The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engi-neering, Art and Math) Lab at St. Joseph Catholic

School opened this fall, and students in kindergarten through 8th grades are explor-ing a wide variety of activities using the 3D printer, ro-bots, circuits, solar ovens and much more! Third grade STEAM students recently participated in a live Google Hangout with a PhD Physics candidate at the University of Tennessee. This was a continuation of our explora-tion of the engineering design process using hoop glider planes. We were able to ask questions, get feedback on our planes, and then make adjustments to our planes based on the information we obtained. The STEAM Lab and its curriculum are designed to inspire critical think-ing, collaboration and student inquiry using an integrat-ed and applied approach, all while encouraging students to take risks and solve real problems.

The holiday becomes a date

for a big feast, complete with turkey and all the trimmings. But there is much more, if we take a breath and think about it. What do we thank God for provid-ing us? Sometimes the things we take for granted are the gifts that should be most precious to us. We

may thank God for food for our bellies and a bed to sleep in at night, but do we thank God for creating us, each with our own insights and talents to share? Do we thank him that we have the freedom to be with him in prayer, anywhere and anytime we want? Are we thankful for the times God helped us get through a rough day at work or school, or made us feel better when we were suffering?Tip for the week: Moms and Dads, as the Thanksgiving holiday winds down, take a break with your kids and think about what you want to thank God for giving you this year. Look beyond just the physical things that God has given you. What has God done for you in your faith lives?

To Whom Are You Most Grateful? This month, we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving, declared a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Most all of us enjoy this secular holiday with its beautiful traditions and we take advantage of this time to say thank you to family, friends and those who have helped us along the way. But who deserves our utmost gratitude? Is it not God, who created us and gave us all that we have? This month join the Vocations Ministers for the weekly hour of Eucharistic Adoration, Thursday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in our church. Join in the prayers; thank God for all that he has done for you. Spend time in the presence of Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to provide insight to everyone so that we can all hear and respond to God’s call – whatever that calling might be.

Prayer for Vocations: Almighty Father, we beg you for an increase in religious vocations and holy marriages in our parish. Help us to be generous in our response to your call. Choose from our homes those who are needed for

your work and strengthen us with the courage to say “yes” and to follow you. Help us as a parish and as families to recognize and foster vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, lay ministry or

whatever path you are calling us to follow. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Schedules

Take Part in Lighting the Advent Wreath The Advent wreath is part of our long-standing Catho-lic tradition. The Catholic Church has designated the four weeks preceding Christmas as Advent—a time to prepare for the Lord Jesus and his coming as our King and Savior. At St. Joseph Catholic Church, we are inviting parishio-ners and their families to participate in lighting the Ad-

vent wreath at the beginning of Mass. The Advent wreath will be lit on the four Sundays of Advent and consists of three purple candles lit on the penitential Sun-days and one pink candle for Gaudete (Rejoice)Sunday, the third Advent week, and its lighter color reflects the anticipated joy of Christmas. Please arrive at least 15-20 minutes before your scheduled Mass. The liturgy coordinator will guide you through the steps in lighting the candles prior to the Mass. Register through iVolunteer using the below link.

http://stjoseph.ivolunteer.com/adventwreathlighting2017This opportunity will be reserved for the first family that registers. If your sched-ule changes, please notify us so we can offer the spot to another family.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children in grades 1-5 are invited to join us for Children’s Lit-urgy of the Word Ministry this Advent Season. We will meet every Sunday at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, starting December 3 and ending on December 17. There will be no CLW on Christmas Eve.

CLW is an opportunity to experience the Gospel using age-appro-priate readings, songs, skits, and activities. Father dismisses the children during the 9:00 mass, and we proceed to the Koenig Center for our session. Parents are invited to come along with their child(ren). Are you a student looking to fulfill volunteer hours? We welcome you to join us and assist as CLW facilitators. We look forward to your participation! Questions? Contact Janet Ritter at 847-362-5372 or Maribeth Bettarelli at 847-362-0121 for more information.

A Time Of WaitingThere is more to Advent than a countdown to Christmas. Advent is a time of waiting and preparation for the birth of Jesus. This Advent season, St. Joseph Catholic Church will keep the manger empty until Christmas Eve. On Christ-mas Eve, we are inviting children and families from the

church to place baby Jesus in the manger at the beginning of Mass. Please arrive 15- 20 minutes early to review the details with the Liturgy coordinator prior to the Mass. Register through iVolunteer using this link. http://stjoseph.ivolunteer.com/theemptymanger. This opportunity will be reserved for the first family that registers. If your schedule changes, please notify us so we can offer the spot to another family.

Green Tip for the Week!PLAN TO ELIMINATE FOOD WASTE

Food waste has a huge impact on the environ-ment. It doesn’t mean consumers will never toss out spoiled milk or soggy greens. Making small and wiser changes can bring about a big difference, like by having a meal plan (Meatless Monday, Taco

Tuesday), making a shopping list, and sticking to the list when we grocery shop. Meal planning saves money, time, and reduces waste.

Employment Ministry to Meet on Wednesday, December 6 Loss of a job and the challenge of finding new employment is one of the most difficult transitions many of us will face. At times of high stress, whatever the cause, we have an extra need to find and draw strength from our relationships with others and God to restore our spiritual strength. To help us with this challenge, Deacon David Tiemeier will present “Joy Can Be Work” at the next meeting of the Em-ployment Ministry. David will explore identifying those things that bring you joy, and using that joy to enhance your attitude and presence in the job search. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from and connect with people who are here to help you! The meeting will take place from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Formation Center (112 N. Milwaukee, Libertyville 60048), Room C. Please enter from the rear of the building. All are welcome! The St. Joseph Employment Ministry assists the unemployed and under-em-ployed in the pursuit of personally and professionally fulfilling work, at any level or type of work. Anyone with a job to fill or an interest in assisting job-seekers is also invited to attend. Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. If you have questions, please contact John Jennings at [email protected]. Employers are invited to post open positions with us by sending an email to: [email protected] of Life

Euchre Night on December 2

The next Euchre Night will be on Saturday, December 2. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; cards begin at 7:00 p.m. Please note our lo-

cation: 200 North Milwaukee, Lower Level (enter through Milwaukee Avenue doors). December Euchre is a little differ-ent than the rest of the season. Instead of playing for nominal, donated prizes, we in-vite Euchre players to make a freewill do-nation toward a scholarship for a student at our Sharing Ministry School in Moshi, Tanzania. St. Joseph’s Euchre Night is for anyone interested in casual Euchre play, meeting fellow parishioners, munching on snacks, and having some laughs. Play-ers are adults that are singles or couples of all ages. These are stand-alone events and you’re not making any commitment about attending future nights. If you’re interested in joining us at our next Euchre Night, or you just have some questions, please send an email to Stuart and Fran Skinner at [email protected].

Thoughts on Giving“…whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40) Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one’s time, money, compassion, forgiveness or mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.

Breaking Open the Word

A Journey to Discipleship—Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture1. Proclaim God’s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence.2. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be.Next Sunday’s Gospel — Mark 13:33-37Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Response: Glory to You, O Lord

Reflection

On Sunday, the new liturgical year begins with the First Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time to prepare for Christmas! We not only anticipate the joyful celebration of the Lord’s Incarnation, but we focus on His humble presence in the Eucharist and contemplate our preparedness for his Second Coming. In our spiritual lives, we are called to focus on how to prepare for our final judgment. The readings call for us to recognize our sinfulness, repent and to use the spiritual gifts we have been given by God to grow in faith. In the Gospel, Jesus provides clear teaching that we are to watch for the return of the Son of Man. Like the servants and the gatekeeper, we are called to be attentive, as we await the Second Coming of our Lord. Our challenge is not to wait but to await the Incarnation and to ensure that our joyous preparations are truly focused on Emmanuel, God with us. As we begin another Church year, we are once again encouraged to be awake and vigilant. Let us consider what New Year’s resolutions we might make to lead us deeper into our faith. Reflection Questions

1. What might I commit to this coming Church year to grow closer to God the Father, better follow the example of Jesus, His son, and be more open to the prompting of the Holy Spirit in my daily life? 2. How can I strengthen the practice of my Catholic Faith? What areas of the Church’s history or teachings could I better understand to help me grow more deeply in love with my faith? How does the realization that God sent His Son as a lowly infant deepen my relationship with Him? What can I intentionally do to help the last, the least and the lowly? 3. What things might I do this year to show greater love for others in my family? My community? My parish? For the poor and vulnerable of the world?

Readings for the Week

Jesus said to his disciples: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his own work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch. Watch, therefore; you do not know when the Lord

of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at mid-night, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’”The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
