My good friends in Christ Jesus, This week is a celebration of National Catholic Schools Week. I would like to say a brief word about Catholic education. Catholic Schools have long been a blessing for our youth and for our families. I am the product of sixteen years of Catholic Education. I also have family members who have been teachers and administrators in Catholic schools. I am so grateful for the formation and education that was afforded to me by Catholic schools. I am also very aware of the sacrifice of my parents to ensure that all ten of their children enjoyed Catholic education. That sacrifice was worth it! Here in Grand Island we are blessed with our Central Catholic Middle and High School. Our goal is to continue to strengthen our school and our endowment so that they will be here for a long time. Catholic schools are to compliment the primary role of parents in educating their children. Our schools should be accessible and affordable to all. They should have a strong Catholic identity. We hope that our Catholic school works to evangelize the culture and serve the common good of our community. Our parish works diligently to support our Catholic schools. St. Mary’s currently has 60 students from 38 families who are attending GICC. We have not had this many students from our parish at GICC in many years. I encourage all parents to consider a Catholic school education for your children. I understand that the financial cost might be a detriment for some families. I hope you know that our school does offer financial assistance and scholarships that possibly can help your family. If you are interested in knowing more about this assistance you are welcome to talk with me or with the business office at GICC. Have a blessed week. Fr. Jim

During these winter months please take care when walking around our facility – especially when there is snow and ice. We have many steps and many places where ice tends to form. Please notice that we have put

snow shovels and ice/snow-melt near many of our entrances. Near these items there is also a clip board with a form. If you are kind enough to help remove snow – or to spread the ice-melt we ask that you please record what you did and the time you did it. This helps us with our Catholic Mutual insurance company requirements.

Our state legislature is considering an important legislative bill (LB295) that advances educational opportunity for Nebraska’s low-income and working-class families. LB295 enacts a tax credit for private donations to nonprofits that would provide K-12 private-school scholarships for poor and working-class children. Take action now, visit www.necatholic.org for more information. Page 6 has information too. God bless your faithful advocacy!

Your Action Needed Now

Please bring your old palms to be used for Ash Wednesday. We will have a basket for them in the front of the church

Daycare/Parish Page 6 GICC

Who will LB295 help? A first-time recipient must be transferring from public to private school - unless they are entering private-school Kindergarten, private school 9th grade, or are a sibling of any of these other recipients. The bill is focused on families who likely have no other choice but public schools. An eligible family’s income must be lower than twice the Free-and-Reduced-Lunch level.

Will LB295 hurt public schools? LB295 steers only private - not public - funds to private-school students. It helps reduce costly overcrowding in Lincoln and Omaha public schools. It actually saves state tax dollars in short order by slowing the amount of state aid needed for public schools. If a recip-ient transfers from public to private school, it will likely leave more resources for the state to spend on fewer students.

How will this affect private schools? Participation will be voluntary for all private schools. The state will be prohibited from interpreting the Opportunity Scholarships Act in any way that expands its authority to control or intrude upon private schools.

SHARE YOUR STORY! If you have a personal story about how private education or a privately-funded scholarship has had a powerful impact on your child and family, Nebraska needs to hear it! All children should have the opportunity to choose the education that best fits their needs. Here are ways to make your voices heard to advance education choice in our state:

Contact your Senator

They are elected to serve you after all! You can simply encourage your Sena-tor and Governor Ricketts to support LB295 or, even better, tell them why private school was best for your child. Find contact information at nebraskalegislature.gov.

Letters to the Editor This can be a powerful, yet easy, way to show public support for education choice. For a list of talking points and directions for con-tacting your local paper, visit necatholic.org/education.

Contact the NCC The Nebraska Catholic Conference is collecting your stories to share with the Legislature, media and general public. We would love to hear from you! Contact Lauren Garcia at 402.477.7517 or [email protected].

Education Choice Parents have the right to choose a school for their children which corresponds to their own convictions and should have true liberty in their choice of schools. Education choice policy helps lift the financial burdens that pre-vent many families from choosing the education that best suits their child’s needs.

LB295 Overview The Opportunity Scholarships Act provides for private school scholarships for low-income students. It does so by enacting a tax credit for donations to nonprofit scholarship granting organizations.

Why We Need LB295 ? Too many parents in our state lack true freedom of education choice. Many cannot afford to pay both taxes in support of government schools and tuition for parochial or other private schools. This bill will give low- and middle-income families privately-funded scholarships to choose a private education for their children.

LB295 Overview This Will Help Nebraska More opportunities for low-income students. • Nebraska will join 18 other states with similar laws which have saved more than $1.8 billion all together. • Higher achievement and college enrollment rates. • Increased civic participation.

What You Can Do to Pass LB295? Join our network for important updates/action items. Write Letters to the Editor ~Write to your Senator ~Write to Gov-ernor Ricketts~ Host an LB295 info session. ~ Share information on social media.

Enacting Education Freedom in Nebraska LB295: Opportunity Scholarships Act

Why do we need LB295? Every single child in Nebraska deserves to go to a school that best suits his or her needs, regardless of income. LB295 allows for more private, not public funds, for scholarships to attend pri-vate school which too many cannot otherwise afford. In 2017, Children’s Scholarship Fund of Omaha turned away 635 applica-tions due to lack of scholarship funds.

How will LB295 work? LB295 will create a state income tax credit for donations to scholarship granting organizations, i.e., nonprofits that turn nearly all their revenue into private-school scholarships. Participating schools must be approved or accredited by the state and follow the nondiscrimination requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

What is a tax credit? A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction of one’s tax liability, in contrast to a tax deduction, which merely reduces one’s taxable income.

Today’s Readings First Reading — Moses spoke to all the people, saying: “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you” (Deuteronomy 18:15-20). Psalm — If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading — Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties (1 Corinthians 7:32-35). Gospel — The people were astonished at Jesus’ teaching (Mark 1:21-28).

In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Padre Jim
