My dear friends and fellow Rotarians,

Every year,we are asked tomotivate, inspire, andchallenge our clubs to do the best they can and achieve as much as they can

Thisyearisnodifferent.Weareaskedtodobetter.RI President Sakuji Tanaka wants us to focus our club energies on the 3 priorities of RI Strategic Plan: tosupport and strengthen clubs, to increase humanitarian service, and to enhance Rotary’s public image and awareness

Thisyear,Iwantyoutomakeaconnection!Amongyour members, clusters, and partners in service It could be during a meeting, while attending districtfunctions, whendoingprojects, orwhenlinkingthroughyour social network To connect is to bond, join, unite, link,relate,touchbase,tiein,puttogethertwoormorepieces/people To connect is to talk to one another, work with one another, touch each other, and always understandeachother.Rotariansandclubsconnectingwith a common goal of helping others are more capable toperformbetter, strongerandreadier.

The RCBmeeting held last 04 August,2012 at thePowerhouse was in general very fruitful and reallyworth attending despite the heavy downpour and“bed” weather. It started on time. The meeting wasaptly coordinated by the subdued but sensible PP Ben Ladilad.TheveryenthusiasticPresidentLibbyFernandezopened the meeting promptly as the members werecoming-in in trickles some were even late because of the inclement weather (better late than Never). Therains however did not damper the fiery enthusiasmof the Rotarians We heard PP Doming Valencia no less invoking the Lord Almighty to Bless each and everyone As we were singing the Rotary Hymn, PN Uwe Koeller grabbed my hand announced to me with much authority that since the assigned Retrospect is a No show,IshouldfillinastheRetrospector.Oh!IwaseasyI gave in without much thought

WhatisRotary?WhenIaskRotariansthisquestion, they often give vague answers. And when I askedmyselfthisquestion, Ihadtothinkabout it.August isMembership and Extension Month in Rotary, and I want allRotarianstobeabletosendaunifiedmessageaboutwhat Rotary is and why they joined

The key to increasing membership is for every Rotarian to be convinced that it’s good to be a Rotarian, and to convey that passion to others In Rotary, we have a tendency to be humble and keep our achievements to ourselves But we must share them with those around us and with the world

EveryRotarianhasaspecificmomentthatstandsoutand has a special meaning Some people refer to this as their “Rotary Moment ” I believe it is very important to share this moment with others Facts and numbers can only go so far, but sharing a personal experience can open doors and build friendships

That’s why I decided to create some sample messages that I call “Rotary Moments ” You can use these one-minute and three-minute messages to answerthequestion“WhatisRotary?”inawaythatismost personal to you They will help you talk about the projects you’ve been involved in, how they’ve helped your community, and what’s been most meaningful to you

To strengthen Rotary, we need more members But unlessthosemembersareconvincedofthebenefitsoftheorganizationandcansharethatpassionwithothers, expanding Rotary won’t be meaningful

If every Rotarian is happy about being a Rotarian andspreadsthewordwithaclear, unifiedmessage–ifevery Rotarian around the world can be his or her own PR department – the combined, collective effect willbe enormous These sample messages will help us all clearly communicate our enthusiasm to others This will lead to an increase in new membership and in member retention.

The messages are available for free download at www rotary org, and Rotarians can buy other membership materials at shop rotary org

I believe that the purpose of every life is to help others and contribute to society Once Rotarians begin

AttheRIConvention inBangkok,Thailand, inMay,I spoke about TheRotary Foundation’s five importantgoalsforthisyear.Goalsthatrequiregreatefforts, notonly by the leadership of Rotary, such as club presidents, district governors, RI directors, and Foundationtrustees, but by all 1 2 million Rotarians, everywhere in theworld–includingtheoneswhocouldn’tattendtheconvention.

The Foundation will achieve our monetary goalonly if every Rotarian, and every club, contributes something this Rotary year And we will be successful in rolling out our Future Vision Plan worldwide only if every district, working with the regional Rotary Foundationcoordinatorsanddistrictofficers, providesthe recommended structure and training that will result inastrongerandmorecost-effectivewayofDoingGoodin the World

With amore efficient Foundation, wewill supportthe goal of RI President Sakuji Tanaka to build Peace Through Service We will do this while we plan for the introductionofstewardshipsafeguards, particularlyforDistrict Designated Fund spending

No goal is ever achieved without a plan Your club and district should already have a plan in place for achievingyourgoalsfor2012-13,andnowisthetimetoputitintoaction.Toreachourgoals,everyRotarian,club, and district should participate in The RotaryFoundation, whetherbycarryingoutaFoundationgrantproject, telling others about the good work that Rotary accomplishes every day, or raising funds to support oureducationalandhumanitarianefforts.IurgeeveryRotarian to commit today to achieve Rotary’s 2012-13 goals We can do it We will do it, but only if every Rotarian in the world plays his or her part

OneofthemainbenefitsofRotary’spublicrelationsefforts is enhanced membership development.Educating the public about what Rotary is and whatit accomplishes helps to generate interest among prospectivemembers.Veryoften,a localnewsarticleabout Rotary is followed by a spike in membership queries

There is a correlation between Rotary PublicRelationsandMembershipDevelopment.

Wetalkaboutattractingnewmembersandrecruitingthem. We talk about membership retention. And wetalk about membership loss Building membership is, of course, crucial to building Rotary Rotary is nothing without its members and its clubs

The best way to strengthen our numbers isn’t by focusingonournumbers–it’sbyfocusingonourclubs.Atrulystrongclubistremendouslyattractive.Astrongcluboffersopportunitiesforfriendship,fellowship,andmeaningfulservice. 1. Assess. Listentoeachother, andfindoutwhatmembers want

2. Emphasize. Accent the social aspects of Rotary They are the glue that binds us

3. Market. Don’t sell your club as a product –market it Find out what people want, and do your best to give it to them

4. Induct. Bring new members into your club with dignity and class

5. Involve. Make the whole family part of Rotary Don’t let it be another commitment that takes members from their spouses and children

6. Mentor. Make sure that a seasoned Rotarian helps new members get started and stays involved for at least a year Newcomers can get lost easily

7. Educate. Provide education continuously, butgivealittleatatime. There’salottolearnaboutRotary, and it can be overwhelming
