Everything action a person does leaves an impression, every deed makes a difference, even if we don’t see it right away. For in-stance, in chinuch, parents and educators may sometimes feel they are investing so much in their charges, and yet, they are not always privileged to see the results they had expected. We have to know that every good word we say to a child, every time we demonstrate interest in the child, and every time we express our love to him, it leaves a lasting impression. Over time, these positive experiences accumulate and, G-d willing, one day we will reap the fruits of our labor.The Chidah says that Moshiach might take us out of exile as a result of the prayers of a simple Jew. Nevertheless, does that mean that all those prayers and good deeds of the saintly Jews all throughout the genera-tions were of no consequence, were worth-less?The Chidah explains it with an analogy. In a quaint little, town, many of the resi-dents gathered around a huge tree in the center of town. The goal was to take the tree down. All the town’s strongest men came, axes swinging at their sides. One by one, they swung their axes at the bark of the tree, but to no avail. The tree stood strong and proud. Suddenly, a weak, sickly person stepped out of the crowd, and with one blow of his axe, the whole tree came crashing down. All the townspeople stood still in shock and awe. A discerning indi-

vidual watching the events unfold should have been able to recognize that the sickly person’s success was really not his alone. Credit was due to all the stronger men who had worked that much harder before him to make it happen. The Chidah concluded the parable by comparing the way we can bring Moshiach. Every prayer we offer and every good deed we do has an effect on high and brings Moshiach one step closer.So it is with everything in life. In today’s fast paced world where we heat foods in microwaves and enjoy instant gratification in many other areas of life, we sometimes think we have to see results right away. But it’s important to remember that even if we don’t see the results instantly, everything we do accumulates over time and we will see it one day in the future. This applies to every area in our lives, to our personal life, business lives or chinuch efforts. It all ac-cumulates.

Forover50years,USgovernmentofficialshave confidently and enthusiasticallyclaimed that fluoridation is “safe andeffective”. However, they are seldomprepared to defend the practice in openpublic debate.Actually, there are somanyargumentsagainstfluoridationthatitcangetoverwhelming.

Fluoridation is UNETHICAL because:1) It violates the individual’s right toinformedconsenttomedication.

2)Themunicipalitycannotcontrolthedoseofthepatient.

4) It ignores the fact that some people aremore vulnerable to fluoride’s toxic effectsthan others. Somepeoplewill sufferwhileothersmaybenefit.

Fluoridation is UNNECESSARY because:1) Children can have perfectly good teethwithoutbeingexposedtofluoride.

2)Thepromoters(CDC,1999,2001)admitthatthebenefitsaretopicalnotsystemic,sofluoridated toothpaste,which is universallyavailable, is a more rational approach todeliveringfluoridetothetargetorgan(teeth)

whileminimizingexposuretotherestofthebody.

3)ThevastmajorityofWesternEuropehasrejected water fluoridation, but has beenequallysuccessfulastheUS,ifnotmoreso,intacklingtoothdecay.

5)Childreninnon-fluoridatedcommunitiesare already getting the so-called “optimal”dosesfromothersources(Helleretal,1997).Infact,manyarealreadybeingover-exposedtofluoride.

Fluoridation is UNSAFE because:1) It accumulates in our bones andmakesthemmorebrittleandpronetofracture.Theweight of evidence from animal studies,clinicalstudiesandepidemiologicalstudiesonthisisoverwhelming.Lifetimeexposuretofluoridewillcontributetohigherratesofhipfractureintheelderly.

2)Itaccumulatesinourpinealgland,possiblyloweringtheproductionofmelatonin,averyimportantregulatoryhormone(Luke,1997,2001).

3) Itdamages theenamel (dentalfluorosis)of a high percentage of children. Between30and50%ofchildrenhavedentalfluorosisonatleasttwoteethinoptimallyfluoridatedcountries.
