Principal’s Desk Welcome to the last Newsletter for Term 3.

Awards

On Tuesday of Week 10 we had the pleasure of attending the Public

Education Foundation Awards at NSW Parliament House. The

Canobolas Rural Technology High School was very prominent in

receiving three awards in this prestigious event as outlined in a

previous newsletter. Mr Matt Scott gained the Minister’s Award for

Excellence in Teaching for his outstanding work in implementing and

delivering the STEM Program. We also received two Secretary’s

Awards for Outstanding School Initiative. The first was for our STEM

Program and the second for our High Performance Athletes Program.

Mr Mark Skein was a very proud recipient of the CHPA award and

richly deserves this accolade for his work in implementing and

managing this truly innovative program.

Reports

Year 12 Reports were posted home on Thursday 22nd September and Year 11 Reports will go out at the end of

October. Please contact the school if these reports are not received in a timely manner. As always please contact the

school, and particularly your students Year Adviser, if there are matters which you feel need discussion with teachers.

Year 12 Final Assembly

The final assembly for Year 12 on Thursday 22nd September was a great celebration of the success of this Year group’s

wonderful achievements throughout their school life and final year. Year 12 exited the school with mixed emotions.

The incoming school captains for 2017 were announced at this event. Our Captains are Georgia Kiel and Mac Reith-

Snare. Our Vice Captains are Matt Gray and Alicia Ilievski. I very much look forward to working with these outstanding

senior students and seeing how they make their mark on the school.

Year 12 Holiday Study Sessions

During the holidays the school will be open to Year 12 on Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 12pm, and again in the

second week on Tuesday and Wednesday only from 9am to 12pm. Study sessions will take place in the STEM centre

and a number of staff will be in attendance to support Year 12 students.

HSC Examinations

It is very important that Year 12 is aware of their HSC examination timetable. The first examination is English (Standard

and Advanced) on Thursday 13th October at 10.20am. Students must be in attendance 30minutes before the English

Examination start time.

Can I also reiterate that during the lead up to this time students can be doing many things to enhance their final

examination performances. Construct and follow your study timetable. Reward yourself with regular breaks. Keep

reasonable hours get plenty of sleep and eat well throughout this time. The BOSTES Students Online site has additional

information to support Year 12 students during this time.

I hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday period and I look forward seeing students return on 10 th October. Next

term we welcome Ms Kate Wootten to the Relieving Principal position for the rest of 2016.

With my warmest regards

Stuart Riles

Principal (Relieving)

DANCING SUCCESS Congratulations to Kiea Wise who has been accepted in the NSW Aboriginal Dance Company. The

Dance company aims to develop the dance skills and cultural awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander students in the style of contemporary Indigenous dance. The group is a partnership with the world

renowned Australian dance company Bangarra Dance Theatre. Kiea will work with leading dancers and

choreographers from Bangarra and will perform as part of the Aboriginal Dance Company in the 2016

Schools Spectacular – Dream Big.

This is a fantastic achievement as Kiea is one of only 30 students from across the state to be selected.

Jack Connors - Story of a Young Champion In 2014, Canobolas Rural Technology High school student Jack Connors was ranked first place winner at

the Australian All Schools Tournament Event. He won Gold in LONG JUMP, Silver in the 100m DASH and

placed third in both the SHOTPUT and 200m DASH. The following year, Jack came 2nd in SHOTPUT; 2nd

in both the 100m &200m DASH events and won Gold for both LONG JUMP and DISCUS.

For the past two years Jack has successfully contested in the Nationals, and will again compete in the

Australian All Schools (AAS) in December 2016. This is a magnificent achievement for Jack for only the

top two placings from each of the state tournaments make it through to the AAS competition. In terms

of mentors, Jack Connors considers Kurt Fearnley as his greatest ever inspiration. Fearnley is a three-time

Paralympic Gold Medallist who has won marathons all around the world, including the prestigious New

York, London and Chicago marathons multiple times. He has crawled the Kokoda track and sailed on a

winning Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race crew. Jack says he follows Kurt’s philosophy, “if you think you

can achieve it, then go for it.’ Jack says he was inspired by the way in which Kurt approached and

dealt with the many obstacles and challenges he confronted along his journey into becoming a true

sportsman. On a personal level, Jack sees competing as a way of acknowledging and representing all

those that have and continue to support him.

Jack believes the secret to success comes from

achieving a sense of balance in one’s own life. For

Jack personally, the most important components

for a balanced life consist of sport, study, nutrition

and leisure; all of which Jack manages to fit in

around his rigorous training schedule. Regardless of

what happens next, most of Jack’s friends, family

and supporters already consider him a winner. If

you ever have the pleasure of meeting and talking

to Jack it doesn’t take long to discover why; like all

true champions this young man has his head, heart

and spirit in the right place.

“Don’t give up on your dreams, they sometimes

only come around once,” is Jacks advice to any

young person willing to have a go. “If you love

something, keep it forever,” he says with a smile.

The Canobolas Rural Technology High School

wishes Jack Connors, the very best for many years

to come. Congratulations on all your wonderful

achievements, and for the inspiration you bring to

so many of your peers. We are very proud of you.

Ellena explores Europe!

Year 11 Music 2 student, Ellena Hicks gained a place in the West of the Divide choir touring

Europe these holidays. A band and choir made up of public students from the Western region, will

participate in music workshops, perform concerts and explore some of the best concert halls and

sights in Europe for two weeks these holidays.

The tour will provide a musical and educationally rich experience beyond the classroom, allowing

the students opportunities to experience many musical genres in their social, cultural and

historical contexts - walking in the footsteps of famous musicians, attending professional concerts

in world renowned theatres, taking part in musical workshops, gaining insight into the world of

music history, discovering the significance of classical music history, reflecting on the

development of musical instruments, exploring the influence of music in different cultures,

enjoying the variety of music genres in different contexts, and more.

The students rehearsed for a week in Dubbo last holidays and have had to use a lot of their own

time learning the repertoire for the tour. Congratulations Ellena, we hope you have a wonderful

experience.

On Friday September 16, over 100 Canobolas students travelled to Bathurst to compete against Kelso in

our first encounter for the CKC Cup. We experienced rain, wind, sunshine and cloud, along with a mixed

bag of results—wins, losses and even a draw. Here are some quick reports from all the coaches on the

day!

SOFTBALL AND TEE-BALL

In the softball game at the rival’s

homeland, the boys were victorious with a

win against Kelso, 5 runs to 3. The training

and preparation for the team was intense

but clearly paid off in an absolute nail-

bitter of a game. Well done boys. The tee

ball squad were not so successful going

down in a convincing 17-0 loss.

Miss Woods

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Over at the touch paddock, in a great display of talent as

our 9/10 boys and girls teams were triumphant with the

boys securing an 8-4 win and the girls with constricted

defence winning 8-0. Our 7/8 teams played well and the

girls gained a 4-1 win over the aggressive Kelso team and

our boys unfortunately suffered from a defeat of 8-0 in a

challenging effort against a young gun team from Kelso

High.

Miss Christie-Johnston

HOCKEY

Over on the turf pitch unfortunately our

girl’s hockey team went down convincingly

7-0, but displayed great sportsmanship and

indications of a future successful side. The

boys however had a fantastic 5-0 win

scoring some fantastic team goals .

Miss Somers

CKC CUP ROUNDUP

SOCCER

9/10 Boys - Result 1-1 draw. Tough match against an equally talented opposition,

Kelso slotted an early goal in the first half and was equalised by a penalty spot

scored by Brayden Quigg. The match resulted in a draw.

9/10 Girls- Result 4-1 loss. Well done to all the girls that played to 'have a go' and

helped out to field a side. Unfortunately the talented and experienced Kelso side

outplayed our girls to take out the match.

7/8 Boys -Result 4-0 loss. Well done to Jerome Beckett who played goal keeper in a

tough match- again we were outplayed by a strong and experienced Kelso side

who took out the match.

7/8 Girls- Well done to all the girls who maintained a positive attitude and good

sportsmanship throughout a hard game. With a bit more practice we should be

ready to face a strong Cowra side.

Well done to all our Canobolas soccer teams :-)

Miss Morrissey

VOLLEYBALL

The 7-8 girls had a great start to their game. With some last minute ring-ins the girls

challenged Kelso for every point, however Kelso proved too strong winning all sets.

Play of the day went to Heidi Bell who had some great serving sets.

The 9-10 girls had a slow start to the game, but quickly found their feet getting

some much needed points on the board. The Kelso girls experience lead them to a

3 set win. The 9-10 girls showed great enthusiasm and sportsmanship and will fit in

some extra training before the next match against Cowra.

The Year 7 & 8 boys’ volleyball team only came together on the day, a big thank

you to the boys who volunteered to play and learn on the spot. The boys played

with great sportsmanship and learnt a lot in the 3 set match. Unfortunately Kelso

were too good for us on the day, but it was a great match.

The boys had a hard task coming up against the well-known Kelso High Volleyball

team but the boys showed some outstanding play and it was a great match. The

boys worked really well together using their 3 hits in the first set, leading the match

at times and only going down by 3 points. The boys regrouped for the next two sets

and performed just as good as the first set. The Kelso side was still too good in the

end winning the second set by 5. All in all a great work by the Nobbies boys!

Miss Woods & Mrs Hurford

The Open Boys and Girls Hockey teams participated in the Shea Inter-School Cup

at the Orange Hockey Complex on Wednesday 7th of September. Both teams

tried hard all day against the other schools from Orange with mixed results for

both teams. The girls started the day against James Sheahan with a 3-1 loss, the

girls then played Orange High where they went down 6-0, they

faced Kinross next going down 3-0. The girls finished the round

games in 4th place, which meant they had to face off against

James Sheehan for 3rd or 4th place. The girls fought hard, but

unfortunately went down in their final game leaving them in 4th

place. Congratulations to our Year 12 students Emily Merchant,

Emily Melnik, Ingrid Formby, Aiden Kelly and Max Pearce, who

played their last hockey game for Canobolas High School, you

have all been fantastic representatives of our school and have

been a pleasure to coach, We wish you all the best in your

sporting endeavours post school.

Tom Kemp Cup

On Friday the 26th August 2016, the girls hockey team travelled

to Bathurst along with Miss Morrissey and Miss Somers to

participate in the Tom Kemp Cup. The girls displayed some

great hockey skills and sportsmanship throughout the day. In

total the girls played three matches, with wins against Kelso

High 2 (3-0) and Gilgandra (6-0) and a draw with Delroy (1-1).

The girls were placed in division two and finished second on a

goal average count back. Kattie-Lee Bennett and Kimberley

Kiel were outstanding in defence, whilst Kirra Everett and Emily

Melnik proved to be a handful up front for the opposition. A big

thankyou to Trent Wilde for umpiring throughout the day and

Miss Morrissey for driving the bus and making sure the team was

hydrated.

The Year 9 & 10 and CHPA dance troupes travelled to Bathurst on Friday 9th September to perform in their

local Eisteddfod. The students were outstanding on and off the stage. All students’ preparation for the

dance was fantastic, with dancers coming ready with costume, hair and make-up done, well done

dancers!

The Year 9 & 10 dancers were first to take the stage, with a few nervous early on but overall each dancer

performed with high intensity and great facial expression! The second half of their performance had great

energy and enthusiasm. The adjudicator commented on the great teamwork displayed and the well-

choreographed performance. Unfortunately the group didn’t place in the highly competitive section but

represented the school well. Congratulations!

The CHPA girls performed next with an outstanding routine to finish off the Eisteddfod season. The girls

looked very graceful on stage in their red costumes. Their fantastic performance earned them second

place against 15 other competitors. The adjudicator commented on their creative start and the use of

mirrors and very good synchronisation and timing in their routine. Well done CHPA dancers and a special

mention to the three Year 12 dancers Emily Melnik, Emily Merchant and Sam Coppock who are leaving us

this year. You have performed outstandingly for the past 6 years and represented your school with pride!

CHPA nutritionist Jacqueline Jasprizza presented a free workshop for PhyzX Excel and CHPA

athletes and parents last Friday evening at 7:00pm. It was great to hear some more detailed

performance nutritional tips and learn a little more about looking after our bodies with nutrition,

especially in regards to travelling as a teenage athlete. Congratulations to the students and

parents who were able to attend.

STEM CENTRE NEWS Year 9 iSTEM

Year 9 iSTEM have completed their prototype CO2 powered dragsters. Students designed a

body type after research into dragsters and F1 cars. They used computer aided design to draw

and 3D print wheels for the cars. This week we test fired the CO2 cars in the canteen. They are

powered by a small cylinder of compressed carbon dioxide. From the random directions our

cars took, there is still some work to do!

Year 8 STEM

This term, Year 8 STEM classes have been looking at elements, mixture and compounds. After

some investigation around fire extinguishers and mixtures that produce carbon dioxide, Year 8

STEM used computer aided design to produce a 3D printed fire extinguisher nozzle. These could

be fitted to a PET plastic bottle to focus the carbon dioxide onto a tea light candle and put out

the flame. Here is a test of a nozzle using soft drink and a mentos, much like in Mythbusters!
