Christ our Redeemer: The Resurrection & the Life

This Sunday, March 31, at the 8:30 Mass, we celebrated the Second Scrutiny. Along with those preparing for baptism (our elect), we prayed that God would open our eyes and enable us to see not

just our own sin, but the way we might participate in social sin.

Next week, April 7, we’ll celebrate the Third Scrutiny at 8:30 Mass. We’ll pray that our elect have progressed in their recognition of sin; and that we, too, have deepen our sense of repentance. The story of the raising of Lazarus challenges us to unbind people from the forces of sin.

In preparation for next week’s Lenten ritual, we invite you to consider Jesus’ words, “The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, “Untie him and let him go."” (John 11:43) Jesus commands those present to untie Lazarus – and set him free. What steps can you take to untie those who are held bound by evil?

Also, everyone is encouraged to join us on Monday, April 1 at 5:30p Mass when we present the Creed to our elect. This is an important step for both our community and our elect as we hand over one of our most sacred and illuminating texts. Please, join us for dinner in Hellmann Hall after Mass, too!

Please Come to Two Special Lenten Celebrations: 5:30p Mass on Monday,

April 1 and Tuesday, April 9

YOU are an important part of our parish community and we hope you’ll join us on Monday, April 1 at a special 5:30p Mass when we will present the Creed to those who are preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. The Creed, which recalls the wonderful deeds of God, expresses the heart of our faith. It is our responsibility as baptized members of the community, to hand on this ancient text to our would-be new members. Plus – you’ll hear Fr. Martin give a powerful homily on the significance of the Creed in our life as Catholic Christians! A soup and bread Lenten dinner will be served afterwards.

Then, on Tuesday, April 9 at 5:30p Mass, we’ll hand on the Lord’s Prayer to our elect. We need members of our community to help us present this prayer as well. We hope you’ll join us!

Dear Parishioner,

St. Benedict Church is billed monthly by the

Archdiocese of Indianapolis for all the subscriptions

to the Criterion Newspaper that are mailed to our

registered parishioners. The Archdiocese maintains

a “full-coverage policy” when it comes to

subscriptions to the Criterion. The full coverage

policy allows the Criterion to generate a stable

amount of ad income, based on the newspaper’s

circulation, but it does mean that parishes are asked

to cover the bill for the subscriptions of its

parishioners. The annual subscription rate per

household is $22.00, and as a parish we are billed

over $5,500.00 annually for the Criterion.

We would be grateful if you could help us cover this

expense.

Checks may be made out to St. Benedict Church.

You may place the envelope in the weekend

collection baskets, or mail it to the parish office.

Please make sure your name is clearly marked on

the envelope so that we may give you credit for your

donation.

If you are a registered parishioner would like to

receive the Criterion and currently are not, please

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

CRS Rice Bowl

Encounter Kumba

Theme for Week 4: Rights and Responsibilities Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to

live and work in the world. In this principle, Rights and

Responsibilities, we remember that every person has basic

rights that make life truly human. Corresponding to our

rights, we all have duties and responsibilities to one

another, our families and the larger society.

Encounter Kumba

Waisa didn’t spend a single day in school. When she was young, no one thought girls should receive an education. Plus, there was work to do. She helped her twelve siblings at her family’s farm. She was responsible for helping her mom sell meat to their neighbors. Now, things have changed in Sinkunia, a town in the north of Sierra Leone. Waisa knows the importance of education—especially for girls. “If there’s education, Sierra Leone will develop,” she says. “Our students will make sure of it.” That’s why Waisa insists that her 12-year-old granddaughter, Kumba, attends the nearby CRS-sponsored school, so she can learn how to make a difference in her community and her country. And, through the nutritious lunch that CRS gives to each student every day, Kumba and her classmates can focus on their studies and not on their hunger. Kumba’s favorite subject is math because she likes the challenge. And when she completes her education, she wants to be a nurse. A nurse, Kumba says, helps cure the sick, and if there were more nurses in Sinkunia, those who get sick wouldn’t have to leave the town to get healthcare. Waisa is proud of her granddaughter and continues to work hard to support her. With no shade from the hot sun, Waisa cares for the family’s garden, watering eggplants, tomatoes, onions and more to be harvested and sold through the streets of Sinkunia. Kumba helps, too, visiting the garden every day after school. “I’m happy if I can support my daughters and granddaughters, even through university,” Waisa says. With a smile, she adds, “I know that educated girls help their parents and their communities.”

Share the journey: A good education doesn’t just benefit the student. It benefits the family, the

community, and the common good, allowing individuals to flourish without needing to leave home.
