Greetings,Each year, as I prepare for this special edition of the Briar Cliff University Magazine, I try to find new meaningful words to express our gratitude for all you do and all you give to Briar Cliff.

As in years past, I have concluded that our deep sense of appreciation for our employees, students, benefactors and friends is best articulated sincerely and succinctly with a simple heartfelt thank you.

We truly are better because of you, your work, your wisdom and your many gifts. We hope in some small way this issue in which we share the results of our collective efforts gives you further insight into the lives you helped shape and the world you helped change.

This is a time of incredible change in higher education. Our 2015 Strategic Plan, which our Board of Trustees recently approved, responds to this

change by focusing on the learner of tomorrow. The driving goal of our strategic plan is to be Catholic Franciscan, demonstrably high quality,

agile, sustainable and transformed in product, place and people.

Our campus community has defined key actions which will be used to implement this plan for our future...

First, define, develop and deliver academic programs distinguished by rigor, reputation and success. We are committed to identifying quality indicators and

measuring our success in all areas of study. We have a number of initiatives to distinguish us and provide opportunities for unique experiences for our students.

Second, reshape the organizational structure. We will be implementing an organizational structure that encourages creativity and strategic thinking among our faculty.

Third, foster a culture of excellence where individuals are recognized and rewarded for creativity, efficiency and successful outcomes in serving the learner of tomorrow. We are evaluating a system for rewarding actions that lead to the achievement of our strategic goals.

Fourth, transform our campus facilities and infrastructure to create a dynamic BCU experience. We will begin with the transformation of Heelan Hall, and we are very close to finalizing plans to move forward with this project.

During this very exciting time, we are implementing these goals with an eye on the future as we set out to revolutionize Briar Cliff University.

Donors are recognized as members of the Franciscan Heritage Society by including the University in their estate plans through any of the following financial methods:

• including Briar Cliff University in a will, • making Briar Cliff University the beneficiary of an insurance policy or • making Briar Cliff University the beneficiary of a trust.

As always, donors should consult their personal attorney, accountant and financial planner to fully maximize the benefits of the transfer of assets to designated beneficiaries. Briar Cliff honors all requests for anonymity. However, we do encourage donors to inform the University in writing of their charitable intentions through their estate plans so we can recognize their generosity through membership in the Franciscan Heritage Society.

My hometown is Sioux City. It’s where I was

born, raised and went to school. It’s also where my

family owned a retail shoe business for 73 years.

After college, I spent my entire

43 year business career at 3M Corporation. I started in sales, moved

into marketing and ultimately general management.

I was managing director of 3M Malaysia, general manager of 3M Armorlite, an optical lens

manufacturing company, vice president of the Commercial Office Supply Division and vice president of 3M

Corporate Marketing.

During my 12 years of leading the office supply business, I had the opportunity to help make Post-it Brand notes a major office product globally.

Aside from my family, charities and athletics are very near and dear to my heart. While in the office products industry, I received the industry’s Spirit of Life Award from City of Hope and the Torch of Liberty Award from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). While in Malaysia, I managed the American Association. I also cofounded the Woodbury Athletic Association in Woodbury, Minn.

Serving on the Briar Cliff Board of Trustees has been an exceptional experience and an honor. As a trustee, I am able to give back to my community and serve with people I admire. At BCU, it’s apparent that the Catholic Franciscan values guide the University’s principles, culture and students. Under President Wharton’s leadership, Briar Cliff’s dedicated and capable staff offers sound management and caring service. Equally as important are our donors, who are the lifeblood of the University. Our donors will enable BCU’s strategic plan to become a reality. Their support will be critical to Briar Cliff’s future, especially in the ever-increasingly competitive environment of higher education.


During the Fall 2010 phone-a-thon, Emily Schilmoeller, a senior accounting and business administration major from Le Mars, Iowa, visits with alumni and asks them to participate in the Annual Scholarship Fund drive.

Emily is among the many Briar Cliff students who volunteer their time to raise scholarship funds.

Last year, more than one-third of all alumni gifts came from phone-a-thons. “Contributing to the Annual Scholarship Fund is a Briar Cliff tradition,” said Ann Hoeppner, director of the Annual Scholarship Fund. “Every alumni gift is a symbol of confidence in today’s students and fosters tomorrow’s leaders. ”

The BCU “Mighty Midwest Choir Tour” will perform in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, beginning Feb. 24 through Feb. 28, 2011.

Mark your calendars for a venue near you, including Thursday, Feb. 24, when the BCU choir tour will be at West High School in Sioux City and Blair High School, Blair, Neb.

On Friday, Feb. 25, the “Mighty Midwest Choir Tour” will perform in Iowa at Red Oak High School and Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny.

Overland Park Christian Church in Overland Park, Kan., is the next stop on Saturday, Feb. 26. Additional concerts are being arranged for the St. Louis area on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28. Watch www.briarcliff.edu for the updates to the tour schedule. These free musical performances are open to the public.

2010 Alumni AwardsRose Chicoine ’73 of Sioux City received the Alumni Association Appreciation Award. This award is bestowed upon an individual who has provided outstanding service to the Alumni Association or to Briar Cliff University as an institution. Chicoine, who has served on the Alumni Board of Directors since 2004, is the store manager at Ahler’s Clocks in Sioux City.

Sister M. Arnold Staudt, OSF, ’62 of Dubuque, Iowa, was honored with the Alumni Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes a graduate who by his or her unselfish service has made an exceptional contribution to the betterment of society. Formerly an assistant professor of music at Briar Cliff for 31 years, Sister Arnold currently assists the Sisters of Saint Francis of Dubuque with their many music and liturgical needs.

Judy Kellen ’89, a resident of Sioux City, received the Alumni Professional Achievement Award. This recognition honors a Briar Cliff graduate who, through success in his or her career, demonstrates in an outstanding way the educational quality and ideals of Briar Cliff University. Kellen is a sergeant with the Sioux City Police Department.

The Food Bank of Siouxland was honored with the Siouxland CommunityService Award. This award recognizes a Siouxland group who has improved the quality of life in the community by influencing social structures or establishing and promoting services helpful to others. The Food Bank of Siouxland is a non-profit organization that serves community charities in Sioux City with feeding programs to nourish the needy. Accepting the award was Linda Scheid, executive director of the Food Bank of Siouxland.

Alumni and friends were honored for their commitment to Briar Cliff and to the community at the Alumni Reunion and Awards Banquet in September.

The Class of 1960 was given special recognition for their Golden Reunion. During the banquet, senior music major Gabriel Alves of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, performed piano entertainment.

Following are recipients of the 2010 Alumni Awards.

The Duzik Family was honored with the Alumni Family Award, which is given to a Briar Cliff graduate, or to his or her family, who exemplifies and fosters the concept of family life. Eight members of the family have attended Briar Cliff. Seventeen members of the Duzik Family were at the banquet. Accepting the award for the family was Don Duzik ’69 of Sioux City.

In celebration of a year-long campus focus on “Connecting With Joyful Service,” the Briar Cliff community reached out during a week of service at more than a dozen agencies, nursing homes and organizations in October.

“We asked everyone in the BCU community to do at least one act of service during this time,” said Marilyn Eastman, assistant professor of business and marketing at BCU and faculty advisor for the event. “Throughout the week, we extended a helping hand by cleaning, baking, cooking, giving manicures, entertaining and simply keeping company with many people in need,” Eastman said.

"The week of service offered Briar Cliff students, faculty and staff many different ways to serve the broader Siouxland community," said Gil Ridenour, associate campus minister and instructor of theology. "Hopefully, it was an experience they will repeat throughout the year and their lives."

The event was sponsored by BCU’s Students in Free Enterprise, Society for Human Resource Management, Student Government, Campus Ministry and the Honors Program.

Engaging the Elderly, Caring for the CommunityMore than 100 residents and staff of nursing homes and care facilities in Sioux City were treated to lunch and entertainment at Briar Cliff’s Annual Senior Citizens’ Day Out in October. “Through Senior Citizens’ Day Out, the Briar Cliff community actively engages the elderly by becoming a presence in their lives through our culture of service,” said Gil Ridenour, associate campus minister and director of BCCares. Sponsored by Campus Ministry and BCCares, Senior Citizens’ Day Out launched a weeklong schedule of service activities, when Briar Cliff students, staff and board members reached out to over a dozen Siouxland agencies and organizations in support of a year-long focus on “Connecting With Joyful Service.” BCU junior Dustin Pick, a business administration major from Merrill, Iowa,

Homecoming on The Cliff

Rosalyn Crimmins and Lukas Sachau are named 2010 Homecoming Queen and King. Crimmins is the daughter of Dennis and Maureen Crimmins of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Sachau is the son of William and Michelle Sachau of Allen, Neb.

It was no surprise to discover a sea of blue and gold on campus and around Siouxland during BCU Homecoming festivities in September. Throughout the weeklong schedule of spirit-filled events, including a pep rally, tailgates, alumni gatherings, good food and friendly competitions, students and alumni came together for unparalleled camaraderie, competition and friendship. “I thoroughly enjoyed the Alumni Banquet, which was a lovely Homecoming event,” said Jo Ellen (Knerl) Treinen ’60, Sioux City. “I even reconnected with my college roommate from 50 years ago,” Treinen added. “I enjoyed tailgating with friends and alumni at Homecoming,” said Lyndsie Holmes, a senior nursing major from Marcus, Iowa. “It was fun to see so many people in their blue and gold cheering on the Chargers.” Mark your calendars, reconnect and join the festivities at the 2011 Charger Homecoming, Sept. 30 – Oct. 2.
