During Phase One, the only changes to your day-to-day use of the Club will be that we’ll all be parking in our expanded employee parking lot and entering the Club from the gate next to where the Gazebo is located (on the north part of our campus). All club amenities will stay intact, with the exception of your ability to host private banquets. The Lounge and Grille dining rooms will stay fully operational throughout our construction period. Once our parking garage is completed and we begin parking in it, we’ll begin construction of our clubhouse, which will rest on the footprint left by the temporary parking lot. Please reference the Master Plan Update on page 6 of this newsletter for the full details and phases of our exciting project.

CLUB PHONES AND INTERNET WILL BE OUT OF ORDER

On Sunday, October 13, Monday, October 14, and Tuesday, October 15, the Club’s phones and internet will be out of order. The Club will be open and functioning as normal, but the outages will be due to the necessity of relocating our server room which hosts our phones and internet panels. We’re hoping all goes smoothly and everything should be back to normal on Wednesday, October 16. The only number that will be functioning will be the Club’s main number, 713-622-3667, which will be answered on a handheld cell phone by our receptionist. We’ll be using portable walkie-talkies to communicate around the Club during this interim. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Due to this switch over, the Club’s administrative offices will be closed Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th, and the Lounge will be closed Tuesday for both lunch and dinner.

RECORD MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT YEAR 2013

Congratulations to our entire membership for your desire to talk up The Briar Club to your family members, neighbors and business associates and inviting them to join our membership family. This sense of enthusiasm is the essential component driving our club to the success we are experiencing today. We are fortunate to have Linda Benson as the Club’s Membership Director, but her efforts alone are not responsible for the record year we have just achieved. The energy of our club comes from you, our membership, and is directly connected to your desire to reach out

and share the stories of your enjoyment while at the Club with your special friends and associates. There is a big buzz around town and in our community about our impending Master Plan project that has given many a reason to pause and take note of The Briar Club. However, newer and bigger buildings alone are not the catalyst that drives this energy. It is your personal day-to-day experiences and the relationships you have and make with your family, fellow members and club staff that is at the core of our being. It is our Family Focus and sense of Club Community that creates the synergy and is the foundation of our values. It is paramount that this energy be sustained and continue into the future. We are now in our fiscal year of 2014. The dollars we are collecting from our membership drive are flowing directly into our Master Plan project. It is my hope and plan that your energy and enthusiasm will be cause for another record year. We can all make it happen together.

NEW NEWSLETTER FORMAT

With the addition of Chloe Trammel to our communications team, it has brought us the opportunity to layout and publish our newsletter in-house and make it more affordable to once again mail this to you all at your homes. Chloe and Casey Newman, our Director of Administration and Communications, have attempted to re-brand the magazine and streamline its content, making it easier to read and more informative. Please give us your feedback. Chloe has put a lot of thoughtful work into this and we all hope it will achieve our goal. You can e-mail your comments directly to Chloe at [email protected].

Please continue to give me your feedback about your club experiences. As I’ve said earlier in this communiqué, your happiness surrounding your day-to-day activities and relationships are directly connected to our club’s success.

At your service;

RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE

MASTER PLAN CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Wow, what a great party we all had at the Throw Down Before the Tear Down celebration

the last week of August. I’ve had so many members comment to me that they felt it was one of the best parties the Club has ever had. With over 640 members and guests attending, it was by far the largest event in the decade that I’ve been manager of this great club. I believe one of the reasons for all the enjoyment is due to the anticipation of the beginning of construction of our Master Plan Project.

As of the penning of this communiqué, the demolition of the north half of our clubhouse is a few weeks away. If all stays on due course, we’ll be able to watch the wrecking ball swing by the end of October. I’ll send out numerous notices of the actual date and time so all who wish to witness the epic event will be able to do so. Many members are asking about the sequence of construction and what club services and amenities will be disrupted during each of the three building phases.

4 THE BRIAR CLUB • OCT-DEC 2013

The closing of our construction loan and commencement of our Master Plan project is not the only historic news for 2013. In 2013, our club has experienced an unprecedented number of new members. We have admitted 87 new members in 2013! During fiscal year 2013, we have also experienced record membership revenues in excess of $1.5 million! We fully intend to maintain this momentum into our next fiscal year. Our initiation fee for Equity Resident membership will soon be increased yet again as a result of our successful Master Plan campaign.

Last but not least, in September, we completed our Food and Beverage survey. We will soon be sharing the results with you and the course of action our club management intends to take in response to this survey. Please know that we are determined to have a Food and Beverage program that is appealing and satisfying to all members. The Board of Directors and management are committed to find ways to improve. Please continue to fill out comment cards when you dine at the Club. These comment cards are very helpful to our management.

Although this will be my last newsletter, and my year serving you as Club President will soon be over, my desire to improve our Club and our membership experience will never fade. Thank you for all of your support. I look forward to seeing you at our annual meeting in November!

See you around the Club,

HOWARD CORDRAY

Club PresidentA LETTER FROM THE

It has been a historic year for The Briar Club! In October we will close on our $17 million construction loan and commence Phase One of our

Master Plan project. Next year, we plan to have our new parking garage, new six lane lap pool, and men's locker room and lounge expansion completed. Phase Two of our Master Plan for our new clubhouse, Kid's Club, and tennis courts will begin immediately thereafter. We are hopeful to complete Phase Three, which includes the new recreational pool and Barefoot Café, by the fall of 2015. We are all very excited to begin construction! We will be planning several fun events to celebrate the completion of various segments of our Master Plan Project. Be on the look-out for announcements of these events, as you will no doubt want to be a part of them.

Membership REWARDS PROGRAMIt's never been more rewarding to sponsor your friends as new Briar Club members.

LINDA BENSONMembership Director

Congratulations Briar Club members! YOU did it!

What an exiciting year this has been! Not only did you vote for the Master Plan project last November, but you sure showed us that you want your friends here as well! 87 new members joined last year! A simple slogan, Linda Loves Leads, was created by Briar Club members - and I can't thank you enough for all of the leads that you sent to me.

This year, we also started our membership rewards program, which has been very successful. Currently, one Briar Club member is enjoying a year of half-dues and six members are enjoying six months of half-dues because of this program! If you are not familiar with the program, I encourage you to participate! Please read the accompanying section to learn more about the program.

I would like to end by thanking you again for such an amazing year. Do you think that we can do it again next year? We absolutely can! A new thermostat poster will be out in October. Let's color it red!

I'll see you around the Club,

The Briar Club Awarded DISTINCTION

Distinguished Gold Club of the WorldBOARDROOM MAGAZINE

The Briar Club has been awarded the prestigious DISTINGUISHED GOLD CLUB OF THE WORLD award by BoardRoom Magazine, one of the most respected trade publications serving private clubs.

The Distinguished Clubs award program uses a club-specific rating system based on an extensive evaluation process, including an on-site visit and meetings with management staff, that measures a club's member experience. Qualities of that experience include club traditions, history, events, reputation and brand equity.

To be a Distinguished Gold Club of the World is to be one of a select group of private clubs that have been recognized as providing an absolutely excellent member experience.

Employees of the MONTH

It is my pleasure to award the Manager of Merit recognition to our Director of Human Resources, Taisa Reina. Taisa came to The Briar Club over a year ago to head up one of the Club's most important departments. She brought with her a calm and nurturing yet steady demeanor that ensures all our employees have a workplace that is supportive and provides all the tools necessary for them to be successful in their roles at the Club.

Taisa was born in Panama, and has been living in Houston for the past 4 years. She has been a HR professional working in the hospitality industry for 8 years. Her daughter attends the High School for Performing and Visual Arts. Please help me thank Taisa for her enthusiasm she brings to the Club and for the professionalism with which she approaches her job every day.

Youth SERVICE PROJECTSunday, November 17 | 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Briar Club Youth Committee is sponsoring a teenage community service project that involves collecting items and putting together care packages to send to our troops overseas. Teens will be able to earn community service hours for participation in this project.

Collection boxes for donations will be placed around The Briar Club campus. On Sunday, November 17, teen volunteers will gather at the Club to assemble packages and write accompanying letters. Several Briar Club members who are veterans or members of the reserves have offered to participate in this event. At the end of the packing party, the Club will host an Ice Cream Social for participants.
