From the Vicar In late April, the week after Easter, I became an oblate of Holy Wisdom Monastery, just north of Madison, Wisconsin. This means I'm an associate of the monastery; that I have a way of following the monastic Rule of Benedict in my own life, that I maintain a relationship with the sisters and other oblates, and that I engage in a life of prayer in some way. There were 12 of us who became oblates this year, joining a community of about 170 men and women of all Christian traditions and the three sisters (one of whom is Presbyterian).

Holy Wisdom is a place that nourishes my soul and helps me feel close to God. There's something about its prairie landscape, the way the buildings and rooms feel, and even the food served there, that speaks to my spirit.

What is a sacred place in your life? Have you ever thought about how that place might be God speaking to you? Perhaps God speaks there to you about Creation, about your preciousness as a child of God, about your relationships, and about what it means to pray. Sometimes, just being in a certain place is a way to pray and feel God's presence. It can be that simple.

Perhaps the place is far away, or perhaps it's in your backyard. Perhaps it's even at St. Benedict.

Next fall, when I'm on sabbatical, I'll return to Holy Wisdom and stay there for a whole month, as a sort of experiment on my spiritual life. What will it be like to order my life in that place? I'll return to Jerusalem, a place I love, after visiting it in 2001. With my husband, Adam, I'll also experience new sacred places like St. Gregory of Nyssa (a unique Episcopal church in San Francisco), Olympic National Park near Seattle, the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, and the site of Benedict's first monastery outside Rome.

But sacred places don't have to be fancy. As a matter of fact, when a monk once asked his abbott for permission to travel abroad and search for God, the abbott said, "Just go to your room. If you can't find God there, you won't find God anywhere."

The Rev. Heidi Haverkamp Priest and Vicar

Our Sabbatical Time is Coming Rev. Heidi will take a sabbatical time this fall – and so will our congregation! We’ll welcome Father Sam Colley-Toothaker as our Sunday celebrant and preacher. Also, we’ll have a special focus on Benedictine spirituality and hospitality – to God, to one another, to newcomers, and to the stranger. While we’re talking about hospitality and being the “host,” Heidi will be spending time as a stranger herself, as well as a pilgrim and a guest in her reflective time away: on a vacation out West, on retreat in Wisconsin, and on pilgrimage to Benedictine sites in Israel, Jordan, and Italy.

We’ll have a special “Send Off Sunday” on August 17 to bless Rev. Heidi on her way. She and Adam will leave that same day on an overnight train trip to San Francisco. You’ll be able to follow her on her journey at her blog: Stranger, Pilgrim, Guest: A Benedictine Sabbatical –(address TBD).

Important Sabbatical Dates: August 17: Send-Off Sunday! October 17-19: A Weekend with Jane Tomaine, author of St. Benedict’s Toolbox: The Nuts and

Bolts of Everyday Benedictine Living November 30 (Sunday): Rev. Heidi Returns to St. Benedict, Advent begins December 7 (Sunday): A Welcome Back Bash at the Bolingbrook Golf Club

Father Sam Colley-Toothaker

The Reverend Samuel S. Colley-Toothaker is a native of Maine. At age 15, he entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) and began studies for the priesthood. The OMI is a missionary order serving the poorest of the poor throughout the world and living a simple monastic life. At age twenty-four Father Sam left the OMI to marry the love of his life, Linda. They married and had three sons, Thomas, Allen and Samuel, all of whom are now grown and living life on their own. Father Sam worked as an Investment Banker and Corporate Consultant until he resumed his call to priesthood in the Episcopal Church. He comes to the Diocese of Chicago from Danville, Virginia where he served for six and a half years as Rector of Epiphany Episcopal Church, and as Headmaster of Epiphany Episcopal School. He is now working to complete a doctoral degree in clinical psychology, hoping to focus on clergy wellness and pastoral counseling. He and his wife live in Palatine. Father Sam is an avid swimmer, loves to run, play racket ball, and he works out daily in an effort to keep fit. He and Linda are avid animal lovers. While they do not have a furry friend presently, they are looking forward to the arrival of a Maine Coon cat this summer.

Choir this Summer Choir rehearsals end on Thursday, June 5, and will resume again on Thursday, August 28, at the usual time of 7:00 p.m.

The Prayer Map

Starting on Pentecost Sunday, we will have a “Prayer Map.” Along the green hallway, there will be a map of the world, with pins and little tabs to identify parts of the world we are praying for. This will help us hold the world in prayer visually, but also help identify just where South Sudan or Ukraine are in the world. Tabs will be color-coded and our secretary will take them down after 6-8 weeks so the map doesn’t get too crowded.

Summer Coffee Hour You are invited to provide simple coffee hour treats for the summertime. Fruit or veggie trays, simple pastries, crackers and hummus, or any finger food are welcome. It’s lovely to have a spread or brunch, but we’re also grateful just for something to nibble on. Thank you!

New Church Office Hours Beginning Monday, June 16, the Church Office will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. Should you have any questions, please contact Becky Fleming ([email protected]) or Rev. Heidi ([email protected]).

Interview of our Priest and Vicar - Part 2 This interview was conducted by Donnie Williams, Warden

Reverend Heidi Haverkamp has long been a manager that I have admired for her style, compassion and knowledge. The following are excerpts from an interview I conducted with her on March 27, 2014, as part of an assignment for my MBA. What is the single most stressful thing attributed to your position? Never being sure what “success” means, and too often turning to attendance and pledging figures to assess that! If you could train someone to take your place, what knowledge and skills would you make certain that person possessed in order to perform successfully as your successor? I’d want them to know “Family Systems Theory”, how families and groups operate. They would also have to know about anxiety, good and bad. They could also read “Extraordinary Relationships - A New Way of Thinking About Human Interactions” by Roberta Gilbert. In addition, “Anxious Organizations – Why Smart Companies Do Dumb Things” by Jeffery A. Miller and “When Moses Meets Aaron - Staffing and Supervision in Large Congregations” by Susan Beaumont. You must have a clear description of what you are looking for. You must meet with your staff every year and set goals and measure progress. Trust your lay people, trust what they know, trust their leadership. Learn from them and give them great worship on Sundays. If you could design an ideal curriculum or training program to teach you to be a better manager, what would it contain? “Fierce Conversations” by Susan Scott. Using conversation to tell the truth to each other. Where you’re not just having conversations about things that aren’t important and not telling the whole truth. You can be able to hear disagreements and be okay with that. When I think about managing there are a lot of bad examples, but Jesus was a good manager. He let his people take the lead and gave them a good example to follow. What managerial skills do you use to motivate your employees? (Staff, Wardens, Bishops Committee & Finance Chair) Having fun! Spending time in fellowship as we work or meet. Deepening our faith through Bible study and devotions when we meet, and holding that out in front of us as the constant reason we do everything we do. Giving them

Page 13: The Church of St - St. Benedict€¦ · The Episcopal Church of St. Benedict ... 2 From the Vicar In late April, the week after Easter, I became an oblate of Holy Wisdom Monastery,

13

permission to say “no,” to fail, and to ask for help. Saying thank you as much as we possibly can to each other. What is the best way to approach an employee if you see that his/her job effort is decreasing? I meet with my employees regularly, so I could bring this up in the course of one of our usual meetings. I would say something like, “I notice you’ve been kind of out of it on Sunday mornings – is everything ok lately?” In terms of volunteers, I would do the same, although I might make the person nervous by emailing or calling and asking, “Can we talk?” I might have this discussion over the phone, rather than in person, in the right situation. Sometimes people who aren’t doing well avoid me, though, and since they’re church members and not employees, I can’t force them to talk to me! I noticed that the Bible hasn’t come up much during this interview, why is that? Yes, I think it’s because I was looking at being a manager and not just being a Priest. Moses wasn’t a good speaker, so God gave him Aaron. Moses’ father-in-law Jethro told him to delegate. There were many bad leaders in the Bible, David was vain and emotional. Saul was depressed and unrealistic. You have to keep God at the center. A lot of leaders forgot that and fell into idolatry. A common idol for today’s ministers is “growing their church”, the numbers. You can’t let that be the focus of your ministry. In Seminary we were told, “it’s about you, but it’s not about you.” The church is a reflection of you. If you’re healthy and taking care of yourself and delivering a good message, the church will be okay. You have to be okay with everyone not liking you, because that can be an idol too. Think of other effective managers you know. What skills do they demonstrate that explain their success? They love what they do. It really helps to love what you do. They are able to laugh at themselves and not take themselves too seriously.

I think of Priests who take what they have and make it central to their ministries. They are good listeners and they have a good intuition. They really have to love their people to do this kind of work. You have to remember that you can never do everything you want to do. There’s always another call to make, etc.

Our Bishop Jeffery Lee is an amazing manager because of his humility. He’s a reader, traveler, always learning from books, the people in Western Illinois and Renk Sudan. He’s a great communicator. Spiritual life is really tangible when you’re around him. His personal “Christian Walk” is about the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Listening is very important. Listen to the people you manage. Conflict management. You must know when to let things go, when to engage and when to cut things off, especially if that person or thing is harming the organization. My Sabbath day is used to feed my spiritual practices and to do something creative, I write. I use lunchtime to connect with my husband. I take vacations, it helps that my husband goes to the same church with me. Being a couple without children helps and gives me a flexibility that I’m grateful for. I love my job. I feel so lucky. I get paid to be spiritual. It’s hard work but it’s so fulfilling. I get to be present at these personal moments in people’s lives. I get to live my faith every day. It kicks my butt sometimes but it’s really great. And so concludes the interview with Rev. Heidi Haverkamp. Sometimes people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Once I met with Rev. Heidi for some spiritual assistance and she came through for me on a grand scale. So much so that I joined her church and I haven’t regretted that decision once. Rev. Heidi is easily one of the top ten people that I admire and aspire to be like. I know that she is in my life for a lifetime. God is good.
