Many of us have heard the quote“the quality of mercy is notstrained,” but perhaps not so manyof us know the source of this quote.Once again, we can thankShakespeare for a sentiment thathas informed the world. The fullquote, which is a speech by Portiain the play The Merchant of Veniceruns as follows:The quality of mercy is not

strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from

heavenUpon the place beneath. It is

twice blessed:It blesseth him that gives and him

that takes.’Tis mightiest in the mightiest. It

becomesThe thronèd monarch better than

his crown. It’s a lovely sentiment although, in

the play, it did not work. Intranslation into modern English, according to the website No FearShakespeare, it runs: No-oneshows mercy because he has to. Itjust happens, the way gentle raindrops on the ground. Mercy is adouble blessing; it blesses the onewho gives it and the one whoreceives it. It is strongest in thestrongest people, and looks betteron a king than a crown. And the thing about mercy is that,

much like forgiveness, love andother positive emotions, it cannot beearned, only given.Mercy uplifts us, makes us better

than we were before. It changesboth the giver and receiver intobetter, wiser people — or it shoulddo. And the thing that many forget is

that mercy is not for the weak. Onlythe strong are in a position tobestow it.In our modern world with its

sentiments of tit-for-tat and an eyefor an eye it is easy to forget thateveryone needs mercy sometimes.Everyone needs forgiveness. Thequote an eye for an eye, by theway, is from the Bible althoughmany prefer the Gandhi version: Aneye for an eye, and all the world isblind. The sentiment of the Gandhiquote is radically different from theBible’s, which promotes the kind oftit-for-tat we were just speaking of.Gandhi understood that nobody is

perfect, and we are all in the wrongsometimes. We need to practiceforgiveness in our lives or riskhemming ourselves in with so manyold hatreds that we can’t move.

11 November was Armistice Day, theanniversary of the end of the FirstWorld War. Across Europe, themonth of November is marked by thewearing of poppies in honour ofthose killed during the darkest fouryears in human history. Which was, within thirty years, followed by aneven more shameful period in history, the Second World War. South Africawas not really involved in the firstWorld War, but the whole world is stillfeeling the effects of the second.By the end of the war, over 60

million people — 2,5% of the world’spopulation at that time — had beenkilled. The Third Reich had collapsed, the Italian and Japanese Empireshad fallen, and Europe was in ruins. An estimated eleven million of thedead were Jews, who wereslaughtered like cattle in Germanconcentration camps such asDachau and Auswitch. It was a dark time for Europe and

the world, and the scars are stillthere. There are still people alivetoday who survived the death camps. It is important that we never forget

the risks of inaction. Most of Europedeclined to enter the war until theywere attacked themselves. The onlyexception was Great Britain – butthey waited until after France hadfallen, and until it was clear that theywere next on Hitler’s lists. The UnitedStates did not enter the war until afterthe sneak attack on Pearl Harbour, despite the urgent pleas of everyEuropean nation who could see thearmies of the Reich bearing downupon them. When they did, they did so with a

vengeance, flattening the Japaneseempire and eventually dropping twonuclear bombs on Japan atHiroshima and Nagasaki. August 9and August 6, the days on which thebombs were dropped on Japan, killing two hundred thousand civiliansin the space of a few days, is not anational day of remembrance inAmerica, although it should be. It ispossibly the darkest day in humanhistory, and certainly the darkest inAmerican history, and resulted in thefall of an empire that had stood forthousands of years. The nation perhaps most scarred by

the War is Germany. Every Germancitizen remembers what happenedwhen they sat back and let historytake its course, resulting in a nationfull of the most fanatical proponents ofdemocracy and freedom in the world. In a stroke of wonderful irony,

American citizens are immigrating toGermany in order to escape theincreasingly militarized surveillancestate that the United States is in theprocess of becoming. The freedomof the individual is sacred inGermany, and the power of the statestrictly circumscribed.“Never again” is the motto of the

German nation. And they do not shy away from

their history. They do not lie aboutit, or try to paint over their failures— not that Europe would haveallowed them to forget if they hadtried. They accept it, and they learnfrom it, and in the end, they are astronger nation for it.We have something to learn from

Germany.
