A Note from Fr. Jim: My good friends in Christ Jesus, On Palm Sunday we enter into Jerusalem with Jesus, and the Church enters into Holy Week. This week is not simply about remembering and re-telling the story. This week is about our entering into the very mystery by which we are saved. The Paschal Mystery is that of Christ’s death and resurrection. By our Baptism – we are immersed and inserted into this mystery. In order to prepare for this sacred time leading up to our Lord’s Passion and Resurrection, I invite you to meditate on some quotes from the saints. “True reverence for the Lord’s passion means fixing the eyes of our heart on Jesus crucified and recognizing in him our own humanity.” –Pope St. Leo the Great

“The tragedy of the passion brings to fulfilment our own life and the whole of human history. We can't let Holy Week be just a kind of commemoration. It means contemplating the mystery of Jesus Christ as something which continues to work in our souls.” –St. Josemaria Escriva

“We give glory to you, Lord, who raised up your cross to span the jaws of death like a bridge by which souls might pass from the region of the dead to the land of the living. ..You are incontestably alive. Your murderers sowed your living body in the earth as farmers sow grain, but it sprang up and yielded an abundant harvest of men raised from the dead.” –St. Ephrem the Syrian "The death of the Lord our God should not be a cause of shame for us; rather, it should be our greatest hope, our greatest glory. In taking upon himself the death that he found in us, he has most faithfully promised to give us life in him, such as we cannot have of ourselves." - St. Augustine

“Why did you suffer for me, dear Jesus? For love! The nails…the crown…the cross…all for the love of me!”–St. Gemma Galgani “Mount Calvary is the academy of love.” -St. Francis de Sales Please enter into this week with great reverence and expectation. Our God is ready to die for us. Have a blessed Holy Week, Fr. Jim

Religious Education celebrated the closing of our year 2018/2019 on April 10th. Please say thank you to all our Catechists who spent this last year helping to prepare your children as they travel on their Faith Journey. We are so blessed to have such caring and compassionate Catechists. As we just completed 1st Communion with 138 students, I would like to encourage you to attend mass with your children each week so they can receive Holy Communion each week and draw closer to Jesus. They are anxious and eager to learn and we appreciate all that you do! Confirmation Retreat will be held on August 11th from 10am-5pm The students will meet at the Cathedral for Mass at 10am. Following Mass, the students will go to the Parish Hall and have pizza for lunch and continue their afternoon Retreat to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation on September 8th. All Confirmation students are required to attend this Retreat. Information regarding this Retreat is posted on the bulletin board in the back of the Cathedral. Our calendar year for classes is now closed and we encourage you to watch for registration this August so that your children can enroll and continue their Journey. If you have any questions, please contact Barb Ernst at 308-384-2523 ext 213. Thank you for your support!

Fasting and Abstinence

Operation Rice Bowls may be brought to the church during Holy Week. You can bring them to the sacristy before or after any of the liturgies. You can also put them in the collection. This is our annual almsgiving which supports the work of the Catholic Relief Services.

Rice Bowls

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year until the beginning of their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have completed their 14th year of age c. 1252). If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and celebrate more readily his Resurrection (see Sacrosanctum Concilium, 109).

The Parish office will closed on Noon on Thursday, April 18th for Holy Thursday

Parish Office, Daycare,& SMIP will be closed on Good Friday, April 19th

Our Capital Campaign update will be in next week bulletin

Continuing God’s Good Works Capital Campaign This week: : “Three Days that Changed the World.”

Go to www.stmarysgi.formed.org to open your free door to countless Catholic videos and talks including Bible studies, movies, documentaries and more. This week Fr. Jim recommends the audio recording: “Three Days that Changed the World.” Fr. Hector Perez brings us alongside Jesus in the final hours of His public ministry as He brings to fulfillment the very purpose of His Incarnation, the salvation of all mankind. Fr. Perez's detailed insights of those last three days offer a moving look into the lov-ing heart of the Messiah and detailed descriptions of his intense emotional and physical sufferings. With this knowledge, our hearts can only love him more.

St. Mary’s Cathedral Eucharistic Adoration Prayer Intentions

You will receive the Saint ( Blessed) of the day, Mediation plus Gospel of the day to your Facebook page in each day.

We begin the final week of Lent with these familiar readings. This year, we hear the Passion from the Gospel of Luke. These readings for Palm Sunday and the Passion used to be read on successive Sundays. Now they are combined into a single feast, so that we may see the whole sweep of the glory and the suffering played out. Jesus accepts the adulation of the crowd, the foreshadowing of his glory in the Resurrection. He bids farewell to his disciples in his last Passover, and forgives his tormentors as he dies on the cross. Later this week, we enter the Holy Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, when the whole story of our redemption will play out once again. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Diocese of Grand Island is sponsoring a religious vocation promotion initiative. “CALLED BY NAME” is a program that invites men and women, 18 years of age or older, to consider a vocation as a priest, religious sister, brother, or deacon. This program has been recommended by the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Vocations in its document, “A Future Full of Hope: A National Strategy for Vocations to Priesthood and Religious Life for the Archdioceses and Dioceses of the United States.” Parishioners throughout the diocese are encouraged to consider who in our midst might serve well as a priest, deacon or religious and submit their names. There are many good prospective priests, brothers, sisters and deacons who are simply waiting to be asked. Last weekend we handed out cards upon which you could list fellow parishioners (or yourself!) who you think might have the calling of priesthood, religious life or the permanent diaconate. If you did not get a card – you can still pass along the names to the parish of-fice. Please include the person’s name, which vocation you think is theirs and their contact information (phone number and address if you know it). Thank you.
