Why do we get fat?

What do you mean why do we get fat? Who doesn’t know? We eat too much, and therefore we get fat. Or as the more sophisticated will put it, when we consume more calories than we expend, we store the calories as fat. True, right? …Wrong!It isn’t that simple. First of all, the myth that “a calorie is a calorie is a calorie” is just that, a myth, and ultimately a misleading one. We don’t eat calories; we can eat fat, protein or carbohydrates. Calories are just a measure of the heat each food releases. In reality, however, it has very little to do with our metabolism, as our bodies respond differently to carbohydrates, protein and fats. Studies even prove that people on lower carb diets can eat more calories than those on low-fat diets.The insulin connectionWhile losing weight is very complicated and may have some deeper underlying factors like hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction and allergies, the simple answer to why we get fat is… insulin. Insulin is the master hormone that controls our metabolism. It directs nutrients into cells. The main function of insulin is to get the sugar out of the bloodstream and into the cells where is can be used as energy. However, when we abuse the system by eating foods thatarehighinsugarandrefinedcarbs,thecells become resistant to the insulin and the pancreas begins producing more insulin as it tries to force the sugar into our cells. Now, insulin, aside from just lowering sugar levels in the blood, also acts as a storage hormone and it will store the excess sugar as fat in our fat cells. Insulin will also make us hungry faster. Therefore, though it might be calorie-dense, merely eating fats will not cause your body to store it unless you have high amounts of insulin in your blood stream.

The best way to avoid insulin spikes and thus loose weight is through a low carb diet, as protein and fatswill not significantly raiseinsulin. Foods that are high in carbohydrates include: bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, and sugar. Avoid these as much as you can. And eat more protein and fats. There are also supplements available that will lower insulin levels, like chromium and vanadium. Ask your local health food store for a good combination product that will make your cells more responsive to insulin.Exercise will also make your body more insulin sensitive. If you exercise, you will thus require less insulin for sugar metabolism and reduce your storage of fat.
