n There are plenty of folks still left in town who actually called the cavern underneath the east grandstand of True Lay Stadium home for 4 months a year during football season back in high school Those grandstands came down last week as part of phase 1 of the Stadium renovation project It was kind of bittersweet but also kind of exciting Pat Adkins spoke at Kiwanis last Wednesday and told the group that the projected completion day is August 1 In fact that date is more of a ldquohard daterdquo for completion as each of the three contractors on the project will have to meet that deadline or kick in $20000 each

n As many of you know Dr Robert Putnam the former PCHS valedictorian from the class of rsquo59 just released his new book called ldquoOur Kidsrdquo Dr Putnam now a Harvard Professor and Dean used his old home town as kind of a test tube for his study of the human condition and what he describes as ldquothe loss of the American Dreamrdquo They had an 8 frac12 minute segment on his study on PBS News Hour last Thursday It was pretty much a sad assessment of human conditions in the 43452 However it ran a day after last Fridayrsquos OCIC Business and Industrial Awards program This much I can sayhellipthere are JOBS available in Ottawa CountyhellipGOOD JOBS Keith Smith at Materion told me they have to hire 50 people and they are in kind of a hurry So Dr Putnam things are definitely looking up here in your old stomping grounds

nam Port Clinton High School alumni and Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard released his newest novel Our Kids which paints a bleak picture of Port Clin-ton as well as the rest of the nation

Putnam who called Port Clinton his hometown in the 1950s starts his book off by saying ldquolife (now) in Port Clinton Ohio is a split-screen American nightmare a community in which kids from the wrong side of the tracks that bisect the town can barely imagine the future that awaits the kids from the right side of the tracksrdquo This is not necessarily the Port Clinton that most of us call home

RESEARCHOur Kids focuses on outlining statistics such as in

the 1950s only 4 of births existed outside of mar-riage which Putnam accredits to the strong ldquopatriarchal division of labor coupled with widely shared prosperity that allowed most families to get by on one male income and the strong norm against out of wedlock births so that premarital pregnancy was typically fol-lowed by a shotgun marriagerdquo

The collapse of the family structure in the 1970s is also highlighted in the book Putnam says that sex and marriage delinked with the advent of the birth control pill and the feminist revolution transformed general and marital norms

In 2000 the ratio of ldquodivorced to mar-ried people was nearly twice as great among high school educated Ameri-cans as among college graduates and by 2008-2010 the gap had grown furtherrdquo

Putnamrsquos research also found that ldquocompared to college graduates high school educated men are four times more likely to father children with whom they do not live and only half as likely to visit those childrenrdquo In 1960 only 6 of children lived with a single parent and now that number has reached over 50

ldquoSkills acquired early in childhood are foundational and make later learning more efficientrdquo Putnam points out in Our Kids ldquoAs the child ages the brain becomes less able to changerdquo The frame-work of a child is formed and devel-oped by the childrsquos family and then that framework is skewed the child has less chance of adapting according to Put-nam

Our Kids goes on to tell stories of Port Clinton children then and now and their trials and tribulations of life some have it easy some have it hard

Putnam highlights the gap that is grow-ing nationally between high and low in-come families Stanford Sociologist Sean Reardon says ldquothe achievement gap be-tween children from high and low income families is roughly 30-40 percent larger among children born in 2001 than among those born 25 years earlierrdquo Many sta-tistics that are outlined in the book demonstrate a scis-sors gap graph to where problems seen in the past are only being amplified in the present day

OUR KIDSPutnam suggests that in the days of yesteryear all

the children in the community were seen as everyonersquos kids families taking interest in other familiesrsquo well-be-ing parents helping other children etc Putnam believes that this isnrsquot true now in Port Clinton or on a national level ldquoEveryone in my parentsrsquo generation (from pool shark to pastor) thought of Don and Libby (classmates of Putnam) as ldquoour kidsrdquo but surprisingly few adults in Port Clinton today are even aware of Davidrsquos (troubled child living in Port Clinton) existence and even fewer would think of him as one of ldquoour kidsrdquordquo

When Putnam goes into the specific individual stud-ies this is where the research seems generalized and somewhat exaggerated leaving Port Clinton a sinking ship representing the American dream

If the citizens of Port Clinton and eastern Ottawa County are a reflection of the national standard of a lack of community and care for our children then how can Devin Kohlman be explained He was child who

lived in a small apartment in downtown Port Clinton and became everyonersquos child People throughout the area cared for Devin helped Devin supported Devin and shed tears when Devin left The entire community rallied to support Devin and his family

COMMUNITY THOUGHTSldquoWhat we are seeing with job listings is that there are

good jobs available the difficulty is finding people in-terested in the jobs we haverdquo said Ottawa County Im-provement Corporation director Jamie Beier Grant commenting on Putnamrsquos comments in Our Kids ldquoThe challenge in Ottawa County not unlike any other place in the United States is the need to better communicate the jobs that are available and the skill sets those jobs entailrdquo

Beier Grant and other organizations businesses and schools came together to create the Business Advisory Council in Ottawa County to help better steer children in a direction of success utilizing every asset that the county can offer

Another excerpt from Our Kids talks about the lack of community support especially for ldquopoorer kidsrdquo ldquoThey grew up in an era (referring to people of Putnamrsquos gen-eration) when public education and community sup-port for kids from all backgrounds managed to boost a significant number of people up the ladder- in Bend Beverly Hills New York Port Clinton and even South Central LA Those supportive institutions public and private no longer serve poorer kids so wellrdquo

ldquoI think Putnam is exaggerating only to draw attention to the need to serve all kidsrdquo said United Way of Ot-tawa County director Chris Galvin ldquoWe wouldnrsquot have created the mentoring program if there wasnrsquot a need or we wouldnrsquot have created the career pipeline for the Business Advisory Council if we didnrsquot see a need for the children to see all the options for their future These things didnrsquot previously exist in our communityrdquo

ldquoI encourage everyone to read the whole bookrdquo said Galvin ldquoand see what strikes a chord with you If there is one message I want to convey in all of this itrsquos that you can do anything you want to do you can be anything you want to be and you can do it right hererdquo

The United Way and The Beacon will be hosting a book discussion of Putnamrsquos Our Kids in May on a date yet to be determined Citizens of Port Clinton are en-couraged to read the book and bring their thoughts into the discussion

Gardner Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2480 turned 83 years old A wonderful and sad time in their history 83 years of dedicated service to those who have served our country and to the Port Clin-ton Community

83 years ago a group of Veterans decided to start this Post to help their comrades in need Over the last 75 years many genera-tions have volunteered their time talents and strengths to make this Post an impor-tant part of the community In the last 15 years I have seen many of those strong men and women leave this world Itrsquos a sad dying tradition I am afraid to say for we are not gaining enough new members to take over what they began

Unfortunately the current generation this Post depends on are still working a 40 plus hour job have families and ob-ligations to tend to and do not have the time to invest in our cause The economic health of this country does not help mat-ters either I have personally talked to a few of the current Veterans of Foreign Wars of this generation and that is ex-actly what they told me on why they do not join the VFW American Legion and AMVETS Too many of our VFW Posts in the State of Ohio alone have shut down our own American Legion no longer has a post home and this VFW is hanging on by the grace of the few that still tirelessly vol-unteer their time talents and strengths for them we are eternally grateful We cannot say thank you enough to them

If this Post does not survive who is go-ing to take care of our veterans Who will host the fundraisers for needs of our com-munity members Who will honor the veterans on final time on this earth Who will point the veterans or their families in the right direction for help and most im-portantly who will stand up for our vet-erans at the government level if there are no veterans organizations like the VFW to protect the rights they so deserve In my eyes this decline is just a reflection of what our Nation has become

It is the most wonderful feeling to see everyone come together when we have a specific person in need and the help and volunteers come out of the wood work but if there is no immediate physical crisis there is only the few that go out of their way to support this Post My heart is torn on this day I feel overjoyed knowing I have been a part of helping many veterans and their families and many community members over the last 15 years with this Post No I am not a veteran myself my grandfather and uncles were and I have come to love many of the veterans and members here as if they were my blood family I truly believe in what this place is supposed to be about but am saddened by what I see and hear on a daily basis

So I ask of you on this day remember all those that have come before us and all those that are still sacrificing their lives to give us the freedoms we have Bless those of you who still believe in the American way and support our veterans past pres-ent and future

On ward we will struggle to keep these doors open for those veterans and their families

CitizenshipThe definition of what constitutes a

good and decent society is partially con-tingent upon a citizenrsquos personal world views Each of our world views is typi-cally constructed through childhood ex-periences life lessons and the nurtured environment It is very difficult to place world views into clearly-defined boxes Onersquos world view can become liberal in nature or fairly conservative with respect to various subjects

For example one can be fiscally con-servative and yet socially liberal and vice versa The monikers we place upon one another such as Democrat or Republican are incomplete and may not be represen-tative of the true essence of an individu-alrsquos soul It is important to consider as well that individual world views are not eas-ily altered through words that contradict deeply-held ideas of the world relation-ships government and what constitutes the good and decent society

In our American pluralist (two party) society we are fortunate to have oppos-ing world views that help keep the nation somewhere in the middle of far left or far right world views A nation that wanders too far one direction can facilitate the rise of an out-of-control government that hin-ders personal freedoms Likewise a na-tion that drifts too far the other direction could result in a society where anything goes and the rule of law breaks down into anarchy During our Somali cam-paign to save the starving people in refu-gee camps in 1992-93 anarchy reigned as war lords controlled specific regions and used emergency food supplies as brokered weapons of power Those who have trav-elled or served overseas sometimes have a better understanding of how governmen-tal entities can run amok hindering the free expression of normative citizenship In a continued effort to cultivate local and national political consensus each citizen must therefore evaluate himselfherself and other people in terms of their soul rather than via a name or political world view

Citizenship also demands that each of us takes seriously the responsibility to participate in the amicable debating of important issues We are brothers and sisters of a family of communities that must prosper through cooperation and accomplishment or whither from apathy and name-calling

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District Women in Conservation series starts Wednesday April 15 The series will be held at various locations in Ottawa County from 530-8 pm on the third Wednes-day of every month from April to September

The first workshop will be held at Camp Perry at the new state of the art indoor air rifle range During the session there will be a presentation on the history of Camp Perry and the Civilian Marksmanship Program There will then be a hands on instruction and use of the rifle range The cost of this session is $20 There is space for up to 80 women

On Saturday April 4 at 11 am families and children are invited to the Ottawa County Courthouse lawn for an Easter egg hunt The event is for toddlers to children up to ten years old There will be candy

and prizes for all and no registration is re-quired

The event is sponsored by the Port Clin-ton Recreation Department and the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce

The Ottawa County Board of Develop-mental Disabilities hosted a basketball tournament benefitting the Board of DD and the United Way of Ottawa County The tournament which was held Mon-day March 23 starting at 6 pm at Oak Harbor High School showcased members of the Ottawa County Special Olympics team Port Clinton and Oak Harbor High School basketball players United Way board members and servicemen from the 200th Red Horse

There was a small ceremony held at the beginning of the tournament to honor the Port Clinton boys who had fearlessly rescued a woman from her home during a fire They were honored with plaques gifts and gratitude from all those in at-tendance The boys honored were Darius Daniels Matt Paeth Adrian Hall Brendan Zeitzheim and Skyler Cook

In addition to the basketball tourna-ment there was a 5050 raffle a silent auction and concessions which benefitted the Board of DD and the United Way

The Ohio Department of Natural Re-sources (ODNR) is reminding people that fish kills may be common in ponds and small lakes this spring Winter die-offs of fish that result from long periods of heavy ice and snow cover on small waters are referred to as winterkills Winterkills may occur in some Ohio waters this year as ice and snow of the past few months gives way to spring

Winterkills are caused when persistent ice forms a surface barrier between water and air that prevents circulation of oxy-gen and blocks sunlight If these condi-tions continue long enough the oxygen fish need to survive may be depleted and result in some or all of them suffocating Lacking sunlight plants stop making oxy-gen and eventually start to use it as they die back and decompose

Winterkill is most common in shallow ponds and will become obvious if dead fish are seen along the shore Ohiorsquos north-ern counties are most susceptible to win-

terkill because of colder temperatures and more frequent snows However similar to last year winterkill of ponds is possible in any part of the state due to persistent cold weather and snow cover

Some fish die-offs are expected in Ohiorsquos larger lakes as well this year but for dif-ferent reasons Fish which are less toler-ant of long cold winters such as gizzard shad are commonly seen along the shore-lines of reservoirs and even Lake Erie dur-ing moderate winters However in larger waters the species that commonly die off following winter are resilient and re-turn in great numbers following a single spawning season

On Sunday April 12 the Terra State Stu-dent Nurse Association is holding a SNA 5k fun runwalk Registration begins at 8 am runner race begins at 10 am and walkers begin at 11 am The event will be held on the campus of Terra State Com-munity College in Fremont

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Student Nurses Association Each

race participant will receive a t-shirt and goodie bag (while supplies last) There will also be a whacky wear contest with prizes given by age groups so participants are encouraged to dress their whackiest

The Salvation Armyrsquos Camp NEOSA this year is June 24-29 The camp program is provided to the first 47 children ages 6-12 who register Transportation is provided

Camp NEOSA is one of the many pro-grams offered by the Port Clinton Service Center This program is made possible by funding through local contributions from residents and businesses Due to the gen-erous funding we are able to offer a week-long camp experience to forty seven ap-plicants this year

At Camp NEOSA the camper will expe-rience many activities that are geared to-wards assisting the development of their physical social and spiritual needs To meet these needs the camp is aimed at helping learn and develop good health habits in cleanliness proper rest balanced diet and exercise Camp NEOSA also provides an opportunity for each camper to contribute to and receive from a group

living experience help with making their own decisions participate in activities that stimulate creativity and experience an atmosphere that fosters independence

Camp NEOSA is located on a 200-acre peninsula on 1000-acre Leeville Lake in Carrolton Ohio The nature surroundings contribute to the spiritual educational social and recreational needs of every camper and camp days are filled with hik-ing swimming canoeing arts amp crafts sports and drama activities

In the 1870s there were several railroads in Northern Ohio One railroad ran between Cleveland and Toledo with stops at Cleveland Lorain Danbury Port Clinton and Toledo However there was no train to the tip of Marblehead which would help not only people travel-ing to the peninsula but would provide a way to ship the limestone out of the quarry So in 1887 construction of the railroad tracks was started in Danbury The finished Lakeside amp Marblehead Railroad (LampM) cost $260000 was 7 miles long employed 14 people and operated from 6 am to 9 pm It ran two round trips between Danbury and Marblehead one in the morning and one in the af-ternoon from Monday through Saturday Sunday was considered ldquoGodrsquos Dayrdquo so there was no train or boat ser-vice on Sunday Along the 7 miles there were 3 stations one at Danbury a second at Lakeside and the third at Marblehead The Danbury station was the transfer sta-tion Passengers could transfer to the LampM and complete

their trip to the peninsula or passengers could transfer to the big trains going to Cleveland or Toledo The Lakeside station was built in 1887 and the Marblehead station was located on the present day ground of the Kellyrsquos Island Ferry parking lot

In addition to passengers the railroad hauled freight fruit and lumber The lumber was used to build houses especially in Lakeside The LampM locomotive 1 pur-chased in 1888 had a connector at the front of the car a front clearer for removing debris and animals on the tracks a light smokestack bell and the coal-car called the ldquotenderrdquo for hauling the locomotiversquos coal and water

In 1891 the LampM Railroad was sold to Kellyrsquos Island Lime amp Transport (KILT) owners of the quarry who had a need to transport their limestone In 1891 the trains hauled 62400 tons of limestone and tonnage would eventually grow to 2292700 by 1912 The original engine house was built for two locomotives but as more loco-motives were purchased a new engine house was built in 1903 housing 5 large engines and several smaller Shay ldquodinkiesrdquo

Passenger service was less profitable than freight Car-rying passengers required not only hauling the locomo-tive and coal-car but the additional passenger coach and a baggage car To reduce expenses a gas motor car was purchased in 1910 and carried 35 passengers The ldquoRed

Devilrdquo McKeen motor car 5 could carry 55 people in lux-ury with seats of polished mahogany and velvet By 1920 however passenger train travel declined rapidly primar-ily due to more people travelling by car Better roads were being built and cars were cheaper to own Also travel by car allowed people to go where they wanted rather than where the railroad tracks took them Passenger service was at its peak of 15500 in 1895 declining to a low of 2900 by 1929 and eventually resulted in the LampM discon-tinuing passenger service in 1930

However there was still freight to move Operating coal cars was not only expensive but was a time-consuming operation to load water coal and clean out the locomo-tive firebox To increase productivity the railroad con-verted from coal to diesel in 1949 with their first diesel locomotive 70 ldquotonnerrdquo 10 Yet the railroad continued to lose money In 1961 KILT sold the railroad to Chemstone who sold it to Standard Slag in 1962 and Slag sold it to La-farge By 1964 all operations were closed the tracks were removed in 1997 the Marblehead station was torn down in 2002 and finally the engine house was demolished in 2003 The end of an era

Of the 3 stations the Lakeside station is the only build-ing still standing Renovation of the station was com-pleted in 2004 and it is used today for meetings and social functions

The US Department of Labor has awarded a $6122500 Ready to Work Partnership grant to WSOS Community Action Commission (WSOS) to train 600 long-term un-employed and veterans seeking work in middle and high-skilled occupations across 17 counties in Ohio The grant will help individuals reach their goals of education training and a stable job

This grant is part of a $170 million federal initiative to ex-pedite the employment of Americans who are struggling with long-term unemployment The Ready to Work grant is a partnership between employers industry association part-ners higher education training providers adult career tech-nical centers workforce investment boards American Job Centers and the WSOS Community Action Commission

WSOS will utilize its grant to fund the JobsOhio Region 2 H-1B Ready to Work program The program will provide par-ticipants in Williams Fulton Lucas Ottawa Sandusky Sen-eca Crawford Wyandot Hardin Hancock Wood Henry Putnam Allen Van Wert Paulding and Defiance counties with career awareness and coaching supportive services assessments andor testing certifications in the advanced manufacturing information technology healthcare and environmental fields as well as apprenticeship programs internships on-the-job training and job placement

The program will be carried out through partnerships with Area 7 and 8 Workforce Investment Boards the Lucas County Economic and Workforce Development Agency Penta Adult Career Center Terra State Community College

After 22 years in the program Paul Anderson completed his last theatrical production at Port Clinton High School Saturday night Many drama club alumni came back to Port Clinton High School to watch Andersonrsquos last pro-duction Grease

ldquoItrsquos great to see so many former students in the audi-encerdquo said Anderson as he spoke on stage after the per-formance He spoke on how thankful he was to live his dream and how much he loves the students and the City of Port Clinton

Former and current students were encouraged to sign a

scrapbook that was made for Anderson to take with him to remember his great career Anderson plans to retire in May

Band and choir continue legacy of excellence

On Friday and Saturday March 13 and 14 the B-C-S School District hosted the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 2 High School Large Group Adju-dicated Event At this event both the Oak Harbor High School Concert Band and the Oak Harbor High School Mixed Choir earned a Superior (1) rating This is the highest possible rating The Mixed Choir was only one of two ensembles in class A to earn such a distinction Both the Oak Harbor High School band and choir have a long standing history of Superior (1) rat-ings at District and State level adjudicated events The ratings qualify the groups to compete at the OMEA State High School Large Group Contests in April The band is directed by Mr Travis Magoto and the choir is conducted by Mr Russ Exlos-Ra-ber and accompanied by Mrs Mary Wood

The OMEA District 2 event held on March 13 and 14 brought in over 3500 stu-

dents performing in 63 bands and choirs from this region of Ohio to Oak Harbor High School and Middle School Each group performed for four professional ad-judicators selected by OMEA evaluated and critiqued their performances and as-signed a rating based on that performance This event was a significant fundraising opportunity for the B-C-S Music Boosters who operated concession stands at both locations

The Board of Education and entire school community wishes to congratulate both the band and choir for continuing their tradition of musical excellence and wish them the best as they compete at the state level The Board and Administration also wish to thank Mr Magoto Mr Exlos-Raber the B-C-S Music Boosters and all of the staff for their dedicated efforts to-ward making the District II Large Group Event such a great success in Oak Harbor

The Ohio School Boards Association recently honored Port Clinton Middle School Principal Ms Carrie Sanchez at their Northwest Region Meeting in San-dusky Ms Sanchez was presented with the Northwest Region Excellence Award for Outstanding Leadership on March 12 2015 Through her leadership students thrive in an environment designed specif-ically for the middle school aged students Even the school day schedule allows for staff collaboration everyday to discuss the education plan and individual student concerns The entire staff embraces the middle school philosophy Develop the WHOLE student into a young adult ca-pable of owning responsibilities personal decisions and personal actions create an atmosphere that promotes learning and celebrates achievement in all areas and inspire students to explore and be inquisi-tive about the world around them

Due to their continued success Port Clinton Middle School has repeatedly

received the Ohio Department of Educa-tion EXCELLENT rating and in 2014 were named a ldquoHigh Progress School of Honorrdquo by the Ohio Department of Education This designation has been earned by less than 1 of the schools in the state of Ohio and recognizes schools for their student data in the areas of reading and math as recorded on the state report card

In addition to her duties at Port Clinton Middle School Principal Ms Sanchez also chairs the school districtrsquos Naviga-tor program The Navigator Program is designed to promote innovative and cre-ative instructional practices During the 2012-13 school year she also faced the dif-ficult task of leading students and faculty through the serious illness and loss of a student with grace and compassion

Through her charismatic and caring leadership Ms Sanchez has the sup-port of her team of educators Together they are making a difference in student achievement

Vanguard BPA travel to state competition

March 12-13 twelve students from the Medical Information Technology program at Vanguard Tech Center traveled to Co-lumbus to participate in Business Profes-sionals of America (BPA) State Compe-tition These students had to win at the regional level just to attend the confer-ence While there they competed against

the best in the state in their chosen area of study

Eight of the students placed in the top ten in the state and four of them qualified for National Competition They will be at-tending the National BPA Conference in Anaheim CA on May 5-10

After a fantastic high-school football career Port Clin-ton senior Keegan Lowe has decided to continue playing at the collegiate ranks

Earlier this month the linebacker signed a letter of intent to play football for the Tiffin University Drag-ons

Itrsquos been an incredible ride for Lowe who was instru-mental in helping the Red-skins go from 0-10 to 7-4

and the programrsquos first appearance in the playoffs last season The middle linebacker who called the plays for the defense was second on the team with 101 tackles 15 sacks one forced fumble one fumble recovery and six pass breakups

He helped Port Clinton win some big games last fall as the lsquoSkins defeated Genoa (27-19) Conneaut (58-29) and Perkins (33-30) The victory over the Comets which saw Port Clinton rally from a 19-7 deficit before taking the lead on a 65-yard pass from Brandon Moore to Nathan Stubblefield midway thru the fourth quarter was a pro-gram-changer one that proved the Redskins had truly ar-rived In the playoffs Port Clinton lost in the first round 49-14 to Kenton which didnrsquot advance them to the state

semifinals but the defeat could do nothing to put a damper on the best season in the programrsquos history

Lowe who was also re-cruited by Otterbein Capi-tal Defiance Wooster Muskingum Mount St Joseph and Mount Union talked about why he will at-tend Tiffin which is located approximately 35 miles south of Port Clinton

ldquoI chose TU because it is close to home (and that way) my family and friends can attend the gamesrdquo said Lowe who narrowed it down to Tiffin and Mount Union before making his final decision ldquoI plan on majoring in education and their education program gets students in a classroom in their first year I am look-ing forward to pursuing my educational goals and con-tinuing my football career at the collegiate levelrdquo

Lowe who will compete for the track team this spring can leave Port Clin-ton knowing that he and his fellow seniors helped to leave a legacy that will stand the test of time

Karis DeWalt is one of the most decorated athletes to ever wear an Oak Harbor uniform

Frankly itrsquos hard to determine whether DeWalt has ac-complished more as a soccer player or a track runner The Rocket senior helped lead the soccer team to the Final Four two years ago won the Sandusky Bay Con-ferencersquos Player of the Year Award last season as a de-fender no less and helped the Rockets win three league titles bringing the mark to six in a row for the program And she earned all-league honors twice and was an all-district selection this year In track she helped the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams win four SBC titles and place at the Division II state meet last year Last spring the 4x400 quartet which consisted of

ldquoMost of us have been playing together since fifth grade and we have always wanted to be the senior class that took Port Clinton to the playoffs and leave a legacyrdquo he said ldquoWe wanted to lay the founda-tion for a good football program and teach the underclassmen that if they commit to hard work and believe in themselves they can be successful All the seniors were committed to changing PC footballrdquo

The winning also got the community ex-cited about football again something that

helped bring it closer togetherldquoIt was absolutely amazing to see all of

the support and to see Port Clinton come together and have the football teamrsquos backrdquo he said ldquoI am so happy we were able to give our community a successful season and to change the way PC football is viewedrdquo

Lowe credited second-year head coach Beau Carmon and his staff for turning things around by changing the culture and demanding toughness from the players

ldquoThey focused on getting us to buy into the programrdquo Lowe said ldquoThey put

together a strong offseason program worked on our mental toughness as well as our physical strength and speed Coach Carmon and his staff brought a level of belief and intensity to the Port Clinton football program that held us account-able to each other and our community He turned players into brothersrdquo

Lowersquos brother Emerson was also a big part of the team serving as a force in the backfield running 117 times for 694 yards and 13 touchdowns He also had 13 catch-es for 198 yards and two scores and also played defense making 51 tackles and

intercepting two passes The two of them have been supported by their parents Bill and Stephanie who were instrumental in their two sons becoming such fine ath-letes

ldquoSince my brother and I have had a love for football since we were little my par-ents signed us up for the pee-wee football program and supported us every time we wanted to attend a camp or combinerdquo Lowe said ldquoWe have had so many amazing people who have supported us throughout our football careers We are very blessed and grateful for them allrdquo

DeWalt who probably couldrsquove run track in college has decided to continue her soccer career at the Univ of Findlay hav-ing signed the letter of intent before the Margaretta-Oak Harbor basketball game last month

ldquoI was not expecting anything that bigrdquo DeWalt said of the event which included her impressive accomplishments being announced before the crowd while she sat at a table with her parents Sam and Mari-lyn ldquoI was just happy that Mr Grahl was going to give me some recognition It was

amazing I missed (my freshman) year at Oak Harbor and just listening to the list of accomplishments it was an eye-openerrdquo

DeWaltrsquos most impressive accomplish-ment was probably her being named the leaguersquos Player of the Year in soccer last fall something she did as a defender Usually those awards are reserved for midfielders and forwards that have op-portunities to build up their statistics with goals and assists but DeWaltrsquos brilliance as a defender earned her the praise of the leaguersquos coaches

ldquoThere are 11 girls on each team so itrsquos definitely hard as a defender to be recog-nized and differentiate yourself from the teamrdquo she said ldquoIt wasnrsquot my goal to stand out I just worked to anticipate the game and help my team For the coaches to rec-

ognize my work was a prize in itself It was nice it was the icing on the cakerdquo

Renee Goldstein now in her 12th season as head coach of the Rockets spoke about DeWalt and her talents

ldquoWhen she walked into practice the first time you knew she was going to be a big part of Oak Harbor soccerrdquo Goldstein said ldquoShe stood out with outstanding foot skills and the ability to handle the ball under pressure That was the year Nikki Weis was out with her first ACL tear and we were trying to find someone to step into that spot (and) Karis did exactly thatrdquo

Goldstein also credited DeWalt with be-ing an integral part of the team that ad-vanced to the Div III state semifinals in soccer in 2013

ldquoShe was extremely instrumental in that

yearrdquo Goldstein said ldquoWe had young de-fensive players and she was a good role model for them She played hard in every game throughout the tournament even hurt she kept pushing throughrdquo

That run saw the Rockets who rode the talents of leading scorers Emma Bar-ney and Paige Velliquette dominate their competition for the first four games of the tournament outscoring their opponents 15-1 before defeating Liberty-Benton 2-1 in the regional finals The run ended un-fortunately when Gates Mills Hawken defeated Oak Harbor 4-1 in the state semifinals

DeWalt is an excellent student as well having earned a 389 GPA during her time in Oak Harbor
