Camp Nazareth 2013 Faith Enrichment Theme “The Church is the Door to Life” Scripture Verse “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” – Galatians 5:25 Theme Overview Our Summer Camp theme for 2013 is “The Church is the Door to Life”. This is the second summer of this 2-year theme. It is an expression used by St. Irenaeus of Lyon in the 2 nd century and comes from his work Against Heresies 3.4.1. Last summer we used Matthew 19:17 “If you would enter life, keep the commandments”, as the verse from which we talked about the Church as the Door to Life. For the summer 2013 we will be using the verse “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25) from which to talk about the Church as the Door to Life. Essentially, the Faith Enrichment Curriculum will explore aspects of the Church’s teaching about the Holy Spirit. Christ calls Himself the Door of the Sheepfold. We will refer to the Holy Spirit as the “key” which unlocks that “door” and by which we gain access to Life. Among the many titles we give the 3 rd Person of the Holy Trinity, He is called the “Giver of Life” as we say in the “O Heavenly King” prayer. Through the 2013 curriculum we will explore that Life as given by Him and as lived in Him. So often the Holy Spirit is thought of as simply a divine “It”, a divine power, rather than as the 3 rd PERSON of the Holy Trinity who is Himself the One given to us by Jesus Christ so that we would not be left alone, as orphans. There is a relationship we must cultivate 1

Faith Enrichment Theme“The Church is the Door to Life”

Scripture Verse“If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” –

Galatians 5:25

Theme OverviewOur Summer Camp theme for 2013 is “The Church is the Door to Life”. This is the second summer of this 2-year theme. It is an expression used by St. Irenaeus of Lyon in the 2nd century and comes from his work Against Heresies 3.4.1.

Among the many titles we give the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity, He is called the “Giver of Life” as we say in the “O Heavenly King” prayer. Through the 2013 curriculum we will explore that Life as given by Him and as lived in Him. So often the Holy Spirit is thought of as simply a divine “It”, a divine power, rather than as the 3rd PERSON of the Holy Trinity who is Himself the One given to us by Jesus Christ so that we would not be left alone, as orphans. There is a relationship we must cultivate with the Holy Spirit, who in turn opens to us and gives us our Life in Christ. The door to Life has been opened to us in Baptism. The Church has received its newest member. The “key” to open all that Life has to offer us has been given to us in Chrismation. What that “key” is, how we live in Him, and how we walk by Him will be the focus of our Faith Enrichment curriculum

In the Faith Enrichment curriculum and in other aspects of our camping program (services, sermonettes, evening cabin talks, etc.) we will be addressing this theme. The specific day’s themes are as follows:

Sunday: “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. ”Monday: “The ‘Key’ to the Door to Life”Tuesday: “Chrismation: Our Personal Pentecost”Wednesday: “The Heavenly King”Thursday: “Walking by the Spirit”

Friday: “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit”

The curriculum below is formatted the same each day. Please look closely at the format and its content.

You will see at least one significant change this year. The Faith Enrichment segment is in the format of a lesson plan, complete with Main Points, a Materials List and several Activities. This is an important step for us as we look for new ways to improve the Camp Program.

You will also see several Appendices which are given as reference material for those responsible for teaching any portion of this curriculum. They serve only as background material and are not necessary in order to teach the daily Faith Enrichment segments. The Appendices are:

1. Article and background on the making of Chrism2. Fictitious Dialogue between a Camper and the Holy Spirit3. Hymns of Pentecost (Matins & Vespers)4. St. Basil’s Anaphora Prayers5. Brief Article on the “O Heavenly King” Prayer6. Scripture References to the Holy Spirit7. Select Quotes from the Philokalia regarding the Holy Spirit

We are looking forward to covering this year’s theme and making it a part of the Camp Program.

Thank you for being a part of the 2013 Summer Program at Camp!

Yours in Christ,Fr. Stephen

MondayThe “Key” to the Door to Life

Goal: To understand that the Holy Spirit, the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity, was given on the Day of Pentecost and established the Church. To understand what the Feast of Pentecost was to the Jews and what it now means to us and how the two are related. To explore what it means to the Church to have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit (i.e. Why was He needed?)

MORNING PRAYERS

Old Testament Reading: Leviticus 23:15-21 and Joel 2:23-32

Epistle: Acts 2:1-11

Gospel: John 7:37-52; 8:12

Morning Sermon: Link the Feast of Pentecost with the Jewish Feast of Pentecost (Festival of Weeks). This

was the feast celebrating the first-fruits of the harvest – it showed the fulfillment of God’s promise to Israel to bring them to this land. Likewise our Pentecost shows the fulfillment of the Lord’s promise to send His Holy Spirit upon us.

Talk about the Holy Spirit as the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity – He is not the Divine “It” but One of the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity

Talk about the Holy Spirit in terms of the Gospel reading – as the “living water” which nourishes and sustains our souls

Talk about one fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness or self-control (Galatians 5.22-23)

FAITH ENRICHMENT

3

Main Points: The Holy Spirit was given/sent on the Day of Pentecost and marks the beginning of

the Church The Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity The Lord promised to send His Apostles the Holy Spirit. This was a promise already

spoken of by the Prophets in the Old Testament. Life in the Church is nothing other than life lived in and by the Holy Spirit. He is the

“Key” which opens the Door to Life for us

Materials/Supplies Needed Bible Icon Print or copies of the Pentecost Icon Copies of the Hymn “Do Not Forsake Us” Bucket of Keys – one key with “The Holy Spirit” written on it

Page 4: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

1. The Holy Spirit was given on the Day of Pentecost and marks the beginning of the Church

A. Re-visit Acts 2:1-11 – you can re-read or simply summarize

ACTIVITY: Give Campers the Icon Print (or copy of the print) of Pentecost. Let them look at it for a minute

Ask the Campers questions about the Reading and Icon:Where were the Apostles and the others when this happened? Why were they there? What were they doing at the time? What did the coming of the Holy Spirit sound like? What did the coming of the Holy Spirit look like?

Make the point that the Apostles were commanded by our Lord to wait in Jerusalem until they received the promise of the Father, the power from on high. Not even they could preach and teach without the Holy Spirit.

2. Now make the point that the Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity.

A. The Holy Spirit is not just some divine power given to us.

ACTIVITY: Have Campers “Cross” themselves as they say the words “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Make the point that we say “In the NAME…” We don’t give a NAME to something that is just a source of power, an “it”…the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity is called something by us -- The HOLY SPIRIT…..this shows that He is one PERSON of the Holy Trinity, the 3rd PERSON.

3. Now make the point that the Lord had promised to give His Apostles the Holy Spirit.

A. Read John 15.26 and 16.7

When the Holy Spirit came upon those in the Upper Room the Lord’s Promise was fulfilled.

This Promise had been spoken of by the Prophets of the Old Testament many centuries before Jesus was born.

B. Read Joel 2:28-29 (500 years before Christ) and Isaiah 44:3 (700 years before Christ) and Ezekiel 39:29 (600 years before Christ)

4

Page 5: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

Jesus Christ spoke of this same promise and fulfilled this promise

The Day of Pentecost, the fulfillment of the promise, the pouring out of the Holy Spirit was a JOYFUL event. The promise of the Lord included telling His Apostles that they would never be alone, that He would not abandon them, not leave them orphans. When He was sent upon the Apostles, because this fulfilled the promise, this was and is CELEBRATED by us as JOYFUL.

ACTIVITY: Have the entire group of campers or a select group of campers sing the hymn “Do Not Forsake Us” – tell the campers that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is how our Lord did not leave us as orphans.

4. The Holy Spirit is for us the “key” to the Life Jesus promised us in the Kingdom of Heaven. He is the “key” who unlocks the mysteries of the Church. He is the “key” to the Door to Life, that is the Church and all Her mysteries. He is the “key” that opens to us the Life Jesus promised us we would have in Him (I have come that they may have life and life abundantly.) St. Maximos the Confessor – “…For every capacity for fulfilling a commandment is called a gift of the Spirit.”

ACTIVITY: Take the bucket of keys you have been given and scatter the bucket over the ground (NOT ON GRASS) – spread over concrete or sidewalk. One key has “The Holy Spirit” written on it. Have groups of 10-15 campers come up to try and find the “Key” which has “The Holy Spirit” written on it.

Make the point that without the Holy Spirit the Door to Life will not open to us. Without the Holy Spirit we cannot be saved in and through the Church. St. Irenaeus of Lyon – “Without the Spirit of God we cannot be saved…Receiving the Spirit, we walk in newness of life, in obedience to God.” We will discuss how and why this is the case later in the week.

TuesdayChrismation: Our Personal Pentecost

Goal: To understand that the same Holy Spirit poured out at Pentecost is given to us in our Chrismation. To learn about the Sacrament of Chrismation. To look at our life differently now that the Holy Spirit has been given to us.

MORNING PRAYERS

Old Testament Reading: Numbers 11:16-17, 24-30

means, “The Seal of the Gift of the Holy Spirit, etc.) Talk about our bodies as Temples of the Holy Spirit What does it mean for the Holy Spirit to dwell with us and in us

FAITH ENRICHMENT

7

Main Points: The Holy Spirit poured out at Pentecost is the same Holy Spirit given to us in

Chrismation Chrismation has often been called our “Personal Pentecost” The Holy Spirit enables/inspires us to live our Life in Christ The Holy Spirit gives us a “taste” of the Kingdom to come here and now

Materials/Supplies Needed Bible Bottle of Holy Chrism Olive Oil, Rosemary, Marjoram, Cinnamon, Red Wine, Rose Oil Easel and Marker Flashlight & Batteries Dirt

1. The Holy Spirit poured out at Pentecost is the same Holy Spirit given to us in Chrismation.

A. Re-visit John 14:15-17 – you can re-read or simply summarize

B. We receive as a gift the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity according to the Lord’s promise.

2. This is why Chrismation has often been called our “Personal Pentecost”

A. In our Personal Pentecost we are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, not just some power.

B. Most importantly, everything that we received at conception (heart, mind, soul, body, everything) is Consecrated in Chrismation. What does that mean? Everything about us is now “set apart” to the service and glory of God and one another in the name of Jesus Christ. We now have a purpose, a Life, to live.

C. The priest uses a special oil called Chrism to “seal” us. As he “seals” us he says “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

ACTIVITY: Show the campers the bottle of Chrism – allow some to smell it. Show the Campers the List of 57 Ingredients that go into the making and blessing of the Holy Chrism. Allow the Campers to smell some of the ingredients that go into the Chrism – see if they can guess what they are smelling.

Talk Briefly about the making of the Holy Chrism

D. Ask Campers if they can list the parts of the body we are sealed on. We are sealed on the Head, Eyes, Nose, Mouth, Ears, Chest, Hands, Feet and Back

ACTIVITY: Ask the Campers why we “seal” in this way…what does it mean for us to be sealed on the head, eyes, nose….Write the Answers on the Easel provided.

Head to think and learn about GodEyes to see the wonders of God all around usNose to smell the wonders of God all around usMouth to always sing the praise of GodEars to listen to GodChest to use our strength for GodHands to do God’s workFeet to walk God’s way – link with commandmentsBack to take up my Cross and follow Christ

3. Having been sealed, we are now enabled to live our Life in Christ

8

Page 9: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

A. It was only after the Apostles received the Holy Spirit that they were able to begin preaching about the Kingdom of God. Until they received the Holy Spirit Jesus had instructed them to remain in Jerusalem. Afterwards, they went all over the known world at that time bringing the Good News of the Kingdom to everyone. Before the coming the Holy Spirit they were afraid and were behind closed and locked doors. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were no longer afraid and talked about Christ and Heaven openly in public

B. Only after the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at His Baptism was He driven into the wilderness to fast and be tempted and then begin His public ministry

C. There are many examples in the Bible of people who by God’s Spirit were able to live the life God wanted them to live. There are many examples of people who accomplished extraordinary things by the power of God’s Holy Spirit.

Othniel (Judges 3:10) – was able to “judge” Israel and fight for Israel and defeat the King of Mesopotamia

Gideon (Judges 6:34) – was able to defeat the Midianites with only 300 menJephthah (Judges 11.29) – was able to defeat the Ammonites and fulfill his

promise to GodSamson (Judges 14.6, 19; 15.14) – was able to kill the lion and fight the

Philistines with the jawbone of an ass

D. But one of the most important instances of God’s Holy Spirit changing a person into a new person comes from the Prophecy of 1 Samuel 10.

ACTIVITY: Read the account of Saul’s change (1 Samuel 10.5-6, 9-11). – Key in on 2 phrases in the passage:

1. v.6 – “Then the spirit of the Lord will come mightily upon you, and you shall…be turned into another man.

2. v. 9 – “when he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart…”

(PLEASE DO NOT TALK ABOUT WHAT EVENTUALLY HAPPENS TO SAUL WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT DEPARTS FROM HIM. WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THAT ON THURSDAY.)

Make the point that being sealed with the Holy Spirit through the anointing with Chrism changes us by giving us a “new heart”, a heart filled with the presence and power of the Holy Spirit by whom we can accomplish the great deeds that win our salvation.

ACTIVITY: Ask for 2 volunteers. Have one hold up the flashlight you give them. Ask them to turn it on, and ask the rest of the campers where the power to provide light comes from….answer of course is the batteries. Likewise, with God’s Holy Spirit in us, we are able to “shine” in the world – to show people that God is in the world through us.

Now ask the second volunteer to remove the batteries. Looks like the same flashlight, but it cannot provide light. Likewise, without the Holy Spirit there is no light in us to show the world God. Have 2nd Volunteer put batteries back.

9

Page 10: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

Ask for a third and final volunteer (keep the two). Ask third volunteer to take some of the dirt provided and rub it on the lens of the flashlight. Now shine the flashlight. What has happened? The power is still in the flashlight, but the lens is now dirty and the light does not shine as brightly to the world. The lights power is still just as strong, but because of the dirt it doesn’t illuminate/light up the world as much. Our sins dim the light of the Holy Spirit as it shines from us to the world. The result is that the world becomes a darker place. So before we complain about the “state of the world” and the things we see in it, we should take a look at ourselves…what are we doing or not doing that is causing the world to be a darker place?

reveals our true identity – gives us the potential for true happiness, peace, joy…What the world gives us is a passing happiness – the illusion of true happiness. Don’t let Orthodoxy be your secret identity and only come out of us in church or at home. If we are Orthodox, we are Orthodox all the time. How come I don’t feel the joy and peace of the Holy Spirit? What can I do to have the Holy Spirit?

WednesdayThe Holy Spirit: The Heavenly King

Goal: To understand a little better the “O Heavenly King” Prayer. To understand some of the titles we give the Holy Spirit. To know what it means when we say the Holy Spirit gives us a foretaste of the Kingdom of Heaven.

MORNING PRAYERS

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 32:14-20 and Jeremiah 31:31-34

Epistle: Ephesians 1:3-14

Gospel: John 15:26-27; 16:5-15

Morning Sermon: Talk about one or two of the titles we ascribe to the Holy Spirit: Heavenly King, the

Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Treasurer of Blessings, Giver of Life, etc. Talk about one fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness or self-control (Galatians 5.22-23) Talk about the Spirit taking what is Christ’s and declaring it to us. The operation of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharist and in all the sacraments.

FAITH ENRICHMENT

12

Main Points: The “O Heavenly King” prayer is the only “official” prayer we have to the Holy

Spirit. There are many titles we give the Holy Spirit and each one tells us something about

who the Holy Spirit is The Holy Spirit is always active in the Church and in us – Operations and Energies Life in the Church is nothing other than Life in the Spirit for us.

Materials/Supplies Needed Bible Copies of “O Heavenly King” Prayer Easel and marker Paper with one title given the Holy Spirit on it plus a brief write-up about that title. 5

total pieces: 1. Heavenly King, 2. Comforter, 3. Spirit of Truth, 4. Treasurer of Blessings, 5. Giver of Life

Page 13: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

ACTIVITY: Have all the campers recite the “O Heavenly King…” prayer.

Ask them in what church services, or in what part of the church services we find this prayer.

1. The “O Heavenly King…” prayer is the only “official” prayer the church has to the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit. While it is not the only prayer, it is certainly the most common to the 3rd Person of the Holy Trinity.

It begins all prayer in the Church. Even the priest must say this prayer before the Liturgy begins. It sets the condition really in which all prayer can occur – “…come and dwell within us and cleanse us from every blemish…” – we need the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in order to do anything, including prayer.

In a certain sense, this prayer leads us in every other prayer (in church, at home, everywhere) because every real prayer only “happens” by the “breath of the Spirit” (see Rom. 8.26)

ACTIVITY: From memory have the campers list the titles we give the Holy Spirit in the “O Heavenly King…” prayer. List them on the Easel.

2. There are many titles the Holy Spirit has been given and each one tells us something about who He is and what He does.

Talk about SOME of these titles:

ACTIVITY: Crumple the pieces of paper up with the titles given the Holy Spirit. Throw the crumpled pieces of paper out to specific campers. When you want to talk about a specific title, ask who has the paper with that tile on it and have them read the write-up out loud to everyone and then dialogue briefly about it.

“Heavenly King”, “Comforter”, “Spirit of Truth”, “Treasurer of Blessings”, “Giver of Life”, “Blessed One”. Also called “The Comforter”, “Helper”, “Counselor” by our Lord

Heavenly King – without the Holy Spirit we cannot seek God, pray to God or enter the Kingdom of God. Life, Life in the Church, Life in General is Life lived in and by the Spirit of God. It is the King who grants life, under His protection we live life, and if He were not with us, our enemies would soon destroy us. The Holy Spirit in this way is the Heavenly King. He is the Heavenly King because He enables us to experience the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth while waiting for its complete fulfillment in Heaven.

Comforter – Our Lord sent the Spirit to His Apostles (and us) so that we would not be alone, i.e. without Him. He is the one who comforts because by Him we know we are not without God and with Him we have, as St. Paul says, the guarantee of salvation. That is the greatest comfort, but simply as Comforter He cares for us in ways not one else can – is

13

Page 14: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

their any sorrow or sadness that “The Comforter” cannot overcome in us? NO! But perhaps the greatest source of “comfort” is not in the sense we think. He is the Comforter because He is the One who gives us genuine strength. The greatest comfort is that with Him we cannot be overcome by any spiritual enemy. He is strength to us and that is a comfort to know, believe and experience.

Spirit of Truth – Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life…His Spirit must therefore be the Truth as well. God the Spirit is not different in this than God the Son. The promise given to the Apostles was that He would guide them into all the truth – the Truth about God, the Truth about the Church, the Truth about faith AND the Truth about man – this is what is entrusted to the Holy Spirit by Christ (“…He will take what is mine and declare it to you.”) But we have to ask for the Truth from Him.

Treasurer of Blessings – from the hand of God comes all that we have, every blessing in our life. It is the Spirit who dispenses these blessings and who enables us to develop, use and be saved by them. We’re not talking about ToysRUs gifts. There are many varieties of gifts and each of us is given something(s) by the Treasurer of Blessings. He gives as He sees fit and according to our faith in Him. The greatest blessing is the Spirit Himself who is not given “by measure” as St. John says (Jn. 3.34) but poured out upon us.

Giver of Life – all of life (creation, us, spiritual life). Most importantly, by the seal of the gift of Himself, we now have real and genuine life. We now have the ability to be children of God, and are His children. Without the Holy Spirit we cannot be God’s children. We must preserve and protect that “seal” so that God can recognize us.

3. These are all titles, and they do tell us about the Holy Spirit and what He is like, but we must remember that He is always active in us and in His Church. He lives and breathes in all of God’s creation and in all of us.

Example: On the Day of Pentecost the result of the preaching of the Apostles was that 3000 people were baptized and received the Holy Spirit. On the very first day the Spirit was poured out upon the Apostles, 3000 souls were added to the Faith. WOW!! How did this happen? It says that when the people heard St. Peter preaching they were “cut to the heart.” This was the very power and operation of the Holy Spirit. He could not be seen, but He was active in the hearts of those listening to the Apostles, He was active in the Apostles words, and all around the Apostles the people were affected.

ACTIVITY: Take perfume/cologne bottle and spray it all around above the campers. Soon the mist disappears but the aroma stays around us and on us. Ask if any campers have ever gone to a department store and tested different perfume or cologne fragrances. Ask them what their favorite fragrance is. Make the point that just like we don’t see the perfume on us or on someone else but we do smell it, just like that we don’t “see” the Holy Spirit but His activity/action/operation is in all God’s creation, in His Church and in us.

A. Jesus promised his Apostles that the Holy Spirit would be with them and in them. The Holy Spirit is with us and in us in the Church and in each of us through Chrismation.

14

By the power of the Holy Spirit the bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ – “Send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts…and make this bread to be the precious Body of Your Christ…”

By the power of the Holy Spirit, through the laying on of the Priest’s hand, forgiveness is given to us in Confession

By the power of the Holy Spirit, through the laying on of the Bishop’s hand, a Deacon becomes a Priest

By the power of the Holy Spirit tears are given to the penitent By the power of the Holy Spirit the people of God are transformed into the very

Body of Christ in the Liturgy (St. Basil the Great in his treatise On the Holy Spirit says that it is impossible to worship the Son except in the Holy Spirit; it is impossible to call upon the Father except in the Spirit of adoption)

By the power of the Holy Spirit miracles are performed through the hands of God’s saints

Etc.

In us: By the power of the Holy Spirit we are given life in our mother’s womb By the power of the Holy Spirit our bodies grow By the power of the Holy Spirit we learn about God and believe in Him (St. Basil

the Great in his treatise On the Holy Spirit says that it is impossible to believe in the Father and the Son without the presence of the Holy Spirit in us.)

By the power of the Holy Spirit we can see our sins and repent By the power of the Holy Spirit we are given strength to help others By the power of the Holy Spirit we can pray and have a relationship with God By the power of the Holy Spirit we experience joy, love, peace, etc.

4. Life in the Church is nothing other than Life in the Spirit for us.

Fr. John of Kronstadt said in My Life in Christ that the words of the psalms, the prayers of the Saints, the liturgical worship of the Church is the “breathing of God’s Spirit” in us.

But then why do we ask in the “O Heavenly King” prayer for the Holy Spirit to come and dwell within us? If He is already with us, why do we have to ask Him to come and dwell within us? Tune in tomorrow!!

ThursdayWalking by the Spirit

Goal: To understand better what it means to “walk by the Spirit” in our lives. To learn how we develop a relationship with God’s Holy Spirit. To learn what it means to be “Temples of the Holy Spirit”.

MORNING PRAYERS

Epistle: Galatians 5:16-25

Gospel: John 3:1-12; Luke 11:11-13

Morning Sermon: Ezekiel reading – what does it mean to receive a new spirit and a new heart from God Link the new spirit and heart with the keeping of God’s commandments Talk about cultivating the presence of the Holy Spirit through daily practice Talk about Nicodemus’ difficulty (and our own) in understanding what God has given us

FAITH ENRICHMENT

17

Main Points: Living by the Spirit means that everything in our life is a gift from Him Walking by the Spirit means simply “walking” the way Jesus Christ did In order to walk by the Spirit we need to follow the commandments In order to be a Temple of the Holy Spirit we need to not only follow the

commandments but also keep away from things “unhealthy” for our souls

Materials/Supplies Needed Bible Branch with leaves from a tree Cut-outs of “footsteps” (shoe prints) with words/actions on them (“Commandments”,

“Fast”, “Pray”, “Love”, “Kindness”, “Self-Control”, all the fruit of the Holy Spirit, plus “Communion”, “Sacraments”, “Services”, “Humility”, “Forgive”, “Purity”, “Faith”, etc.)

Cut-outs of “footsteps” with sins/vices on them (mercilessness, anger, jealousy, foul talk, drunkenness, lying, disbelief, meanness, gossip, hatred, grudges, etc.)

Set of nice church clothes – pants, shirt

ACTIVITY: Hold a branch from a tree up. Ask campers how this branch is related to Pentecost.

Adorn Church with branches at Pentecost. Why? To show us the Sprit gives life – green is a color that shows the gift of life

1. Most importantly…our life and everything in it is a gift from God.

This is what it means to live by the Spirit. We are given life by and in Him.

The Holy Spirit Himself is a gift from God – we say “The seal of the GIFT of the Holy Spirit.”

But while we do “live by the spirit” meaning it is He who gives us life as the “Giver of Life”, we must also “walk by the Spirit”.

2. Walking by the Spirit means simply “walking” the way Jesus Christ did.

ACTIVITY: Ask campers if they know what it means “to walk in someone’s footsteps”?

It is an expression that means you do the same things as the person; you live the same way they did.

Earlier in the week we said we were given the same Spirit that Christ had, the very same Spirit that was given to the Apostles at Pentecost. We have been given the Spirit of Christ, the Holy Spirit so that we could follow in Christ’s footsteps.

ACTIVITY: Put footprints on the ground that have different actions/words on them. “Commandments”, “Fast”, “Pray”, “Love”, “Kindness”, “Self-Control”, all the fruit of the Holy Spirit, plus “Communion”, “Sacraments”, “Services”, “Humility”, “Forgive”, “Purity”, “Faith”, etc.

Have different campers come up and walk on these footsteps. Maybe space some out differently so they have to jump a little to get to the next one – say that sometimes it is not easy to follow in our Lord’s footsteps, but they are footsteps that lead to the Kingdom of Heaven. Maybe have the footsteps leading toward the Church.

KEEP THE FOOTSTEPS DOWN – WE WILL USE THEM A LITTLE LATER IN THE LESSON.

If our Lord prayed, then we pray. If our Lord fasted, then we fast. If our Lord went to “church”, then we go to Church. If our Lord practiced patience, then we practice patience. If our Lord forgave, then we forgive. ETC.

What this all means is…..

3. In order to “walk by the Spirit” we need to follow the commandments.

18

Page 19: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

Remember we talked earlier in the week about our Chrismation?

ACTIVITY: Does anyone remember on what parts of the Body we apply the Holy Chrism?Forehead, eyes, nose, mouth/lips, ears, chest, hands, feet and back

We do this so that we would with all our mind, heart, body and soul follow the commandments. We cannot do this without God’s own Holy Spirit helping us. We are sealed with His Holy Spirit so we could walk in His footsteps, so that we could always “walk in the Spirit”.

But we are “sealed” for another reason as well.

4. In order to be a Temple of the Holy Spirit we need to not only follow the commandments but also keep away from things “unhealthy” for our souls

We were “sealed” not only to keep the commandments, but we were sealed in order to seal out evil/bad things from our senses.

ACTIVITY: Now add to the footsteps already down a variety of other footsteps with vices/temptations on them: “mercilessness”, “anger”, “jealousy”, “foul talk”, “drunkenness”, “lying”, ”disbelief” etc. Intersperse the “walk in the Spirit” steps with these other steps. Now have campers come and try to walk in the footsteps of Christ.

It is not always easy to follow in Christ’s footsteps, but with His Holy Spirit guiding and helping us, we are not afraid and we have confidence that we can “walk in the Spirit”.

Why is it important to “seal out” evil things from our senses? In order to be a good home/temple for God’s Spirit in us, we cannot “dirty” our bodies and souls. That is exactly what happens when we allow passions to lead us to sin.

St. Basil the Great (On the Holy Spirit) – says that the Spirit only comes to us when we withdraw ourselves from evil passions which have crept into the soul through its friendship with the flesh, alienating us from a close relationship with God.

What did we learn about this morning in the Epistle reading? St. Paul said “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would.” (Galatians 5:16-17)

There is something that will prevent us from doing what we should. There is something that fights against us walking in the Spirit, walking in Christ’s footsteps. Believe it or not what would prevent us is within us.

19

Page 20: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

ACTIVITY: Take a nice set of church clothes – pants and shirt. Hold them up for everyone to see. Talk about how they look nice. Throw them onto ground to dirty them. Step on them. Rub them around in dirt. (Alternately: if got clothes big enough, could have camper put them over their clothes, and have them go slide around on grass.)

Ask the question: What do your parents say (especially when you’re younger) when you get your nice clothes on for Church or for an event…they say “don’t get them dirty…keep them clean…don’t go playing around or running around you might get them dirty…” Our parents want us to keep our nice clothes clean. They want us to behave, act, live like we know we have good clothes on. We would never take our nice clothes and get them dirty on purpose.

When we have been anointed with God’s Holy Spirit in Chrismation, after we have been washed in the waters of baptism, we are called to live knowing that we are “clean”, knowing that we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit to live a particular way – keeping not our clothes clean, but our souls clean from sin.

Just as we behave a particular way when we have church clothes on, we are called to live a particular way now that we have put on Christ and been sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

But if we live by the desires of the flesh, we are “dirtying the clothes” so to speak, our souls – we are no longer becoming fit Temples for the Holy Spirit, but are driving Him from us. And when we drive the Holy Spirit from us we are no longer ourselves.

ACTIVITY: Ask campers if they remember the story of Saul from a few days ago…He was the first King of Israel…What happened to him…When he was anointed by Samuel God said the Spirit of the Lord would come upon him and he would be turned into another man and that God gave him another heart. And he did and Saul prophesied with the prophets and was mighty in battle.

BUT….

Later Saul does not listen to the Lord…he does not destroy all that the Lord commands him to of the Amalekites (1 Sam 15.3 & 9) including their king and livestock…and instead of obeying the Lord he sets up a monument for himself (1 Sam 15.12) and takes possession of the Amalekites spoil (1 Sam 15.19)…he is told that the Lord desires obedience, not sacrifices (1 Sam 15.22) and that being rebellious and stubborn is as bad as idolatry (1 Sam 15.23) and finally that because of this God has rejected him even though God has chosen him and had Samuel anoint him…EVEN THOUGH GOD PUT HIS SPIRIT ON SAUL GOD REJECTS HIM BECAUSE HE WOULD NOT LISTEN TO GOD. Eventually it says of Saul that “the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.” (1 Sam 16.14). (Also Isaiah 63:10—grieving the Holy Spirit so that He would withdraw from us)

We learn from this that while given the Holy Spirit, we can do things that would drive Him from us. We also learn that we need to do those things which help us be a good “home” for Him within us and that help us deepen a friendship with Him.

APPENDIX 1

On the Sanctification of the Holy Myrrh (Chrism)

Icon of the Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost

On the Sanctification of the Holy Myrrh (Chrism)It is worth noting that last year (2012), through the Grace of the Holy Spirit, the Patriarch of Constantinople once again consecrated the Holy Myrrh (Chrism) that is being distributed through the churches under his care. The Holy Chrism is a visible sign of the gift of the Holy Spirit bestowed upon the Church of Christ, and is thus used in baptism services, along with consecration of churches throughout the world. As this event only occurs every ten years or so, it is worth following this great and rich mystery of our Church. Below is the encyclical of Patriarch Bartholomew, followed by other information about the sanctification of the Holy Chrism, that occurs during Holy Week.

Of The ArchdiocesesAnd Metropolises Of Our Most Holy Apostolic And Patriarchal Ecumenical Throne

Beloved children in the Lord,Each person, created in the image and likeness of God, is a temple of the Lord. Much more so, those of us who have been baptized in Christ and chrismated with Holy Myrrh, grafted into the good olive tree of the Orthodox Church, are temples of the Holy Spirit that is within us, despite our various sins, both voluntary and involuntary, which alienate us from the Lord. “If we are faithless, yet He remains faithful. He cannot deny Himself.” (2 Tim. 2.13)

This grace is bestowed on us through the Holy Myrrh because, as St. Dionysios the Areopagite states, the service of myrrh perfects divine knowledge and understanding, whereby in a sacred manner our ascent to and blessed communion with the divinity is accomplished. The Myrrh grants the sanctification of the Spirit and is offered to the faithful as spiritual chrismation, a royal gift that sanctifies the soul and body.

Through the Myrrh we receive the pledge of the Spirit, from whom every good and perfect gift derive. Our God, who granted the Holy Spirit both in the law and to His Apostles, sanctifies all those who are anointed with holy myrrh and ranks them among the choir of those saved by grace, if only they preserve their garment of incorruption spotless from all defilement and struggle not to disappoint the Holy Spirit, which they received through Holy Chrism. For the myrrh renders the pious faithful familiar to and genuine servants of God; and when we are sealed with myrrh, we are known by the holy angels and by all heavenly powers, being conformed to these.

When we have holiness as the purpose of our existence in this life, we keep the commandments of God in order that the Holy Spirit, the good Comforter, may remain with us all and that we may inherit the heavenly Kingdom of God in accordance with the words: “Be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1.16)Therefore, inasmuch as the periodical sanctification of the Holy Myrrh is a venerated institution of our Mother Church, our Modesty has, together with the Holy and Sacred Synod, decided that its consecration will be performed this year during the Holy and Great Week of our Lord’s Passion and will take place this coming Holy Thursday. The event will be preceded by the boiling of the Holy Myrrh from Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday, when we shall commemorate the sinful woman who anointed the Lord with precious fragrance and who was ultimately shown to be purer than everyone as a result of her great desire for Christ.

The sanctification of Holy Myrrh announced with this Patriarchal Encyclical constitutes a particular blessing for those of us performing, but also for all those who will attend and participate in this service. The Holy Myrrh will be distributed to other Orthodox Churches throughout the world, thereby becoming an unceasing source of sanctification, “a garment of incorruption and perfecting seal, marking those who receive the sacrament of Baptism with the sacred name of the Father and the only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit.”

We ask you, then, beloved children and brothers in the Lord, not to overlook this historical event of the Sanctification of the Holy Myrrh at our Sacred Center and to do your utmost to participate in prayer and spirit, contributing in any way but especially by your presence at the most holy

Patriarch Bartholomew consecrating the Holy Chism in 2002 at the Patriarchate of Constantinople

The Sanctification of the Holy Chrism

In the Orthodox Church, the Holy Chrism is sanctified for use in the celebration of the sacrament of Chrismation.† It is a visible sign of the transmission of gifts of the Holy Spirit to those who are baptized.

During the early years of Christianity, the transmission of the gifts of the Holy Spirit to the baptized were given by the Apostles through the "laying of hands." It I stated in the Scriptures that, "Now when the Apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands upon them and they received the Holy Spirit." (Acts 8:14 17, R.S.V.)

When the Church spread throughout the world and the number of the baptized was greatly increased, it was not possible to continue the practice of Samaria. Consequently, the Apostles introduced the use of the sanctified Chrism.† The Holy Chrism was sanctified by the Apostles and was continued thereafter by the bishops through the Apostolic Succession. The "laying on of hands" was completely replaced by the Holy Chrism to transmit gifts of the Holy Spirit.

26

Page 27: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

The use of the Holy Chrism was introduced to the Christian Church from the existing Old Testament practice. It is stated that, "The Lord said to Moses, 'Take the finest spices    12 pounds of liquid myrrh, 6 pounds of sweet smelling cinnamon, 6 pounds of sweet cane, and 12 pounds of cassia (all weighted according to official standard). Add one gallon of olive oil, and make a sacred anointing oil, mixed like perfume.''' (Exodus 30:22 25)

Over the years of its existence, the Holy Chrism has been known by many names, such as "oil," "oil of Thanksgiving," "oil of anointing," "Chrism," "Chrism of thanksgiving," "Chrism from heavens," "mystical Chrism," "myrrh," "divine myrrh," "mystical myrrh," "great myrrh," and "holy and great myrrh."† Today, the terms generally used are "Holy Myrrh" or "Holy Chrism."

The Holy Chrism is prepared from oil and another fragrant essences, which symbolize the variety of gifts of the Holy Spirit that the chrismated Christian receives. The most ancient list of materials and the aforementioned information "concerning the materials of the myrrh," which are still used today, date from the eighth century C.E.†† This list includes the materials used for the preparation and making of the Holy Chrism. At the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, there is an official list of kinds of fragrances, from which the Holy Chrism is made," which includes 57 kinds of elements (***see below).Information on how Holy Chrism was sanctified during the first centuries of Christianity is not available. The oldest reference is in The Apostolic Tradition of Hippolytos. Later, directions concerning the sanctification of the Holy Chrism were included in the Great Prayer Book (Mega Euchologion) and Goar's Euchologion. Constantinople presently uses this course in the preparation of the Holy Chrism.† During the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the present [twentieth] century, the Ecumenical Patriarchate made a special effort to revise carefully the prayer book containing the order and service of sanctification of the Holy Chrism.† The new revised edition was published for official use at the Ecumenical Throne.† Such services were published in 1890, 1912, and 1960.

In accordance with the rubrics followed by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the sanctification of the Holy Chrism takes place in the following order:

After the doxology on Palm Sunday, the Patriarch blesses the Archon of the Myrrh who, along with the other Archons, work with him to make the Holy Chrism. They wear a white tunic reaching to the ground. After blessing the Archon of the Myrrh, the Patriarch then places a towel on him.

The next day, on Holy and Great Monday, after the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, the Patriarch enters the Patriarchal Church of the Great Myrrh, Saint George, where an appropriately decorated sepulched and the boilers for the Holy Chrism are located. The Patriarch then blesses the beginning of the cycle of the sanctification of the Holy Chrism with a special holy service. Following the blessing, he sprinkles holy water on the prepared materials, the utensils to be used, and the copper boilers. Then, holding a lighted candle, he touches each boiler, placing pieces of old charred holy icons in them. Then the Patriarch reads chapters from the Holy Gospel. The readings of the lessons (pericopes) from the New Testament are then continued by those present, including hierarchs, clergy from the Patriarchate, as well as visiting clergy. This order of

27

readings continues all day on Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, and Holy Wednesday.

On Holy and Great Tuesday, after the Divine Liturgy, a small supplication canon to the Theotokos is sung at the holy sepulcher. Prayers are offered for those who contributed material, money, and effort to prepare the Holy Chrism.

On Holy and Great Wednesday, after the Divine Liturgy of the Pre sanctified gifts, the Patriarch once again comes to the holy sepulcher and, after a brief service, places in the boilers rose oil, musk, and other sweet smelling oil. On this day, all preparations for making the Holy Chrism are completed.

On Holy and Great Thursday, after Matins (Orthros) at the Patriarchal chapel of Saint Andrew and after the complete vesting of the Patriarch and the other hierarchs, the procession from the Patriarchal Palace to the Patriarchal Church begins. The bells ring during the entire procession. During the procession, the Patriarch holds the small myrrh container.† The first in order of the hierarchs holds an alabaster containing pre sanctified Chrism.† The second in order of the hierarchs holds an alabaster containing unsanctified Chrism.† The other hierarchs hold small silver vases containing Chrism from the prepared materials to be sanctified. Twenty four archimandrites hold (one on each side) 12 silver containers filled with the Chrism to be sanctified.† During the Divine Liturgy, at the appointed time after the exclamation: "And may the mercy of our Great Lord," the Grand Archimandrite exclaims, "Let us attend."† The congregation kneels, and the Patriarch sanctifies the Holy Chrism according to the rubrics.

[The Prayer of the Sanctification of the Holy Chrism (amateur translation)

O God, the Great and Exalted, Who is worshiped by all creation, the spring of wisdom and the abyss of goodness, the unlimited gulf of compassion, You, O Master Who loves man, God of the ages and wonders, Whom none is able to comprehend in mind: Look down and hearken to us, Your servants. We ask and entreat You and we pray to You, send down Your Holy Spirit and sanctify this Myrrh. And make this a myrrh of gladness of the Holy Spirit, and a myrrh of rebirth, a chrism of sanctification, a royal adornment, a breastplate of power against every attack and diabolic energy, an indelible seal, rejoicing of the heart, eternal gladness. That those who are anointed with it may shine as the stars in heaven with Your gladness, without spot or wrinkle, and be received into Your eternal resting place, and receive the confirmation of the calling from above. Through the grace and compassion and love for man of Your Only-begotten Son, through Whom You are blessed, together with Your All-holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, the sanctified Holy Chrism is transferred from the church to the Patriarchal myrrh center in reverse order according to the order of the Procession. It is in the Patriarchal myrrh center that the alabasters and the containers that contain the Holy Chrism are deposited. Followingthis transfer, the dismissal of the Divine Liturgy takes place.

28

Page 29: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

During the early centuries of Christianity, a firm tradition existed in the Church in which the Holy Chrism was sanctified only by the bishops of the Church and not by the presbyters (priests). At that time, there were no distinctions among bishops, that is among bishops of dioceses and metropolitanate bishops of greater church districts. As the years passed, however, the common right of all bishops was eventually transferred to the bishops of churches with greater status, that is, to the Patriarchs, and finally to the Ecumenical Patriarch, who today is able to transmit this right to the heads of local Orthodox churches. In other words, even though each bishop has the right to sanctify the Holy Chrism by his status as bishop, he is not permitted by canon law to do so. It appears that there are three reasons that restrict the right of sanctifying the Holy Chrism to the Ecumenical Patriarch. These reasons include: a) the scarcity of the materials and the difficulty for each bishop to prepare the Holy Chrism, b) the constant increase of dependence of the diocese on the head of the greater church and district, and c) the special position that the Ecumenical Patriarchate received through the centuries in relation to the other patriarchates of the East and that expresses the spiritual bond between the Church of Constantinople and the local churches of the people who received the Christian faith from its missionaries.

In reality, this exclusive right to sanctify the Holy Chrism of the Ecumenical Patriarchate does not mean that local churches are dependent and subordinate to Constantinople. This act of receiving the Holy Chrism from the Ecumenical Patriarchate is a tangible and visible sign of the amity and bond of local churches, patriarchates, and autocephalous churches with the Ecumenical Patriarchate.† It is a necessary sign, not a sign of superiority of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Orthodox Church, but an existing visible sign of unity among the cluster of local Orthodox churches. Nevertheless, in the Orthodox Church, the Holy Chrism, in addition to being sanctified in the Ecumenical Patriarchate, is sanctified in the contemporary patriarchates of Moscow, Belgrade, and Bucharest.

As was stated earlier, Holy Chrism is used mainly in the celebration of the sacrament of Chrismation, which takes place immediately following the sacrament of Baptism. It is, however, a separate, distinct sacrament from Baptism. According to Orthodox Church readings, through the administration of the sacrament of Chrismation, the baptized receive gifts (charismata) that are transmitted to them by the Holy Spirit.† Such gifts also help the baptized live a life in Christ, which they enter through baptism, and equip them in their struggle against sin and the attacks of evil.† Through the seal of Chrismation, the baptized attain "mature manhood, to the measure of the fullness of Christ." (Ephesians 4:13 R.S.V.)

The Holy Chrism is also used to chrismate the heterodox (non Orthodox) joining the Church, and to chrismate those fallen away from the Orthodox Faith and who are returning to the Orthodox Church.† In addition, it is also used to consecrate holy churches, altar tables, objects, and utensils, and for other sacred ceremonial circumstances. In past centuries, it was also used to anoint the Orthodox kings during their crowning.

The following is a list of dates and Patriarchs during the twentieth century when the Holy Chrism was sanctified in the Ecumenical Patriarchate:

The great number and value of these components is not spurious; they are a visible symbol of the many-varied and diverse gifts of the one Holy Spirit, and His honor and worth that surpasses all human understanding.

Only 44 of the 57 ingredients are translated – some of them may be incorrect.

Christ, the Good Samaritan, pouring the oil and wine of the Holy Mysteries on our wounds, and leading us to the Church

Prosomoia chanted during the consecration of the Holy Chrism,

in the Second Tone (amateur translation)Let us stand with fear and joy, let us stand with fervor, O faithful, in the courts of God; today a sacred mystery is accomplished, for the

myrrh of anointing, the seal of gifts, is sanctified by the hands of the archpriests. Let us offer to our God glory, for He anoints us His

children with chrism, the oil of gladness. O ranks of pious priests that lead the faithful people, let us approach the mystery with trembling, in the city of the living God, and cleanse our souls, and with pure hands, let us faithfully receive the alabaster container of the myrrh, for now the choir of the Apostles, bestow the laying on of their hands with us, and through the will of the godhead.

Hail, O spotless bride of God, for to you was granted the spirit to cry: “Abba, Father”, for the Myrrh was consecrated in your arms, the seal

of transformation that leads to grace. Within you was Christ your

APPENDIX 2

O Heavenly King Dialogue

written by Rev. Fr. Frank A. Milanese

The following is a hypothetical dialogue between a camper and the Holy Spirit, based on the Orthodox prayer;

O Heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who are in all places and fills all things; Treasury of blessings and Giver of life: come and dwell in us and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord.

CAMPER (“C”): Gee, they’ve said I need to take some time to pray and get to know God. I’ve prayed in Church before, but this is my first time at camp. Well, I guess I can pray this prayer they gave me. It’s a prayer to the Holy Spirit, whoever that is. Boy, this is strange. I’ve never prayed by myself before. What should I do? I’m embarrassed for other people to hear me pray out loud. Maybe I’ll go down by that tree so I can be by myself.

Okay. Let me start: “O Heavenly King. . .”

HOLY SPIRIT (“HS”): Yes.

C: Yipes! Who said that?

HS: Who did you ask for?

C: I didn’t ask for anyone. I was just doing this prayer they gave me.

HS: What did you say?

C: I said, “O Heavenly King. . .”

HS: That’s who I am.

C: Wait a minute. You mean I’m talking to God?

HS: Yes. You are. I’m the Holy Spirit and I’m part of the Trinity. You called me when you began my prayer.

35

Page 36: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

C: Hold on now. No one told me that I would be talking to God. I’m not sure I’m ready for this. I just want to be like everyone else and do what I’m supposed to while I’m here at camp.

HS: Well, what do you think you’re supposed to be doing here?

C: Have fun and learn about God.

HS: How do you learn about God?

C: I don’t know. People are supposed to teach us.

HS: Is that why they gave you that prayer?

C: I think so.

HS: What is prayer?

C: It’s. . . I don’t know. I guess it’s a way to talk to God.

HS: Good. Then why are you praying this prayer right now?

C: Because I’m supposed to.

HS: Why?

C: (Pause, in disbelief) Because I’m supposed to talk to God???

HS: That’s a good start.

C: (Looking at watch) Hey, you know, I don’t have a lot of time. I just wanted to say my prayer and go to breakfast. This is taking too long.

HS: Okay then. Please continue with your prayer.

C: Let’s see. Where was I? Oh yes: “O Heavenly King, Comforter. . .”

HS: Do you know why I’m called the Comforter?

C: Is this going to take long?

HS: That depends on you.

C: On me? How?

36

Page 37: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

HS: How much do you know about Me?

C: I don’t know anything about You.

HS: That’s not quite true. You know that I speak to people.

C: I do?

HS: I’m speaking to you aren’t I?

C: Oh yea. . . I guess this isn’t a dream.

HS: And I comfort people. I bring them God’s comfort; I bring them peace; I console them when they call me.

C: Console?

HS: Yes. That means to ease the grief or sorrow of someone who is hurting. That’s why I am called the Comforter. You know what else I’m called?

C: What?

HS: The Spirit of Truth.

C: Hey, that’s the next line of my prayer: “O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth.”

HS: That’s right. I’m the one that leads people to the Truth about God and His Church.

C: I thought our counselors and priests did that?

HS: They do, but with My help.

C: Where did you get your truth?

HS: From God the Father. He gave it to Me and I give it to those who ask for it.

C: (Getting more interested) What else do you do?

HS: What does my prayer say?

C: Let’s see. (Looking) Oh, here it is: “Who are present everywhere and fills all things. . .” Wait a minute. You are present everywhere? Does that mean you see and hear what’s going on? Then you were there when George was making fun of his little sister?

37

Page 38: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

HS: That’s right. And I heard what you said about your mom, too.

C: (Shocked) Whoa! You weren’t supposed to hear that. It was a private conversation.

HS: But you took me there.

C: No I didn’t. I never asked you to come. How could I? I don’t even know you.

HS: But I go everywhere you go. I live inside you.

C: You do??? (Looking) Where???

HS: Theologians have been trying to figure that out for centuries. Let’s just say that from the time you were baptized and chrismated, I’ve been with you wherever you go, and I’ve heard every word you’ve said. And guess what? When you pray silently, I hear those prayers, too.

C: You mean you can read my thoughts? Oh, boy am I in trouble. . .

HS: Let’s say that I can hear your silent prayers. Okay?

C: (Sigh of relief) Okay.

HS: And I fill all things. I want to fill you, too, if you let me.

C: I thought You were inside me. Doesn’t that mean that you fill me?

HS: Yes and no. Yes, I live inside you, but you control whether or not I fill you. And if you don’t know that I’m there, you can’t let me fill you. Lets pretend you have a bottle of perfume and put it on the table. That perfume is in the room, right.

C: Yea, right.

HS: Okay. But can you smell it? No. Not until you take the cap off the bottle. After a while the room is filled with the fragrance of the perfume. In fact, some people outside the room may be able to smell it, too. I live inside you, but you control whether or not I fill you. If you let me, I will fill you up inside, just like the perfume fills the room. I fill you when you let me control your life.

C: How do I do that?

HS: This isn’t an easy answer. But let me give you a picture that may help. Let’s say you have a ship and you are the captain. You have your hands on the rudder, steering the ship. I’m also in the control center of the ship with you, and I can help you steer because I

38

Page 39: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

know the ocean much better than you do. But I can only steer the ship if you take your hands off the rudder and allow me to steer your ship. This is an example of what it means to Walk in the Spirit. But we can talk more about this later on.

C: Okay. Hey Holy Spirit, what’s this next line mean; “Treasury of Blessings”? That sounds like I get something.

HS: That’s right. I hold all the blessings of the Trinity. God the Father has given me the authority to distribute His gifts to all the people.

C: What kind of gifts? I’ve been wanting that new Galactic MegaZord. Can you do anything about that?

HS: Sorry, I don’t do Toys-R-Us. No, My gifts are a little different. I help some people become teachers, others to become priests, and to many I give the gift of Service, or Helps. I have many gifts that I give, and I don’t always give the same gifts to everyone. But then you’re short on time, remember, why don’t you go on with your prayer.

C: (Really interested, now) But wait, I want to hear more. This is beginning to really get interesting.

HS: Tell you what. Let’s finish your prayer now, and tomorrow at your Quiet Time we’ll talk more. How’s that?

C: Okay. I can do that. Let’s see. The next line is, “and Giver of Life.” Let me guess, I’m alive today because of You? I thought my parents made me?

HS: They participated in your creation. They did their part, and I did mine, and you were born. That’s why marriage is very important, because it is a reflection of the Trinity. Man and Woman join together in marriage with God’s blessings. They join together spiritually, emotionally, and physically. The joy of their union reflects the joy God the Father has for them and wants them to have with Him. But that’s really another story we can talk about at another time.

I did my part when you were created. I also did my part when you were baptized and chrismated. I sealed your soul with a special mark that will help you get into heaven, if you protect it. I gave you this mark when the priest blessed you with the holy oil and said, “the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.” This is a very special gift you received from me. You need to protect it so you don’t lose it.

C: I’m not sure I understand this part.

HS: Ask Me again toward the end of the week. We’re just warming up right now, and I think you’ll understand better later on. What’s the next line of your prayer?

39

Page 40: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

C: “Come and dwell in us and cleanse us from every stain. . .” Hey, wait a minute. I thought you said you were with me all the time. Why does this prayer ask you to dwell in me?

HS: Remember what I said before about filling you? Well, let me give you another example for dwelling in you. Who’s your best friend?

C: C.J. He’s my buddy.

HS: How do you feel when he’s around?

C: I want to spend all my time with him.

HS: How do you feel when he has to go home?

C: Sad.

HS: How about your little brother, Jimmy?

C: (Smug) What about Jimmy?

HS: How do you feel about him?

C: He’s a pest. He’s always wanting to do what C.J. and I do. Mom says I have to let him play with us, but I don’t like it.

HS: Both Jimmy and C.J. are around all the time. But you have something special with C.J. You have a deeper relationship with him. That’s what I want with you. I’m around all the time. But I want to be close to you like you are with C.J., and like you should be with Jimmy. But you have to want that. And you have to ask. Oh yes, remember when you threw Jimmy’s Legos in the mud puddle because you were angry with him? That’s what the second part of this line is for.

C: You mean the “cleanse us from every stain” part?

HS: That’s right.

C: Oh boy. I guess I have a lot to learn. (Listens to bell ring) Hey, they just rang the bell for breakfast.

HS: Then do the last line.

C: “And save our souls, O Gracious One.” I guess there’s more to being a Christian than just being baptized, isn’t there.

40

Page 41: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

HS: Lots more. Your baptism was a new birth. And your spiritual life takes a lot of care, just like a new baby. But that’s why you’re here. If you let me, I can help you learn many new and exciting things this week. And I’ll go home with you and help you there, too. But you have to help Me. You have to listen, you have to follow, you have to do, you have to learn. If you do these things with My help, you’ll find out that you are a very special person with whom God is well pleased.

C: Gosh, You’ve told me so much. How can I remember all this stuff?

HS: Hmm. Well, you can memorize the Bible (look of anxiety on camper’s face), or you can go to a monastery for the rest of your life (look of wide-eyed shock on camper’s face), . . . Just kidding. Actually, knowing your Bible is a good start, and the monastic life is a wonderful blessing. But how about holding on to My prayer and praying it daily (look of relief on camper’s face)? I’ll help remind you when you need to remember something we’ve said. Okay?

C: Okay. Hey, this wasn’t so bad. It wasn’t what I expected, but it was kind of neat. Can I talk with you more tomorrow?

HS: Anytime you want. I’m here all the time. Bye for now.

C: Bye Bye.

APPENDIX 4

St. Basil’s Anaphora

Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you.

People: And with your spirit.

Priest: Let us lift up our hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord.

People: It is proper and right.

Priest: Master, Lord, God, worshipful Father almighty, it is truly just and right to the majesty of Your holiness to praise You, to hymn You, to bless You, to worship You, to give thanks to You, to glorify You, the only true God, and to offer to You this our spiritual worship with a contrite heart and a humble spirit. For You have given us to know Your truth. Who is worthy to praise Your mighty acts? Or to make known all Your praises? Or tell of all Your wonderful deeds at all times? Master of all things, Lord of heaven and earth, and of every creature visible and invisible, You are seated upon the throne of glory and behold the depths. You are without beginning, invisible, incomprehensible, beyond words, unchangeable. You are the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the great God and Savior of our hope, the image of Your goodness, the true seal of revealing in Himself You, the Father. He is the living Word, the true God, eternal wisdom, life, sanctification, power, and the true light. Through Him the Holy Spirit was manifested, the spirit of truth the gift of Sonship, the pledge of our future inheritance, the first fruits of eternal blessings, the life giving power, the source of sanctification through whom every rational and spiritual creature is made capable of worshiping You and giving You eternal glorification, for all things are subject to You. For You are praised by the angels, archangels, thrones, dominions, principalities, authorities, powers, and the many eyed Cherubim. Round about You stand the Seraphim, one with six wings and the other with six wings; with two they cover their faces; with two they cover their feet; with two they fly, crying out to one another with unceasing voices and ever-resounding praises:

…..

Priest: Together with these blessed powers, loving Master we sinners also cry out and say: Truly You are holy and most holy, and there are no bounds to the majesty of Your holiness. You are holy in all Your works, for with righteousness and true judgment You have ordered all things for us. For having made man by taking dust from the earth, and having honored him with Your own image, O God, You placed him in a garden of delight, promising him eternal life and the enjoyment of everlasting blessings in the observance of Your commandments. But when he

57

Page 58: The Church is the Door of/to Life – Jesus Christ is the Door of ...orthodoxcamps.org/assets/files/christianed/2013 - The... · Web view1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including

disobeyed You, the true God who had created him, and was led astray by the deception of the serpent becoming subject to death through his own transgressions, You, O God, in Your righteous judgment, expelled him from paradise into this world, returning him to the earth from which he was taken, yet providing for him the salvation of regeneration in Your Christ. For You did not forever reject Your creature whom You made, O Good One, nor did You forget the work of Your hands, but because of Your tender compassion, You visited him in various ways: You sent forth prophets; You performed mighty works by Your saints who in every generation have pleased You. You spoke to us by the mouth of Your servants the prophets, announcing to us the salvation which was to come; You gave us the law to help us; You appointed angels as guardians. And when the fullness of time had come, You spoke to us through Your Son Himself, through whom You created the ages. He, being the splendor of Your glory and the image of Your being, upholding all things by the word of His power, thought it not robbery to be equal with You, God and Father. But, being God before all ages, He appeared on earth and lived with humankind. Becoming incarnate from a holy Virgin, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, conforming to the body of our lowliness, that He might change us in the likeness of the image of His glory. For, since through man sin came into the world and through sin death, it pleased Your only begotten Son, who is in Your bosom, God and Father, born of a woman, the holy Theotokos and ever virgin Mary; born under the law, to condemn sin in His flesh, so that those who died in Adam may be brought to life in Him, Your Christ. He lived in this world, and gave us precepts of salvation. Releasing us from the delusions of idolatry, He guided us to the sure knowledge of You, the true God and Father. He acquired us for Himself, as His chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. Having cleansed us by water and sanctified us with the Holy Spirit, He gave Himself as ransom to death in which we were held captive, sold under sin. Descending into Hades through the cross, that He might fill all things with Himself, He loosed the bonds of death. He rose on the third day, having opened a path for all flesh to the resurrection from  the dead, since it was not possible that the Author of life would be dominated by corruption. So He became the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep, the first born of the dead, that He might be Himself the first in all things. Ascending into heaven, He sat at the right hand of Your majesty on high and He will come to render to each according to His works. As memorials of His saving passion, He has left us these gifts which we have set forth before You according to His commands. For when He was about to go forth to His voluntary, ever memorable, and life-giving death, on the night on which He was delivered up for the life of the world, He took bread in His holy and pure hands, and presenting it to You, God and Father, and offering thanks, blessing, sanctifying, and breaking it:

Priest: He gave it to His holy disciples and apostles saying: Take, eat, this is my body which is broken for you and for the forgiveness of sins.

…..

Priest: Therefore, most holy Master, we also, Your sinful and unworthy servants, whom You have made worthy to serve at Your holy altar, not because of our own righteousness (for we have not done anything good upon the earth), but because of Your mercy and compassion, which You have so richly poured upon us, we dare to approach Your holy altar, and bring forth the symbols of the holy Body and Blood of Your Christ. We pray to You and call upon You, O Holy of Holies, that by the favor of Your goodness, Your Holy Spirit may come upon us and upon

the gifts here presented, to bless, sanctify, and make this bread to be the precious Body of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ.

(He blesses the holy Bread.)

Deacon: Amen.

Priest: And this cup to be the precious Blood of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ.

(He blesses the holy Cup.)

Deacon: Amen.

(He blesses them both.)

Priest: Shed for the life and salvation of the world.

Deacon: Amen. Amen. Amen.

Priest: And unite us all to one another who become partakers of the one Bread and the Cup in the communion of the one Holy Spirit. Grant that none of us may partake of the holy Body and Blood of Your Christ to judgment or condemnation; but, that we may find mercy and grace with all the saints who through the ages have pleased You: forefathers, fathers, patriarchs, prophets, apostles, preachers, evangelists, martyrs, confessors, teachers, and every righteous spirit made perfect in faith.

……

Priest (in a low voice): Remember, Lord, all Orthodox bishops who rightly teach the word of Your truth. Remember Lord, my unworthiness according to the multitude of Your mercies; forgive my every transgression, both voluntary and involuntary. Do not take away the grace of Your Holy Spirit from these gifts presented because of my sins. Remember, Lord, the presbyters, the diaconate in Christ, and every order of the clergy, and do not confound any of us who stand about Your holy altar. Visit us with Your goodness, Lord; manifest Yourself to us through Your rich compassion. Grant us seasonable weather and fruitful seasons; send gentle showers upon the earth so that it may bear fruit; bless the crown of the year of Your goodness. Prevent schism in the Church; pacify the raging of the heathen. Quickly stop the uprisings of heresies by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Receive us all into Your kingdom. Declare us to be sons and daughters of the light and of the day. Grant us Your peace and love, Lord our God, for You have given all things to us.

Priest: And grant that with one voice and one heart we may glorify and praise Your most honored and majestic name, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages.

…..

Deacon: For the precious Gifts offered and consecrated, let us pray to the Lord.

People: Lord, have mercy.

Deacon: That our loving God who has received them at His holy, heavenly, and spiritual altar as an offering of spiritual fragrance, may in return send upon us divine grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit, let us pray.

People: Lord, have mercy.

Deacon: Having prayed for the unity of the faith and for the communion of the Holy Spirit, let us commit ourselves, and one another, and our whole life to Christ our God.

People: To You, O Lord.

Priest (in a low voice): Our God, the God who saves, You teach us justly to thank You for the good things which You have done and still do for us. You are our God who has accepted these Gifts. Cleanse us from every defilement of flesh and spirit, and teach us how to live in holiness by Your fear, so that receiving the portion of Your holy Gifts with a clear conscience we may be united with the holy Body and Blood of Your Christ. Having received them worthily, may we have Christ dwelling in our hearts, and may we become the temple of Your Holy Spirit. Yes, our God, let none of us be guilty before these, Your awesome and heavenly Mysteries, nor be infirm in body and soul by partaking of them unworthily. But enable us, even up to our last breath, to receive a portion of Your holy Gifts worthily, as provision for eternal life and as an acceptable defense at the awesome judgment seat of Your Christ. So that we also, together with all the saints who through the ages have pleased You, may become partakers of Your eternal good things, which You, Lord, have prepared for those who love You.

Priest: And make us worthy, Master, with confidence and without fear of condemnation, to dare call You, the heavenly God, FATHER, and to say:

THE LORD'S PRAYER

…..

Deacon: Let us bow our heads to the Lord.

People: To You, O Lord.

Priest (in a low voice): Lord Master, the Father of mercies and God of every consolation, bless sanctify, guard, fortify, and strengthen those who have bowed their heads to You. Distance them from every evil deed. Lead them to every good work and make them worthy to partake without condemnation of these, Your most pure and life-giving Mysteries, for the forgiveness of sins and for the communion of the Holy Spirit.

APPENDIX 5

"O Heavenly King!": teachings on the Holy Spirit revealed in prayer

by Rev. Fr. Andrew Jarmus,Director of Missions and Education, UOCC,Winnipeg, Manitoba

One of the best-known prayers in our Church is the prayer to the Holy Spirit, which begins every rite and service known to Orthodoxy: "O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, everywhere present and filling all things. Treasury of blessings and Giver-of-Life: come and abide in us, cleanse us of every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One."

This prayer to the Spirit opens every order of service because we believe that it is only through the Holy Spirit that our life as Christians is effective for our healing and sanctification. It is the Holy Spirit who guides us, who encourages us, and who fills us with the life-giving grace of God the Son and the love of God the Father. It is for this reason that during the Divine Liturgy, we pray that we may be partakers in the communion of the Holy Spirit.

The Orthodox Church does not have a great deal of doctrine concerning the Holy Spirit, because it is the function of the God the Spirit to make us understand the teachings of God the Son. In turn the teachings of the Son reveal to us the will of God the Father. In other words, we do not know much about the Spirit because little has been revealed about Him. Nevertheless, much of what we do believe about the Holy Spirit is found in the first half of the prayer "O Heavenly King." Let us take a quick look at the various ways that we call upon the Holy Spirit in this prayer, and we will begin to understand better His importance in our life.

"O Heavenly King": This statement affirms that the Holy Spirit is God, since God alone is the King of Heaven. This relates to the words of Jesus in John:4, "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

"Comforter": This is the title of the Holy Spirit given by Jesus in the Gospel of St. John, chapters 15 and 16; in Greek it is "Paraclete." In English editions of Scriptures "Paraclete" is sometimes translated as "Helper". Who does the Holy Spirit comfort or help? The Spirit offers comfort/help to us, the Christian peoples. Why? Because Christians need comfort, help and encouragement in the face of the many trial and tribulations that we face both as individuals and collectively as the Church.

"Spirit of Truth": This again is a title given by Jesus in John 15 and 16. In these chapters, which come from His mystical supper before His death and third day rising, Jesus speaks of the function of the Holy Spirit. He says that there are many things that Jesus still has to teach His followers which they are not yet ready to bear. However, when the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide them into an understanding and an embracing of these teachings. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, because He reveals to us throughout history the Truth of Jesus' Good News, and how we can apply this Gospel to our contemporary lives.

"Everywhere present and filling all things": Psalm 139 affirms these two attributes of the Spirit most eloquently: "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Hades, behold, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb."

"Treasury of blessings": St. Paul, in Galatians 5:22&23, says, "When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." In 1 Corinthians 12, the Holy Apostle Paul asserts that "there are many kinds of spiritual gifts, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the Source of them all."

"Giver of Life": In Romans 8:11 we read that "the Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as He raised Christ from the dead, He will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living in you." The Holy Spirit is the giver of life everlasting to all who place their hope in the Son of God. Also, in a universal way, the Holy Spirit is the One who holds all that exists together; thus, the Spirit is the giver, not only of eternal human life, but of all life.

Two things, hopefully, become clear from this short prayer study. First of all, the words of our prayers are not selected simply for their aesthetic quality. Rather, they are carefully chosen to bring forth in timeless prose the Truths of the Gospel which lead us to life everlasting. Because we repeat these prayers so often, it is very easy to simply skim over them without much thought. It is good, then, to take some time every now and then to look deeper into the words, that we may appreciate them more fully, and say them with that much more attention and conviction.

Secondly, the words of this specific prayer form a small confession of faith about the Holy Spirit. Through "O Heavenly King" we are taught that the Holy Spirit is God Himself, that He offers those who turn to Him the strength and perspective necessary to live Christianity to its fullest. Also we are taught that there is no place where the Spirit is not, and that there is no gift or blessing which we receive in our lives that does not come from Him

It is on the foundation of these beliefs that we continue the prayer "O Heavenly King": "come and abide in us, cleanse us of every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One." It is not just any spirit that we invite to live within us, but the Spirit of God. It is not just any teaching in which we place our hope, but the Truth which is revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. It is not just any philosophy, movement or person that can grant us cleansing, healing and salvation, but only God the Holy Spirit who is the Source of all that is good, of all that gives life, and of all that is true.

APPENDIX 6

Scripture passages1. Eph 6:14-17 – the armor of God including the sword of the Spirit which is word of God2. Acts 7:1-60 – St. Stephen – 7.51 – “you stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.” – Note: we can resist the Holy Spirit as did the Jews – this is important because He is given to us, but we can resist Him, not provide a suitable home for Him in us, and therefore He leaves us, so we must say, “…take not Your Holy Spirit from me…” (Psalm 51)3. John 14:16 -- I will send you another helper, the comforter4. Acts 10:38 – “Christ is the Son of the living God…anointed with the Holy Spirit. “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit.”5. 1 Samuel 16:3 – example of anointing in the Old Testament6. Psalm 50/517. Spirit prays in us with sighs too deep for words (St. Paul – but where?)8. Crying out “Abba, Father” (St. Paul – where?)8. Rom 7.6 – “…so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.” Note: There is new life in the Spirit…in fact it is the new life OF the Spirit” it is our life but now life OF the Spirit. Note: What does this mean? We are new, renewed, something is different about us, genuinely different, God created but God also renewed.8. Rom 8 – 4 – we no longer walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit….and so we set our minds on things of the Spirit(5)…to set the mind on flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace (6)…but we are not in the flesh, we are in the Spirit, IF, IF, IF in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you (9) – Note: THAT is a BIG IF, and one IF that must be answered by us….”Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him (9) – Note: need His Spirit to belong to Him. Spirit will give life to us if He is in us (10-11)…but if we live by the Spirit and therefore put to death the deeds of the body we will live – Note: so we must live according to the Spirit, not just have been given Him…we must live by Him and therefore will have life…..if we are led by the Spirit then we are sons of God (14)…. When we cry “Abba! Father!” it is the Spirit Himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God…and therefore heirs if we suffer with Christ (15-16-17)…Spirit helps us in our weakness (26) because we don’t know how to pray, but Spirit intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words (26) and this is according to the will of God that the Spirit would intercede for the saints (27) – Note: This is both a comfort and cause to fear for God Himself is in us and intercedes for us to save us, provided we don’t push Him away or reject Him.9. Rom 15. 19 – “…b the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Holy Spirit…” Note: Paul understands that it is by the power of the Holy Spirit that he has preached the gospel of Christ10. 1 Cor 6. 11 – “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” Note: Can connect this with the Ablution after the Baptism and Chrismation – shows that we are made new – no longer the idolaters, greedy, drunkards, etc that St. Paul speaks of, those that will not inherit the kingdom of God. So we, having been washed…can inherit the kingdom of God if only we live like we are washed.

64

11. 1 Cor 6.17, 19 – “But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him….Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” Note: Stress that we spend a lot of time and money on the Church building because it is a house for God – many prayers, services, cleaning, care ,etc. But here St. Paul talks about not the church temple but our bodies being temples for God’s Holy Spirit. Don’t we have an obligation to keep them “clean”, pure, good homes for the Spirit? How do we do that? Why would we do that? Because as he says, “you are not your own…we are bought, bought by the precious Blood of Christ. Does that mean anything to us? Do we care? Why not just live any way we want? St. Paul then says “So glorify God in your body.”…By doing good things with it, to it, for it, for others. Be a true temple of the Holy Spirit and recognize that others are temples of the very same Holy Spirit.12. 1 Cor 12.3 – “…no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” – Note: meaning cannot believe without the Holy Spirit…only by the Holy Spirit are we able to see/know/believe, otherwise we just in darkness. Note: St. Hesychios the Priest in On Watchfulness and Holiness says in #29 – “In other words, it is the Spirit who mystically confirms Christ’s presence in us – it is the Spirit who initiates/begins/awakens man’s intellect so that it can see clearly. 4 – “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit…7 – “…to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” Note: whatever gifts we have they are manifestations/appearances of the Holy Spirit working in us and they are meant to be used for a purpose. What purpose? The common good – of the Church, of the people, of the world. Note the varieties of gifts (and there are more) in vv.8-10. 11 – “All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as He wills.” Note: to EACH ONE as the Spirit wills – so all of us have something – what is it? How do we discover it? How do we develop it? How do we offer it back? St. Mark the Ascetic in No Righteousness by Works #115 – “The grace of the Spirit is one and unchanging, but energizes in each one of us as He wills.”13. 1 Cor 12.13 – “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…and all were made to drink of one Spirit.” Note: It is by the operation of the Holy Spirit that all things happen in the Church. What’s more is that we are all made to “DRINK OF ONE SPIRIT”. How drink? From the waters of the Church, the waters of the Sacraments, the waters of the gift(S) we’ve been given – from Christ flows that living water – it is the Spirit Himself as told to the Samaritan Woman by the well. Come drink and you will never be thirsty. Note: St. Mark the Ascetic (No Righteousness by Works) #118 says “The Spirit in all his energies remains what He is, and in a divine manner He gives to each person what is needful. ON those who have been baptized He pours Himself out in His fullness like the sun. Each of us is illumined by Him to the extent to which we hate the passions that darkens us and get rid of them. But in so far as we have a love for them and dwell on them, we remain in darkness.14. 2 Cor 3.3 – “…and you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” Note: God writes on our hearts with the Spirit, He writes the Spirit on our hearts – we as “letters” are meant to be read by all mankind (v.2) – we are meant to reveal Him in this letter – not possible without the Spirit being written on us, not possible without Him writing with the Spirit on us.15. 2 Cor 3.6 – “…who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not in a written code but in the Spirit; for the written code kills, but the Spirit gives life.” Note: This new covenant that is written on the heart by God with the Spirit is a covenant which requires

65

competent ministers who are made competent by God…but this new covenant gives life because it is in the Spirit and the Spirit gives life. How? Why? In what way? Because it gives us the Life of Christ, the Life in Christ, in Whom is Life…and He promised us life and life abundantly…but again this is only possible in and through the Holy Spirit, because it is only He who gives life…not the written Law, not any Law, not any human institution, not anything of our own creation, but real life, the only life, life as a citizen/member of the kingdom of God only comes through the Spirit of God, the Spirit of that Kingdom, the Holy Spirit who is the Giver of Life (God’s life to us, Christ to us and therefore Life). This is life from within, not from without…the Law was our keeper, our guardian, but not the Spirit is our Life and that Spirit has been given to us and with Him God has written His “Law” on our hearts.16. 2 Cor.3.17-18 – “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom….we all…are being changed into His likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” Note: It is by the Lord who is the Spirit, that we are changed/transformed into His likeness from one degree of glory to the next. This is not possible to anyone of us without God’s Spirit. The Lord is the Spirit…in other words it’s not like the Spirit is another God…what kind of freedom? Freedom to grow up in Christ from one degree of glory to the next. Think of steps, from one step to the next, until you are at the top of the staircase – story of racing Aunt Celia’s elevator up and down…going up was tough – 18 stories racing – but when you get to the top great feeling and then what a view. A view from the Kingdom…what a view.17. 2 Cor 5.5 – “He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.” Note: Why is the Spirit so important to us, in us? Because He is the guarantee that we will be clothed in immortality, that that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life – v.4. 18. Gal 3.2ff – Connection of receiving Spirit with faith. Spirit does not come through works of the Law but by the hearing with faith. Note: So in order to cultivate and keep the Spirit, faith is required of us…to hear the Gospel with faith, the teaching of the Church with faith, prayers with faith, etc. Without faith, the Spirit cannot grow in us. Also v.14 – “….that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”19. Gal 4.6 – “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So through God you are not longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir.” Note: Connection of being sons (showing ourselves sons) and the sending and receipt of the Holy Spirit, who calls out in us/from us to God saying ‘Father!’20. Gal 5.16-25 – Talking about the opposition between the Spirit and the flesh, between the desires of the Spirit and the desires of the flesh. Shows the works of the flesh, and then speaks of the fruit of the Spirit…v.25 – “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” Note: YES WE DO LIVE BY T HE SPIRIT AND THEREFORE IN ORDER TO HAVE LIFE WE MUST WALK BY HIM AS WELL. THE ONE IS WHO WE ARE, THE OTHER IS WHAT WE DO WITH WHO WE ARE . THE ONE IS WHO WE ARE THE OTHER SHOWS WHETHER WE KNOW IT OR NOT. THE ONE IS WHO WE ARE, THE OTHER SHOWS WHETHER OR NOT WE CARE WHO WE ARE. THE ONE IS WHO WE ARE, THE OTHER DETERMINES WHO WE WILL BECOME.13. Gal. 6.8 – “…but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” Note: Sowing to the Spirit is doing those things which would allow Him to grow in us, or better yet for us to grow in Him.

66

14. Eph 1.13 – “In Him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.” Note: Connect this with Chrismation – St. Paul talks about the seal. Then also it is the Spirit who is the guarantee of our place in the Kingdom, of what we will inherit. I/we want that guarantee and He is given to us.15. Eph 2.18, 22 – “…in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” – Note: talking of the entire Church being built up, and we being built into it in the Spirit.16. Eph 4.3 – “…eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Note: there is a unity in the Spirit, it is real, but we must strive to maintain it. There is a striving and effort in this.17. Eph 4.30 – “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Note: The seal is for preservation and for protection – we need it, but to maintain it we cannot offend the Spirit.18. Eph. 5.18 –“…but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns…” Note: we are called to be full of the Holy Spirit, not other things. If we are satisfied with other things, we will not care to be filled with the Holy Spirit.19. Eph 6.17-18 – “Take…the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit.”20. 1 Thess 5.19 – “Do not quench the Spirit…” Note: This can happen. We can put that flame out, the flame out by our manner of life and by our unbelief. St. Diadochos of Photiki says in On Spiritual Knowledge #28 – that this means ‘Do not grieve the goodness of the Holy Spirit by wicked actions or wicked thoughts, lest you be deprived of this protecting light’ The Spirit, since He is eternal and life-creating, cannot be quenched; but if He is grieved – that is if He withdraws – He leaves the intellect without the light of spiritual knowledge, dark and full of gloom….82 – So long as the Holy Spirit is in us, Satan cannot enter the depths of the soul and remain there…..21. 2 Thess 2.13 – “…because God chose you from the beginning to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.” Note: can link to Chrismation.22. 1 John 4.1-13, v.13 – “By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His own Spirit.”22. 1 John 5.7-8 – “And the Spirit is the witness, because the Spirit is the truth. There are three witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree.” Note: Spirit as witness to Him who came to save us, who did save us, who was sent by the Father. WE can’t believe much in the world anymore, but we can believe the witness of the Holy Spirit. “but He is not one of us”, true but He testifies to us as witness so that we may know and believe.23. Jude 19 – “…pray in the Holy Spirit…” Note: how do we do this?24. Rev 2.7, 11, 17 & 29 (also 3.6, 13, 22) – “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Note: The Spirit of God is always speaking to us, and sometimes through us, but He is always convicting us because He is the Spirit of Truth.

10. John 4:24 – “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”11. John 14:26, 27 – “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you…” Note: It is the Spirit who will work to help them remember and give over to us what Christ said.

67

11. John 15.26 – “But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me…” Note; Christ will send from the Father, who proceeds from the Father -- He is the Spirit of truth – to know truth, to be truth, to live truth, to follow truth requires the Spirit of truth.12. John 16:7 – it was to our advantage that Christ went away, because then the Counselor could come, could be sent by Him to us.12. John 16.13 – “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears he will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you…” Note: Again the Spirit of truth who will guide us into ALL the truth, not just part.13. John 14:16, 17 – “And I will pray the Father, and he will give ou another Counselor, to be with you for ever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive…you know Him, for He dwells with you, and will be in you.” Note: here is the promise for us, it is a promise to last forever.14. 2 Cor 13:1415. Acts 2 – the day of Pentecost16. Joel – “In the last days, I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and daughters will prophesy.” – this was part of Peter’s response in Acts 2 to the people who thought they were drunk.17. John 1:29-34 – “And John bore witness, ‘I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven…he on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”18. 1 Cor 13:1319. 1 Cor 12:3120. Gal 5:22-2320. Gal 5:25 – the new life that St. Paul defines as “living in the Spirit and waling in the Spirit.”21. 1 Cor 4:722. 2 Cor. 13:1423. John 3:1-12 – “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God…so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Note: This is our “destiny”, this is God’s plan for us, this is what He has given and desires for us – renewing, re-birth through water and the Spirit.23. John 3.34 – “…it is not by measure that He gives the Spirit…” Note: not just sprinkled but poured out on us.24. John 16.13ff25. 1 Cor 12.3-4 – No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except in the Holy Spirit…26. Eph 2. 18-2227. 1 Cor 12.728. Isaiah 61:1 – The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me.29. Psalm 45:7 – Therefore God , your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows30. 1 Cor 12.13 – “For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body.”31. Acts 1:5 – “You shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit”32. Lk 3:16 – “he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit”33. Dan 14.33ff – The Spirit is believed to have been inspiring Habakkuk and Daniel in the Babylon at the same time, though they were in different places

34. Jer 20.2 – the same is true for Jeremiah in the dungeon and Ezekiel by the river Chebar (Ezekiel 1.1)35. Wis 1.7 – “The Spirit of the Lord fills the world”36. Psalm 139.7 – “…where shall I go from They Spirit or where shall I flee from Thy presence?”37. Hag 2.4-5 – “I am with you, says the Lord of hosts…My Spirit abides among you.”38. Gen 1.2 – “…and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters” – He was there from the beginning.39. Gen 41.38 – “…’Can we find such a man as this, in whom is the Spirit of God?’” – Pharoah talking of Joseph who was interpreting his dream for him.40. Ex 31.3 (35.31 also)– “and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship….” – this is what God said to Moses when he gave him instructions about building and adorning the Tent of Meeting41. Num 11.17, 25ff – “…and I will take some of the spirit which is upon you and put it upon them…” “…Then the Lord…took some of the spirit that was upon him and put it upon the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied…” – this is when the people of Israel became to great in number for Moses to hear all their cases and seventy others were appointed to help him bear this burden. Like a prefigurement of Pentecost with the cloud coming down and the spirit being given and prophesying taking place….and then Eldad and Medad remaining in the camp and prophesying…and finally Moses saying “…would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and the Lord would put his spirit upon them!” Note: this does happen in our day and age, for all of us have the Spirit poured out upon us.42. Num 27.18 – “…Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit…”43. Judges 3:10 – “”The Spirit of the Lord came upon him [i.e. Othniel], and he judged Israel…” – was able to judge and was able to fight for Israel against King of Mesopotamia – but only because Spirit of the Lord came upon him – before this nothing. Just as Apostles had to wait for the Spirit to come before they went out to preach – without Him they could do, were commanded not to do, anything.44. Judges 6:34 – “But the Spirit of the Lord took possession of Gideon…” – Note: took possession of Gideon – with the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit God takes possession of us, we are his, his soldiers, his warriors, to do His will, as then Gideon did and defeated (by God’s power with only a few men, not with the orginal 32,000, but with only 300 put the Midianites to flight – by God’s power and in a way that was not expected – such is the power of God, such is the power of His Holy Spirit that rests upon us, whom we are sealed with to do the will of God in everything.45. Judges 11.29 – “Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah….” – after this he conquers the Ammonites, but he makes a vow to sacrifice to the Lord the person who comes out of his house to greet him when he gets home and it is his daughter, his only child….she is given 2 months to bewail her virginity and then he sacrifices her to the Lord.46. Judges 13.25 – “And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him…” Begins to stir Samson.47. Judges 14.6 – “…and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion asunder as one tears a kid…” Note: this is what Samson does by the power of the Holy Spirit. Are we not warriors with the Spirit, but without the Spirit we are nothing…48. Judges 14.19 – “And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty men of the town….” This is what Samson does to get the festal garments for his wedding guests who solved his riddle.

Judges 15.14 – “…and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the ropes which were on his arms became as flax…found a fresh jawbone of an ass…and with it slew a thousand men…” Note: when he put to flight the Philistines50. 1 Sam 10.6 – “Then the spirit of the Lord will come mightily upon you, and you shall prophesy with them and be turned into another man….When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart…” Note: This is what Samuel says to Saul after he has been anointed to be king over Israel – he prophesies with God’s prophets, but this being “turned into another man” is key – this is what happens to us…we are made new by God’s Spirit – we are recreated as it were – with God’s Spirit we become something we could not and were not before. And note that God gave him another heart, it was a heart filled with the Holy Spirit, not a physically new heart, but a heart transformed.51. 1 Sam 16.13 – “…and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward…” – when Samuel anointed him to be king in Saul’s place. Note: and what happens to Saul right after it says:1 Sam 16:14 – “…Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him…” Note: without the Spirit of God we are nothing and would be tormented by another spirit, an evil spirit.52. 2 Chr 24.20 – “Then the Spirit of God took possession of Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest…” Then he is able to stand before the king and people and tell them that they are transgressing the commandment of the Lord and are therefore not prospering. He is stoned for this and dies.53. Neh 9.20 & 30 – It was by the Spirit of God that Israel was instructed and warned by God in the wilderness – but they would not listen.54. Job 34.14 – “If He should take back His spirit to Himself, and gather to Himself His breath, all flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust.” Note: without God’s Spirit we are lifeless. No life without His Spirit, no understanding, no faith, not alive….55. Psalm 51.10ff – “…and take not thy holy Spirit from me…” Note: we ask God not to cast us away from His presence and not to take His Holy Spirit from us -- this is linked to joy, the joy of God’s salvation and strengthening/upholding us with a willing spirit.56. Psalm 104.30 – “When Thou sendest forth Thy Spirit, they are created; and Thou renewest the face of the ground.” Note: note the Life-creating Spirit (the Giver of Life) and how the Spirit renews everything, all of creation not just us.57. Psalm 143:10 – “…Let Thy good spirit lead me on a level path.” – Note: it is the Spirit that leads us on the path of salvation…without the Spirit it is all darkness.58. Is 11.2 – “….and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of theh Lord shall rest upon Him, an the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.” -- Note the prophecy of Isaiah about the Incarnation, that God’s Spirit will be upon the One who is to come.59. Is 32.15 – “…until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high…” Note: this is a prophecy of how the Spirit will renew and re-create everything, how all will be restored by the outpouring of the Spirit.60. Is 42.1 – “…Behold my servant…I have put my Spirit upon him, hewill bring forth justice to the nations.” – Note that we must be the Servant to receive the Spirit. Spirit will enable justice for the nations.61. Is 44.3 – “…I will pour my Spirit upon your descendants…” (see 11.2, 42.1 and now 44.3 – all prophecies that God’s Spirit will be given

62. Is 61.1 – “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lrod has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted…brokenhearted…captives…those who are bound…comfort all who mourn…oil of gladness…” Talking of the Messiah, the anointed One – Jesus will read this passage in the synagogue, it is He to whom this refers63. Is 63.10 – “But they rebelled and grieved His holy Spirit…” Note – they do this and grieve the Holy Spirit.. and following 63.11ff – “…put in the midst of them His holy Spirit…the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest” – talking about Israel coming out of Egypt and being led/helped by God’s Spirit.64. Ez 3, 11, etc. – often taken up by the Spirit and shown things and things revealed to him – such is the revelatory nature of the Holy Spirit65. Joel 2.28-29 – “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pur out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions...in those days, I will pour out my spirit” Note: the Spirit will be poured out upon all flesh – God will do this – for Joel this might have meant all Jews, but for Peter at Pentecost (Acts 2.17) it meant all nations. This has come to pass for us.66. Mic 3:8 – “But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.” Spirit given for a purpose, and he is not like others who do not have the Spirit (see Is 11.2, 61.1 and Ezek 2.2)67. Zech 12.10 – “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication, so that , when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a first-born.”68. Mt 3:16 (Mk 1.10, Jn 1.32) – “And when Jesus was baptized…and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on Him…” Account of John witnessing to the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ after He had been baptized.69. Mt. 4.1 (Mk. 1.12) – “The Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”70. Mt. 10.20 – “…for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” The Lord telling His Apostles not to worry what they are to say when they are delivered up to the rulers of the world…God will grant them what to say – it will be the Spirit of their Father who will speak.71. Mt. 12.1872. Lk 1 & 2 – the Spirit working 73. Lk 2:27 – Simeon being inspired by the Spirit – our St. Symeon’s prayer was inspired by the Holy Spirit – Symeon spoke in the Spirit, with the Spirit and we sing at end of every Vespers.74. Lk 11.13 – “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Note: we should be asking for Holy Spirit, and our Lord is talking about the ultimate gift for us, the key to unlock the door to the Kingdom, the key by which we enter, without which nothing is possible for us in Christ.

APPENDIX 7

Select Quotes from the Philokalia regarding the Holy Spirit

13. St. Mark the Ascetic (No Righteousness by Works) 64 – Cannot seek and acquire the energies of the Spirit without first actively observing the commandments. Note: This is the link between our discussion this year and our discussion last year: If you would enter life, keep the commandments. The commandments are full of life for us, in them we find life. Because He who gave them is Life – to walk and live that Life we must walk and live the commandments. When we do, we are then able to seek the energies of the Spirit because we are within that Life, not trying to gain that life some other way – “He who climbs in some other way is nothing but a thief and a robber….no one enters the sheepfold but through Me…14. St. Mark the Ascetic -- #149 – it is necessary to have the grace of the Holy Spirit energizing the heart and so, in proportion to this energizing, to enter into the kingdom of heaven.15. St. John of Karpathos -- #80 (Texts for the Monks in India) – if the base of a felled tree that has grown old in earth and rock ‘will bud at the scent of water…like a young plant’ (Job 14.9), it is also possible for us to be awakened by the power of the Holy Spirit and to flower with the incorruptibility that is ours by nature, bearing fruit like a young plant, even though we have fallen into sin.” Note: We can point to an old stump and show how it can begin to grow a shoot again, and maybe even find an example near where we are talking with campers. while sin will dull the light of the Holy Spirit in us, while if we offend the Holy Spirit He withdraws from us bec He cannot abide where sin does, it is still possible for us to bear fruit again as a young plant even if we have fallen into sin, but the longer we remain in sin, the dryer the ground and the more difficult it is for water to seep into it – example of hard ground: even water cannot penetrate, or it takes much longer for it to get into the ground.16. St. John of Karpathos again -- #81 – If we grow despondent at our sins, to the soul that doubts how it can ever give birth to Christ through great acts of holiness, these words are said, “The Holy Spirit shall come upon you” (Lk 1:35). Where the Holy Spirit is present, do not expect any more the sequence and laws of nature and habit. The Holy Spirit whom we worship is all-powerful, and in an astonishing way He brings into existence what does not as yet exist within us. The intellect that was previously defeated He now makes victorious; for the Paraclete who in compassion comes upon us from above ‘is higher than all’ (Jn 3.31), and He raises us above all natural impulses and demonic passions. Note: With God all things are possible, but without Him nothing is possible. With the Spirit, all the natural order is overcome and/or renews (Thou shall send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created; and Though shall renew the face of the earth – Ps 104.30). This can and does happen so we cannot despair but we must continually ask God, pray to God for help, for assistance – again nothing is possible to him.17. St. Diadochos of Photiki -- #74 – The love which the Holy Spirit produces in us does not need to be “fanned” by anything outside us, but from within the heart and through the heart it makes the whole person rejoice with a boundless love. The warmth the Holy Spirit engenders in the heart is completely peaceful and enduring – its heat does not need to be fanned by anything outside the heart.18. St. Hesychios the Priest in On Watchfulness and Holiness says in #27 – in the spiritual slaughter of sins (the “children of Babylon”) we will be blessed by the Holy Spirit….but we must be as still in our soul as a spider is on its web in this struggle.

19. St. Mark the Ascetic in No Righteousness by Works #115 – “The grace of the Spirit is one and unchanging, but energizes in each one of us as He wills.” (1 Cor. 12.11) Note: The Spirit doesn’t change, His power doesn’t wax and wane, He is God unchanging, ever the same, and yet energizes us as He so chooses. Meaning, manifests in us in various ways.20. St. Diadochos of Photiki (On Spiritual Knowledge) -- #34 – “…so the soul readily grows calm when anointed with the grace of the Holy Spirit.”21. St. Maximos the Confessor (First Century of Various Texts) -- #72 – The Holy Spirit is not absent from any created being, especially not from one which in any way participates in intelligence…#73 – The Holy Spirit is present unconditionally in all things, in that He embraces all things, provides for all, and vivifies the natural seeds within them.22. St. Theodoros the Great Ascetic (A Century of Spiritual Texts) -- #7 – if the soul fights against the passions and if the soul lives in accordance with God’s law…”the grace fo the Holy Spirit will be present in it, teaching it spiritual knowledge, so that it may be strengthened in what is good and rise to higher levels.” Note: There are conditions for us on receiving the Holy Spirit – there is a necessary ascetic way for all of us.23. St. Maximos the Confessor (Second Century on Theology) -- # 63 – Some are reborn through water and the spirit (Jn3.5); others receive baptism in the Holy Spirit and in fire (Mt. 3.11). I take these four things – water, spirit, fire and Holy Spirit – to mean one and the same Spirit of God….the single identical Spirit takes His different names from the different ways in which He acts on each person.24. St. Maximos the Confessor (Fourth Century on Love) -- #78 – “God, who has promised you eternal blessings (Titus 1.2) and has given you the pledge of the Spirit in your hearts (2 Cor 1.22) has commanded you to pay attention to how you live, so that the inner man may be freed from the passions and begin here and now to enjoy these blessings.25. St. Maximos the Confessor (First Century on Various Texts) -- #96 – St. Paul refers to the different energies of the Holy Spirit as different gifts of grace, stating that they are all energized by one and the same Holy Spirit (1.Cor 12.11). The ‘manifestation of the Spirit’ (1 Cor 12.7) is given according to the measure of every man’s faith through participation in a particular gift of grace. Thus every believer is receptive to the energy of the Spirit in a way that corresponds to his degree of faith and the state of his soul (this must be where he is ‘at’ in the struggle against passions); and this energy grants him the capacity needed to carry out a particular commandment. Note: the connection between the energy of the Holy Spirit and the capacity to carry out a particular commandment – not possible without the Holy Spirit.

#97 – “….For every capacity for fulfilling a commandment is called a gift of the Spirit.” Note: again how it is a gift of the Spirit to be able to fulfill a commandment, but we receive that capacity according to the measure of our faith and the state of our soul.26. St. Maximos the Confessor (Third Century on Various Texts) -- # 34 – “In each of us the energy of the Spirit is made manifest according to the measure of his faith (Rom 12.6). Therefore each of us is the steward of his own grace and, if we think logically, we should never envy another person the enjoyment of his gifts, since the disposition which makes us capable of receiving divine blessings depends on ourselves. Note: no need to be jealous of another’s gifts because ours depends not on them, or our relation to them, but on our inward disposition.

#35 – Our actions disclose the measure of our faith, and the strength of our faith determines the measure of grace that we receive

#37 – A good conscience confers on us the power of love, since it is not guilty of any transgression of the commandments.

27. St. Maximos (First Century on Various Texts) -- #59 – “The holy Gospel teaches men to reject life according to the flesh an to embrace life according to the Spirit.” 28. St. Irenaeus (Ag. Her. 3.24.1) – “And herein has been bestowed on us our means of communion with Christ, namely the Holy Spirit, the pledge of immortality, the strengthening of our faith, the ladder by which we ascend to God….for where the Church is, there is the Spirit of God; and where the Spirit of God is, there is the Church and every kind of grace.” Note: The Spirit called ‘the ladder’ by which we ascend to God.29. St. Irenaeus (Ag Her. 5.9.2-3) – “Without the Spirit of God we cannot be saved.” “Receiving the Spirit, we walk in newness of life, in obedience to God.”30. St. Irenaeus (AG Her 5.36.2) – “Through the Spirit we rise to the Son; through the Son we rise to the Father.”31. St. Irenaeus (Ag Her 3.17.1-2) – “The Lord entrusted to the Holy Spirit the human race which had ‘fallen into the hands of thieves’.
