After a long winter, April is finally here and along with it warmer weather. I’m sure everyone is ready to enjoy outdoor activities at the Club, including the Family Pool, which is now open. Other activities starting this month include Moonlight Madness and Sunday Night Cookouts, which happen to be favorites for many of our Member families. To our new Members, please come out and experience these wonderful events. The staff at The Briar Club is ready to help you get back into the warm weather swing, and help you schedule all of your Briar Club Spring and Summer outdoor activities, including Kid’s Camp, Youth Tennis, Swim Lessons, and Summer Swim Team.

Speaking of new Members, the Club continues to exceed membership growth projections and could meet the Club’s goals well ahead of schedule. The first quarter of 2015 saw membership growth similar to what was experienced in 2014, which at the time was unprecedented. This is all great news. It may also explain why you have been seeing all the new faces around the Club like I have. Please take a moment when you have the opportunity to reach out and give a warm welcome these newest Briar Club Members.

See you around the Club,

ROB SIGLERBRIAR CLUB PRESIDENT

Club PresidentA LETTER FROM THE

I am sure many of you have seen or have been watching the rising structural frame of the new Clubhouse just behind the Lounge. The structure is

approximately halfway complete and construction crews are working long days and weekends to stay on schedule. The Men’s Locker Room Expansion is also making great progress. This work, along with the Kid’s Club building that recently kicked off, is very exciting to see. It’s also a remarkable realization of the many years of hard work by past and current Directors, Committee Members and Management. Our hats are off to all of our Members who’ve been helping to keep this project on schedule.

ROB SIGLER2015 Briar Club President

By our best estimate, there are over 100 graduating high school seniors who are Members of The Briar Club. We congratulate their achievements and are proud to consider them a part of the Briar Club family. This is a very special time in their lives, and we want to be sure to recognize this milestone!

Please send us the following relevant information about your graduating senior:

NAME, PHOTO, PARENTS NAMES, HIGH SCHOOL, SELECTED COLLEGE,ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - Clubs, Scholarship, Sports, Accolades, Etc.

We would like to feature this information in the July-September 2015 newsletter. To meet this deadline, all photos and information must be submitted by Friday, June 19, 2015.

Please submit your graduating senior's information and photo to Chloe Trammel, Communications Coordinator, via email at: [email protected]. Please call Chloe at (713) 552-2104 or email with any questions.

Class of 2015: High School & College GRADUATES RECOGNITION

In Fond Memory of JAY C. GRUBB

REMEMBERING A BELOVED BRIAR CLUB MEMBER

Earlier this year, the Members and Staff of The Briar Club were saddened to learn of the passing of Jay C. Grubb, a cherished Briar Club Member, on January 25, 2015, at 87 years old.

Mr. Grubb was a notable presence at the Club, joining with his wife Joanna in January of 1963. Throughout his membership, Mr. Grubb was very active in Club leadership, serving as Club President in 1973 and 1993, as well as in various committees over the years.

Mr. and Mrs. Grubb were avid supporters of The Briar Club, and could often be seen dining together at their favorite table in The Lounge. Many Members knew Jay for his quick-witted sense of humor and signature kind presence; we will always remember him fondly.

positions, properly trained to perform the right services. I hope most of you have had the opportunity to meet our Director of Human Resources, Taisa Reina. Taisa is in her third year with The Briar Club. She has brought with her a high degree of professionalism, elevating our Club’s H.R. initiatives to be considered one of the best by our peer clubs in Houston, and state-wide. One of the tests that measures the success of our H.R. initiatives is demonstrated by how many of our seasonal staff members return to the Club each year, bringing with them the friends and associates they feel will help to embellish the service team. This year I’m happy to report that over 80% of our Pool Deck and Life Guard staff members are returning. There will be many familiar faces to greet and serve you when you arrive at the Club. Kudos to Taisa and her fellow Department Heads for all of their achievement in this important area of our Club.

PLEASE "PARDON OUR DUST"DURING CONSTRUCTION

“Pardon Our Dust” will be the mantra of the summer with construction in so many areas of our Club campus. Everyone will need to be a little forgiving as we move you around from space to space while enduring the clatter and dust that construction causes. Please know I will do my best to keep you informed ahead of time of all pedestrian traffic and amenity availability changes as we build out our campus. It is very exciting to watch our Clubhouse, Fitness Center and Kid’s Club construction as it progresses.

INVITE YOUR FRIENDS!MEMBERSHIP DRIVE CONTINUES

As was mentioned in the President’s message in this quarter’s newsletter, new membership has been robust over the last couple of years. At this time, new Member initiation fees are the lifeblood to completing our campus rejuvenation project. Please invite your friends, business associates and family members you like, to come and visit the Club. Contact Linda Benson, our Membership Director, who will be very happy to show them around, and give them membership information if you think they are a good fit to join our Briar Club family. You can also find membership information on the Club’s website (located under the member login

area, under membership information) that you can forward to your friends via e-mail.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!SHARE YOUR FEEDBACK

As always your feedback about your Club experiences, as well as your needs, wants, and concerns is paramount to achieving our Club’s Mission Statement. The only bad feedback is that which I don’t receive. Achieving the highest standards in Aquatic, Fitness, Tennis, Youth programs and Quality Cuisine is a partnership between you the Member, Management and the Board of Directors. We welcome all comments and consider them not as members complaining, but as members caring about their Club. Have a great summer!

At your service;

RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCEGENERAL MANAGER / C.O.O.

It's the beginning of the busy season for our Briar Barracudas summer Swim Team. Our Director of Aquatics and Recreation, Gina DePamphilis,

is challenging all of her coaches and swimmers to repeat last year’s successful undefeated record. Please use the youth program guide titled “Family Fun Starts Here” to learn about and sign up for all of the youth programs through September of this year, including Funtastik Summer Camp. Families with children under 15 years of age should have all received a hard copy in the mail. The brochure is also posted on our website and we have additional hard copies at the Pool Gate, Reception Desk and in the Briar Shop. All registration forms are enclosed in the booklet.

Summertime is FINALLY here! It's time to kick off those boots and pull out the flip flops. For the newer Members who have not yet experienced a summer here at the Club: get ready for FUN! Our calendar is packed with exciting events, from casual Sunday Night Cookouts to Moonlight Madness. Please be sure to view the latest Weekly Beacon for information.

As I walk around the Club, I can't help but get excited watching the Master Plan construction progress. I love stopping at the Gazebo and watching the Clubhouse come together. I encourage all of you to do the same. The countdown is on!

This is also a great time to show off your Club to your friends. If you have a prospective Member that you think I should reach out to, please contact me. I will be glad to schedule a tour and show them everying our very unique Club has to offer!

Our mission remains to grow The Briar Club's membership roster and continue to make the Club the best in the area. With your continued support, I know we can get there.

Last year, I asked the Membership if we could beat 84 new members. You responded by referring 108 of your friends and family. WOW! Do you think we can beat 108 this year? Stay tuned.

As always, if I can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing you around at the Club!

Employees ofTHE MONTH

Emmanuel Campos began working at The Briar Club back in 2006 as a line and banquet cook. He has always been a dedicated, inquisitive and hardworking employee with a great can–do attitude. Chef Lance inherited him when he arrived at our club latter that same year and took him under his wing. Emmanuel has prospered. He has continuously honed his skills and was promoted to A la Carte Sous Chef in 2009 where he was responsible for all the meals served to membership in the evening in all of our dining venues. Last year, in anticipation of opening our new clubhouse with expanded dining facilities and our new modern kitchen, Emmanuel has again been promoted to Executive Sous Chef and is now Chef Lance’s right arm in running all the day to day activities in the kitchen. Every day when he arrives at the club, he brings with him an upbeat, happy demeanor providing leadership for all the other employees in the ‘back of the house’. He is one of the big reasons for the excellent execution of the great food membership has become to enjoy and expect at our club today. Please help me congratulate Emmanuel for truly deserving being recognized as this quarter’s Manager of Merit.

MARCH - JAQUETTA EDWARDS

Jaquetta, our star Briar Club employee for March, is an important part of our Kids Club team, and has worked for The Briar Club for six years. Her favorite thing about her position is watching our Briar Kids grow up and spending time with co-workers. Jaquetta is a senior at HCC, working towards her AAS Degree in Child Development; her goal is to manage her own pre-school/daycare! A native Houstonian (and daughter of Ursula Cornish, our Assistant Controller), Jaquetta enjoys exploring new places and restaurants in her free time. We are proud to recognize Jaquetta's dedication and couldn't imagine the Kids Club without her!

JANUARY - OSCAR VILLEDA

Most all Members know and love Oscar, our talented Dining and Banquet server, for his bright personality and excellent work ethic during Member events at the Club. Oscar has been a valued employee of the Club for seven years - and is also our resident floral artist! Oscar attended University of Houston Downtown and is pursuing a career in Interior Design. While not at work, Oscar enjoys going to the gym, doing DIY projects, and spending time with friends & family. (Did you know that Alfa, our Server, is Oscar's sister?) Through his hard work, Oscar has lost 70 pounds, and looks & feels amazing! We love Oscar, and are proud to recognize all of his personal and professional achievements.

FEBRUARY - LISA PHILSON

If you frequent our Fitness Center, Lisa needs no introduction! An East Harlem native, Lisa has worked for the Briar Club for 5½ years as an ACE-certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Desk attendant. She divides her spare time between relaxing and preparing for races with Seanna Harrington, our Member Fitness Spotlight (at right)! Lisa is very dedicated to personal fitness, and used to bike 100 miles from NY to NJ on weekends! On top of her many merits and talents, Lisa was chosen as Employee of the Month for her wonderful relationships with the Members with whom she interacts. MIKE ALCOTT

ACE - Personal Trainer CertificationAmerican Council on Exercise

We are proud to announce that our very own Head Tennis Professional, Mike Alcott, received his ACE Personal Trainer Certification in February 2015, after a six-month study program! With this achievement, Mike joins our ranks of ACE-certified Personal Trainers and demonstrates his ability to provide individualized fitness and wellness training programs. We are so proud to

have you on our team, Mike!

Court of Master Sommeliers

Patrick McMillan, The Briar Club's A la Carte Dining and Beverage Manager, has earned the distinct title of Level I Sommelier after passing his examinations in San Francisco, California in early March 2015. This exam assesses not only the knowledge of wine, but also of spirits, service, and food pairings. Patrick is already looking forward to the Level II Sommelier examinations. We are proud of Patrick's accomplishments and are even more proud to have him on The Briar Club

management team.

Club NewsBY CHEF LANCE WARREN

Executive Chef, Director of Food & Beverage

The sun is out and the heat is “almost” here. When I look at the weather I equate it to food, and this time of year, for me it is all about the fresh produce. I remember as a kid, my father would “attempt” to grow vine-ripened tomatoes and once in a blue moon we would have the perfect batch that rivaled anything else we could find in the supermarkets.

With such a demand for local ingredients, we are fortunate to be surrounded by several local farmers that are passionate about the product they grow and there is no more need for hoping and wishing for that perfect batch of tomatoes. Throughout the city there are farmers markets where you can hand pick the fresh produce and talk with the farmer that picked them directly. I encourage you to take advantage of what our great city has to offer.

I have developed a close relationship with our vendors that supply us with incredible products globally and locally. This relationship has allowed us to receive amazing consistent product from produce to proteins. We have a passionate culinary team that strives in utilizing these products in many creative ways.

We look forward in spending our spring and summer months with you, and as always, please do not hesitate to flag me down.

RICHARD ANDRAE Director of Fitness & Wellness

I can remember many years ago (at my age, remembering is becoming a marvelous occurrence) walking into the New York Athletic Club in NYC just off Central Park and thinking what a remarkable club. What heritage and member pride it exuded. The Club proudly recognizes its “winged foot” heritage by the vast amount of plagues honoring its members through its over 125 year history. Every room in the club has a member board responsible for its upkeep and operations from the Boxing Room to the Locker Room (the Locker Room Committee is affectionately called the Knights of the Bath) to the Billiard Room watched over by the Knights of the Green Table Committee. It is truly an experience that has stayed with my ever-forgetful brain even to this day.

I say all this because I have the same sense of pride being here at the Briar Club. We should all have the same sense of pride in what The Briar Club is and even more what it is becoming. The Wellness Facilities have earned local as well as national attention for its design and layout. The variety of equipment, space and programming is equal to any private club and many chain multi-purpose facilities like LA Fitness, Lifetime Fitness and others. We have been the envy and “model” for many club renovations and additions both locally and statewide. Our youth fitness programming was the first of its kind in any club in the United States or Canada.

However, it is more than just the physical plant that makes the Briar Club special to its members. I am fortunate to work with an incredibly dedicated and professional staff that has a tremendous desire to provide you and your families the best available programs and services while maintaining your club in immaculate shape so you can bring family and friends to your “home away from home” and show it off. The recent addition of Sandy Fuller, an on-site physical therapist, to further expand our wellness offerings is another indication of the efforts the staff is continuing to seek to provide you the highest standards in the industry. All of the talented and special people here on the Wellness Staff are here to add value to your membership and increase the pride you have in being a member of one of the most progressive and forward-thinking private clubs in the country that make the Briar Club a place for all members to feel the PRIDE!
