Five more suspectsarrested in connectionwith game farm murderAn additional five suspects were arrestedlate in the evening of Monday, 16November, in connection with the murder ofgame farmer Piet Venter on 14 November. The first suspect was arrested the followingday, and the others the day after.

The suspects’ ages range between 26 and34 years old and they were arrested in Bela-Bela and Pretoria.

The six men were expected to appearbefore the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Courtduring the week on charges of murder andpossession of suspected stolen property.

The 29-year old man, who was arrested onthe day after the murder, joined the other

TK Mashabafive in standing trial for the crime.

According to information received from police53-year old Venter was asleep at his farm housewhen intruders broke into his home andmurdered him before removing the house safeand fleeing the scene.

“Rooiberg Police were informed and theyimmediately visited the scene,” said LimpopoPolice’s spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba.“Preliminary investigations appeared to showthat the deceased was strangled, but a fullpost-mortem will reveal the cause of death. Asearch of the suspects was immediatelylaunched, and the 29-year old suspect wasapprehended at Bela-Bela.”

The stolen safe, along with its contents offirearm ammunition and an undisclosed amountof cash, were recovered outside Bela-Bela.

The police at Bela-Bela warned residents thatscammers have come up with a new trick whichthey use to part honest citizens from theirmoney.

These scammers apparently send SMSmessages to people saying that a case hasbeen opened against them at the SAPS. A nameand number is supplied for a ‘constable’ whocan provide more information.

When the victim phones this number, the‘constable’ tells them that they have committeda traffic violation, and must immediately pay afine or they will be in big trouble.

Police warn of new scamThe ‘constable’ also asks them for all sorts of

personal information such as name, telephonenumber and ID Number.

An experienced police officer said that thepolice would never send out an SMS like that. While the police do send out SMS notificationsto a person who opens a case against someoneelse, they do not send them to the personagainst whom the case has been opened. Insuch SMSes the case number, a name, and therelevant police station will always be given.

The police, he said, do not even handle trafficviolations.

Residents are warned not to provide anypersonal information over the telephone, andnot to respond to these SMSes at all.

Social Welfare office and the WaterbergDepartment of Social Development held aMen’s Dialogue for fathers of the disabledChildren.Meanwhile, the Bela-Bela Council of

people with Disabilities is also expected tohost a three-day workshop this week, withthe major objectives being outlined onFriday, 13 November. The event will takeplace at the Bela-Bela Community Hall, aimed at creating awareness onopportunities that the disabled can grab tobetter their lives. The workshop issponsored by a Johannesburg basedcompany called Auto Bock, whichoriginates from Germany. The company hasbeen operating in South Africa for abouttwo years now.The council’s chairman Piet Mabusela said

that these workshops will also be used asplatforms to campaign to get public facilitiessuch as hospitals, taxis etc. to be user

Lizzy Bapela friendly for people with disabilities. The council is still concerned about their

weak partnership with the Bela-Bela LocalMunicipality, which appears to be fading bitby bit. Mabusela said that as the leaders inthe council, they always go out themselvesto get information from concernedstakeholders down to the people to accessit. He added that while other departmentsare landing a helping hand where they can, their municipality, which should be themother-body in stakeholders, is foldingarms and not assisting.

Plans to drill additional boreholes in Bela-Bela have recently come underway.According to Councillor Kobus van derMerwe, suitable areas have already beenidentified near the show grounds, the golfcourses, and the Outpost Estate.Drilling has already started in the past two

week in an open field in Roodepoort Street, where a good amount of water was found.Van der Merwe said that the drilling is part

of an attempt by the municipality to fulfilthe town’s reserve water capacity.“The town’s water is currently supplied

from Magalies Water and the boreholes willhelp the town to obtain more water as wellas helping to fulfil our reserve capacity.Aurecon, an engineering firm, has been

consulted for the project, and threecontractors were appointed.Boreholes have also been drilled near the

town’s fire station where an abundance ofwater has been found. Van der Merwe saidthat the water that was found will bepurified and tested.

South Africa is facing its the driest season everand weather experts predict that there will beno significant rainfall until autumn next year.

Chris Sonnekus of the TowoombaAgricultural Research Centre outside of Bela-Bela compared rainfall over the last ten yearsand found that June, July, August andSeptember were severely dry rainfall months.

Sonnekus said the average long term rainfallfor these months ranged from 0 mm in August,33 mm in September and 50 mm in October.

Below-average rainfall was measured in 2014for January, February, March and April.

Sonnekus said that the Waterberg area had avery dry winter and grazing is very poor.

He further explained that although 65 mm ofrainfall was measured in the beginning ofSeptember, the main problem with thepersistent drought was the lack of follow-uprain.

“The Waterberg district received no rain inOctober and it now causes problems with theplanting of maize and sorghum and thus thepreparation of crops. No grain planting could

take place yet and the planting season for cornand grain sorghum is almost at an end,” hesaid.

“What is very noticeable is that thetemperatures for September, October andNovember are now very high early in.Everything that is planted simply burns todeath.”

The maximum temperatures for the monthreached new records, according to him.

Sonnekus said there are no prospects for anysignificant rainfall for the next two weeks, which will result in no maize and grain sorghumbeing planted this season.

“A lot of grain farmers will only able to plantsunflowers in January and February providedthat there is enough rainfall during thesemonths. However the availability of grazing foranimals reflects a negative picture. Many of thepastures have burned downed and there isalmost no grazing available, “said Sonnekus.

Meanwhile Premier Stan Mathabatha’sadministration in Limpopo has set aside R3million to assist farmers affected by thecrippling drought through its Department ofAgriculture and Rural Development.

“A thorough assessment of the droughtsituation has found that all district and localmunicipalities in Limpopo are facing the worstdrought conditions in years. The declarationwill assist the government to unlock resourcesto assist the affected communities,” Theprovincial government spokesperson, PhutiSeloba told press.
