THE MISSION OF CHRIST CHURCH is to bring all persons to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through Word, Sacraments, and instruction, as taught through the Episcopal
tradition, that all may know the joy and grace of faith, and to share that grace through
outreach.
The Chronicler
Summer 2018
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
Ten members of Christ Church’s Vestry and Officers met on Saturday, May 12, for our Vestry
Retreat to plan our focus of activities for the remainder of the year. We spent time throughout the day
discussing prayers and Bible passages relevant to our situation. In our work sessions we reviewed the
parish’s hopes and dreams that had been expressed during the Lent Series. From that list, we decided
on the three most important items to focus on for the short term.
Engage with nearby churches: to connect our people with those doing similar ministries, and
discover where overlaps or sharing might be possible in social, mission, and worship activities, such as
our long-standing Good Friday Seven Last Words service.
Church growth by engaging our community in church activities: to offer more social
events open to the community to showcase the church and let people know who we are, focus on
people inviting people through a training class for church ambassadors, resume roundtable meetings to
educate new members about commissions, and call people we’ve not seen lately to invite them to
specific church activities.
Youth engagement: to ask youth how can we help them, invite parishioners and other
community youth in the summer to participate in the Food Pantry and Thrift Shop ministries, add new
youth events, schedule a Youth Sunday 10:30 service, and invite youth participation in worship outside
of acolyting.
We discussed what it is that ties all of our activities together, for now, and what is our overall
sense of purpose. We chose this phrase: Engaging people inside and outside of our parish to
provide peace and hope for our community. We also made a list of things to be done before the
arrival of our new Rector, such as particular repairs, sprucing up parts of our parish campus, and
forming a Welcoming Committee. Let me or any Vestry member know if you have an interest in
getting involved in any of these activities.
Yours in Christ,

Margaret R. Matejka, baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church,
recently transferred her membership from Delafield Presbyterian Church
in Delafield, Wisconsin to Christ Church. We are pleased to have
Margaret and, already, she has become active in our Food Pantry
outreach program. We also welcome Lisa Wright, transferring from
Trinity in Fredericksburg and is now an active usher in our service.
Thank you, Margaret and Lisa for choosing our church to be a part of
your Christian life and place to worship. We are blessed to have you
both.
Our heartfelt sympathy to Angela Wienckowski whose husband, Tim, passed away on
May 8, after a long illness.
We also send our love and sympathy to Robert Truslow, on the unexpected death of
his son, William, on May 14.
“May their souls and the souls of all the departed, by the mercy of God, rest in peace.”

What is
Tables of Eight?
A social activity for Christ Church members involving eating, conversing and getting to know
each other in a more personal way than might be available within the walls of the church.
Who can join? Each “Table of Eight” consists of four pairs of members, such as spouses or friends.
All adults are welcome. (If you are single and want to join I can try to pair you with another single person.)
When does Tables of Eight take place? Each session lasts for 5 months so even with busy
schedules 4 dinners can be arranged. Each “table” decides on the dates of their dinners. The next session
will start in September and run through January.
How does it work? Each pair within the “Table” will host one dinner at their home. The host
provides the main course, a side or two and the drinks. The other couples provide the appetizer, salad and
dessert.
Why? The belief that as Christ Church members get to know each other better, the more whole the
church becomes, therefore the more we can appreciate and help each other.
If you are interested or have any questions, e-mail [email protected] or call (540-273-8224)
Tracy Magin. Please sign up by July 15th. It is great fun!

Our Thrift Shop ministry continues to thrive under the leadership of
co-managers Debbie and Lisa. It also takes the commitment of all
the folks who give freely of their personal time to help in this great
outreach program. All Thrift Shop staff and volunteers are cordially
invited to meet with the Thrift Shop Advisory Board on
Wednesday, June 13 from 10:00 to 11:00 am in the Great Hall of
Christ Church. The Board wants to hear your concerns and your
ideas about how the Shop can better serve our neighbors, and about
how the Advisory Board can assist you. Thank you for all that each
of you do to help provide this important ministry to our community.
NOT ALREADY A VOLUNTEER? Please stop by the Thrift Shop anytime and meet our manager and
volunteers. We have a great group of people that keep the shop up and running and if you would like to
be a part of this, we could use the additional help. Come in and talk to the volunteers and let them share
with you the fulfilling experience of working at the Thrift Shop.
REMINDER TO “SAVE THE DATE”. The Sixth Annual 208 Trail Sale, the 24-mile yard sale in
historic Spotsylvania Count along route 208 from Four Mile Fork to Lake Anna, will be held on
September 7-8 from 8 am to 3:30 pm. For parishioners, the Thrift Shop is now reserving spaces at $15
for one day and $25 for two days. You must provide your own tables. For non-parishioners, the space
rental rate is $25 a day, $35 for two days. The Thrift Shop is now taking reservations. Sign up now
before spaces are filled.
Starting Sunday, June 10, we will be singing requested hymns during the summer at the 10:30 service. You
may pick up request slips available at the back of the church and drop them in the collection plate or drop them
at the Usher’s table.
Father’s Day ~ On Sunday, June 17, the Episcopal Church Women will honor all fathers in the parish with
a special cake at fellowship time after the 10:30 service. We will also include a special prayer as we celebrate
our fathers, fatherhood, and all male mentors who act as fathers for younger people.
Coincidentally, Ethan Goldberg celebrates his 16th
birthday on Monday, June 18 and to celebrate, his mom,
McKenzie, will also be providing a few delicacies and a special 16th
birthday cake for Ethan and fellow
parishioners on Father’s Day. Happy Birthday, Ethan!
Episcopal Church Women
On May 15, the ECW visited the historical St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Orange, Virginia. Their informal
but enjoyable tour was conducted by the Rector and we were told that this is the only church built by plans from
Thomas Jefferson as well as involvement by James Madison’s family. We were shown the pew that Robert E.
Lee sat in when he attended the church. Following the tour, the ladies enjoyed lunch at the Old Silk Mill in
downtown Orange. The ECW and all ladies of the church will participate in the 208 Trail Sale providing baked
goods and selling them to shoppers and passers-by. On a separate note, and as a gentle reminder, drop a coin in
your UTO box every time you think of something for which you are thankful. Surely, your box will be full by
this fall when they are collected. Boxes are available at the back of the church and the Communication Center.
Episcopal Church Men
The ECM meets monthly on the second Wednesday at noon at Scafa’s on Courthouse Rd. Summer meetings
are: June 13, July 11, and August 15. Please join us for planning events and fun. Here are upcoming events
the ECM will participate in:
208 Sale Trail, September 7-8;
Christ Church Parish Picnic, September 9;
Car Show, October 6;
Christmas Parade, December 1.

Adult Forum Series Continues Through the Summer
Do you ever wonder about how and why Episcopalians do and believe particular things? Bring
your questions to our Adult Forum, Sundays 9:15 a.m., in the Great Hall, where we will look at
Episcopal Customs A to Z. Our sessions will continue until we’ve covered everything from
“Anglican” to “Zebra Book.”
Summer Simplified Worship Services
The Worship Committee has decided to simplify our summer services from June 3 through
September 2. We are doing things like cutting back on the number of acolytes, dropping the
gospel procession, and using a less elaborate altar setting. These variations are to help us mark
the changing of the liturgical season. Bill’s sermon on June 3 addressed the theology behind the
different emphases we put upon the different times of the church year and the importance,
especially during an interim year such as ours, of experiencing a variety of worship styles.
