the $60,000 in fees could be reduced.

“Never stop talking to lawyers or paralegals,” he advised Vargas. “There is very little that is more important than keeping people inside their homes.”

“I do not want to see another person face what I went through,” said Vargas, close to tears as she recounted her long battle.

“These are people’s lives, and banks have to held accountable for their actions,” said Justin Haines, Director of Foreclosure Prevention Unit at the Bronx Division of Legal Services NYC.

While Vargas gets her own life on track, she is glad for one thing other than her house.

“I’m glad something came out of my venting.”

“It’s important that professionals and homeowners stay in the Bronx,” said Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr.

Rodríguez was slapped with a 211 day suspension, without pay. While the other players accepted the terms of a 50 game suspension, he is appealing the decision.

He is allowed to play during the appeal process, which could take up to 45 days.

“I have to defend myself. If I don’t defend myself, no one will,” he stated to the press upon his return to the Yankees roster on Mon., Aug. 5th when he joined teammates on a road game in Chicago.

The Yankees have been careful to distance the team from the investigation that resulted in A-Rod’s suspension. The team issued the following statement:

“The New York Yankees in no way instituted and/or assisted MLB in the direction of this investigation; or used the investigation as an attempt to avoid its responsibilities under a player contract; or did its medical staff fail to provide the appropriate standard of care to Alex Rodríguez.”

Still, despite the boos that have followed the player on and off the field, he has not been without his supporters.

On the streets surrounding Yankee Stadium, the epicenter of the team’s dynasty, there was a mixed cocktail of opinions and emotions, ranging from frustration and anger, to sympathy and hope.

“If he’s guilty, he should be punished,” said Mildred Hubbard, who said she first heard the news of A-Rod’s suspension from her husband.

“He’s a role model to many of these kids and if he did use these drugs it sends a very poor message,” she said.

Paola Amaya, a local high school senior, whiled away a few hours with friends at Macombs Dam Park, which sits on the site of the old Yankee Stadium.

The last game played there was Game 6 of the 2009 World Series, where Rodríguez scored two runs against the Phillies.

Amaya said she wouldn’t miss the Major League player.

“Yes, he’s a great baseball player, but someone in his position has to be more aware of his actions.”

Jorge Hernández, a cab driver who stopped in at a bodega a few blocks away from the stadium, said that players like Rodríguez were casualties of the industry.

“I believe he’s innocent,” said Hernández. “If so many other players did the same, it’s because we pushed them to it.”

Rodríguez’s suspension would be a loss for the Latino community, he added.

“A-Rod was born here, he plays for Americans. He’s everyone’s inspiration, he’s Hispanic, he’s one of us,” said Hernández.

“Alex is an inspiration to my kids and to other kids out there too,” said Sila Ureña, a mother who lives near the stadium.

Ureña was also displeased when she heard Rodríguez was penalized more than the other players.

She sounded a note echoed by others that accused the League of unfairly penalizing Rodríguez.

“I believe that there is discrimination, and that the MLB wants to show him as a monster,” said Nelson De Jesus, who was doing laps around the track at Macombs Dam

Park with his brothers. De Jesus felt that Rodríguez’s punishment

“devalues other Hispanic players.”On the other hand, John Rivera felt that

it was A-Rod who had not appreciated his contract with the Yankees.

“He’s not living up to it,” he said. “His character isn’t a Yankee character.”
