First Sunday of Lent March 10, 2019

Thank you for your generous support of the 2019

Catholic Appeal. Thanks to your generosity, we can

continue to advance programs for evangelization and

pastoral outreach in our parish communities and

schools, and in the lives of those who turn to us for

assistance. For those of you still interested in making

a pledge to this life-changing work, please find a do-

nation form available in the back of the Church or

visit our website at bostoncatholicappeal.org to view

our latest video about the

Appeal. Thank you!

SOUP AND STATIONS. Friday evenings at St.

Ann’s. Fr. Brian will lead this special prayer followed

by a simple meal of soup, salad and bread in the

Academy. VOLUNTEER COOKS are needed. Please

sign up to bring a meatless soup and/or salad. We

will provide all else. There are sign-up lists at both

churches.

SENIOR FAITH FORMATION - Lenten Lunch and

Learning. Why do we think that our faith stops

growing as we get older and more settled? If so, we

lose out on a lot of relationship with the Lord that can

help us to age well. Also, we tend to focus faith for-

mation on children and once Confirmation happens,

learning is over! Really? Can you imagine not hav-

ing all the learning you have gleaned in your life

since you were 16? Ridiculous. We should be life-

long learners and we should be life-long growers in

the faith. For five Tuesdays in Lent, Fr. Bob will lead

a "Lunch and Learning" session at the Office centering

on Senior Faith Formation. These sessions will begin

on Tuesdays, March 19-April 16, at 12 Noon until

1:30. We will provide a light lunch followed by a dis-

cussion and learning. Please call the office to register

(although still come if you forget) so we have general

idea of numbers. Thank you. See you on the 19th.

RECONCILIATION AND PENANCE. We remind

you that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is always

available from 3:15-3:45 before the 4pm Mass at St.

Brendan. Also, call and make an appointment any

time with either of the priests.

SPECIAL EVENING OF RECONCILIATION.

Monday evening, April 15, from 7pm – 8pm, we will

be available for confession.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE DURING LENT

Abstinence -- Catholics over 14 years of age are

bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is

to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays

of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used

at all.

Fast -- Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of

their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of

fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed.

Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain

strength, may be taken according to each one’s

needs, but together they should not equal another

full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but

liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed .

with the St Ann / St Brendan Collaborative

We are planning to embark on a trip from

October 29, 2019 - November 8, 2019 to visit Rome,

Assisi, Vatican City and the holy places they have to

offer. There is plenty of time to sign up for the 20

available spaces. If you would to do so or would like

more information ,please speak with Fr . Brian or con-

tact him at: [email protected] or 617-436-0310.

Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa

The Propagation of the Faith Appeal is March 23/24

and this year we have the opportunity to support

the work of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for

Africa. They began in 1903 in Uganda when Mother

Kevin and 5 companions took the risk to leave

country, family and friends and accepted the invita-

tion to the unknown – the beginning of a mission-

ary venture that spanned oceans and cultures, bind-

ing peoples of Asia, Europe, North America and

Goa in the great adventure of living the Gospel.

Inspired by her spirit and leadership schools, hospi-

tals, clinics and training institutes were established

in Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia,

Zimbabwe and South Africa. With her Sisters, she

pioneered the education of African women as Reli-

gious Sisters, Nurses, Midwives and Teachers. Sis-

ter Mary Fisher, who will be visiting our parish is a

member of this Congregation. After 41 years of

ministry in Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and South Af-

rica, Sister Mary was asked to return to the States to

help raise funds for the Congregation. For 31 years,

Sister Mary was involved in a spiritual ministry

offering courses on prayer, discernment spiritual

growth as well as being available for a ministry in

offering retreats and spiritual direction
