Here are some varied thoughts for today: We are in the time between our Lord’s Ascension into heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost which we will celebrate next week. I encourage you to pray this week so that we might be open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit which God desires to give to us on the feast of Pentecost. A popular and ancient prayer of the church for these days might be a Pentecost Novena. You can find helpful versions of this novena at www.ewtn.com/devotionals/pentecost/seven.htm

Many thanks to those who have made pledges to our “Continuing God’s Good Works” Debt Elimination and Capital Campaign. I write this note about 7 days before you read it. We currently have gift commitments of $1,746,082 and only need pledges for the last $253,918 to make our goal of $2,000,000. I am in awe of your generosity. Let’s keep praying and encouraging our friends to participate. If you have questions or concerns – please let me know!

Thank you to the following who have helped us with the Campaign. Thanks specially to Ray & Jennifer O’Connor; Ilario & Lucia Marcos, Mike Kube, Victor Mercado, Jolene Wojcik, Donna Narbor who have helped as co-chairs; lay witness talks at masses and receptions coordinators. I appreciate your great generosity, hospitality and joy.

A clarification on the Adoration Chapel which we are hoping to build on the corner of Koenig and Cedar streets. That property was donated directly to the Diocese of Grand Island. Bishop Hanefeldt has taken “ownership” of that lot and is working with an architect to design a chapel that can provide prayer with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Currently this chapel would be “run” by the diocese. This means the diocese assumes the costs of maintaining the chapel. The chapel would be open to all in the diocese who wish to pray in it. The chapel is also being planned right here as part of our parish campus so it makes sense that we would eventually have some stewardship and participation in overseeing the chapel.

When you make payments on the Capital Campaign in the coming months – please make sure to mark your check or envelope as “Capital Campaign” or “Continuing God’s Good Works.” We plan to insert special envelopes in the offertory envelopes that you receive in the mail.

Have a blessed week! Fr. Jim.

Music Rehearsal for Ordinations Prayer to Discern a Vocation

Lord, there are so many things in my life that I do not understand,

so many questions about the future that I need to ask. What is Your plan for me?

What is the work You want me to do? All I really know is that You love me.

Show me the road You want me to walk – to fulfillment, to happiness, to holiness.

And if You are calling me to priesthood or to the religious life, give me the strength to say “yes” and the grace to begin even now

to prepare myself for the challenge of a life spent in Your service and

in the care of Your people. I ask You this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

May is Melanoma Skin Cancer awareness month. Prevention Guidelines: The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended using a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher as one important part of a com-plete sun protection regimen. Sunscreen alone is not enough, however. Most skin cancers are preventable. To protect yourself, follow these skin cancer prevention tips: Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For ex-tended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spec-trum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your en-tire body 30 minutes before going outside.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should only be used on babies over the age of six months.

Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. See your physician every year for a professional skin

exam. Ref: mcskincancer.org

Sunday: Seventh Sunday of Easter; World Communications Day Monday: Memorial Day Tuesday: Shavuot (“Weeks”), the Jewish festival of the giving of the Law, begins at sunset Wednesday: The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday: St. Justin Friday: Ss. Marcellinus and Peter; First Friday Saturday: St. Charles Lwanga and Companions; First Saturday

Today Readings First Reading — The Eleven and the women devoted themselves to prayer (Acts 1:12-14). Psalm — I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27). Second Reading — Glorify God if you suffer for the name of Christian (1 Peter 4:13-16). Gospel — The Son will give eternal life to all those who are given to him by the Father (John 17:1-11a).

This seventh Sunday of Easter is somewhat like the proverbial “calm before the storm.” The Lord Jesus has ascended into heaven and Pentecost has not yet occurred. Rather than immediately taking up Jesus’ command to go out to all the nations, the disciples gather in the upper room “with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers” (Acts 1:14). There they all devote themselves to prayer. The Gospel recounts the great prayer for the disciples that Jesus offered to his Father in heaven. If the words of Jesus while he was on earth finally began to sink in for the disciples, then gathering to pray was certainly the right choice, for the second reading lets us all know that to follow Christ means to have a share in his sufferings. Vocations. That many people may hear the call of Christ and follow Him in the priesthood and religious life. Pro Life. That all people will come to value human life as God’s precious gift to be accepted and loved rather than a burden to be destroyed.

Merciful Jesus, may give prophetic witness to reconciliation, justice, and peace

Work has begun to refinish the Cathedral floors and will continue through May. Please respect the orange cones and tape used to restrict foot traffic from the current work areas. This work will bring sights, sounds, and smells to the Cathedral that might seem distracting to prayer and devotion, but your patience is appreciated so we can all enjoy the results to come . Thanks for the consideration. Jim, Maintenance
