Hungerford’s Dennis Benneyworth has set up Hungerford Auctions Ltd. and will hold the first auction of antiques and collectables on Thursday,

October 18 in Hungerford Town Hall.The auction move brings further credence to Hungerford as

one of Great Britain’s foremost antique centres. Dennis, an increasingly active member of the community,

is a member of Hungerford Town Council and chairman of governors at Hungerford Nursery School and Children’s Centre.

He says: “Hungerford is a well established brand within the antiques world and I believe that an auction in the town will further add to its appeal. I am planning on holding sales in the Town Hall on Thursdays with viewing on market day (Wednesdays) which will hopefully add to the number of people

coming to the town and have a knock-on benefit to market stall holders as well as other retailers.”

Benneyworth has been dealing in antiques for a number of years and specialises in sporting items with his units in the Antiques Arcade and also Great Grooms.

“There are many dealers in the town who, I believe, would welcome a local auction and give them the opportunity to free up stock; and for members of the public to get a fair market price for items they may wish to sell.”

Entries are now open for the first sale and will close on the 8th October in order to prepare the catalogue which will be available a week before sale date.

HUNGERFORD MONTHLY ANTIQUE & COLLECTABLES AUCTIONS

Drivers in Hungerford will soon be able to appreciate some brand new road surfaces, courtesy of West Berkshire Council. The

upgrade of the main roads in the town is being carried out as part of the Council’s ongoing programme to improve roads right across the district. The roads being resurfaced in Hungerford have done good service but are worn out in a number of places, hence the need for a new surface.

Work is due to start on 17th September, and will take approximately five weeks. Letters are being sent to local residents detailing the works.

To enable the improvements to be carried out, the following traffic restrictions will be in place.

A338 Bridge Street from the A4 to Park Street, Monday 17 September for approximately eight evenings. The road will be closed from 7 to 11pm Monday to Friday. Diversion routes will be in place.

A338 High Street, Thursday 27 September for approximately three days. Temporary traffic lights

will be in use between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

Salisbury Road from Park Street to Priory Road, Thursday 1 October for approximately three days. Temporary traffic lights will be in use between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

Regular police meetings are to be held between Hungerford, Wiltshire and Hampshire representatives Hungerford Town Councillors have been told. The action follows reported increased

criminal activity in Hungerford area. Police say they intend having two units on duty at night in Hungerford. Extensive vehicle theft and damage has been reported.

POLICE HELP WITH DOG FOULINGPolice have agreed to accompany the dog warden on patrol in Hungerford where instances of dog fouling are rife. District Councillor David Holtby told councllors before their last meeting that fouling was particularly bad in the canal area and Croft .

CHAMBER TO HELP WITH CARNIVALHungerford chamber of Commerce is expected to take over running Hungerford’s annual carnival.Hungerford Round Tble told a recent chamber meet-ing that Round Table no longer had the manpower or resources to organise and run the carnival.Chamber chairman Nigel Perrin told the meeting that Neale Marney had agreed to chair a carnival committee comprising members of Round Table and the chamber.Concern has been expressed that the carnival dates may clash with the Marlborough Jazz Festival which drws many people from Hungerford.
