crimes are committed by foreigners whoillegally enter the country and are thereforeharder to locate.Roadblocks at night were also put on the

table for discussion. It was suggested thatdrug trafficking instances are on theincrease at night because minimal stopand search campaigns are conducted inthe evenings.Pieter Wagner of the Farmers Union said

that more emergency notice boards can beerected to prevent damage when dealingwith fires.“I have come across many veld fires and

there are no information boards that areavailable with numbers to inform localauthorities. Information boards can preventdisasters,” he said.As far as Bela Bela crime incidents are

to ensure that proper CCTV systems be putin place in order for criminals be identifiedmore easily.“We often report to business related

Women’s Month wrapped up

Lizzy Bapela

Women’s month serves to recall andrecognize the work of stalwarts of the1950s who led militant women’sorganizations for the rights of workersand the rights of women. The WaterbergDistrict Municipality states that that isthe only reason why Women’s Day iscommemorated.Known for their leadership roles in

many women’s organizations within theirareas and across the district and theprovince, former Waterberg DistrictMunicipal speaker and now executivemayor, Tlotlanang Mogotlane andModimolle mayor Kgaretja Lekalakalawere amongst the women leadershonoured during continuous Women’sMonth celebrations across the district. The two indicated that people should

also honour all the contributions to thestruggles for justice and human rights bymultitudes of women across SouthAfrica. The mayors said that peopleshould spare a thought for the continuedviolations of basic rights of women bythe state, society, armed and unarmedgroups, corporations, traditionalstructures, individual men and all thosewho hold power in unequal andmasculine societies. As one of the men who acknowledge

women leaders in the district,Mogalakwena Mayor Councillor MaloseMabuela urged the current generation tolet the bravery and selflessness of the1956 Women Generation should remindthem that there is no power greater thanhuman determination to be free.He said that in South Africa women

have, for decades, played a critical rolein the struggle for liberation and alsocontributed immensely in the process ofbuilding a united, democratic, non-racial,non-sexist and prosperous South Africa. The mayor further said that South Africahas made visible progress in empowering

women, judging by the number of womenholding public office and women whohave entered fields that had beenearmarked for men only in the past.“The country has women as pilots,

truck, bus and train drivers; and those insenior positions in the military and thepolice. We have women constructionworkers building roads and dams in thegovernment’s Expanded Public WorksProgrammes and Community WorkProgrammes. Some women at work stillexperience discrimination based ongender such as pay inequalities, sexualharassment and pregnancy. Ourgovernment continues to supportwomen’s participation in the economyas entrepreneurs and decision makersand also opens up export opportunitiesfor women owned businesses. We also have to provide an improved

quality of life for women in informalsettlements, rural villages andtownships as government. For as longas some of them still have to carrybuckets of water over long distancesand cook with firewood outside theirhomes because there is no electricity, our work is not yet completed,” saidMabuela. He indicated that the empowerment of

women begins with the empowerment ofgirl children, regarded as investing inthe future.

Mogalakwena Police begillegal protesters to disperse

Lizzy Bapela

The Mogalakwena Local Municipalityexpressed disappointment over the conductand behaviour of community members whoallegedly conducted an illegal march to themunicipal premises on the morning ofMonday, 1 September.Municipal spokesperson Malesela

Selokela told The BEAT that the march wasillegal simply because this group ofcommunity members did not inform themunicipality about their intention to protestand the notice must reach the municipalityat least seven days before the plannedgathering.Selokela also said that some of these

illegal protesters tried to disrupt the IDPRoad Show in Moshate Village. He furthersaid that the protestors also wanted themunicipal council to reverse their resolutiontaken on 26 August to request that theLimpopo MEC for COGHSTA MerriamMakhurupetje to terminate the membership26 councillors who have failed to attendthree or more council meetings.Selokela mentioned that the said

councillors were afforded an opportunity topresent their side of the story but they

opted to inform the Speaker that they donot recognize the council based on theirreasons.During their demonstrations the protestors

removed the municipal pavement and alsoinsulted and threatening members of thecommunity not to enter the municipalpremises to access services. They alsobroke the pavement bricks on the tar road, also threatening to burn tires until themunicipal security brought the situation toorder. The Acting Manager for Traffic and

Emergency Services Log Buitendag had onnumerous occasions phoned the localpolice station to inform them about thesituation. He allegedly spoke to twoLieutenant-Colonels Mogwaneng andMantjane and surprisingly, neither of themresponded to his pleas to attend to thesituation. It was not until Buitendag gothold of Lieutenant Motsweneng that thepolice responded in half an hour’s time afterbeing called to the scene. However, instead of arresting the illegal

protesters who caused malicious damageof property and intimidation the men andwomen in blue begged the illegal protestersto disperse in 30 minutes,” Selokela said.

A few years ago, Disney Pixar, the creators of such belovedchildren’s films as Cars andMonsters Inc., made a film abouta robot. The film was called Wall-E, and it was about a trashcompacting robot that had beenabandoned on Earth, and hadbeen quietly trying to clean up theplanet for a hundred years.Everyone should watch this film.

At first glance, it’s aheartwarming family story aboutfinding love, and about standingon your own two feet. But give it alittle thought (and you will findyourself thinking about this sillylittle film at the most randomtimes) and you will find that theunderlying message is veryimportant too.The main theme of the film is

that in the end, we have to cleanup our own messes. The humans of the story had

abandoned the planet sevenhundred years before, after filing itwith so much trash that life wasno longer sustainable. Left behindwere legions of robots which weresupposed to clean the planet upwhile the human race had a nicelittle holiday. The film is notentirely clear what happened tothe other robots, but by the startof the film only Wall-E is left, building a city out of blocks ofcompacted trash, and thehumans on their deep space linercan’t even walk anymore.By the end of the film, humans

had returned to the planet, learned to walk and vowed to takecare of the planet — there’s aparticularly heartwarming scenewhere the captain of the shiplooks at a plant they had foundand said ‘you just need someoneto take care of you, don’t you?’and then looks at the model ofEarth in his office.Truer words were never spoken. The earth needs someone to

take care of it, and dear readers,we’re what it’s got. We are thecustodians of this little blue-greenorb, and it is our responsibility totake care of it, to ensure that it isin a habitable condition for thenext generation, and the next, and the next. For the moment, atleast, and in fact for theforeseeable future, our survival asa species depends on keepingthe planet we live on in acondition to support human life. And the way to do that is not the

way we have been going so far. It’s not throwing our trashwherever we please. It’s notpumping pollution into theatmosphere. It’s not cutting downtrees wantonly, or pouring our filthinto the rivers and oceans. We are currently aiding and

abetting in the murder of ourplanet and, by extension, in thegenocide of our entire species.Because this is the only planetwe have, and if it dies, so do we.

Theprogram began on Monday, 25 August, inhouseholds with domestic workers acrossthe province, and ended on Friday 29August.Departmental spokesperson Johannes

Africa includes people working in privatehouseholds in any capacity,” said Mokou.Recent figures released by the

Department have shown that there are over600 000 domestic workers currentlyregistered for UIF. Mokou said that thisfigure represents a drop in the ocean asthe number of actual workers is thought tobe much higher. He added that through the inspection the

Department hoped to uncover unregisteredemployees to avoid unnecessary stresswhen they are unemployed.“The current minimum wage for a

domestic worker is R9.63 hourly, whichadds up to R433.35 per week for a 45-hourweek and R1877.70 per month, in Area Awhich is mainly urban. In Area B, which is mainly rural wages
