Greetings LaMissTenn District Key Clubbers,

Although we can all agree that Key Clubbers are too cool for school, another school year is

around the corner. This means sleepless nights, cramming for tests, football games, and hectic

schedules! I am excited to be starting my senior year, but I am more excited to be able to serve you

this year and make Key Club a memorable experience for all members.

July was a busy month for Key Club International! At the beginning of the month,

International Convention, ICON, took place in Anaheim, California, and LeadCon took place at the

end of the month in Indianapolis, Indiana. You can read all about ICON and LeadCon in this

newsletter!

The District Board has been working hard to make necessary changes to the district. You can

read all about our progress on page nine of this newsletter. The Lieutenant Governors are

enthusiastic about their rallies, and I cannot wait to meet you all during this upcoming rally season!

Since it’s the beginning of a new school year, it’s also recruitment time! Brainstorm with your

board to come up with ways to draw students’ attention to come to a meeting! Hint: all will come if

there is food! Another idea you might want to take into consideration is creating a slideshow/video

presentation with fun pictures and reasons why your members love Key Club. You can then play this

video on the announcements if your principal gives permission. Focus on recruiting the freshmen

and sophomores at your school. Despite what one make think,

hardworking and dedicated freshmen and sophomores are vital to

LaMissTenn District Key Club Newsletter

The LaMissTenn District traveled to sunny California to attend the 71st Annual Key Club International

Convention, ICON, in Anaheim! At convention, LaMissTenn District Key Clubbers had the

opportunity to learn more about the organization, The Eliminate Project, and different service

projects. The delegates of the convention voted on amendments to Key Club International’s

Bylaws and also elected the 2014-2015 International Board. Overall, ICON was an amazing

weekend spent with Key Clubbers from across the world!

The Newly Elected International Board

Maria Palazzolo from the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District was elected International President, and Kevin Zhang

from the Pacific Northwest District was elected International Vice President.

The following are the voting results of the House of Delegates. Delegates

voted on amendments to the Key Club International Bylaws.

Amendment #1

Presented by the Key Club International Board of Trustees

Article IX Districts

Section 4. In order to form a new district, the proposed area must include no less than 25 active Key Clubs and no less than 375 at least 15 active Key Clubs and at least 450 active Key Club members. In the event a district fails to maintain this club and membership level for three years, the

Key Club International board may decertify the district by two-thirds majority vote. In such case, the International director shall provide written notice to the governor and secretary of the sponsoring

Kiwanis district and the governor and administrator of the Key Club district at least 120 days prior to any meeting at which the district’s decertification shall be considered.

Amendment #2

Presented by the Key Club International Board of Trustees

Article VIII. Club Members

Section 6. Any person, not in high school or an educational equivalent, who has performed

some distinguished public service may be elected an honorary member of a club for a period of one year. Honorary members shall pay no dues and shall not be entitled to any privilege of a

Key Club member. Honorary members shall pay no dues but shall be entitled to all the privileges of full club membership except those of voting and holding office.

Article XXII. Revenue

Section 1. Each Key Club shall pay Key Club International, or its designated fiscal agent, annual dues

of six dollars and fifty cents (US$6.50), being membership dues and subscription to the Key Club International publication, for every member, but not including honorary members. Fifty cents of the

dues of each member shall be deposited into the Youth Opportunities Fund to create an endowment to fund grants to clubs and scholarships. Dues shall be payable during a period of at least 60 days according to a schedule set forth in Key Club International Board Policies and defined for each nation

taking into account academic calendar and financial practices of the nation. There shall be no other fees or assessments of clubs.

Meet Our IT

I recently went to Indianapolis, Indiana, to attend LeadCon, a leadership conference for the Key

Club International Council. The council consists of the Key Club International Board and the District

Governors. At the conference, I was able to meet Robbie Mathis, our International Trustee from the

Kentucky-Tennessee District, and we made our Trustee-Governor Agreements for the year. Charli

Lehman, the leadership development specialist, presented information about inspiring others,

achieving goals, and connecting with others. LeadCon was impactful in many ways, and I am

proud to say that I will be using some of the things I learned at future board meetings!

Gratitude

The Wizard of Leadership

As Key Clubbers, we are constantly serving in our homes, schools, and

communities-one of our pledge statements. Often times, we don’t

stop to show gratitude to the people that have helped shape us into

the servant leaders Key Club is allowing us to become. My challenge

to you this month is for you to truly express gratitude to the most

significant people in your life, whether through a kind action, a letter,

or a phone call. Although we usually don’t see gratitude as an aspect

of service, it most definitely is. When we show gratitude, we are not

only showing how thankful we are for someone, but we are making

that person feel impactful, loved, and needed. This is service to the

soul. When someone receives gratitude, they smile, and “making one

person smile can change the world – maybe not the whole world, but

their world.”

I bet you’ve never thought that the popular

film The Wizard of Oz could assist you in leading

others! Dorothy’s friends can show you three main points of

leadership. Have courage to be vulnerable and imperfect, to do something with no

guarantee, and to let go of who you thought you should be. Be who you

are!

Have the heart to create “real”ationships and show gratitude.

Use your brain to know how and when to add value and to go against

the grain!

New School Year, New Goals

What’s your mission statement? Developing a personal mission statement can bring goals to mind and can

remind you of what you are trying to accomplish in life. Personal mission

statements can also help you realize who you want to be, and it can guide you in

your day-to-day actions and decisions. Create your personal mission statement

that you can use for this year! A few steps you can follow are defining who you

are, defining what you want to be and do, identifying an influential person, and

defining your life roles and contributions. Let your creativity take over, and you will

be surprised with what you write! “To become the best version of myself so that I can be impactful and as self-giving as I can be.

I will become the best version of myself by staying committed to achieving my goals and by

always being passionate about my beliefs.”

Every year your Key Club needs new, attainable goals. If

you have not already done so, you should sit down with

your board and write reasonable goals that you would like

your club to achieve. Make your goals SMART! If every

officer is on the same page at the beginning of the year,

you are more likely to have success. Members will be

guided in the right direction, and your club will accomplish

WANTED: New SLP Subcommittee Member for Key Club International

Do you LOVE The Eliminate Project? Then The Eliminate Project SLP subcommittee is just for YOU!

The Eliminate Project’s Service Leaders in Philanthropy (SLP) subcommittee advises on SLP-related fundraising

initiatives for the campaign. It is comprised of two student leaders each from Circle K International and Key

Club International and one adult representative each from K-Kids, Builders Club and Aktion Club. Individually,

each SLP subcommittee leader works with the members of his/her SLP group. Collectively, the group represents

the SLP family in the campaign. This subcommittee reports to and works with the fundraising campaign’s SLP

Vice Chairman Jeffrey Wolff and SLP Campaign Director Ruth Gabler.

Expectations for representatives on the subcommittee include:

-Attending bi-weekly webinars

-Serving as a liaison to the International Board as assigned

-Planning and promoting SLP activities such as Eliminate Week and The Eliminate

Project at the international convention

Calling Techies: 2015-2016 LaMissTenn District

WEBMASTER

We are now taking applications for the 2015-2016 District Webmaster, instead of in the spring as in the past. It is

crucial to the success of the clubs that this office be maintained continually—the LAMISSTENN webpage is one

of our primary means of communicating with members and advisors. In an effort to insure that there are no

gaps in communication throughout the district, we are going to be appointing incoming Webmasters in

November. This will give the new Webmaster an opportunity to train with the outgoing Webmaster.

Qualifications:

*responsible, self-starter, able to work independently with moderate to advanced computer skills

*underclassman, preferred

District Board Happenings The District Board’s committees are working hard to provide resources for clubs

available through the website. Lieutenant Governors are planning their rallies; I

cannot wait to meet all of you during this upcoming rally season. We will be

videoing for our Eliminate, NOT, and DCON videos at our September board

meeting! These videos will be available for viewing prior to Key Club Week.

We are in the process of completing our new District Website! Check out our

progress at www.lmtkeyclub.org! Please email me with your suggestions so that

we can fulfill our goal of making the website more user-friendly and beneficial.

It’s Story Time! Sharing Eliminate Project success stories with one

another can keep people inspired and enthusiastic

about our efforts to eliminate MNT! I would enjoy

hearing your success stories or fundraisers. Please email

me, and your story could be featured in my newsletter

and on the website!

With a new school year here, clubs are looking for ideas

for new projects. Share your projects with me so that

they can be shared within the district!

Each month, a club will be chosen as the Outstanding

Club of the Month. The outstanding club will have their

success featured on the website with pictures of

favorite projects. Please email me if you would like your

club to be considered outstanding for the month.

Eliminate Progress As of July 28, 2014, Kiwanis-family Service

Leadership Programs have raised US$3,078,104.83

in total funds. These funds will save or protect

more than 1.71 million women and babies from

maternal and neonatal tetanus. Key Club
